Two members of a six-man armed robbery gang were killed Mon day in Ebonyi during a shootout with the police along the Afikpo-Okigwe highway.
The armed robbery syndicate had blocked the expessway with a vento volkswagen car at the Akaeze/Edda bridge in a bid to rob road users.
But a team of policemen led by the Divisional Police Officcer in charge of Ivo local government area moved to the scene where the Officer Commanding (O/C) Akaeze Police station was already engaging the robbers in a gun battle.
“The gang ran off with their car and the police gave them a hot chase which forced them to abandon the car and snatch a Toyota Bus to make good their escape,” police spokesman, George Okafor,said in a statement.
According to him: “In the ensuing exchange of gun fire, two of the robbers were gunned down, the rest four escaped through aninri/Awgu axis ofEnugu State with bullet injuries while one AK47 riffle five magazines amd twenty rounds of live ammunition were recovered from them.”
While noting that a combined team of Special Anti-Robbery Squad and Anti-Kidnapping squad of the command were on the trail of the fleeing robbers, the spokesman urged members of the public to report any person seen with bullet injuries to the police immediately.
