The kidnap on Sunday of Nigeria’s former minister of foreign affairs, Bagudu Hirse, in Kaduna was that of mistaken identity, a witness has said.

The ex-minister, who was in Kaduna on a condolence visit over the death of former Sultan Ibrahim Dasuki, was kidnapped at the gate of Mamman Daura, a nephew of President Muhammadu Buhari, along Inuwa Wada road in Kaduna.

A victim of the attack, who was travelling with the minister, Samuel Pukat, said the abductors actually came for Mr. Daura.

Mr. Pukat, a relation of Mr. Hirse, and some witnesses told PREMIUM TIMES that the incident occurred around 9:35 a.m. on Sunday.

Mr. Pukat, in a telephone interview with our reporter, said the kidnappers stormed the residence of Mr. Daura in two Toyota Corolla cars and “dispersed” all the security details at the house.

He said the kidnappers were eight in number, four in each of the two vehicles with sophisticated guns.

“We were right by Baba Mamman Daura’s gate on a visit to condole him over the death of former Sultan Ibrahim Dasuki.

“The ash Corolla car of the kidnappers rushed and blocked our car as the gate to the house was opened for us to enter.

“We had already written our condolence note to be handed to Baba (Daura) whom we were told was getting ready to go out for an appointment; before one of his aides identified us and asked that we be allowed in to see Baba(Daura) as soon as he finishes taking his bath.

“Then all of a sudden, the kidnappers in an ash colour corolla car rushed and overtook our car, four masked gunmen jumped out of the car and made for the compound.

“One of them from the second Corolla car behind us shouted at the other group to come back. He pointed at Baba (Hirse) who was ordered to come down from the car.

“They mistook Baba (Mr Hirse) for Baba Mamman Daura because he is putting on the same traditional white native dress Baba(Daura) usually wears,” Mr. Pukat said.

Continuing, Mr. Pukat said the kidnappers started shooting sporadically into the air.

“They kicked me with their hard boots and I fell inside culvert as they abducted Baba (Mr. Hirse) and his driver.

“What surprised all of us was that the security details at Baba(Daura) residence fled the scene scampering for safety with all other people around when the kidnappers pulled over and started shooting sporadically in the air,” he said.

Sources, including Mr. Pukat, said Mr. Daura was in the House with the Chief of Staff to President Buhari, Abba Kyari, and a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Baba Gana Kingibe.

They said the three men were “visibly disappointed with the action of the security details”.

“In fact , it is even the ordinary civilian gate man that came and closed the gate after the incident,” Mr. Pukat said.

He also disclosed that the abductors were yet to contact the family for any possible ransom demand.

Another witness said the kidnappers asked Mr. Hirse to get into their car. He initially resisted and was trying to seek further explanations from them, the witness said.

“At that time, people started approaching the scene, so one of the kidnappers raised the gun he was holding and made to shoot but it did not fire, he tried it the second time and it failed, but the third time, a shot rang and people ran for their lives. The whole thing was like a movie scene,” the witness said.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Cyril Abeh, and the State Director of the State Security Service arrived the scene after the abduction and were sighted inside Mr. Daura’s residence.

Our reporter also observed heavy security around Malali, Ungwan Rimi, and around major roads within the metropolis.

Meanwhile, a report by the News Agency of Nigeria, Monday, said the abductors had made contact with Mr. Hirse’s family.

Mr. Pukat confirmed the report.

“They first reached me; it was Hirse’s voice that was on the line before the abductors took over,” he said.

Mr. Pukat, however, refused to give details of the discussions with the abductors.

This is obviously the handwork of Sambo Dasuki and I can bet anything that the kidnapping was carried out by military people loyal to him.

  • Sanssouci

Hmmm Mamman Daura and Abba Kyari side by side….Well this lays to rest any doubts as to the existence of the cabal

  • Opekete

The day is coming when these kidnappers will enter Aso Rock and cart away the president and his vice. I will not be surprised if all the security details makes covenant with their legs.

  • otunga

Desperate situations demand desperate measures. The president should declare a national state of emergency on kidnapping, set up special courts to try only kidnappers, set maximum trial time limit for every case at 14 working days, penalty; death by hanging carried out 24hrs after conviction; sponsorship, collaborating, aiding and abetting, death by hanging, all properties and assets confiscated, cash returned to victims. Then see how things turn out, maybe this incidence will jolt PMB from his slumber, Singapore has the lowest drug rate in the world because of strict laws. To travel from city to city in Nigeria is a testimony because you could be kidnapped, robbed, killed by stray bullets, slaughtered for rituals, hacked to death by “herdsmen”…it is crazy

    • Adamu Ndagi

I am 100% in support, Sir.

    • princegab

What punishment do you ascribed to leaders who ran the country amok ?

    • Hamza

No one can secure Nigeria the way it is. Only hope and pray that after a crime, the criminal is arrested.
The way we live our lives. Population so much. So many unemployed jobless and even greedy heartless and evil people who likely are under the influence of substances. Extreme greedy desire for everyone to be rich. Lack of self contentment, etc. People born children they can’t cater for, end up producing menace to the society. The leaders have contributed no doubt, but the followers too who gave birth to all sorts of criminals from armed robbers, prostitutes, kidnappers, cultists, terrorists, corrupt officials, etc. Why would someone give birth to children they can not train and look after?
Of course when people are even hungry and complain of food, personel poorly motivated, we can’t be talking of sophisticated security gadgets to help secure the environment. We can’t be talking of surveillance cameras. Enough police to chase criminals, etc.
Nigerians problems are simply self inflicted. Shame!

  • B. Messi

I hope they didn’t give up church on Sunday morning.. looking for favours under the guise of condolence.

    • Tunji Olarewaju

Me too i wonder o;wetin concern Maman Daura with Dasuki?

      • Ismail Ibrahim Bakori

Mamman Daura is married to the daughter of late Sultan Dasuki.

      • HAMZA

………….then seek to know OR you are not qualified to comment on this…..

  • musa aliero

Loool the security men ran away!!!chai there is god oo the security these days are only good for intimidating poor defenseless ordinary people! They always run when they see a man with gun! So who is actually safe in Nigeria? Only big men that carry a battalion of convoys moving? Pathetic

    • Otile

What are you talking about? Would you take the bullet for this man? Mamman Daura paid him off to cover for him in public, how do you think ordinary maiguards will die for him?

      • Hamza

They don’t have to take a bullet. Some heroic and smart security guy hiding somewhere from a vantage position could have even taken out one of the kidnappers. Who are clearly outlined and very visible in the open. Our security guys are just very poor and unprofessional. Like someone said “only good at harassing armless poor innocent people. I’m sure the kidnappers being professional themselves won’t just shoot randomly. Hey come on u are at home. Your home. Familiar environment. Nigerians are just cowards and no heroes. Everyone afraid like a chicken. Shame!

  • TAWANDA INCOMMUNICADO

    The important question is :

Was this a purely criminally motivated kidnapping or were there other motives ? Daura is the closest man to Buhari hence it would have been a direct blow to the presidency.

    • persona

If politicians are involved, its politically motivated. Consider the pool in that house: a former minister, a former VP candidate, a service chief of staff and the nephew of the president.
I don’t buy the mistaken identity crap because the kidnappers would have done a stake-out to ascertain not only their target(s) but to have a proper head count. Why will you kidnap a man who signed a condolence register, will the owner of the house sign a register in his own house?
The other question is this, why will a combine team of security officials of the chief of staff and that of Daura be “dispersed” that easily?
The Kaduna Mafia are at it again of which those 3 inside are members.

    • princegab

My brother, our pmb should change these corrupt men around him. To before harm…….

  • Ifeanyianadu

Staged self kidnapping … who are they fooling. These two men who have more security than the president. Shame on them.

  • Lanre

This is a hoax and a joke. Immediately I read Babagana Kingibe, I immediately knew this must be a set-up. I refuse to be fooled by the rulers of Nigeria. No. Not any more.

  • Dazmillion

Sources, including Mr. Pukat, said Mr. Daura was in the House with the Chief of Staff to President Buhari, Abba Kyari, and a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Baba Gana Kingibe.

They said the three men were “visibly disappointed with the action of the security details”.

I dont blame the security men for running away. The security men know that Abba Kyari, Baba Gana Kingibe and Mr. Daura are worse criminals than the kidnappers. Why would they want to die for the people mortgaging away the future of this country

  • Right Minded

This staged self kidnapping by the Daura DSS is to frame and arrest some people who are critical opponents to Buhari and Mamman daura. Its not possible for any kidnap attempt to have happened at Mamman Daura residence whom most Nigerians believe is more powerful than Buhari himself. What do these dumb fulani take other Nigerians for? Anyway, we are watching as the scenario unfolds. We will start hearing of arrest of key opposition figures now after some “alleged” members of the kidnap gang have been “arrested” and “confessed” to the crime.

  • ukoette ibekwe

Just as Buhari staged attempted assassination some years ago to win sympathy and money from the security vote, which he now claims was looted.
Besides, how can someone be more powerful in Nigeria than the President.
So the president has someone that thinks for him. He has become a robot for his nephew to control?
If the President is clearly controlled by someone else, why does Nigeria still need him as the President.

    • Julius

wow, really ? You must have been in the meeting when all that plan was hatched. Nonsense !
