Two toddlers, 16 others survive auto crash in Abeokuta

The accident happened on Friday evening.

Two babies and sixteen adults narrowly escaped death in an auto crash on Friday evening in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

An 18-seater bus travelling from Lagos and conveying the passengers somersaulted and plunged into a ditch in Aro area of Abeokuta.

A witness said the bus was speeding before the accident, which occurred near the famous Neuropsychiatric hospital in Abeokuta. It swerved-off the road and somersaulted three times before it finally entered a ditch, the witness said.

Though nobody was reported dead as at press time, the passengers, including the two babies, were seriously injured and had to be rushed to State General Hospital, Ijaiye, for medical attention.

At the scene of the accident, the bus was seen in the ditch, damaged with blood stained, while personal belongings of the passengers, including telephone handsets, were also scattered at the scene.

An officer of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Ewekoro Division, Sodiq Owolabi, who led the rescue team of the Corps, told PREMIUM TIMES that the victims of the accident, including two babies, were seriously injured and taken to General hospital at Ijaiye in Abeokuta by some officers of the Nigeria Police Force and Federal Road Safety Corps.

Mr. Owolabi confirmed that Biodun Biobaku, the bus driver, was over-speeding and lost control of the vehicle at a point along the road.

Mr. Owolabi, an Assistant Superintendent of Corp, urged drivers to drive safely and implored the passengers to always endeavour to fill the passengers’ manifest in order for the their families to locate them in case of an accident.
