Africa’s richest person, Aliko Dangote, on Friday pledged support for the Kano State Government in health, education and other sectors.

Mr. Dangote made the pledge while launching the polio immunisation in Kano where he personally vaccinated his granddaughter. The industrialist is from Kano.

He said it was “indeed very embarrassing” that Nigeria was still one of the three countries with persistence of polio virus.

“It is a point of concern to us because the other two countries still having the virus are war zones; that is Pakistan and Afghanistan,” Mr. Dangote said.

He said that the position of the country drew his attention and made it necessary for him to support polio eradication in Kano and Nigeria in general.

He urged people to support the efforts of the state government by ensuring that their wards and children were immunised during the December round.

On November 26, the Dangote Foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the state government signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate and eradicate polio by 2015.
