Osinbajo disagrees with Lai Mohammed on Jollof rice

Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo
Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Monday described Nigerian-cooked jollof rice as “the best in the world”.

This came days after the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, sparked outrage by claiming Senegal prepared better jollof rice than Nigeria.

Mr. Mohammed was responding to a question by CNN’s Richard Quest.

Mr. Osinbajo weighed in while speaking on Channel TV’s “The Platform Nigeria,” convened by Poju Oyemade, senior pastor of the Covenant Christian Centre, in Lagos.

“And by the way, we all know that Nigerian jollof rice is the best, we beat the Ghanaians and the Senegalese hands down,” the vice president said.

“We have everything, and our people are doing incredibly innovative things.

“Our music and entertainment industry is the fastest growing in the world, and of course, nobody is as funny as Nigerians, whether professional or amateur,” he noted.

The VP also extolled Nigerians’ innovative feats in various fields, especially in recent times.

“Last year Oluyinka Olutoye, a Nigerian surgeon successfully took out a baby from her mother’s womb, operated on the womb, and put the baby back in.

“The baby was carried full term and was born naturally — a feat previously unheard of.

“Only last year, a Nigerian girl Morolake Akinosun won a gold medal at the Olympics.

“Last Saturday, a Nigerian boxer Anthony Oluwafemi Joshua won the WBA, becoming the boxing champion of the world.”

    Lai, a bad image maker.
Pray, when is the cabinet reshuffle coming?

    • Femi O. Odunlami

      @Onye Obosi:disqus

      Thank you, Richard Quest

Richard Quest tried to rescue Lai Muhammed but failed all the same. Lai Muhammed can’t be saved
from himself. He’s language-challenged. He has no understanding of English language. Anyone who’s
passed Wasc/Gce of his own efforts should understand basic lexis and structure. Whenever the word
BEST appears in a sentence a comparative is implied, not a specificity, and therefore, it’s inexcusable
spin by Richard Quest that Lai Muhammed mis-understood a simple question, to wit: “Who makes the
      best jollof rice
?” That straightforward question cannot be misunderstood to the illiterate extent of
Lai Muhammed also misunderstanding the meaning of the word, ‘BEST’. It is a sign of laxity in Nigeria
that a Minister of Information is allowed to stay on the job after such a fiasco on CNN live broadcast.

    • Mizch

Who will do it? The President is in the other room oooh!

      • woman leader1

        You haven’t said anything.

      • dele20

        Unwelcoming post by you

    @Onye Obosi:disqus

ALHAJI LAI MUHAMMED SHOULD BE REPEALED AND REPLACED IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST.

AN IMPULSIVE AND MENTALLY BEREFT MINISTER OF INFORMATION IS NOT WORTH HAVING.

Our minister for information and Culture Lai Muhammad is competent and irreplaceable

      • OMOLOYIN

It is those fools that won’t understand

  • Edwin Cosmas

    @obosi_warrior:disqus

Guys, haba. Illiterate no dey una family too? Please cut Lai Muhammed some slack now.

  • Segun Adeoye

OK! Osinbajo go school and him get sense, but Lai is a real mumu! When you’re so much carried away with lying unconsciously, you won’t really know when you’ll spewing rubbish from such lie infested mouth! Lai is a disgrace to that sensitive office of information and culture he’s austentjw holding! Buhari in his incompetent state just paraded mumus like himself in his cabinet!may God help us in this country!

    • Yego V

The man-Lai has been called a Liar and he is making effort to deserve it

  • CeeCee1818

Could it be that whoever cooks for Lai isn’t that good?

  • Saydo Shan

The question Lai Muhammed was asked is tricky. It is a notorious fact that Jollof Rice is a Senegalese food. It derives its name from the ethnic group that prepares it best. Lai Muhammed is not a local man. He is very widely travelled and speaks excellent French. If Lai Muhammed had answered that Nigeria prepares the best Jollof Rice, he will have been certified as a liar. The question did not elicit for a subjective answer on something that is just all too obvious to anyone that has either travelled widely in West Africa or had been chanced to eat the other Jollof Rice varieties even here in Nigeria.

  • marko

Liar Muhammad wives should learn how to cook ooooooooo away is good for him a born lier

    • woman leader1

      Grow up.

    • Please make some sense.

      Irrelevant comment

  • Dr Pat Kolawole Awosan

@disqus_j2N45UPdoA:disqus : By calling Alhaj Layi Mohammed,s a liar you are spiritually cursed by the holy ghost, in Jesus-Christ,s name because, your parents failed to give you proper good upbringing hence, you resorts to calling a respected Nigeria minister of information,Alhaj Layi Mohammed, a liar.
Quite very unfortunate that Nigeria vice president Yemi Osinbajo and the minister of infromation,Alhaj Layi Mohammed, were arguing bitterly about which is the best jollof-rice, food not any of our traditional national stable food-stuffs but jollof-rice.No Nigerian is ever proud of anything that originates from our land except imported stable food like jollof-rice.

    • tsunami1earthquake

Why do you curse people in God’s Name? I wonder the kind of Christianity people practise in Nigeria! A section of Nigeria’s Christians need to be reeducated on Christianity and Christian ethics.

    • Yego V

You may curse if you so wish, but to do so in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ is the most unfortunate thing you can do under the disguise of Christianity. To start with, I don’t see anything wrong with someone expressing his/her opinion about Lai’s claim. Indeed millions have done same. That Marko naughtily expressed his opinion about Lai does not warrant a CURSE using the name of God. You do not, by your utterance; represent the image of God here on earth. I hope anyone reading your comment will not be misled about our faith. If anything you are a disgrace both to humanity and the Christian faith. Please learn to disagree with anyone in a more civilized and democratic manner. And if you must curse, please do so in your name.

    • SamPsalm

Jollof rice is not imported staple. There are home grown rice – and until recently, all that those of in the village knew was jollof rice: rice mixed with whatever was available at any point in time. It has always been a delicacy – and instead of discussing PDP, recession, EFCC, all the time, I would not mind some talk on jollof rice now and then. When you become Vice President, you can bring up talk of any food that you like. Lai Mohammed prefers to talk jollof rice

  • zygote

This is what we now ended up with, a jollof rice government.

    • AFRICANER

If Osinbajo is publicly disagreeing with Liar Mohammed, it means Buhari is dead.

That’s just a guess. But, remember, I’ve always guessed right.

      • SamPsalm

Grow up. You are so dead-set that you play dead and think death over something the whole world finds wholesomely funny – except those in the cemetery. Resurrect! and then go try some Nigerian mama-put rice – thew spicy one

        • AFRICANER

It’s difficult to laugh with a dictator, and an administration that killed so many Shiites and many Igbos.

Nothing at all funny can come from these people.

lolz, no you don’t always guess right. Stop making trouble.

      • Night Crawler

      • woman leader1

      You are a moron

    • progressive

      You are a clown.

  • SamPsalm

Speaking matter of lai-ly, sorry, factly, both are correct. The wollof people makes the best jollof rice semantically speaking. If indeed the word jollof takes its root from wollof, then they are, if you like – ground zero of jollof rice. The standard against which others are set: the standard that must be satisfied first before creativity quotient can then be assigned for any other extra zing. So, in that sense, Senegal gets the call and Lai Mohammed is remedied as a fact apostle. And of course, Nigeria then gets the prize for the zingiest rice – who go beyond the basal standard of wollof, sorry, jollof rice to escalate the eating pleasure – assaulting the delicacy with the militancy of its endless ethnic groups and peoples and condiments. From pomo jollof, to crafish jollof; from the cruelly-set spicy to the deliberately crude and over-oiled versions. From the ones poisoned with the health of endless herbs without NAFDAC numbers to the ones set to the pin-point measures of illiterate Chefs whose only blackboard is their tongue and nose. Senegal may make the best jollof rice in the Museum park of historians but Nigeria’s version is a contemporary beast, causing endless havoc to hunger and occasions wherever it goes. If not for jollof rice, how we for ever survive recession?

    • progressive

It shows how some some senseless few people will come on here and be deceiving themselves, what the minister said shouldn’t be a national issue on the media, the minister that said something like knew what he was saying so nobody should contracdit his statement

  • To The Media: This story should not be trending. There are other important things to broadcast. What should be talked about now is, how the country will move forward and not this piffle!

    • front man

      Exactly

  • LagosBoy

This propaganda by the opposition wont work..They are trying to make something out of nothing and this wont get the attention they so dearly seek from the Nigerian People..
They have done more than enough in their so called 2 decades rule..
They are just trying to break us apart and this wont work..They should take up the tools and head to the farm cos right now, That is what i see they can only be good at..
God bless Nigeria and God bless us all.

    • front man

      The haters are everywhere now

  • Otile

Liar Mohammed is promoting his ancestral homeland Senegal while Osibande is promoting his own homeland Oduduwa Republic. Lair is bragging to us how good their only Senegalese export product is, and Pastor Osibande is showing off his talented tribesmen. With the expected passing of Imam Mohamed the battle line is drawn; Arewa and Odua people are going to be embroiled in a tug of war with each trying to outdo the other. We in the SS SE will rather like to see them do the battle with their own resources and leave our oil for us so that we shall develop our land as they used the oil to develop Lagos and Abuja. Today they despise us because they feel we are powerless over our own God given resources. But God is great.

    • front man

“Last year Oluyinka Olutoye, a Nigerian surgeon successfully took out a baby from her mother’s womb, operated on the womb, and put the baby back in.” Of course, this didnt happen in Nigeria, but in Texas, and the government is not doing anything to revert the situation.

    • Otile

Tactics comrade, Pastor Osibande is giving it back to Lair Mohammed emphasizing that his own Odua people beat Lair’s Senegalese people. Man, man pass man. That’s the point Osibande is making.

  • front man

There are better things to discuss right now than jollof rice beside if information minister said senegaless jollof rice is better everyone has right to his/her opinion, anyone doubting information minister can go to senegal to confirm
    Simple

  • progressive

I think what the minister said shouldnt be what some idiotic fellows should be arguing about right now , everybody is entitled to his or her own opinion.

  • Wise Head

The worst form of idiocy. Saner countries are debating how to put their places in the global map of great accomplishments, these ones are here debating the taste of jollof rice. Who did this to us?
