Former military dictator, Ibrahim Babangida, on Saturday re-echoed his support for a two-party system, and declared that it was the best option toward deepening democracy.

Mr. Babangida spoke in Minna, when the Strategy and Inter-Party Affairs Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presented to him, its report on how to move the party forward.

“Gradually, my earlier suggestion about the practice of a two-party system is gradually coming to the fore in the country.

“In 1999, when I was advocating for a two-party system, some of my colleagues had their doubts, but I told them that it provides a choice, which is the first essence of democracy,’’ he said.

He expressed optimism that PDP could still rule for 60 years “provided it can put its house in order”.

The former head of state said the PDP was the only political party, whose presence had been felt, known and accepted by the people.

“PDP’s presence is felt not only in Abuja or Lagos, but down to the lowest level.

“If you go to the grassroots, the ordinary man will talk about PDP; that is the asset the party has and should use to spring back to reckoning.

“Already, it is accepted and known. All you have to do is work harder and try to convince the people back to your fold,” he said.

Earlier, Jerry Gana, chairman of the committee, had urged the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to allow opposition political parties to always voice their opinion on issues.

Mr. Gana also advised the APC to allow rival parties to develop so as to offer Nigerians other options at all times.

“The presence of opposition is key to democratic growth; we must allow Nigerians to listen to the other side,” he said.

He described Mr. Babangida as “a visionary leader, who read the future and advocated a two-party system long ago”.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that Mr. Gana was accompanied by Aminu Wali, Raymond Dokpesi, Tom Ikimi, Emeka Ihedioha, Rufai Alkali and former Niger governor, Babangida Aliyu.

Of course, their presence has been felt in the distribution of poverty and the continuation of the corruption enshrined by IBB.

    • Abu Nima’at

True talk.PDP is dead and buried. May their bone never rise again.

  • TDaniels2

Guess what? IBB plus Jerry Ghana equals what? MAMSER, EGUNJE, SETTLEMENT & ASSASINATION. True to the adage, birds of the same feather flock together!

  • Haba mallam

Party of thieves and looters, no wonder Babagida is one of them, Buhari is to Nigerians what PDP is to looters, Buhari is the one felt, known and accepted by the Nigerian masses, he alone crushed PDP

    • Otile

Terrorist, APC kuma PDP suka duka daya. Don’t bother to respond with your usual mantra – creek money, your slogan has become a cliche.

Wrong Sir. What we need is multiparty system.

With only 2 parties, the elites will find it easy to force the masses to chose between 2 evils that both represent ONLY the interest of the elites.

We need multiparty system so small voices can also be heard. We also need independent candidature.

I dont know why the smiling General thinks we deserve fewer and not more choices!?

  • Deansmart

PDP to govern nigeria for the next sixty years? God forbid cos by then there would be no more country call nigeria again cos they would have looted every kobo and nothing left for the people

    • Omoregie Samuel

Check all the cabals of this administration, they are all PDP members hanging by the Sea shore of APC deceiving Nigerians about recovery looted money from the previous administration.
Think about the latest saga happening now in the same Saints that came to crusifer the past.
Nigerians should look well before catashooting, find a place to see Nigeria since 1960, then, you will marvel.
In the next administration you will find IBB, TY Danjuma, Olusaraki, Obasanjo etc coming out to context as Senate president, President, Governor etc.
Where is the change in governance, a tortoise give birth to tortoise.
The elites are copy writers, until we find self formulation of policies, tribal, religious and cabals reasoning will still dominate a better idea of human race.

  • James Bond

IBB should go home and sleep

    • S. O’Shiji

He doesnt deserve any sleep, He should be exiled from this country, his properties and loot seized and re-injected back into the development of society which it was originally meant for.

  • Fada4Life

IBB this a joke taken too far

  • Udom

Is Babangida a PDP member? Regardless, those who stood in the way of democracy ought not say a word about it. A balanced and fair history, written by unbiased scholars will remember Babangida, not as an elected office holder, but as a dictator who ushered in rampant corruption and and a cancer that continues to eat away the fabric of our society.

The sorry state of hospitals and medical services in Nigeria is as a result of dictators of Nigeria like him not spending the oil wealth wisely. Every time he scurries to Germany for health reasons should be a sad reminder to all Nigerians (and the PDP members) that Babangida and his ilk failed every baby, the pre- and post-natal mother, and thousands of Nigerians who died from inadequate medical facilities in Nigeria.

For those PDP members to trudge to Minna looking for relevance from a former dictator is an insult to the memories of all those dead patients and all Nigerians who fought and died for democracy. They ought to hang their heads in shame. You can’t approach a carnivore seeking advice on vegetarianism. You might just end up being the main course. A word to the wise.

Yeah right! In the way Nigeria felt you…..stupid bastard

    • Esskay Osha

      @disqus_zw9upAuAHX:disqus

      To me,
Buhari is not president of anything. He is a curse on Nigeria. Buhari is now a holiday
job president. He said he came home yesterday and will be going away again,
maybe for another 50 days, to take blood transfusion and more injections. Is
that one a president again? Why did he even come back, to do what in three
weeks – what he could not do in one and a half years plus? Buhari just came to
sign vouchers for his Hausa/ Fulani contractors and sign payment advice. Very
corrupt man. What else made him to come back, if not money, since he has no
single idea in his head since resuming office?

      Buhari government has
dis-appointed the whole country. Just see! NEPA didn’t bring
light for more than 8 hours throughout last month in my house. They now brought
5,000 Naira bill. Where will I get 5,000 to pay for darkness when no
electricity was supplied? How can Buhari say he is president of a country where
we are billed for darkness? What kind of country is that one? Today now the
Campaign for Democracy is saying in front page of Vanguard that Raji Fashola
must be removed in 30 days. But Buhari will just put his long neck up like giraffe
so that he won’t see public opinion in Vanguard newspaper.

        @disqus_zw9upAuAHX:disqus

LET TRUTH BE TOLD – IT IS RAJI FASHOLA WHO DISGRACED THE BUHARI GOVERNMENT.
HE BROUGHT DOWN THE GOVERNMENT WITH INCOMPETENCE AS ELECTRICITY MINISTER.
FOR ONCE RAJI FASHOLA FAILED COMPETENCY TEST, BUHARI BEGAN TO LOOK VERY BAD.

        • Toni O.

@disqus_zw9upAuAHX:disqus : The APC party has dis-appointed millions of Nigerians with brazen lies. APC promised
heaven and earth but delivered nothing in power – just blaming the past, blaming others, accusing rivals with selective probes and nothing else sensible since May 29, 2015, whilst APC thoroughly destroyed in the meantime for lack of ideas on what to do. On all metrics, Nigeria is now far worse than the APC met it. Anyone betting on PDP started thinking from that point, because was not as
bad as this under the PDP government. APc has almost totally destroyed what was left of Nigeria.

APC party is worse and useless. In one of its phantom promises said it would pay a stipend of N5,
000 each to 25 million poor Nigerians monthly. This gives a total of N125bn each month and N1.5tr every year. The APC also promised to provide free education, daily free meals for millions of Nigerian school children, free tertiary education, free health care and free houses to Nigerians. The APC does
not know too well that this is daft policy, as APC lives in frauds and lies exemplified by Lai Muhammed.

      • vay

Yeah right! Let buhari be worst than worst he is still one tetrallion better n best than that useless God forsaken IBB. If you check my posts u ll see I do criticise where buhari is lacking but not for someone like IBB to still be counting himself as a living thing

  • Say the truth

Right way to go. Give us alternative.

  • FirecloudOFGOD

Why people continue to seek advice from people like IBB; who was an abject failure in his time, beats me. I do not wish that we have a one party state in Nigeria. If that is the way it has to be, may God forbid a disastrous party such as PDP arise from its ashes as mythological Phoenix did; for it was not and will never be a good thing!

    • Objective Points

      @FirecloudOFGOD:disqus

THANK GOD THAT GENERAL BABANGIDA HAS WOKEN UP FROM HIS SLUMBER.

WHEN APC WAS FORMED BABANGIDA REFERRED TO PDP AS HIS FORMER PARTY.

AFTER 21 MONTHS OF ABJECT POLICY FAILURE BABANGIDA RUNS AWAY FROM APC.

THE ONLY HOUSEFLY THAT WILL FOLLOW APC CORPSE TO THE GRAVE IS OBASANJO.

APC UNDER BUHARI IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE BUT DOWN FOR LACK OF POLICY AND PLANS.

  • Opekete

Objectivity is not a subject for the parochial mind neither is open mind an empty garbage can. Patience is a virtue and one cannot have too much of it. Looking back at how long and hard you have gone will determine how far you will go in a journey. The head is never crooked if the legs are straight. IBB? No credibility because he is one of the crooked legs that makes the nations head to wobble.

  • Lanre

It is only in a moribund, dysfunctional, failing state like Nigeria would you have someone of the personality of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida proffering solutions. Babangida should be in jail. But then when a majority of the elite are arse-lickers busy chasing for contracts in Abuja, the society is left to be guided by bandits.

Eiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii Buhari will ran again hearing his nemeses IBB talking.

    Bed-wetting president

  • Julius

This is what happens when you can do anything and get away with it. IBB is still talking, the man that should have been executed long time ago. I wonder who is still listening to him . Nonsense.

    • Sir Louis

Well said. He has little to offer after what people like him did to the country. The people in the PDP delegation who went to see him are familiar characters who have a lot to answer for the looting and degradation of Nigeria and the poverty of Nigerians.

      • Julius

The sad thing is they are still doing it, looting and degrading the country.. You are correct. God help us !

  • Elias James

From this story, it’s hard to know which Nigeria Mr. IBB is talking
about. I somehow think that he’s being misquoted, because he seems to be
too politically astute to be talking like some old and deluded goon
whose medication is messing him up upstairs. Let’s wait and see if, as
in most news reports in Nigeria, he will deny that he said all this. And
Dokpesi and Aliyu among the disgusting and shameless bunch visiting the mafia king? Fire still dey
    mountain for Naija o.

  • persona

Is IBB thinking that APC and PDP are different?
Is he now tired of his conspiracy of silence when he couldn’t present himself as a candidate even while he wore the uniform of PDP knowing people will never vote for him?
I suppose that IBB has a problem of choice between 2 parties and yet, he is proposing the same experiment of SDP and NRC which he singlehandedly crushed?
Old age is a very demanding stress on any mind talkless of one laced with corruption.

  • Sir Louis

PDP is an evil party and it is dead for good. IBB is tired and should devote valuable time to resting himself. He will be wasting his time if he dreams of the resurgence of a party of wicked thieves. Even if the wicked looters in the PDP bring up the party again, Nigerians who have seen the meaning of hell under the current recession, will roundly reject the military party.
