The Federal Government on Tuesday ordered all contractors who abandoned projects in the Niger Delta region to return to site immediately.

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo gave the order at a stakeholders meeting for sustainable development in the Niger Delta region held in Owerri, Imo State.

Mr. Osinbajo said he was disturbed by the long list of projects owned by NNPC and the Niger Delta Development Commission in different parts of the state and said that such practice must stop.

He also said that those contractors who collected money and diverted them would be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted.

“I have today directed that all contractors whose projects have been abandoned must return to site forthwith.

“They must return and I want to say that all these contracts will be investigated thoroughly.

“We will investigate every one of the contracts and any one of them found to have diverted funds we will ensure that they are prosecuted and that they are brought to justice.

“It is not acceptable for anyone to take projects that are meant to offer succour to the people.

“Especially to the people in oil production communities and to abandon them and them come back and complain that work isn’t being done,” he said.

According to the Acting President, the Federal Government will make sure that all of those projects are completed.

“I must say that it is shocking that over the years, several NNDC projects and the Ministry of Niger Delta have been abandoned by contractors.

“A long list of abandoned projects have been presented to me; one has almost 40 abandoned projects; projects where contracts have been awarded and in some cases money paid,” he noted.

Accordingly, he said that those involved in the shady deals must be made to account.

He promised the people of Ohaji/Egbema and Oguta, the main oil bearing communities in the state, that he would ensure that they got their due share of the oil wealth.

He promised to work with the Niger Delta Power Holding Company to ensure that the abandoned Power plant in Egbema which could produce 300 megawatts of power was completed soon.

Mr. Osinbajo also promised to present the request of the state for the conversion of the skills acquisition centre in the area to a Niger Delta University of Science and Technology to the Federal Executive Council.

He said that the federal government had a new vision for all oil producing areas of the Niger Delta as a fresh commitment of all stakeholders to be involved in the development of the areas.

He said the federal government would partner the states, local governments, oil majors and to facilitate the development of the region.

“Every stakeholder will be involved,” he assured but added that oil exploitation alone could not ensure the provision of jobs for the teeming youth.

Accordingly, he said it was the business of industrialists to develop industries especially in the petrochemical for more job creation.

He said government would build modular refineries in the region which would engage those involved in building illegal refineries and polluting the environment.

He also noted that it was the intention of the administration to site more power plants in the oil region to utilise the gas resources effectively.

Mr. Osinbajo said there was the need to attract investments in the region but stressed the need for peace and secure environment as a precondition.

“Investments have a choice; they go to where they will find security,” he said.

He said the future has now arrived for the oil region but the stakeholders must address the concerns of the region by ensuring a peaceful environment.

According to him, destroying oil facilities is not the solution but rather providing the facilities and protecting them.

The acting president urged the people to hold contractors to account, adding that all federal projects meant for the communities must come to them.

He told them that President Muhammadu Buhari took Imo as his home and had pledged that justice would be done to the people.

“Peace and justice go together,” he advised while assuring the state of its fair share in the administration’s social investment programmes.

    Let’s be honest with ourselves.
I invite Nigerians to follow me to imagine how peaceful, united, progressive and happy this nation would have been if Buhari have on assumption of office, embarked on a leadership of National unity where every zone of Nigeria is well and sincerely represented, honoured and carried along in the kitchen cabinet, security, legislative leadership of Nigeria. What would have been the condition of Nigeria today if Buhari did not operate a government where the old eastern region was humiliated, discriminated, marginalized, cheated and punished because they voted Jonathan in 2015 elections.
Buhari is the one that have allowed himself to be used by the devil to sow anger, pain, disunity, hate and wickedness amongst Nigerians. No president of Nigeria have allowed hate, vindictiveness, religious, ethnic, malicious bigotry to dictate the pace of his life and government like Buhari is presently doing with his nepostic, bankrupt, integrity deficiency government.
My prayers is that God of heaven shall touch Buharis stony vindictive hate overwhelmed heart so that he can see and understand that in unity lies the strength of Nigeria and in division lies the destruction of Nigeria.
The most needed ingredients for unity is justice, equity, sincerity, fairness, forgiveness, love and tolerance. Buhari must imbibe those virtues for him to be respected and honoured as an elderly statesman and the president of Nigeria.
Those who are afraid that osibanjo shall steal the show from Buhari must counsel Buhari to learn some few lessons about how osibanjo is taking the whole nation as his own not minding religious, tribal, ethnic, party affiliations .and sincerely showing the traits of a sincere father to all Nigerians.
Thumbs up for the acting president, this is the right way to follow and every patriotic citizen shall support you. Equity, justice and fairness is the golden keys to Nigerian unity, progress and prosperity .God bless you.

In a democracy, there are different shades of opinion and divisions exist all over the world so I do not share in your utopian dream, there are always choices and choices have consequences. The problem is that Nigerians are a different breed of human beings, negatively I must say,the colonial masters complained about the nature of the Nigerian especially the Igbo man who made it difficult for indirect rule to succeed and the reasons were simple,Ndi Igbo do not recognize central authority and if you wish to be sincere, things have not changed.Buhari since coming to power has not done anything to warrant the type of hatred and wickedness shown to him,it is only the corrupt and uninformed ones who were destroying Nigeria thinking it is Buhari they are attacking that were offended,Buhari has done more for Ndi Igbo since coming to power than Jonathan did with all the billions available to him yet why do some people hate him so much? If you wish to know what Nigeria’s problem is,look into the mirror and ask that person what his contribution has been to making Nigeria great.

      Useless post

It looks like a Osinbajo will be a better President.

    • jamajake

      No doubt about that

    • Rommel

Apart from going round the Niger delta and shaking hands with people who want to feel important, what else has he done? you must understand that Nigerians are sycophants and PMB does not like that, this is why so many people are uncomfortable with his style

      • Right Minded

Can your Illiterate Buhari step his stinking gworo foot on any soil in the Niger Delta? He has been going round the stinking North attending ordinary town hall meetings but has never step his smelly foot on any Niger Delta state since he fraudulently became the President of Nigeria. The peace Prof Osibanjo has achieved in the Niger Delta in his few days as Ag President can never be achieved by your incapacitated Buhari if he was around.

    • Right Minded

There is a difference between a professor pf law (SAN) and a stack illiterate who doesnt even have a secondary school cert. We are seeing the difference now. I know the Northern cabal must be bitter about the progress being achieved by the Ag President Professor Osinbajo.

  • Curseless

I believe we are seeing the beginning of a new dawn. At least for once those shameless Nigerian contractors who have collected contract money and deserted the work site will have to reckon with their misdeeds. Many of them have no idea of what to do from the beginning and all they do is resell or transfer the contract to someone else after they have extracted their own so called “national cake” or better still ” dividend of democracy” and take a flight. Host communities sometimes collude with these shady characters to the detriment of an average man/woman who would have benefited from such development. It is my prayer that God will grant the Vice President the strength and wisdom to stamp this practice out for good.

Buhari know that Osinbajo would be the next after him, dont be surprise Nigeria.
