The House of Representatives on Wednesday forwarded President Buhari’s request for virement in the 2016 budget to its Appropriation Committee for further legislative action.
The lawmakers reached the decision after reading the N180 billion request, first sent on October 25, for the second time.
Majority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila, moved the motion for the president’s request to be granted expedited approval due to its emergency.
Mr. Gbajabiamila said several government agencies and parastatals are currently in need of funding due to the shortfall in the 2016 budget projections.
Deputy Speaker Yusuf Lasun, who presided over the plenary on Wednesday, ruled that Mr. Gbajabiamila’s request was unanimously accepted and urged the Appropriation Committee to take up the proposal for due consideration and report back to the House.
In his October 25 letter, Mr. Buhari detailed the urgency of his request to lawmakers.
“In the course of implementing the 2016 Appropriation Act, several MDAs have presented issues pertaining to salary shortfalls, the settlement of part of which has led to the depletion of the Public Service Wage Adjustment.
“This Vote, which had a provision of N33, 597,400,000, now has a balance of N2, 758,296,000,” Mr. Buhari said while listing other areas that need urgent financial injection.
