Without Buhari, Nigeria may have ceased to exist – Itse Sagay

prof-itse-sagay-1

The Chairman of Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption, Itse Sagay, on Monday said Nigerians have a lot to be grateful for in electing Muhammadu Buhari their president last year.

“If Buhari had not come, I don’t think there would have been a country,” Mr. Sagay said. “Zimbabwe would have been better.”

Mr. Sagay’s opinion was contained in a statement he delivered at an event held to appraise the one year since the creation of his committee.

After making recommendations that he believed could improve the fight against corruption, Mr. Sagay used the rest of his speech to paint the gloomiest picture of Nigeria if the then ruling party, PDP, had remained in power for another year.

Mr. Sagay said corruption was so pervasive under successive PDP administrations that judges allegedly allowed themselves to become a rubber stamp for electoral malpractice.

The law professor and strong ally of Mr. Buhari said such vices, and others similar to them, were responsible for the prevailing level of mediocrity in governance.

“We know of some governors who are not supposed to be there, but found themselves on the bloody seats with the help of some judges,” Mr. Sagay said.

But PDP spokesman, Dayo Adeyeye, said Mr. Sagay’s comments constitute an embarrassment to him and his legal profession.

“Itse Sagay is someone who is widely known to make statements that embarrass not only himself but the legal profession he purports to represent,” Mr. Adeyeye told PREMIUM TIMES Monday afternoon.

“This is because Nigerians know that the country would have been far better than now were PDP still in power,” Mr. Adeyeye said. “He is defending a man who plunged Nigeria’s economy into recession within one year.”

“He calls himself an academic who knows the rule of law and he’s supporting actions that portend grave danger for the country and they’re running Nigeria like a jungle,” Mr. Adeyeye said.

Mr. Sagay also weighed in on the recent crackdown on judges by the State Security Service, suggesting that such measures were necessary to bring about a robust and dignified judiciary.

“We need the judiciary, but we need an upright judiciary. If we don’t have a judiciary with moral integrity, then we don’t have a democracy.

“No agency would have dared to arrest (Charles) Oputa, (Andrews) Obaseki, (Kayode) Eso, and some others. They gave judgments against the military governments. The moral authority of the golden era of the Supreme Court has crashed,” Mr. Sagay said.

Mr. Sagay’s committee recommended a plea bargaining mechanism as an efficient alternative means of settling corruption cases.

You see how our Southern Bankrupt intellectuals have ruined Nigeria. The same way they were working for Babangida and Abacha. All because of what they will eat.

  • joelaw

This Adeyeye of a man is living in coocoo’s land. How could another 4years of PDP be good for Nigeria. It is good to defend your party, but be reasonable please. The evidence is clear as to who got Nigeria into the present mess.

“If Buhari had not come, I don’t think there would have been a country,” Mr. Sagay said. “Zimbabwe would have been better.”

This claim is bogus and an insult to Nigerians including Mr. Sagay himself given the Neanderthal Buhari’s gross incompetence and record in government. If Buhari is the standard, it says a lot about the standard of Nigerians.

Indeed. Indeed Refined minds. Unfortunately as a student of philosophy and logic my mind has become unrefined. Do you perchance know what a syllogism is?

        • Man_Enough

Deductive reasoning (or syllogism for those in love with the bombast) should refine the mind. If your has become unrefined (as you said) then I should pass the question back to you.

  • thusspokez

“We need the judiciary, but we need an upright judiciary. If we don’t have a judiciary with moral integrity, then we don’t have a democracy.

Obviously, Mr Sagay is exaggerating the power of the judiciary vis-a-vis democracy. And I also believe that the words Mr. Sagay was looking for are impartiality and (lose of) legitimacy – not morality and the demise of democracy. He claims also undermines the fact that corruption in the judiciary is often initiated by second or third party who are often politicians, particularly the ruling elite of which he is a member.

  • Pirofessor2016

    Premium Times Editor,

Could someone send me the postal address of Professor Itse Sagay? I just want to send him a slim book –
actually 145 pages – titled INTRODUCTION TO LOGIC. He is not too old to learn that it is illogical to infer
a factual conclusion from the speculation he spun rather fancifully from his closed mind, almost like a
witch’s apprentice; without gumption or common sense, which could have paused him not to praise a
very useless BUHARI government for producing companies’ closure with 5 million retrenched so far.

    • Karl Imom

You sound very funny my friend. From the very little piece you have written, you come across as needing that BOOK more than professor Sagay. I am so sorry if the money you stole and banked in a hole in your bedroom has been retrieved by the Buhari government.

    • thusspokez

He is not too old to learn that it is illogical to infer a factual conclusion from the speculation

My comments elsewhere indirectly questioned his knowledge of Logic too. You wouldn’t know from his arguments that he is a Professor of Law — who is supposed to have sound grasp of Logic.

  • ficus

His statement is very provocative, did he know where we are today?

Where we are? Where in a situation where people prefer systematic killing of economy true stealing and treasury looting.

The Nigeria’s mainstream CSOs of Southwest or Lagos extraction undeniably provided “the technical know-how” that brought a contraption called “the Buhari Administration” to the country. That contraption is best described as “demo-dictatorship” or dictatorship created through a ballot box. Dictatorship is not born but made!

In other words, the makers of dictatorship afflicting Nigeria today are the mainstream CSOs under reference. The referenced mainstream CSOs got their hands soiled and conscience mortgaged unpardonably to the extent that many of them have frustratingly adopted conspiracy of silence under the Buhari’s demo-dictatorship while others choose to speak defensively in favour of Buhari’s dictatorial policies and actions through behind the scene or third parties or in the open.

The rest have shamelessly come out boldly as “protagonists of dictatorship”. Attempts made of late by these conscienceless and shackled CSOs to regurgitate or reprobate have also failed and backfired on account of the fact that you cannot eat your cake and have it back. This is more so when their oilers know where and how to get them entrapped using EFCC and DSS, in the event they try to opt out of the inglorious and unholy agreement.

It is clear to all and sundry that before their ignoble roles, the referenced CSOs were the soul and conscience of the country; voice of the voiceless and defenders of the defenceless!————————–

    • EFE

Reading your post really makes a patriotic Nigerian want to puke ! You were definitely benefiting from the status quo.

FG has done excellently in damage limitation and saving our Nation from Chaos. PDP need to apologise to the Nation rather blaming the FG.

Do you think, Boko haram suddenly came from nowhere, or you think is jonathan who proposed how to disorganized his government. You can see the writings on the wall, how it was planed for these girls to come back home. Please if you have access to YouTube, watch how Nigerian airforce, followed Boko haram in northern desert, for thirty minutes, tell me why one was not killed, about 400 were running and they all escaped, who ordered for them not to be killed, judge after you watch the video, is called nigeria chase Boko haram in the desert. Their biggest mistake was to show it to the world, they can no longer call the video back, is now a public information. Buhari governmemt set up Boko haram, they have archived what they wanted, the girls can now come home, two years in the forest, they don’t looke like one, who spent three days away from home.

No body will ever be surprised reading the position of Mr itse sagay, itse sagay and his junior brother keyemu came from the lost tribe of Judas Iscariot down south called itshekiri.a generation that can even blackmail God when they are turbo charged with the spirit of betrayal. Judas Iscariot betrayed his Lord and master into the hands of His enemies and haters with a landmark kiss not minding the consequences of his action. Itse sagay is possessed by the spirit of Judas Iscariot ,he can say anything and do anything provided that the act of betrayal can be performed.
On a more serious note, only a big f00l in the character and mould of itse sagay, could have made such an irresponsible ,infantile, shameful assertion as was made by sagay, his position is both defective, deformed and totally fallacious both in mind, senses and reasons. Before buhari,PDP had held Nigeria together for 16 solid years, the 16 solid years of PDP in truth and facts can only be described as the most prosperous years of Nigeria. Majority of Nigerians lived a more prosperous and good lives within that period. By the time buhari took over,a bag of rice was sold for 7000,flour ,8000,30 liters of vegetable oil 6000, a bag of cement 1350, a $ ,197, a litre of PMS 86 ,Diesl ,135 ,electricity 18 hours a day, local flight from Lagos to Abuja 10 k etc today after itse sagay s Messiah s 18 months,a bag of rice is now 24000, cement 2500, vegetable oil 20000 ,PMS 145,diesel 245 etc .many more Nigerians are out of jobs, foreign investors abandoned Nigeria, Nigeria crashed from Africa biggest economy to 36 position. Many more Nigerians are dying of insecurity, hunger, starvation and official security bullets.
Itse sagay is of his father the devil who had been a liar from beginning. Buhari is the worst thing to happen to Nigeria as far as leadership is concerned, buhari is a big disgrace calamity,a curse and a resounding shame and object of shame and ridicule on Nigeria. May curse be upon the generation bearing the spirit of Judas Iscariot, may shame be upon an old F00l who called evil good because of filthy lucre. Itse sagay is a shame to his descendants and generations.

And buhari have done your bit after 18 months of disaster, if buhari couldn’t better the lots of Nigeria, why destroy our beautiful nation?, today news reported that emirate and another airline have stopped flying to Abuja, imaging the burden it will put Nigerian citizens and hardship /unemployment it will create.buhari have dealt evil upon Nigeria and her citizens. It is a pity that buhari tsunami came to Nigeria when Nigeria was about taking Africa to a greater height and undermined our greatness.

Another praise singer, hoping to get crumbs off Buhari’s table, feeble minded men walking around with no brains. Sagay or whatever your name is, the dollar is pegged at almost 400 naira, herdsmen running wild, workers now have to fund projects at their jobs out of their pockets, underage girls being forced into marriages, food prices skyrocketing. If all these aforementioned ills plaguing our society, with this clueless gov’t at the helm of affairs, is your definition of good leadership, you really should go for a mental evaluation, because I’m pretty sure, something is not quite right upstairs.

Truth hurts and hurts deeply. The license and impunity to steal has been with us for a long time. What could have happened if Buhari did not step in and price of oil pummeled?
If any one denies the damage corruption has caused, look at our infrastructure, our institutions and our civil service/judiciary. For 16 years and beyond, budgets are passed and appropriated to what effect? You be the judge. Why has basic electricity supply eluded us for all these decades? How much was pumped into this vital sector and still we are in darkness. Who was responsible for our refineries incapacitated, the turnaround maintenance cost how much? Who stole all that amount because as of today we are still trying to resuscitate our refineries. In the first place why were they left to decay? Who owns oil wells in Nigeria, how did they acquire those and how has the average Nigeria benefitted from that. Why
are we unable to feed a population of less than 200 million while China feeds over 1 billion people?
Do we hate Nigeria so much that we don’t want to advance as other nations. If we hate progress so much, why do Nigerians run to every nook and corner of the world to escape the harsh realities at home?
There are those of us who love Nigeria that we need CORRUPTION to be killed for us to move forward. What in God’s name is wrong with that?

GEJ that was growing the economy on an average of 7% yearly is being disparaged by the enemies of the people because they know he may not respond. They think it a child’s play to manage Nigeria’s economy. So Sagay’s opinion is a lie. Let them take the critical economic indexes to the level they met it in May 29, 2015. It is they that is bringing Nigeria to what happened in Zimbabwe. God forbid them.
