Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s latest appointment to head the Lagos State Safety Commission is a fugitive in the U.S. convicted for credit card fraud in 1992.

Hakeem Dickson, who worked as an internal auditor at the now defunct Nigeria Airways, was sentenced to 24 years imprisonment by a U.S. District Court in New Jersey, according to court documents published by Sahara Reporters.

“For 20 years, Defendant successfully evaded all United States government efforts to locate and arrest him,” read the judgment delivered by Judge Dickinson Debevoise.

“He has not served the 24 months sentence lawfully imposed upon him in June 1992.”

The Lagos State Safety Commission is an agency saddled with the responsibility of safety regulations and enforcement in the State.

Habib Aruna, Mr. Ambode’s Spokesperson, said he did not author the government’s statement and was not aware of Mr. Dickson’s conviction.

“I didn’t sign the statement, it was the HOS (Head of Service). Call them or the commissioner and let them respond,” Mr. Aruna told PREMIUM TIMES.

Phone calls and text message to Steve Ayorinde, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, were not responded to.

According to a statement by the Lagos State government, Mr. Dickson’s appointment was in line with Governor Ambode’s commitment to turn the agency around for optimal performance.

Mr. Dickson holds a Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Arts from the Thomas A. Edison State College, Trenton, New Jersey U.S.A and two Masters Degrees in Business Administration specializing in Accounting and Finance respectively, both from the Fairleight Dickinson University, Rutherford, New Jersey, U.S.A.

After his stint at the Nigeria Airways, Mr. Dickson had worked as an accountant, auditor, and tax adviser for Coopers and Lybrand, CPA in Newark, New Jersey in the United States.

He then returned to the country, contested and won an election as the Executive Chairman of the Surulere Local Government between 1988 and 1994.

He is currently the C.E.O of Citiwide Construction and Transport Nigeria Limited which specializes in the construction of roads and buildings.

Good. Nigerians must know the antecedents of those proposed for public office. That is the foundation of instituting probity and integrity in government.
We should not, for purely politics, place a fugitive or ex-con in a position of public trust when the competent and morally upright abound in society and should be rewarded.

  • MammanJiyaVatsa

James Ibori, Tinunbu, Gbajabiamila, and that Ogun State PDP stalwart, forgot his name now, all had criminal records in the US & UK respectively.
Those are Nigerians who’s lived abroad in the 80’s.

AKIN AMBODE and RAJI FASHOLA are two sides of a coin. Both are rude and uncouth; reckless and crass,
with neither man too mentally bereft to think in logical sequence as a fit and proper person in public office.
The effect of one tragedy after another in Lagos is the 536 billion Naira debt Raji Fashola left behind,
after blowing away 3,2 trillion Naira revenue on painting white elephants. Lagos state’s $2billion debt
today means 880 billion Naira debt at street value. This is what happens when certificates are
hoisted before Lagosians as ability to reason; rather than reasoning in public domain itself.

For sure: CRIMINALS RULE NIGERIA! THAT IS WHY THE COUNTRY IS SO BADLY MANAGED AND IN THE CONDITION SHE IS RIGHT NOW!

The fact of the matter is that many of the guys running Nigeria are criminals (Buhari, Tinubu, Aregbesola, Oshiomole, Kashamu; to name but a few. So, Dickson’s case isn’t unusual.

Ambrose and his advisers should be ashamed of themselves. Since 1999, Lagos state has always appointed very shady characters based on sentiments and also cos they are true indigenes of Lagos state. The state has always discriminated against other tribes even other Yorubas cos they are not originally from Lagos state.

    • akindees

@sammyctuode:disqus: I have always heard that ignorance is a disease. I never knew the practical meaning until
i saw the continuing utter destruction of Lagos state by the trio of Bola Tinubu, Raji Fashola and Akin Ambode.
Never since October 1st 1960 has Lagos (state) been as illiterate as it has become between 1999 and 2016.
Besides the ‘foreign residents’ from other states seven out of indigenous Lagosians today cannot read or write.
Average failure rate at Wasc exams has been 75% from 1999 and the effect of mass illiteracy is devastating.
Civilization recedes as illiteracy rises and violence erupts from Lagos youths who’re mostly un-employable.
The damaging trio of Tinubu, Fashola and Ambode continue(d) in folly and ignorance to tar existing roads.

      • Omo O’oodua

NO, NO, THEY ARE NOT AN IGNORANT TRIO. THEY OWN THE ROAD BUILDING COMPANIES.

TARRING EXISTING ROAD IS THE PRIORITY OF LAGOS STATE JUST TO ROB THE TREASURY.

        • Zeetabetaphi

          @sammyctuode:disqus

In the year 2012, Lagos state floated a bond for ₦87.5billion in November to be borrowed at 14.5%
interest rate and then got public investors to subscribe for repayment with interest, but once the bond was fully subscribed, Raji Fashola took 40% of the money, about 35 billion Naira or so, and handed it over in cash to Bola Tinubu, via bogus corporate fronts, namely: (a) Lekki Concession Company, (b) ARM company, and, (c) Hitech company; in a fraudulent “buy-back deal” of a supposed concession right on the 15-kilometre Lekki Expressway.

          This patently corrupt deal was
ostensibly to buy back Lagos state ‘concession rights’ on that Lekki tolled Expressway, according to the usually corrupt Raji Fashola. But what the dull and dishonest Raji Fashola did not say is that the Lekki land at issue belongs to Lagos state and was not sold to Bola Tinubu’s companies
in the first place. Or did Bola Tinubu’s company invest any 35 billion Naira in expanding
          the road.

          In other words, by sheer fraud, Raji Fashola paid Bola Tinubu 25 years’ profit upfront in cash;
without further work. A lien was then imposed on Lagos state allocation of federal revenue for
the next three years to pay for this 87.5 billion Naira bond debt by all Lagos residents
          through taxes and levies.

CRIMINALS RUN THE GOVERNMENT OF LAGOS STATE FROM 1999 WITH THE CONSENT OF THE PEOPLE!

Bourdillon comes to mind, Lagos richest landlord ati his criminal gangs have held the state to ransom in more than a decade.
