Senate rejects Tinubu’s bill seeking special grant for Lagos

market1

The Nigerian Senate has voted against a bill seeking special status and federal grant for Lagos State.

The bill sponsored by Oluremi Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress Senator representing Lagos Central, was rejected on Wednesday after failing a voice vote called by Ike Ekweremadu.

Consequently, the bill, SB 112, failed to scale second reading for committee stage.

It sought one per cent of federally generated revenue as special grant for Lagos State in view of the former Nigeria capital’s socio-economic significance.

More to come…

  • Bayo

Senator Hope uzodima of imo state champion the rejection.
I have been telling my Yoruba brothers that ibos hate them but they won’t listen.

    • nixon

from your reasoning, if hope uzodinma is from the east, then all ibos must hate the Yorubas. Therefore if he is a Nigerian, then all Nigerians must hate Yorubas too. Does that make sense to you bayo. We don’t hate you, we just don’t know why you cannot learn from history.

    • Factsay

Greedy person. Lagos shud pay other states for what lagos inherited from Nigeria. Our money was used to build lagos. Stateless Tinubu is now claiming Lagos

    • UOU

Igbo senators are only about 15 minus the deputy senate president then 14. Yoruba senators are 21 or so…wicked man, how come its 15 senators from Igboland(minority)that will stop a bill that needs majority votes, meaning yorubas also voted against the ethnic bill and what of the north that has 75% of the numbers in senate? Liar, propagandists hate tribalistic, now its Igbos that you will blame, they are your headache and they will be your cancer forever. Go ahead, spread the lies to your people, don’t wait a second, coward

      • Dele Awogbeoba

Igbo SE senators stands at 15. If you add 1 from Delta North and 2 Ikwerre from Rivers then you get 18. In any event, one good turn deserves another. No doubt the Yoruba response will come on the issue of an extra SE state.

        • UOU

Nonsense, who is asking you for extra state, this shows how empty you are and also the level of your charlatanism yet you claim intellectualism. What igbos are asking is justice, fair play and level playing ground so that everyone can compete and progress while you people are playing up sentiments for hate, greed and backwardness. Igbos needs to be on their own, let yoruba be on their own same as hausa, etc, let everyone develop in their own pace, if I come to yoruba land, treat me like you treat ethopian same if you goto Igboland. Above all, if you add 1 from delta and 2 from rivers then you add, those yorubas from Edo, Kwara and Kogi still yorubas are in the majority. Your hatred, lies and propaganda against Igbos will give you hypertension and make you look so old, older than your age and even keep you backward n whatever you are doing since you have chosen that as a vocation

Monkey, do Yoros love Igbos? The bill was a fraud that should not have entertained in the first place… Yoro thieves wanting special status after all the unscrupulous taxes they impose on Igbo businessmen in Lagos. Animals!

you dont have to fall to his level always.

    • Otile

F○○l, you and your aburo dada are the haters here. Don’t you see that Ebola Tinubu and his family are too greedy. Lagos was built with common wealth yet she is asking for more welfare for the city. Why not give that cut to PH because Pitakwa deserves the money?

    • Dele Awogbeoba

Always happens. Give it a week and these same people will be asking for Yoruba support for an issue to advances igbo self interest. LMAO.

      • Höly Wähala

Monkey… I have noted your one week timeline, will refresh your bigoted mind anywhere I catch you one week from now. Yoro thieves, what was her reason for the special status bill? Lazy bastards, always looking for cheap money.

        • Dele Awogbeoba

I will remind you of that the next time SE demands an extra state (which is coded language for additional funding and extra places for the igbo in federal schools and the federal civil service and the the Federal Executive council).

Just in case your brain cannot comprehend it, it is a subtle request for the return of some of the VAT taken from Lagos state each year. A form of resource control if you like. The SS equivalent of NNDC, amnesty and Niger delta ministry.

          • McAlfred Uta

You sure are a philistic low life servant to your Northern superior masters. A region with 15 out of 109 senators scuttled your 1% revenue dream. Isn’t it obvious that you are so cowardly subservient to the northern region that you are afraid of even blaming them for your Master Tinubu’s loss of extra income. Come the day it will remain you and northerners in a country without SE and SS, you will cringe into cleaning their buttocks and eating left overs. Get a life and call a spade a spade and leave your so called 18 senators (16%) who successfully defeated you. It is heartening to hear that there are majority Igbos in Rivers (2 out of 3 Senators). What an imbecilic low life slavish life you just cponfirmed as your personality..

          • Höly Wähala

  • Dr Pat Kolawole Awosan

Lagos State, being the former federal capital of Nigeria, deserves a special grant and special status from the Nigerian federal authorities as it is done in USA to New York, and as it is practiced elsewhere around the world. With the national assembly rejection of this bill,Lagos State too must develop a bill that will make Lagos State, an unwelcoming state to people from other states of the federation especially, from the eastern and Northern parts of the country.Lagos must put its own citizens and tribe first.

    • Kudo

The difference in this situation is that Americans see themselves as one nation, Nigeria is not. As proven before, Yoruba people in Lagos state including the Oba of Lagos wanted the Igbos to leave Lagos and die in the lagoon. And now, Tinubu is asking for federal grant, it cannot work.

    • FuzzyLogic

I don’t know whether you mean New York city or the state of New York. New York (city or state) was never a former capital of the USA. In any case none of them enjoys any special privilege that is not available to other states and cities in the US.

      • PolyGon2013

Wrong. New York City does enjoy special status. Moreover, NYC was the capital of US until 1790 before the role was transferred to Philadelphia.

        • FuzzyLogic

You are correct. I did not know that till now. I bet you overwhelming majority of Americans don’t know that either.

          • George

            Tinubu is a bastard

  • thusspokez

The Nigerian Senate has voted against a bill seeking special status and federal grant for Lagos State.

How dare Lagos ask for even an extra kobo? From British colonial times to this day, Lagos continues to enjoy preferential treatments and federal largess more than any city in Nigeria. Granted, you would think that Lagos would, by now, be a world-class city like New York, London, Paris, Tokyo, etc. Instead Lagos is a first-class SLUM CITY and sħit-høle; it produces 90% of Nigeria’s Internet scammers; 80% of the crooks, looters and thieves arrested by the law enforcement agencies.

In early 2016, the Buhari administration approved a $200 million loan from a World Bank agency to Lagos state. The loan was part of a total of $600 million lent by the International Development Association to Lagos state since 2010. What has Lagos state done with the recent $200 million or $600 million?

I am glad that the bill failed. No one can now claim that Lagos is for all. It is time for Lagos State Gov to either send all unemployed non indigenes packing or levy an Indigene taxed on them

    • 9ja imports army uniform,

Are we really serious about looking inwards to get Nigeria out of the economic recession? How serious are we in achieving the much-touted diversification of the economy? What policies do we have binding all arms and departments of government to ensure that goods that can be manufactured in Nigeria are no longer imported from foreign economies? Are government departments really adhering to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN’s) 41 prohibited items for the foreign exchange support of their importation? These questions arise in the face of the continued patronage of foreign manufactured goods even by governmental organs when such goods can be cheaply and efficiently procured from our local artisans and manufacturers. Worthy of particular mention is the reported importation by the military authorities of military gears, including footwear, berets, cardigans, belts, head warmers, and branded stockings from foreign markets worth 4.9 billion Naira or $14.1m (at the exchange rate of N305 per Dollar).

As Fela will say; “teacher, a beg don’t teach me nonsense”, All you have written na grammar to my ear. As per the issue, Lagos must do the right thing by generating more income by taxing all non-indigenes.
Niger Delta gets 13% derivative for their oil. I support the payment, even though they have nothing to show for it because Madam Peace, her husband and their governors chose to spend it yafunyafun.
Abuja as the capital of the country have a state status with budget allocation. The question is why not Lagos ?
Lagos as the economic capital of Nigeria deserves some derivative to support thousands of non-indigenes who are chooking up the small land mass.
Lagos has survived so far because of the imagination and the ingenuity of the Yoruba administrators contrary to the claim of Igbos.

Lagos is the indisputable commercial nerve center of Nigeria, almost every body from the villages and hinterland flood to the city on daily basis. Na Lagos i dey, is the song they all sing. Every politician and looters want a piece of Lagos, and the city is carrying far greater load than any other city in Nigeria, this is just the truth. Lagos is unique, and there is no other city to compare. The busiest, sea and air ports including headquarters for most banks are located there It is share pedestrian argument for anyone to suggest Lagos should not be given some leverage or preferential treatment unless it is extended to other cities. To start with, even though the state is a Yoruba state, yet, it is the most integrated city with virtually every tribe residing there contributing one way or the other to her growth. The guys from Abuja wanting a piece of Lekki, v.i, Ikoyi, and Ikeja should be made to pay higher taxes and tenement rates.

And where do you think that the money the Nigerian government continues to spend on Lagos comes from?

Even if the whole Nigerian budget were to be given to Lagos state, Lagos would still be first-class slum city and sħit-høle. You need to get out of that sħit-høle and visit the world’s other commercial capitals and see for yourself what they have achieved with nothing or nothing near the money and preferential treatments that Lagos gets from the FGN.
