Nigeria’s Information Minister threatens to sue newspaper

Nigeria’s Minister for Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has threatened to sue the Daily Independent newspaper for libel over a news report that the ‘Change Begins With Me’ concept was stolen by the minister, and that the launch of the campaign gulped N3.4 billion.

Mr. Mohammed has also threatened to sue Akin Fadeyi, a creative artist and former head of communications at Airtel Nigeria, and one Omo Bazuaye for allegedly claiming that he stole the campaign concept from them.

President Muhammadu Buhari on September 8 launched the national re-orientation campaign, in Abuja, to reset the nation’s decaying value system. But the event was immediately tainted with allegations of copyright theft.

The Information Minister, through his lawyers, Falana & Falana’s Chambers, said his reputation has been badly hurt by these allegations.

The minister, through separate letters, gave the newspaper and the duo of Mr. Fadeyi and Mr. Bazuaye seven days to retract the “libelous” statements or be ready to meet him in court.

    Premium Times Editor,

Why BUHARI government fails and falters in a mess

There is too much stealing in the APC rags dragged into government as officials –
none of whom comes into public office with any long-known reputation for honesty.
The Buhari government is a complete mess as a collection of morally empty folks.

What’s worse is a preponderance of dullards inside the federal government today.
Eighty per cent of federal officials were appointed on their credentials as Muslims.
Not one person was appointed as Minister or Adviser on the basis of good intellect.

Good one from HMIC, those idiots akin fadeyi and omo bazuaye just want to be a public figure through HMIC but have fail big time, they should retract the “libelous”or meet in court
    God bless Nigeria

  • woman leader1

It is high time akin fedeyi, omo bazuaye and the rest to retract the “libelous” or meet in court
This is a ploy to distract HMIC but they have failed

  • Aremu Mathew Okikiolu

Ignorance is bliss. Do you have the facts other than assumptions and wild guesses? You are not a judge or a court of law to make any lousy pronouncement on mere allegations. Have heard the stories of the accused?

  • Francis Ajayi

I have had so many threats of “retract-withing-so-and-so-days or-face-prosecusion” in the past but hardly heard or read about how the retreats are resolved. I have the impression that the retracts are solemnly resolved under the table. If these threats are truly settled legally or otherwise and made public, I bet people or papers would do some investigative reporting rather than feeding the public with lies and lies with impunity.

    • SB

Egbon this one will not be one of those cases swept under the carpet. That time has gone.

    • progressive

The hmic have taken the right step kudos

    • This will be a different one…

    • paul irumundomon

The same newsoapers, reported that buhari did not have enough money to buy generator, in his house, nobody has taken them to court. They lied, because at the same time, his two kids were in England, studying, and as foreign students. A good generator in Nigeria, is about three million naira for a private home. A round trip first class ticket, from Nigeria to England is more that three million for two students. Just tickets, not school fees and accommodations. If we must prosecute, it should be accross board, they should not cherry pick, only when it favors them.

      • bello williams

Thx guy some nigerians are just too lazy to think, very gullible

    • Sincere-Voice

You’re right, but I would love to see this particicular sorted out publicly. This news paper are good at reporting jargons.

  • OMOLOYIN

Investigative journalism should be the core of journalism. They should retract their libelious statement or meet in court

  • I hope the accusers are ready to explain how?

  • Realitytalk

That is the good step, they should sue them not drag them into the mess, those guys are bunch of confused nigga

  • excel

Good one, those frustrated brat need to face the music. If their allegation were true, they would have been running from one media to another. For weeks now they have gone underground since they can not substantial the false allegation against the HMIC.

  • Sincere-Voice

Those guys are bad. They should be dealt with. There intention is to rubbish the good work of the man.
