Suspected gunmen on Wednesday attacked the Nigeria Television Authority, NTA, office in Onitsha, Anambra State, torching some equipment and Star Times section in the premises.

The Acting Manager of the station, Chris Nwigwe, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Onitsha that the incident occurred at about 1.40 a.m.

“Some armed men tried to attack the staff on duty but only succeeded in burning down the Star Times building,” he said.

He added that no life was lost in the attack.

A witness said an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was planted at the security post of the station, while tyres were set around the premises to set the station ablaze.

“There was a gun duel between the armed men and policemen who were manning the office.

“They managed to burn down the Star Times office while the fire was later put out with the help of people around.

“This type of incident has never happened,” the source said.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Sam Okaula, who visited the scene with the Anti-Bomb Squad to evacuate the explosive device, confirmed that three suspects had been arrested in connection with the incident.

He said that investigation had begun to unravel the reason for the attack.

Mr. Okaula lauded police officers manning the office for their bravery. He said their quick intervention prevented loss of lives and destruction of more property in the attack.

He warned people against taking laws into their hands, and assured that the police would get to the root of the incident.

“Those who take laws into their hands should be ready to face the repercussion,” he stressed, adding that the suspects would be prosecuted in court after investigation was concluded.

NAN reports that three police patrol vans had been stationed in front of the station to beef up security.

NTA should make sure that building isn’t rebuilt or relocated to another part of Onitsha and I see no reason why NTA should even have a station in Anambra. Sack the workers and go back to Lagos or Abuja.

Let the people have their beloved Radio Biafra and BiafraTV and not the useless Nigerian Television Authority. Nigeria is the population of Spain, Italy, Germany and United Kingdom put together. It (Nigeria) therefore has no business being a country. Britain committed crime against humanity in 1914 when they amalgamated several countries in West Africa to from a Nigeria. This should be reversed and we can conduct a referendum asap before lives are lost and more violence become the order of the day.

    • Chukwuka Okoroafor

So you use those four countries’ populations to justify breaking up Nigeria? Then would you say that the U.S. that has roughly twice as many people as Nigeria should break up too? China? India? Perhaps you would make some sense if you agreed to that.

        1. Chinese speak one language
        2. Americans speak one language
        3. Germans speak one language
        4. United Kingdom speak one language
        5. Spaniards speak one language
        6. Italians speak one language
        7. Portuguese Speak one language
        8. Russians speak one language
        9. Etc, etc, etc…

…In Europe, every country speaks one major language and has one major culture. The only exception were former Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia and the two countries fought the most brutal wars of the 21st century and broke up. Since the break ups, the emergent countries have been peacefully peaceful…And so it will be in perpetuity. In Nigeria we have 375 Languages and about 7 Major languages. So we can effectively break up into 7 countries. There are more people who speak Edo language than are people in Estonia. It is an Estonian who invented Skype!

        BOTTOM LINE!
One language. one culture and one people. This is the bond. Nigeria is NOT a country. The earlier we break up the better for the living and the dead.

Actually you are wrong about almost every country. Spain for instance is a multi-lingual country. Yes Spanish is the official language but they have at least six other regional languages, similar to Nigeria. Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales have their own unique languages. Russia has minority languages. China actually has 55 ethnic groups, it is just that the Han Chinese are the most dominant. So you are speaking of multi-linguistic states as one culture and people. Germany even was once multi-ethnic and multi-cultural before 1871 when they decided to call themselves Germans. Nigeria now unofficially has Pidgin that combines altered English with Igbo, Yoruba, and Hausa. Doesn’t that bind us at least at a minimal level? Let us not forget that English is the official language just like multi-cultural societies the U.K. and U.S. It is our foundational issues as well as the individuals who profit from division that have blocked us from true unity. We must deal with these things and it is possible to deal with them. Also, many of the rump states have not been peaceful as you claimed. For an Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, there is a Ukraine, Georgia, and Turkmenistan that have either descended into civil war, have new secessionist movements, or became very repressive. Even Czech Republic, that had the Velvet divorce from Slovakia, has two autonomy movements (which can lead to secession later). So, is that your idea of a happy ending?

First things first. Change your ‘Monica’ to your real name and identity. That an Oluwole like you will post your comment and pretend to be a Biafran is itself more than sufficient reason for a breakup of Nigeria. Who wants to share the same passports with pathological traitors and turn coats? I did not read beyond your fake name.

          • Chukwuka Okoroafor

You must mean ‘Monkier.’ Anyway, I counter you with facts that can be easily verified with some deeper research and you respond with child-like rantings and conspiracy theories? I think you are out of wise counsel my friend.

          • emmanuel

Dont bother thyself my dear “Olatunde Oluwole Abayomi” aka Chukwuka, Nigeria had gone beyond redemption. Breakup is imminently inevitable! In fact, to delay the breakup will be very dangerous for everybody.

          • Chukwuka Okoroafor

And the same thing was said in 1967 and 1993 yet disintegration did not happen. Something is holding us together and I believe we will get through this time. The question will be will we be able to shut down the Islamist agenda? That is what will destroy Nigeria in the long run. Even if I were ‘Olatunde Oluwole Abayomi’, what I said in my previous post was the truth and nothing but the truth. So why would I hide behind another name if I am speaking historical fact? It doesn’t make much sense logically. Maybe you can explain it to me in your wisdom.

          • Otile

China left Taiwan alone to prosper, Nigeria must leave Biafra alone to prosper. China has not invaded Hong Kong, see how Hong Kong is prospering. Leave Biafra alone you will get a superb African nation in no time.

          • Chukwuka Okoroafor

Hong Kong is still part of China. Remember ‘One nation, two systems’? Taiwan is also part of China under Chinese and International law although autonomous from Beijing. I do believe in devolution and freeing the SE economically will lead to Nigeria’s recovery and greatness. I do not believe in disintegration of Nigeria however.

        • Chukwuka Okoroafor

Yes, I almost forgot. Italy that is supposedly one ethnic group with one language has a secessionist movement in Venice. Somalia that is a nation of mostly one ethnic group and language also has semi-autonomous Somaliland that claims that it is its own country. So one ethnic group and language does not guarantee unity. I would have a rethink of this theory.

          Scientific! Fact!

          • Chukwuka Okoroafor

What is scientific about what he said? Perhaps there are facts in his posts, but there are facts that also refuted quite a bit of his claims.

        • Oneman

Nonsense analysis. Biafraud will be doomed if there is going to be any separation ever.

  • mconzend

I condenn this act ofviolence. However it must be noted that NTA is used by the govt to create faulse impression on economy and others. They say all is well when nothing is in order. I have stopped taking news on nta serious. Those aggrieved should have used proper non violence means to express their anger. Again there other channels to tune to and get real information.

  • SS Liman

that’s Act of dubious Igbos who drive their main idea from the shadow of inconsistence Biafra Rep, what’s wrong with NTA, why you can’t go to police station or military barracks to bring it down, anyone who think Nigeria can be separated in near 1million years he’s just Taking his dack nd negative ideas as positivism, think again and again, I can’t blame you the current generation who are busy always open their dirty mouth to speak about separation, go home and ask your grand father who could be the sole victim, if History of 1967 to 1970 can repeate it self Today again.
