We cannot “separate the present from the past,” Buhari says in Sallah message

Buhari in France

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday reassured Nigerians that his administration was committed to removing “the hardships the country is going through.”

In a Sallah message to Nigerians to mark Monday’s Eid-el-Kabir, Mr. Buhari explained that “the present recession is as a result of cumulative effects of worldwide economic downturn and failure in the past to plan and save for difficult times.”

“It is impossible to separate the present from the past to appreciate the extent to which mistakes of the past are affecting everyday life today,” he said.

He highlighted various sectors his administration was working on to improve the life of Nigerians.

Read the president’s full statement below:

Fellow Compatriots, as you celebrate the Eid-El-Kabir, I salute your steadfastness in spite of the difficult economic times the country is going through.

The lessons of the Eid are piety and sacrifice and, my dear brothers and sisters, you have exhibited these in equal measure.

The present recession is as a result of cumulative effects of worldwide economic downturn and failure in the past to plan and save for difficult times. It is impossible to separate the present from the past to appreciate the extent to which mistakes of the past are affecting everyday life today.

I assure you that this administration is working round the clock to remove the hardships the country is going through. Rail and road constructions, projects in the housing sector, support for farmers and for small and medium scale industries, youth and women’s empowerment programmes, support for revival of industries are all designed to reinvigorate the economy and enhance living standards of ordinary people.

We are getting security right. We are stopping corruption in its tracks and we will get the economy right by the Grace of God.

I enjoin Muslims to live by the dictates of Islam, to keep good relationships with their Christian brothers and sisters and as patriots to maintain the spirit of the Nigerian nation.

I wish everyone happy holidays.

Muhammadu Buhari

You are on the right track. Allah will guide you and keep you on it.

  • Otile

May Allah provide Northern people with longer recession. Amin.

    • Rommel

Be careful what you wish for because the north farms the food Nigerians eat,the other day when they had problems with ordinary tomato,Nigeria nearly caught fire

      • Otile

Nature provided everybody enough land, water, crops, animals and other resources to sustain life. My people have never depended solely on food from the North. With or without the North life will go on among my people. Only lazy people can lack food, only lazy people can invade other people to sustain their own lazy miserable lives. You know what I am talking about.

        • Rommel

Like I said,be careful what you wish for,you know what they say about spitting against the wind

          • Otile

Tell your Fulani masters to stop invading the Niger Delta to steal and feed their lazy people. Let then study, work hard and leave others to develop with their God given resources. Lazy parasites.

          • Rommel

The laziest Nigerians today are people from the Niger delta, what do you mean by God given resources? did you contribute in putting crude oil into the ground or what role do you play in its extraction? the north contributes food which they grow with their hands, what do you contribute to Nigeria?

          • Otile

You are an extortionist. The North does not contribute any food or any thing to Niger Delta. The noble people of Niger Delta produce and buy their own food. Why can’t the North feed millions of their hungry people, wherefore does NGOs and other world bodies continue to donate food to the lazy starving people of the North if you claim that they contribute food? How did the North contribute in extracting oil in the Niger Delta? Who are their scientists? Walk away from the Niger Delta for 6 moons and see whether the North will not perish. Ungrateful parasites.

          • Rommel

You need to go get educated about how oil discovery was funded, your people are lazy, only thing they know is criminality and bursting of pipelines, this has been going on since 1970’s yet you blame oil majors for degradation,

          • ukoette ibekwe

Why not provide the information on how oil exploration is funded.
Yes you are right that Niger Deltans did not put the oil in the ground neither did you or anyone else who is not a Niger Deltan. But you know what they discovered the area, endured the conditions of the area and made it their home for ages.
So they have natural rights to their land just like you have to yours where ever that is.
And when you mention oil exploration. Who first explored oil in Nigeria. Since you have no idea of the history of oil in Nigeria. Obj and his government nationalized the assets of shell petroleum and established NNPC. About that time Nigeria only earned royalties from oil.
So tell us how was oil exploration funded.
To be an oppressor and a bully doesn’t make one a saint.

          • Rommel

Was it only the assets of Shell that was nationalized then and what was the reason for that exercise? besides,do you know what the contribution of crude oil was to Nigeria’s GDP at the time of the said nationalization?

          • Otile

Of what use are your_stupid questions …bla bla bla Was it only the assets of Shell that was nationalized then and what was the reason for that exercise…bla bla bla. The people of Niger Delta never asked the parasites to nationalize their oil and distribute it to Danjuma, emirs and other Fulani thieves. Stop asking senseless questions.

          • Otile

You are the person who needs to get educated about how the oil discovery was funded. You dishonestly claim that groundnuts funded the oil. No sir, Shell BP was responsible for the funding. The North cannot feed themselves how much funding a useful project. Be honest for once. Parasite.

        • Rommel

If what you say is true, why then are your youths mainly armed robbers, militants and kidnappers?

    • Eluba Inas

You never stop thinking from your anus.

      • Otile

So, you know how to think from your anus. Wallahi

  • Rommel

Do Christians in Nigeria live in peace with traditional worshippers?

    • Otile

Why do you ask? Do you Mohammedans live in peace with those you refer to as infidels?

      • Rommel

Seems to me that the only peaceful people are traditional worshippers but just answer the 4king question, besides who you calling Mohammedan? are you on speed or something?

      • dele20

There should no be discrimination among us both muslims & Christians should see themselves as one family, that is the message PMB is passing across

    • dele20

There should no be discrimination among us both muslims & Christians should see themselves as one family, that is the message PMB is passing across….

      • Truth Justice Equity

But the same buhari is fueling discrimination, hate, cheating, tribal, ethnic and religious bigotry amongst Nigerians through his malicious ,clannish, discriminatory, hate practices and acts in office.

        • dele20

Your comment is full of lies

  • Abdulkadir

I trust the intentions of this president and we hope that things will become better as we move through this hard times. “Tough times”, they say, “never last but tough people do”.

  • Truth Justice Equity

What I think that buhari should have done with his sallah speech was to sincerely offer a heartfelt apologies to Nigerian nation and citizens, confess his thoughtless policies ,actions and inactions that have wrecked wrecked untold havoc on Nigeria and then renew his commitments to turn a new leaf ,put forward a clear and unambiguous road map to putting Nigeria on a solid path to recovery and give hope to Nigerians.
As a necessity, buhari must acknowledge his betrayal of the broad based national trust and goodwill that greeted his emergence and swearing in,he must acknowledge his malicious acts of cheating and marginalization of some parts of Nigeria through his myopic statements of 97%+5% ,coupled with his acts of discriminatory appointments.buhari must disband his infantile, myopic, clueless and hollow minded team that have overwhelmed Nigeria with their mediocrity and laziness of the mind ,and appoint intelligent and broad based citizens with high capacities and know how not minding their tribe, religion or political leaning ,to help him pull Nigeria out of the slum where buharis myopic leadership have cast our nation. Buhari must court the friendship, loyalty, love and admiration of all the geological zones of Nigeria through righting the grievous wrongs he has done to some of them by discriminating ,cheating, shortchanging and marginalizing them in his conduct as the President of Nigeria.
If buhari abandons doing the needful and continued with his lamentations, blame games, myopic hallucinations, false promises, lies ,falsehoods and blackmail of Jonathan, he must remember that history will be too harsh on him and his generation for using the grace given to him by God and Nigerians even at his old age ,to undermine, destroy and supervise the demise of Nigerian nation. May God give him the grace to retrace his steps and do the needful before it is too late for him.

    • paul irumundomon

      Arrogance won’t allow him

  • dele20

It is glaring that the mistakes of the past administration are affecting everyday life today

  • dele20

To really be sincere, the present recession we Nigerians are facing is as a result of cumulative effects of economic failure in the past to plan

    • Otile

Countries with bright knowledgeable leaders can always overcome past economic difficulties and lead their nations to prosperity in no time, but countries with dumb clueless leaders like Buhari always attract recession and eventual depression. Watch out, if Imam Mohamed Buhari is still there by this time next year Nigeria will be in hopeless depression with the Naira worthless.

      • Dejandon

And they do so in two years? You must be a dreamer

  • dele20

Since this present administration has gone against corruption, we will surely get the economy right, all we need do is to give our full support to this present administration

    • Otile

Imam has not gone against corruption anything. Has he sacked Dambazua, has he sacked Buratai, did he not assumed the position of Minister of Petroleum himself? Since Imam became the Minister of Petroleum has the petroleum business not gone burst in the Republic? Can you tell how much $s Nigeria has made from oil and gas since Imam Buhari made himself the Oil Minister? Fighting corruption my foot.

      • musa aliyu

Is governance @a standstill? Where your imam sourcing funds to run it?

  • dele20

There should not be be religious discrimination, muslims & Christians should be united like a broom for the betterment of our nation, let us join hands together and uplift Nigeria

    • Otile

Dream on dude. There can be no true unity or lasting peace in your dream of one Nigeria where you join hands with: One Christian, one Mohammedan, one infidel, and live happily forever thereafter. It just doesn’t work that way.

      • dele20

One of low IQ has no insight of believing unity, I do not blame you.

        • Otile

Did you say you have low IQ and you believe in fake unity?

          • dele20

You are the one of low IQ I’m referring to you

          • Otile

Did you say you are the one with low IQ? Good, you are an honest yoruba man.

          • Olatubosun

            He doesn’t have sense

    • Olatubosun

      Yes now

  • paul irumundomon

An American Congress man, called you that you are not an inclusive leader. Your information minister, probably too, don’t know the meaning of that, because people he listens to are just like thr buhari’s. The corruption you are fighting are amongst, those who you have given green light, to be the only few qualified to buy dollars, at 200 naira and sell at 450 in black market. These people are not theives, according to buhari doctrine.

    • musa aliyu

You liar, No one is given dollars @ that rate. In the first place where’s the dollar?

  • emmanuel Azodoh

Please Mr president, can you stop the blaming game and face the facts? I heard give Nigerians vogue promises that the economy will be improved, with all due respect Sir, can I ask you can economy be improve while we are sleep, are telling that we will wake up from this comatose slumber and meet our economy improved, I want to let you understand that each Government had their own problem but they sat and did something even though it might not be too good but is your government doing, the the fund your collecting from looters is depreciating in value

  • Jaspa Matanga

Then resign and continue living in the past.

  • UOU

Buhari is an integral part of the past, here he indicts himself, pure. A classless certificate-less certificate forger. Someone who traded and got all his elevations on falsehood and deceit, shame on all those who supported and supports this sadist complainant..buhari why don’t you file litigation against the past, please?

  • Babrutus

We cannot separate the present from the past but please do not permanently disconnect the present from the future.

  • Olatubosun

My president is working towards a great development

  • Olatubosun

President Mohammed buhari is a patriotic Nigerian

  • Olatubosun

God bless Nigeria and God bless buhari and his cabinets

  • Ayinde

the president has enjoyed his muslim brothers to leave by the dictates of Islam and yet to keep good relationships with their Christian Neighbours.
    Explanation?
Dictates if Islam requires them to subdue, kill Christians and make them to pay the jiza or tax etc. How then do you have a good relationship with such doctrines.

Nigerians please BEWARE and OPEN your Eyes very well
