Minister denies dismissing economic recession as a “word”

Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun
Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun

The Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, on Thursday denied ownership of a social media account that posted controversial updates about Nigeria’s economic recession on Wednesday.

The account, @Mrskemiadeosun on micro-blogging platform, Twitter, played down the significance of a recession after the National Bureau of Statistics announced that Nigeria’s economy contracted by 2.06% in the second quarter, bringing the country into a long predicted recession.

“The strongest of all warriors are these two, time and patience. I know people are concerned about the recession. Recession is a word,” the handle tweeted.

The tweet was later deleted.

Festus Akanbi, spokesman for Mr. Adeosun, told PREMIUM TIMES the account was fake and the statements did not reflect the position of his principal.

“The Twitter handle, @Mrskemiadeosun, does not belong to the Honourable Minister of Finance. At no point did she make that kind of statement in her interaction with the media after the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday. The fake handle does not belong to her,” Mr. Akanbi said.

“There are several other handles circulating on social media including Facebook.”

Mr. Akanbi also said Mrs. Adeosun has no presence on Twitter.

“I can tell you categorically that she doesn’t have a Twitter account,” Mr. Akanbi said.

The comments came after the Peoples Democratic Party condemned the statements and demanded Mrs. Adeosun’s apology.

“Mrs. Kemi Adeosun’s statement yesterday was an out of line & insensitive attempt at signalling. Contrary to her belief, “recession” is not just a word. It’s a horrible reality for millions of Nigerians who face increasing difficulty in putting food on the table & meeting basic everyday financial obligations,” the party had said in a statement.

“Her comments fly against the reality of rising food costs, parents withdrawing children from schools due to fee increments, rising transportation costs, rents & other such everyday expenditure.

“Her comments are an insult to suffering Nigerians & make mockery of the pain we bear as a result of the sheer incompetence & lack of ability of the Muhammadu Buhari administration of which she is an integral part.”

It’s true, recession is a word, however, it’s biting Nigerians very hard. Also, the ruling class should know when people don’t have food to eat, they can eat anything to survive, including very fresh politicians, and Minister of finance is one of them

Mr. Akanbi thinks that world shares his mumuness. Where did the owner of the twitter account get all the photos in which Adeosun is present to publish on the twitter account?

Also, if the account is a fake that is shadowing Adeosun, has she launched any formal complaint to twitters for impersonation? If not, why not? And why was only the offending tweet deleted? These are questions for Adeosun and her mumu spokeman Festus Akanbi to answer.

    • Höly Wähala

…exactly my thoughts, “why was only the offending tweet deleted?” is the cocoa question. A few days before Nigeria lost our Numero Uno economic position to South Africa she also testified before Senators that, “Nigerians have nothing to panic about… Nigeria is still Africa’s largest economy.” The woman is simply out of tune with the reality of suffering and Nigerians, she must be fired before any serious investors will look in our direction… Recall her answer to 16+6? Mchwww!

He is right, admit your failings sometimes, ifele on’emedikwa gi. You jeoigbokwely campaigned and supported a primary school graduate to rule you in 21st century world and expect a Okonjo Iweala type of performance, sorry, you are deep into fallacy

            THANK YOU MY BROTHER.
            Make that; ‘SHE is right’.

Wahala has no scruples. Attempting to run with the hare and hunt with the hounds.

I skipped lashing out on you when you used a moniker two days ago to tongue lash Alhaji Buhari. You are as unstable as water!

          • emmnuel

I recalled the maga praised Alhaji Bingo’s appointee between November 2015 and January 2016 when they came on board

          • Höly Wähala

            Ignored!

          • emmanuel

shameless man. I know you came here to paint Okonjo Iweala good – that we all acknowledge, but you trully campaigned for a dullard to rule Nigeria and he brought in someone just like you dullard to run the office a genius left.
Shamefully, you have changed your moniker to lash at Alhaji Bingo. You only resurrected Wahala yesterday to support NOI. It is so bad that your hope of getting rehabilited by your guys in APC when they win 2015 election has been dashed by a country managed into recession by your super star.
Remain in Germany scrubbing dead bodies and sweeping street for now – recession is a word (Alhaji Buhari/Kemi 16+6)
You smell rotten mango with your Bingo that has killed Nigeria,

          • Höly Wähala

            Monkey…
Dumbo is gone forever, he will end up in prison, go and get a regular job… militancy is a form of criminality. I am in Germany, 1st World; Remain in Nigeria, 3rd world without any hope for your next Bröt as we say here. Jealous monkey, die of hunger you certainly will… Mpama. Ijaw thief. Wetback… go and look for work. Parasite!

          • emmanuel

Hahahaha, everyone who dislike your low life in Germany is Ijaw. Most upwardly mobile Nigerians who sojourned in Germany between the mid nineteen eighties and late nineteen nineties, relocated to other parts of Europe and the USA. The low classed categories have stayed put; because they have nowhere to go. This i know so well.
We all know back home that the Character called Wahala left for Germany in the mid nineteen eighties and cannot afford his ticket back home.
I leave in a third World country why i wished would develop someday, unfortunately a set of clowns who promised to do same have further under developed it and are blaming past leader for their inability to assemble a crack team to deliver on their promises.
Biko, come teach us the modern way to baff dead bodies here. Abi you wan replace Kemi?
Jonathan is history in the leadership of Nigeria, let us-in on the exploits of your failed god – Alhaji Buhari

          • thusspokez

I am in Germany, 1st World; Remain in Nigeria, 3rd world without any hope for your next Bröt as we say here.

If I were you, I wouldn’t feel superior about myself just because I live in the 1st world. After all, the reason you ran away from Nigeria is because you are weak and couldn’t make it in Nigeria. In fact, I would feel inferior to Nigerians who had not abandoned their country but weathering the storm and achieving something despite the hardship.

          • Höly Wähala

Did you read my entire comment to him or just picked what’s biting you? FYI, when I left Nigeria the naira was worth 3dollars and 1:1 with the pound, I am no economic refugee as I came here already a respected researcher with my German professor from the US university I graduated from. Go and jump into a lake with him, my concern is for ordinary Nigerians not idle and envious touts like you two. Punks!

          • thusspokez

left Nigeria the naira was worth 3dollars and 1:1 with the pound,

Gosh! This was in the late 70s, early 80s. when Nigeria was the place to be? You must be in your late sixties or early seventies? I am, therefore flabbergasted that a man your age and “US university” degree could be so often rude to posters and also unintelligible in your comments.

not idle and envious touts like you two. Punks!

Please, don’t take your frustration in Germany on us! It is your problem if you are stuck in a job, e.,g., Security officer [aka night watchman] in Germany or you have too many kids, etc. Go back to Nigeria; it is still not too late to make it!

You don’t want to retire in a cold country with a small pension and persistently worry about heating bills, health, loneliness — the children hardly paying you visits.

          • Höly Wähala

Mumu, a kid who left Nigeria in 1981 for instance is still in his early fifties but… What has age got to do with it? Again, bottom line is, I am capable of buying your entire household, with change to spare!

          • emmanuel

            Akuko!
Where were you the summer? Enough of the noise, your fake German name and i will stalk you with some bad boys before the end of today in Germany.

          • Höly Wähala

From 3rd world? You are sick. Keep stalling but, I reserve the option to ignore a jobless miscreant like you. Hopeless, lost case.

          • emmanuel

Check the cost o a MacBook Air with 9 and half hours battery life from where i taunt you. funny enough jet2, Ryan Air or Airlingus ticket around Europe for vacation are usually cheaper than Lagos- Abuja, Calabar, yet you cannot enjoy life. I begi, you are not worth engaging.

          • Höly Wähala

            Ignored!

          • emmanuel

Hahahaha, weaklings do not leave in Nigeria. Even the woman wen dey here don send you into oblivion. Na you you start trouble for here.
We discuss issues as it affect Nigeria here and not people. Only those who make life difficult for us are x-rayed in public lenses so they can change.
Do not come here again to do critic when you ahev not repented from carry Alhaji Buhari shoulder high in days past.
For you to criticise him or Kemi, you must pay restitution to the Nigerians you misled! At least two bags of Rice to replace the one a Nigeria at Satelite town in Lagos carried yesterday, when he left two youngsters already hynotised, by pretending he was their father and would return with cash – Na hunger when your baba cause be dat!

          • thusspokez

a kid who left Nigeria in 1981 for instance is still in his early fifties but…

But you weren’t a kid then because, according to you, you already had a US university degree — unless you were a child genius who got his US degree in his teens.

What has age got to do with it?

            Did I touch a nerve?

I am capable of buying your entire household, with change to spare!

But you don’t know the size of my household. How can you tell whether you can afford it or not?

          • Höly Wähala

Your problem is simple comprehension, I also asked you to read through my entire exchanges with @emmanuel. Do you get US university degree in Nigeria before leaving Nigeria? Again, you lack the intellect necessary for mature discourse, go to proper school punk. Simply ask me how old I am instead of beating about the bush, monkey!

          • emmanuel

Wahala you recently entered your early fifties.

          • Höly Wähala

            Ignored! Monkey…

          • emmanuel

I had told you to offer solution to Nigeria problem, but you decided to continue.
What is the way forward for Nigeria oga reseacher? Readers in this forum may already be bored of your tantrums.
            back to issues, nor run

          • thusspokez

            Your problem is simple comprehension

On the contrary — maybe even too much comprehension on my part.

But bare with me as I further dissect your replies. You implied that you left Nigeria for Germany in the late 1970s, early 80s — which coincided with the period that the Naira was 1:1 to pound sterling.

For the sake of argument, let’s agree that you graduated with a US university degree and returned to Nigeria prior to leaving for Germany. Are you now saying that you were a kid when you left Nigeria to commence your studies in a US university?

There was (and still is) far less racism and more research opportunities in the US for an African graduate than in Germany. In addition, for a researcher, you would be required to be proficient in Germany — meaning that, you would need to first learn the language.

So given all these obstacles, why did you not stay in the US, but instead went to Germany to be a researcher? Seriously, I can imagine your Pinocchio nose growing longer every time you make up more stories

          • Höly Wähala

For the sake of informed and intelligent readers. First, when did IBB devalue the naira… late 70’s or mid 80’s? Must I return to Nigeria to leave for Germany… and must I live in Germany to learn German? I guess you’ve never heard of Goethe Institute on Ozumba Mbadiwe Str. for Lagos abi? Finally, have you ever heard of German police shooting any blacks or even foreigners to death? Like I’ve said, you are very shallow for me to keep up this discussion, believe what you please but, no more watering stones with you. You are an imbecile!

          • emmanuel

Guy, i have tax identification number here, i pay external auditors, tax consultants, remit pension for my staff, pay NSITF onctributions and relevant taxes.

Lets get back to the issue – recession. Researcher what strategies are you offering to get us out of the woods?
E be as e get, yet Alhaji Buhari seem not to have any plan or solution other than Nigeria Ariforce bomb Boko Haram Leaders and Jonathan offered waiver at night.

          • Höly Wähala

First, buy yourself Agege bread and geisha for lunch before marketing your stupidity as grandstanding. I’m not impressed. Sufferhead, can you afford a dollar even at official rate?

          • emmanuel

            lwkm.
i got you there. By the way, i neva eat agege bread for a while – i will do with Suya later. I recall my room mate in school eat one luxurious loaf of Agege and three Geisha without water in the days you ran away from Nigeria.
We no longer eat Agege with Geisha, it is either with Agoyin ewa, Suya or beans or with fried fish, depending on what part of the country.
            Stale guy!

        • share Idea

I support your assertion with regards to people expecting wonders from clueless leader…

I will repeat again for posterity, no matter how good anybody is, if that person works under Buhari, the person will still output negative result.

What Nigerians fail to realise, is that people working under Buhari, can only operate based on the environment provided by Buhari. It is like playing Messi, Ronaldo against Nigerian villa team on a muddy pitch. People that did not know those people (Ronaldo & Messi) will class them as village champions, while people that know their skills and strength will be levid with anger of what the playing environment have done to them.

During, GEJ, people that worked under him were given opportunity to apply their skills, and that results in several landmark achievements recorded by the team. Contrast with current administration, where people will first seek for the President Body Language before implementation a legitimate task.

  • emmanuel

Tinubu is a wicked man who nominated a lady only good for warming a mans bed for the job of intelligent women and men. Kemi has never made any strategic statement or comment since she assumed that office.
The lame duck led the blank brain in Aso Villa in a fanfare to China to go sign away Nigeria in a fake currency swop deal packaged by street boys and she returned back singing hymns of her the trip was a success.
Do you know, that Kemi does not even know how to apply pancake? how can such a woman not say recession is a word?
One who cannot add 16+6, has no brain for critical reasoning, the purpose for studying Arithmetics.
Her dullard spoke person has spoilt the case after deleting the post. they should have left it, then deny.

  • UOU

I pity this poor woman and I will defend her to any level because women are the most vulnerable especially in politics, globally. Most times we just condemn them without giving them chance to defend themselves even when the circumstances is beyond their comprehension. It is wicked of those who threw up kemi, on this position which far outweighs her capabilities, in all ramifications, I wont blame the poor girl at all. For me, the intent of those evil group headed by obasanjo/ amosun/tinubu, is to kill the political future of this woman which is still on infantry, unfortunately, kemi is held hostage by loyalty and incompetence. Onw wonders why they did not assign a smaller ministry like youth and sports or women to her, instead of this hefty portfolio..certainly this is an unmistaken, ibu nyiri danda

    • Suleiman

But your have been quick to blame Ngozi Iweala, haven’t you? Or is she a man? Hypocrite! Who told you she or Tinubu did not lobby for her? Didn’t her state protest her appointment?
