President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed the Ooni of Ife, Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi Ojaja ll, as the Chancellor of University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

A statement by the Director of Media, Ooni’s Palace, Moses Olafare, said the president made the appointment on Thursday.

“This appointment would develop further and enable the monarch to build more bridges of friendship most especially across the Niger,” he said.

Mr. Olafare commended President Buhari for recognising the Ooni’s efforts in promoting peace, unity among Nigerians.

He noted that Ogunwusi was ready to bring to bear his influence and connections to promote unity and harmonious working relationships in the university.

He further admonished Nigerians to promote issues that could foster unity to ensure speedy development rather than playing up their differences.

” It is incontrovertible today that Ooni Ogunwusi is a bridge builder and being the youngest chancellor appointed for the only university bearing ‘Nigeria’ is worth the celebration,” he said.

“His appointment as chancellor, University Of Nigeria, Nsukka is considered as a positive sign that can further enhance peaceful coexistence of our dear nation.”

Mr. Olafare disclosed that the appointment letter which was signed by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, on behalf of the president, stated that the Ooni was chosen based on his wealth of experience and his capacity to manage men and resources.

The sooner Nigeria emulated civilized countries by doing things based on merit, the better. Chancellor of a University should have at a minimum a PhD and a wealth of experience in education vertical.

    • Maria

Hahahahahahahahahaha! The article did not say Vice Chancellor! Chancellor is a political appointment…you dont even need to have any degree…mumu.

      • share Idea

You don’t even need to have any degree – he we go again, just like your type urged Buhari to contest election with NEPA bill and the effect is being experienced by all. Nigeria we hail thee

        • Maria

“he we go again”… Mr degree! When did having PhD and degrees become the requirements for becoming chancellors? Common… you guys sound like illiterates.

          • AFRICANER

In civilized countries, where education is taken seriously, and such posts based on merit.

How can a Vice-Chancellor be more qualified than a Chancellor? Only in the land of goons.

The entire system, when it comes to education, the institution itself, should have no place for political appointments.

If you want to play politics with appointments do it with your village chief!

          • mo

If ex president dumbo had appointed shekau your new partner, you wont post all these bullshit. Get on with your ogogoro you hypocrites.

          • tundemash

U claimed “”University chancellors act as chief executives of an individual campus or university system and need a broad set of skills in addition to experience in the educational field. The path to this career can be highly variable, as the selection process is not consistent between educational institutions and neither are the requirements for the job. Generally, a person who wants to become a university chancellor should plan on getting a PhD in education or a related field, along with acquiring business skills, possibly through a master’s in business administration (MBA) program.”

Mr. Career Liar, that is the United States. In Nigeria, the V.C is the chief executives unlike US. so the earlier you eat your sour grapes quietly the better instead of you displaying amazing ignorance online. And by the way, how many PhD chancellors did Dumbo Jo appoint ?

How to become chancellor of Oxford University

Anybody can stand to be chancellor of Oxford University providing they obtain nominations from 50 members of convocation. That is, former students who obtained a degree (other than an honorary degree), or existing or former members of congregation – the university’s legislative body, comprising of 3,600 academic and administrative staff.

Other than the written consent of the candidate, there are no formal requirements. The chancellor does not need to be British, a graduate of Oxford, or even a graduate.

Elections take place at Convocation House in term-time over two days, one of which must be a Saturday. All members of convocation are entitled to vote but must do so in person. Their names will be checked off against a register of all university members. The date of the election is to be decided by the 26-member university council, the main policy-making body.

You are taking this too far. This is a Nigerian University and not UKs. Governed by different laws. If you quote that of UI in comparison with UNN. It will make sense. You are not making any sense by crossing the ocean to give us something strange.

          • Julius

            Gbam !!

          • Julius

Lmaoooooooooo, sista Maria, they are illiterates. Thats why they question other folks educational level all the time.Go to Umuahia market, you will see a man that cant even spell his name with a Bsc, HND and PHD certs hanging on his wall with his name on it. They are too funny.

          • olugbode

exactly, Maria. It is obvious that some of these people are semi-illiterates that post as know it all.

Buhari is busy wasting his time. Nothing he does can stop the Southeasterners.

        Igbos are simply yawning.

When Buhari is done, and gone, all these things he’s doing will last at the most 20 years; cream will still rise to the top.

Instead of building monuments that will outlast him, bring Nigeria into the 21st Century, construct structures that could be seen from outer space, train engineers, mathematicians, Physicians, etc, Buhari is busy trying to artificially marginalize the Igbos, bring in alien tribal “kings” to oversee tertiary institutions in Igboland, and subdue opposition political parties; meanwhile he is as lanky as a skeleton, and showing his mortality weekly. What a waste!

        • PolyGon2013

UNN is a federal university. It is not an Igbo hospital.

        • JayM

How many such monuments did GEJ construct

        • Bakanridi

they were the first that marginalized themselves with their myopic thinking by putting all their eggs in one basket. The RECOGNIZED LEADER of all Igbo race His Excellency Dr Rochas Okorocha has said it all. It is either they wake up from their slumber and accept reality or they should continue with their day dreaming and wishful thinking of actualizing a pipe dream. LONG LIVE KABIYESI of ALL.

          • Julius

I honestly wish Governor OKorocha the best. He will go as far as he want in the political space in Nigeria. I will campaign and vote for him in a second when the time comes.

        • Opeyemi

This has been the way in Nigeria for a long time. I think the Dein of Agbor is the Chancellor of University of Ilorin. The Etsu of Nupe is the chancellor at OAU, Sultan Abubakar is the same for Uni-Ibadan, Igwe Alfred Achebe (of Onitsha) is the Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University. In enlightened circles, these interactions help to strengthen national ties and expand the influence and networking horizons of the institution. Obi of Obinugwu serves as chancellor for University of Birnin Kebbi and to their credit, I have not heard of any protests by the people because a fellow Nigerian has been asked to serve in such capacity.

          • george

All those you mentioned are human not this rat they ooni

          • Fasco

George, George, George, how many times did I call u, 3x, hmmmmm! you called Ooni of Ife ‘RAT’, have u forgotten that only GOD crowns. You have gone too far! No sane Nigerian be it Yoruba, Hausa, Nupe, Ijaw, Itsekhiri, not even an Agbor man will describe Obi of Onitsha as rat. Pls be sane for once.

      • Julius

lolz. He didnt know that. these are the folks calling other people semi-literate. Thats their life in display. Next, he will be correcting online grammar. Sad !

      • So oju abe niko

Maria, you are absolutely right here. With respect to Nigeria, below is part of my response to someone else.
“And by the way, Chancellor is only ceremonial post – it has virtually no power. It is traditional to choose someone from another region outside the University location as a chancellor. For instance the current chancellor of ABU is Obi of Onitsha and Etsu Nupe is the chancellor of OAU. The most powerful person in the University is the Pro-chancellor, an outsider appointed by government. He is the Chairman of the governing council. In other words, PC is the board chairman with the final say, while the VC is the CEO.”

    • tundemash

Mor0n, i thot you said two days, you already gave up on Nigeria and Nigerians ?

      • Julius

hahahahaha, stop killing that loser bastard. You know he lack the capacity to reason. its a total waste of your precious time on an Irrelevant moron.

      • delta K

Yoruba Moslem like you calling Christian terrorists, wonders on earth, All terrorists are Moslem like you

        • tundemash

Creek rat, all that religious antics and propaganda failed you pre-election and you are still on it. What brand do you smoke ?

          • delta K

You still talking about election, face facts, Moslem like you are terrorists all over the world

          • tundemash

Mor0n, you ought to have told your new Chairman,Alhaji Boko Haram Mode Sheriff that . Did you also bother to tell your brother Mujahideen Asari Dokubo that ?
Religion is is the opium of the poor , keep getting high on it .

  • Isi Agwo

“…the monarch would officially assume office on the 20th of February, 2016.” Slow down, illiterates at work. February 20, a Saturday, is the monarch’s start date? Just shows the amount of strategic reasoning, or lack of, that gets into daft, certificate forger, Bokohari’s thinking. Haphazard decision-making is the hallmark of Bokoharic illiteracy on steroids.

    • Sparzo

? de f are you on about?

    • mo

      A typical biafraudian spewing garbage.

    • Bakanridi

Another plus and crown for the Yoruba race. keep it up the Custodian of all Omo O’dua. You have shown that you deserve whatever appointment in Nigeria.

  • Arogbo

Congratulations to the Ooni on his appointment as the Chancellor of UNN. The Ooni status as a first class Oba has a commanding presense, he’s more than qualify to be tbe Chancellor of University of Nigeria.

  • Your Biodun

Nigeria needs to relocate UNN to any other part of the country..Biko..No more in the SE(land of saboteurs)..

    • Uwadiegwu

Hear a Yo-robber man talking about “saboteurs” but it will be nice to remind this rat that UNN is an Eastern Region idea, built with Eastern Region money.

      • Julius

Built with Eastern region money ? You people need history lesson . There must be an elder somewhere in Ibo land that can tell the truth. Somebody need to tell you people the truth. Its so sad that you lack a truth teller in your mix. God help you all !

        • So oju abe niko

Don’t want to get in the middle of any ethnic war, but it is true that UNN was built by Eastern region. ABU, UNN and OAU were built by Northern, Eastern and Western region respectively, before FG took over those universities. Only 2 universities of the first 5 (Ibadan and Lagos) began as FG universities.

          • Julius

Then, why do you think the Federal Government is having a say in who to appoint or not to appoint ? Why is the Federal government spending our collective money on those Universities ?

          • So oju abe niko

Julius, they are no longer regional universities. I just gave you the background on the beginning, but the federal government took control of those universities since the 70s.

And by the way, Chancellor is only ceremonial post – it has virtually no power. In other words, PC is the board chairman with the final say, while the VC is the CEO.

          • Julius

Ceremonial post appointed by the Federal Government. I knew when they took over, hence they are no longer regional. That was the point I was trying to make. Respect.

  • Reason-ability

PMB the Strategist. Integration whether the SEasterners like it or not. One Nigeria and all that and the appointment of a young dynamic Oba who has made reconciliation a mission is jut brilliant. Will the SEasterners applaud this? I doubt but may reason prevail.

    • Julius

Nope, they will soon be calling him semi-literate. You know they are the most educated human being on the planet, so they claim ! Poor Oba, I would have refused the appointment. They will be abusing him, its what uncultured people do.

      • Reason-ability

I hear you and know that you are right but optimism is my middle name.

        • Julius

Good luck with them bro !. I gave up on them long time ago.

      • olugbode

@Julius, good leaders do not worry about insults and critics, they usually have their eyes set on their goals. President Obama was called a liar among many insults, Dr. Martin Luther king was criticized by our folks during his days, etc. This is why leaders are different from followers. If our dear Kabiyesi gets approval of everybody later on, then he must have been doing something wrong. Even Moses’ brother, Aaron did not support him at some point in the bible. We just need to keep praying for our leaders for more grace from above to carry the burdens of their people.
