Nigerian activists ask Buhari’s ministers to publicly declare assets

One of Nigeria’s foremost anti-corruption coalitions, the Civil Society Network Against Corruption (CSNAC), has challenged all the 36 ministers in President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet, to publicly declare their assets in the light of the ongoing war against corruption

In a statement Sunday, the coalition said through its chairman, Olanrewaju Suraju, that by publicly declaring their assets, the ministers would be demonstrating their readiness to complement the president’s zero tolerance for corruption and promise  of  a transparent government.

According to CSNAC, President Buhari and his vice, Yemi Osinbajo, “have laid a good precedence by keeping in line with Section 140 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), by declaring their assets publicly.

“This was also in fulfilment of their campaign promise of running a transparent government as well as eradicating corruption in the country.

“Public declaration of assets usually aids the assessment of public officers and will help in monitoring of public office holders and ultimately reveal those who corruptly enriched themselves while in office, paving way for proper punishment and sanctions against them.

“As public officers it is expected that the ministers should also declare their assets in line with this administration’s quest to run a transparent and corrupt free government. With the President and his Vice having shown a great example by declaring their assets, the ministers should also follow suit without further delay. The President, in his ‘my covenant with Nigerians’, promised to ‘encourage’ his ministers to publicly declare their assets. The President is hereby reminded of his promise and called to act appropriately.

“CSNAC therefore calls on all ministers to publicly declare their assets as a matter of priority. By so doing, they will have shown their readiness to complement the President’s zero tolerance for corruption and promise in the actualisation of a transparent and corrupt free Nigeria.”

Lol! The likes of Amaechi, Ngige, Dambazau, etc should declare their billions? Hahahaha! NEVER! If they do, their e-slaves will Sh*t in their pants! The only ‘public declaration’ the ministers can attempt will be the PMB-Osinbajo type; INCONCLUSIVE DECLARATION!
With the type of hypocrisy displayed by Nigerians and so called civil society groups, I can see that country is stuck in the doldrums. WHAT IS CSNAC TALKING ABOUT?? HAVE BUHARI AND OSINBAJO DECLARED THEIR ASSETS PUBLICLY??
    I LAUGH!
Can any sane mind in all honesty refer to that INCOMPLETE (INCONCLUSIVE?) ‘LIST ‘ reeled out by their aides as a PUBLIC DECLARATION OF ASSETS??
We all saw yaradua’s own..he published the ACTUAL forms he submitted to the CCB, DETAILING his assets and worth and those of his wife and children!
    WHERE IS BUHARI’S OWN??
We all watched what happened when Premium Times man Ibanga Isine fired ‘mai gaskiya’ the question on WHEN he will release a FULL declaration of his assets. ‘mai gaskiya’ BLANKED-OUT…AND STARTED STUTTERING! Then proceeded on a windy story of how he had ‘declared’ four(4) times in the past! WHAT IS THAT??
When genuine democrats like myself raise these questions, we are called unprintable names by the APC e-zombies. SO WHY DONT THESE HYPOCRITES ABUSE IBANGA FOR ASKING SAME??
I laugh! I DEY LAUGH OOO!!
    NONSENSE!

I suspect they trust Ibanga Isine’s motive and they doubt yours.

      • B. Messi

And what could be your motive for ‘suspecting’ on their behalf..aside from being one of them?
In which case, could you also ‘suspect’ why the e-hypocrites are satisfied with an INCONCLUSIVE ‘public declaration’?

        • citizenka

LOL OK I like your answer.

It is either something is seriously wrong with these activists or something is very very wrong with Nigerians or both. If not why are these so-called activists calling for declaration of assets? Did VP Mr Osinbajo not declare personal assets in cash of about N95m and then foreign currency cash of $950,000 (Approximately $1m)? The pertinent question is: What did the so-called activists or Nigerians do about it? Everybody accepted the declaration. Some even praised him for declaring his assets and that was it. Everyone kept mute. Not one single Nigerian wondered how an unknown lawyer like Osinbajo who 98% of Nigerians never knew acquired a total cash in excess of N300m in his personal account.

But asset declaration by public officers is far much more than just stating your assets. You must be able to explain and show documented and verifiable evidnce of how you made your money and source of income over time…and these evidence must confirm and match the assets within the period. This is how assets verification is done elsewhere. Do we now need to hire experts to teach us this? Do we need to send people abroad to learn asset verification?

    CONCLUSION
VP the source of income is questionable, suspicious and highly contestable. I personally believe he will be unable to present bank statements to prove his income from legitimate business that yielded such cash.
