A total of 52 repentant Boko Haram members are undergoing deradicalisation in Gombe, the coordinator of Operation Safe Corridor, Bamidele Shafa, a Maj.-Gen., has said.

Mr. Shafa told journalists on Saturday in Gombe that the ex-Boko Haram members would undergo the programme for 16 weeks, during which they would be rehabilitated and subsequently reintegrated into the larger society.

He said, during their stay in camp, they would go through a well planned training including psycho-social therapy by various Federal Government agencies.

The coordinator added that former terrorists would undergo training on citizenship, to make them responsible citizens.

According to him, they will also be exposed to different types of vocational skills such as carpentry, welding, barbing, among others by the National Directorate of Employment.

He said the reformed boko haram members would receive grants to set up businesses in their various communities.

Mr. Shafa said his agency would trace the families of the repentant Boko Haram members, to ease their return home after the training.

The coordinator, who addressed the ex boko haram members, advised them to make use of the opportunity to free themselves of hatred and warped beliefs, so as to live peacefully in their communities.

“We will try everything humanly possible to make your stay in the camp comfortable,” he assured them.

Responding, Sale Muhammadu, one of the repentant militants, commended the Federal Government for accepting them in spite of the atrocities they committed.

He promised that they would avail themselves of the opportunity to become responsible citizens. (NAN)

Deradicalization with tax payers money right? They are supposed to be serving life imprisonment or on death row, why are we wasting time since it’s confirmed that they are terrorist. You see why I now believe that this country is a zoo, you can’t change their ideologies in 2000 years

    • Alhaji

They cannot go to prison or be executed because they are Buhari’s boys who installed him, That is why he went to the World Bank and borrowed $2.2billions to compensate them. I know God is watching. The blood of Christians they killed will not be shed in vain as long as God lives.

Utangirma Allah. The wine remembers, devout Muslims will never abandon their own. There is jubilation throughout Islamic world today because 52 plus jihadists are reintegrated into Northern Nigerian folk. These young devout Muslims will be well cared for, given huge money, some recruited into Buhari’s Nigerian army, police and intelligence agencies. And soon they will start curing Nigerian army of Christian soldiers. Nigerian soldiers will once again start to lose men and materials. Beelzebub, you know how to provide for your Muslim people.

Lol wanders shall never end, I love fictions books, this concept will make a good reading.

Deradicalisation and then reintegration into society??? So that’s it? No punishment for years of murder, rape and destruction? No matter how repentant or sorry they are their crimes call for punishment.

    • Dan arewa

I think is bad idea to intergrate them into the society but they said they studied the Rwanda genocide rehabilitation and are using that model which actually worked in Rwanda to replicate the same here in the northeast due to the similarities of the situation. I still think it’s very dangerous approach.

      • Sara Marie Brown

Whether it is successful or works is still irrelevant. You are talking about 10’s of thousands of people butchered. Thousands of women and young girls stolen away, raped, imprenated, sold into slavery. Entire villages burnt to the ground. Etc. No matter how repentant they are or even if they become model citizens and never commit another crime they still must face justice and be punished for what they’ve done.

      • Alhaji

Are Rwandans muslims? If they are not, what makes them think the same system will work with muslims? It will only work if there is no koran

    • Alhaji

They cannot be punished. They are northern muslims.

      • Sara Marie Brown

        Non sequitur

  • Daniel

You can deradicalize them but just treat people they displaced as well as you are treating them.

  • Alhaji

Who will pay for the program? Will Ango Abdullahi and Buhari use their personal money to run the program?
