Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Thursday shocked passengers at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Lagos, by flying the economy class aboard a commercial airline to a function in Enugu.

Mr. Obasanjo was billed to attend the South-East Economic and Security Summit‎, but could not secure a business class ticket because all seats had been booked, his aides told PREMIUM TIMES.

The former president confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES, but did not give details.

His aides said with no alternative, the former president bought an economy ticket of Air Peace airline that travelled out of Lagos at 7a.m.

The ticket was the last for the flight, as a result Mr. Obasanjo could not travel with his security detail.

On board the aircraft, some shocked business class passengers offered the former president their seats, and he turned them down.

Mr. Obasanjo took his seat number 18A, not before taking photographs with some passengers.

On arrival at Enugu airport, he was received by Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

  • Professor O.O.C

    DEAR EDITOR,

A parvenu billionaire pretending to modesty is unfunny. General Olusegun Obasanjo flatters to deceive.
He is not only part and parcel of the leadership rot in Nigeria but also the superintendent of corruption.
General Obasanjo never had anything to offer but in a country of the blind he wore false robes everyday.
Almost everything that went awry in terms of corruptive theft of oil blocs by stealth had Obasanjo’s assent.
Such a crooked fellow with threadbare understanding of public affairs should never have been a president.

    • Dejandon

Bette pray to be half as relevant to your world as Obasanjo is. The man obviously have something that many around the world seek after, else don’t you wonder why he is constantly being called upon home and abroad

      • princegab

The prof comment was the truth and yours is not a rebuttal. Obj could be bought and sold hence the demand for him. The state of the nation is the proof, sir.

        • VERITAS_ the rock of ages_

Good Answer. dont mind him. he is one of those obj Goons that others praising Obj catches his attention and he decides to sell the OBJ lies to us too. But unfortunately for him we went to school and cant be fooled

          • Omoba1

Can’t be fooled about what. We need Obasanjo in this country. If he means nothing to you, he certainly means a lot to others (internationally and domestically). The man understands Nigeria better than us.

I was very critical of him, not till I had an open mind and did some research about him – you better do so

          • VERITAS_ the rock of ages_

cant be fooled by his false robes. his lies, his deceit and mostly his so called love for Nigeria. You may need him but i dont need him or anyone from his Generation. Neither does Nigeria need someone who picks who will become our president down to Local govt chairman. He should take an example from the Bush family and go sit at home and leave us alone to choose who’s best for our country.

          • Omoba1

You can certainly tell that to those who still run to him for advice. We do not neglect the wisdom of the sage and Obasanjo is one.

My prayer is to be a quarter as influential as Obasanjo so I can positively change Africa. Hating him does me no good. I quit that a long time.

          • VERITAS_ the rock of ages_

i dont hate him. he is inconsequential to me and my life. I just dont see the need for his outburst against our elected officials which he once was and i didnt see any future altering good from his ere, so we the voters he is indirectly calling fools by attacking governments he orchestrated their rise to power. His actions impact on the lives of millions, good for a very few and bad for most and the most in a bad situation are now the chaos in my own life. I spend over 600k a month just solving problems of people i dont know because the chaos the likes of Obj have brought upon us. My own expenses per month isnt up to 20% of what i give out. Its a burden. But my nature of helping is about to disappear because i am in Nigeria. …

      • Omoba1

        This comment is bulls eye

    • VERITAS_ the rock of ages_

Thats the truth. The Good comment. I dont even know why he still makes the news. More powerful men (George W Bush, Blair etc) just finish tenure and leave their countries to the Next Guy. This one always wants to be in media or out there wearing his false robes. Makes you wonder what he has to hide this one he is always wanting to control every president after him? Now he flies Economy and its a media frenzy. I guess most missed the part of the story where he requested 1st class ticket but they were all booked. he’s wearing more false robes on his previous false robe.

  • bootypoppin

Nigerians have been bitter since the time of Lord Lugard. Chai. Omo

  • otunga

At Obj’s age to still be highly functional and influential is a blessing…guys, don’t hate the player, hate the game!

Humility lesson for our politicians and so called big men.

  • JasV

It shows how planless some of these so called leaders can be. If you and your aides could not plan for simple things like traveling to IPOB infested area any wonder why you could not plan for the future of the country?

    • VERITAS_ the rock of ages_

Thank you. That’s the truth, the only truth. God bless you for the best comment here. Tho Maybe in 1000 years if you are still alive you probably would have written it this way “”””It shows how planless some of these so called leaders can be. If you and your aides could not plan for simple things like traveling, any wonder why you could not plan for the future of the country?. I just find it funny that Nigerians carry their tribe above reality itself. I ask, what has any Nigerian tribe contributed to the development of man kind from 1,000,000,000 B.c till 1945? So i find it rather insulting to the Consequential peaceful tribes that built everything the Hausa, Fulani, Yoruba, Igbo, tiv, idoma, Kanuri, Nupe, Etc Nigerian tribes use as life today (Education, Economic, employment, Energy, Universities, Television, Internet, SmartPhones, Keyboard, Modems, Software etc) Thank Goodness white people found knowledge before the black man. Imagine in 2016 Nigerians are still measuring life superiority based on Tribes, murdering each other based on tribe, support injustice based on tribe. Nigeria would be a failed state if all Nigerians dont Evolve.

    • TRUSTIN BRIGHT

Are you this negative. May be you even believe yourself to be superhuman. Only empty drums make noise.

  • Sam

Atleast Baba will also eat Puff Puff and enjoy a non-digital safety demonstrations by the air hostesses.

    • VERITAS_ the rock of ages_

lol @ non-digital safety demonstrations by the air hostesses.

  • Lakeside

Can someone tell me the deal for Nigerian former presidents regarding flying please? What are some of the planes in the presidential fleet for? Past presidents should be allowed to make use of some of them.

    • VERITAS_ the rock of ages_

That’s for real. Lets not forget that some of these men know Nigeria’s top-most secrets as the president. so their security should be paramount.

    • Artful ºDodger

Yea, and tomorrow when you hear a budget of a billion naira for the presidential fleet you shout blue banana. The presidential fleet is based in Abuja and would have cost so much to bring one to wait for Obasanjo in Lagos to take him to Enugu.

  • A Aminu

A former Nigerian president or a former president of any country is not one of those to be described as people who will ride as an attachment on a luxurious bus. OBJ as a former president is by no means an ordinary Nigerian, who flies economy class meant for ordinary people, that is what makes it news. Humility lesson for our larger than life politicians..

    • VERITAS_ the rock of ages_

Humility? LOOOL… Did you read the story properly? do you remember he wanted to buy a 1st class ticket but fortunately for him they were all booked and then he used the opportunity to get some PR for flying Economy. Anyway at His age he should be able to plan His trip and shame on his Aide’s also for their incompetence.

      • Omoba1

There is no first class ticket for local flights. He didn’t fly on a private jet, a feat that a lots of big men would have given him without taking a dime. He flew commercial and was not bothered about seat preferences even when some business class passengers offered their seats to him, again for free

        • VERITAS_ the rock of ages_

1st class, business class whats the difference? anyway did they not write he wanted but couldnt get a business class ticket?

          • Omoba1

If you review the story properly, you would notice that it appears Baba was paying from his pocket. If he wasn’t, the organizers would have made adequate itinerary plans for him and his aides. Nevertheless, he appears unperturbed about the circumstances and decided to travel with what is available.

Cut the man some slack, this is very unafrican especially with the bigmanism in Africa

          • VERITAS_ the rock of ages_

He wanted a business class ticket, he didnt get one, he had to be there in the SE for the summit because its good Pr for him, he took economy and when he saw peoples reactions he played the role you are buying now and here we are, giving him audience. simple Political logic and thats it. Politics? its a very simple game to play. And it doesnt matter from which pocket it was paid. sure Nigeria can Afford to pay 60K for its Ex-Presidente to fly for a summit within Nigeria.

  • tuby NY

Lol. Baba is “my distance correct man anyday pls! And it’s a blessing in itself to be as active as him like a 50yrs old at his close to 80yrs age. And to even go on that flight (in economy class with his status?) without his aids and security details? Commendable. Baba na correct man pls.. and I’ve always admired him, his style, his WISE counsel n deep knowledge regarding everything Nigeria yo.

    • Julius

Indeed and knowing him, he was probably cracking jokes with the other passengers.

      • Omoba1

True word. A rare privilege for the air passengers to ask him vital questions and he surely answers

        • Julius

Yes oo and if he doesn’t want to answer your question, he will tell you a story that by the time he is done, you will forget your own question. lolz God bless him !!

  • Artful ºDodger

Did he eventually arrive in Enugu, yes he did saving himself some money in the process.

  • David Adeniran

The recession is real then! Lol!

    • Julius

No, its not. Read the piece again, it said the Business class was sold out !!!!, lolz.

  • The oneNigeria

Obj is the only Nigerian politician with brain . Hate him or love he has got guts .

    • Omoba1

Obj is the only president Nigeria has had, others are counterfeit

  • MI

Change begins with me…. Obj for you.

  • Focus

    Is this news?

    • PolyGon2013

Yes. He was offered the business class out of respect from the passengers, and by turning it down, he earned more respect.

  • Wale Allen

That’s what PMB promised Nigerians before he was elected. He promised he would be flying public airlines. Anyway, OBJ is always real.

  • Mohammed A Y

Theres’ nothing special travelling economy class by the former president.
Its the last alternave flight available , otherwise he miss his function.
