Slaughter cows roaming Abuja’s streets, Melaye tells Minister

The senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, on Monday asked the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mohammed Bello, to order pastoralists out of Nigeria’s capital city of Abuja.

Mr. Melaye made the call when the minister testified before the Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory. The committee is chaired by Mr. Melaye.

Mr. Melaye reminded Mr. Bello that an earlier directive issued against the activities of herdsmen within the city had been ignored and a drastic action must be taken to end the menace.

“Honourable Minister, Senate as an institution is not happy at how Fulani herdsmen continue to move their cows across the city centre, which we are aware you have given directive against that some time ago,” Mr. Melaye said.

Mr. Melaye said Mr. Bello should direct municipal workers to move about with tools to either slaughter cows or seize them and place heavy fines on their owners.

“From now, get knives and ask your men to slaughter cows found in the capital city or prosecute herdsmen seen with cows in the city centre with a fine of N50, 000 per cow. This order must be carried out,” Mr. Melaye said.

Concerns have continued to mount about the activities of herdsmen across the FCT in recent months, as cows could be seen wandering around the city center, causing traffic gridlock and sometimes accidents.

City residents called on the Nigerian government to proffer solutions to the menace.

The minister will not implement the directive, it’s just a waste of time. That’s what you get when a government places more emphasis on cows and their wellbeing compared to humans it was elected to serve.

  • Rommel

This is the only sensible thing that would stop the menace across the country, capture and fine then failure to pay within a stipulated period would lead to auctioning of the ruminants

This will make a lot of sense, because ever since this new govt took over its like d fulanis were emboldened to come into the capital and roam with their cows pls minister do something it’s very embarrassing. I flew in from kuwait with some potential investors and on our way to their hotel in Wuse 2 we saw cow crossing d streets! Created traffic. That was very embarrassing they made jokes about it till today they always poke me about it and laugh

Fulani cows have been roaming the streets of Abuja since its creation, don’t give us the bullshit that the coming of PMB embolden them. As your archaic story of coming into Abuja with “some potential investors”, and your embarrassment, tell that to the marines as nobody witnessed that.
Though I don’t support domestic animals moving around the city, sentiments shouldn’t be use in every comments just because of the hatred some people has for the present government.

If nobody cares as you said why are you so dumb to reply something you don’t care about! Wawa kawai. It’s not sentiment, it’s the truth! Buhari and his dumb adamawa born Fulani minister have allowed this to fester. Mumu maybe u don’t stay in abuja! Obviously typing from the creeks u r staying! Olodo

    dead men walking…

If Fulani herdsmen can boldly continue to move their cows across Abuja city centre, even down to the international airport boarding/arrival arena, the world can now see what rural villages and farmers are facing – unchallengable Fulani herdsmen. ABOVE THE LAW?

  • JasV

This rogue. If you find out now, he is waiting to corner the contract for slaughtering stolen cows in Abuja. omo ale

  • Don Corleone

before you castigate him why not take a minute and ask yourself if there’s any sense in what the man has said…in passing judgement ,that’s if you even have the right to pass, its always better when you’re objective and not sentimental..

    Well said Senator Melaye.
Instead of crying like babies, other states, especially in the south and middle belt should adopt similar measures. Buhari or any Fulani leader cannot be depended upon to take any action against their own cows. Buhari and the Fulani cow owners would even consider the center of Abuja Grazing Zones if no one takes and action.

Each state house of assembly should pass laws similar to what the senator has stated. Ekiti had taken the lead, thanks to their pragmatic governor (hopefully, the future president of Nigeria). Ekiti should strengthen its laws to include fine for the or confiscation of the offending cows in addition to jailing of the herdsmen. Other states should, without further hesitation, follow suit. It is that simple

Citizens should arm themselves with mobile phone cameras to capture the any cows that stray to towns, villages, farms or commercial area. If needed, we can supply drones from abroad with which to monitor the movement of the cows.

According to the Global Terrorism Index, Fulani militants were the fourth deadliest terrorist group in 2014, using machine guns and attacks on villages to assault and intimidate farmers.. Over 1,200 people were killed in 2014 by different groups of Fulani herders. In 2016, more people died in clashes with the herdsmen than in Boko Haram attacks

its a pity that this came out of the mouth and brain of a senator…… under which law of the land can a minister order that cows not belonging to him should be slaughtered ???????? the senator should initiate motions and bills that will make such roaming of animals in city centers an offence with sanctions…… his so called “order” cannot be implemented
