Despite being on the run for four years after a warrant of arrest was issued on him, an Abuja court has granted bail to Saminu Turaki, about one week after he was arrested.

A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja granted Mr. Turaki bail on Thursday despite the anti-graft agency, EFCC, stating its opposition and relaying how Mr. Turaki had avoided court and arrest.

PREMIUM TIMES reported how Mr. Turaki was arrested by the EFCC, four years after an arrest warrant was issued by a Federal High Court in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital, on May 3, 2013.

Justice Sabi’u Yahuza had directed the police and the EFCC to apprehend Mr. Turaki whenever sighted and bring him before it.

“You are hereby commanded to arrest the said Ibrahim Saminu Turaki and bring him before me at Federal High Court, Dutse, Jigawa State without delay,” the court had ordered the law enforcement agencies.

EFCC OPPOSES BAIL

The EFCC, whose operatives repeatedly tried to arrest Mr. Turaki without success for four years, opposed the bail.

The anti-graft agency’s counsel, M.S. Abubakar, opposed the bail conditions, highlighting the antecedents of the accused in avoiding trial and evading arrest.

“Our action of arrest was in furtherance of Section 35(1b) of 1999 Constitution, as well as a valid order of the court,” he said.

Mr. Abubakar said three days after the former governor was arrested, the EFCC asked the federal court in Jigawa to transfer his trial to Abuja.

“We submitted an administrative letter dated July 7, 2017 to the registry of the Federal High Court, Jigawa, requesting them to transfer the matter to the Federal High Court, Abuja for arraignment (before the vacation judge) or alternatively, remand him in prison custody pending arraignment. However, we have not received a response,” he said.

“Due to this, we filed a similar application dated July 13, 2017 to this honourable court.”

Mr. Turaki, who served two terms as governor of Jigawa from 1999 to 2007, was first arraigned by the EFCC before Justice Binta Murtala Nyako of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court on July 13, 2007 on a 32-count charge of misappropriating N36 billion while in office.

PREMIUM TIMES had reported how Mr. Turaki, in 2011, successfully foiled his trial at the same FCT High Court that granted him bail on Thursday. It was that his initial success that led to his being tried in Jigawa.

JUDGE IGNORES EFCC

Despite the EFCC’s argument, the court granted the ex-governor bail.

“Justice Halilu admitted the accused to bail on conditions which require him to deposit his travel documents to the registry of the court, produce two sureties with reasonable source of income and as well as report to the Commission every two weeks from today, July 13, 2017 till when the court resumes from vacation in September, 2017,” the EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, said in a statement on Thursday.

PREMIUM TIMES had reported how Mr. Turaki would have remained in detention until September 17, the date the Jigawa federal judge adjourned his corruption trial to.

Mr. Uwujaren later told PREMIUM TIMES that the commission would obey the ruling.

“Once he meets the bail condition, we’ll release him,” he said.

Although he granted the ex-governor bail, Justice Halilu Yusuf questioned Mr. Turaki’s motive in filing a fundamental rights suit on July 10 at the same FCT High Court challenging his trial.

“Why has the applicant chosen to come and drink from the cup of equity at this court. Was it not this same court that he refused to stand before prior to now?” Mr. Uwujaren quoted the judge as saying.

He, thereafter, adjourned the substantive rights’ application to July 20.

Buhari was right….the Nigerian judiciary is a problem.

    • Victoria

Judiciary and the senate are the problem of Nigeria. We need to get rid of corrupt judges and scrap senate for a while.

      • Julius

I’m actually surprised that EVAN hasn’t got out on bail yet. He must have spend all his ransoms money and nothing left to bribe the Judge and the lawyer. Let’s wait and see .

    • Kallah Bature

Something doesn’t add up here. Why was the case transferred to Abuja instead of taking him to Jigawa as requested by Justice Sabi’u Yahuza?

  • Mufu Ola

Some of these judges with their lawyer collaborators are semi lunatics.

  • ijelejames

He bribed the judge. Does anybody believe in Nigerian judiciary? Na only the corrupt judges waka come.

  • Alhaji

What do you expect? Do you want a muslim thief to jail a muslim thief? Their day of reckoning will soon arrive when God is ready for them.

    • Makusidi

Please wake-up, corruption has no religion. How many Christian judges have freed Muslim culprits and vice versa; please get civilized.

      • Alhaji

Name one muslim in the north who is not a thief. I can mention thousands or millions Christians in the south who are clean.

    • Julius

What do you say about the Christian JUstices ? You are the people we offer special prayers for every Sunday before the service starts .God forgive you.

Nigerian judiciary is notoriously corrupt without exception from the customary courts to the Supreme Court. We just saw a real court yesterday in Brazil that jailed its former president 9.5 years in prison. Can this ever happen in today’s Nigeria?
Abuja courts have been noted abinitio to be led by bunch of mafia and criminals. It goes back to June 12, to the 1992 days, court sessions are held at midnight in a kitchen. It’s unfortunate that federal high court Abuja had not changed for better over the years!

The same court sets Saraki free, despite the overwhelming and incontrovertible of mountain of evidence against Saraki. Same criminals, only difference is just the gowns and wigs /frocks!
Unless common people rise up and effect changes, highly unfortunate nothing, nothing, and nothing will change.

Negotiations and placating have never change any cabal, criminal gangs or mafiaso in any part of the world. It’s up to Nigerians, what type of a country or zoo do they want? An orderly one or a disorderly one? A sane and decent one or a kangaroo and chaotic jungle?

When the judges and the judiciary act with impunity, it just make the efforts of patriotic Nigerians extremely difficult if not nearly impossible! But no need to lose faith in a better tomorrow for Nigeria.

LONG LIVE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA!!!

  • Sean

Revolution will take place from the very quiet Nigerians both in Nigeria and in diaspora. We are sick of the judiciary and the senate! We are coming after these corrupt judges and senators, you heard it here first

    • No Komment

      “Acting President
Yemi Osinbajo should stop the lies. Nigerians have a right to know the
truth. I call on the cabal to stop the cover up and show us our President. I
challenge them to put him in front of a camera and let him talk. I challenge
them to let him tell us what country he is in, who the leader of that country
is, what date it is and what the weather is like outside,. I challenge them to
give us proof of life and proof of lucidity. I challenge them to prove to us
that he is familiar with his environment and that he knows who he is seeing,
who he is talking to and what he is saying. I challenge them to prove to us
that he is not suffering from chronic dementia and that he is not a vegetable
that is hooked up to a life-support machine. If Yemi Osinbajo and the
President’s handlers refuse to do any or all of these things it means that
there is more to the whole thing than meets the eye and they have
something hideous and very ugly to hide.”

NIGERIANS, NIGERIANS, NIGERIANS, rise from slumber and kill your treasury thieves,

if you want a good country for yourselves and your children, because for so long as

treasury thieves are free and safe, you will accept theft as the meaning of success.

    • Kallah Bature

That’s the fear of most Nigerians.Something reasonable should happen before the unexpected happen. May God help our country.

  • vivas

    @disqus_y8TShAu8Pt:disqus

Honest people in Nigeria will welcome the imminent revolutionary coup because it is morally correct
to now deploy deadly violence in final battle against Nigeria’s corrupt politicians. We do not ask for
any military tribunal or court hearing. Both are useless to society. We ask and insist that every
rogue politician be arrested, severely flogged, and shot twice in the skull on the spot.

All members of the family of each corrupt politician; including wives and children, must also be laid
to rest in perfect peace because they are not entitled to inherit stolen assets. Nigeria’s imminent
revolutionary coup is warranted for the physical elimination of Nigeria’s treasury thieves and their
    complicit families.

Death is the wages of sins. Anyone as a lawyer, banker or accountant, who’d assisted these criminal
politicians to steal or transfer money overseas, or to legalize thefts, or conceal any stolen asset,
must be arrested, stripped naked and severely flogged on the streets, and then, summarily
executed for treason on the spot for the moral cleansing of Nigeria once and for all.

  • Muhammad Lawan

What else do you expect. After all is the Nigierian judiciary!

  • George

Sha bi mumu Nigerians voted for half dead man buhari to come and eradicates all these corruptions so where is the monkeys now, in London right, spending our money for his sickness that will never go away from him.

Now they are telling us to have patient when they rejected Patience and asking us to pray for goodluck and they rejected Goodluck.

Yeye people if that was to be Southerners would he have gotten that easy bail conditions=== the sureties must have reasonable incomes. Southerners please lets move away from these Mullahs and ask God for forgiveness so that we can re-arrange our futures because these cow heads have no futures.

Nigeria: The road to failed state is APC

Do Nigerians think at all? How can anyone expect justice in Nigeria under Buhari? How can anyone expect anything other than economic recession with an incompetent stutterer like Bukola Saraki who struggles to speak English but who’s never made any sense, as Senate president? How can anyone expect anything other than mass poverty in Nigeria with a local urchin and financial rogue like Raji Fashola as Minister of Power? All governments before this APC nonsense were able to provide almost un-interrupted electricity during the rainy season when rain water fills
up the dam. But once the billy-goats called APC party arrived, it has been darkness all the same.

  • Concerno Nigeriana

    @lawantami:disqus

And then the Capone of the APC party
ignoramuses himself – President Muhamadu Buhari – who can’t get anything done
properly since resuming office but who instead made all things worse than he met it.

His enablers want the country to believe he’s fully recovered from his
secretly-kept illness but even when he wasn’t ill it was mediocre performance
all round, and he couldn’t deliver something as basic as justice, as prisons
remain empty of financial criminals in a fantastically corrupt country like
Nigeria. So what does Buhari’s recovery really mean?

Nothing, actually. His wife said it means that jackals and hyenas
inside Buhati’s government will be got rid of. Really? How did the hyenas and
the jackals enter the Buhari government in the first place? Of course Buhari
appointed them all with reckless indifference. What’s heroic in a threatened
cabinet reshuffle when it is the whole government that’s diseased and sick and
    bereft of knowledge?

Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a clear and present danger

Bola Ahmed Tinubu is the arrowhead of Islamist Jihad by deception in Yorubaland. Christians
must know that fact and be less naïve. Bola Tinubu has no other purpose in politics than to
build a coalition of Muslims and put Yorubaland under Muslims’ rule. Bola Tinubu has been
a clear and present danger in Yoruba history but the Redeemed Church and the other
          churches did not know it.

Using Taqqiya, Tinubu threw a bone to the Christians to tussle over when they revolted and he
imposed Akin Ambode as APC candidate to win Christian votes. But Bola Tinubu then quickly
surrounded Akin Ambode with an army of Muslims – from deputy governor to the secretary
to the government – to make the apparent Christian governor a mere figure of expression.

Pastor Bode Emmanuel had warned the Yoruba Christians not to follow Bola Tinubu and not
to vote for any Christian candidate he brings from his Islamist shrine of APC oath-takers.
But the Yoruba Christians did not listen. Now, Nigeria is in the middle of Islamist Jihad
under two Islamist commanders; namely Muhamadu Buhari as commander of the
northern front; and, Bola Ahmed Tinubu as commander of the western front.
Oba Akiolu of Lagos is the chief publicist of Islamist Jihad in Lagos state.

Sharia should be introduced all over Nigeria. I will continue to show openly and inside me,
the total commitment to the Sharia movement that is sweeping all over Nigeria. God willing,
we will NOT stop the agitation for total implementation of Sharia in the country (Nigeria).

It is a legal responsibility which God has given us, within the context of one Nigeria,
to continue to uphold the practice of Sharia wholeheartedly. What remains for Muslims
in Nigeria is for them to re-double their efforts and educate Muslims on the need to
promote the full implementation of Sharia law

Now that the judiciary has glaringly showed how corrupt it is, Nigeria is really tilting to a complete breakdown of law and order.
