Ademola Adeleke, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate in Saturday’s Osun West Senatorial District bye-election, has described his victory as a new dawn for democracy.

Adeleke said, at a news conference on Sunday in Ede, that his electoral victory was “a pointer that PDP will be victorious in the 2018 governorship election in the state’’.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Mr. Adeleke scored 97,480 votes and won in nine of the 10 local government areas where the election was held.

The All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate, Mudashiru Husain, polled 66,116 votes and won in only one local government area.

The late Isiaka Adeleke, the first Executive Governor of Osun, was occupying the senatorial seat until his death on April 23.

His younger brother, Ademola, who initially was contesting on the ticket of APC, defected to PDP, a day before the party’s primary, when APC leadership denied him the ticket.

He subsequently defected to PDP and was given the party’s ticket to be its candidate in the election.

The senatorial district comprises 10 local government areas.

He said: “We are working hard to ensure that the 2018 governorship election in Osun is won by PDP.

“My victory is a new dawn in the history of our democracy.

“Our democracy is growing where an incumbent will be there and opposition will defeat the incumbent.

“This is a rare gem and this shows that our democracy is improving.

“We want to make sure that there is nothing like rigging anymore, no matter how you try, we want our democracy to grow.”

Adeleke, however, commended the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security operatives for ensuring that the election was free and fair.

He commended the people in the senatorial district for coming out en masse to vote for him.

Mr. Adeleke also commended journalists for their sense of professionalism in the coverage of the election.

“I can assure you that I will continue from where my late brother left it and that is where I tag my campaign continuity,” he said.

Adeleke said he would engage in social welfare programmes for people in the district.

“I have budgeted N250 million for students’ scholarship, empowerment programme for women as well as free mobile medical care,” the senator-elect said.

    DEAR EDITOR,

    Condolence to General Obasanjo

Where’s General Obasanjo who said PDP party is dead? General Obasanjo can now see that political analysis
is not given to him or given to any Tom, Dick and Harry. General Obasanjo got zero percent in public policy
analysis because he’s mentally dishonest. Anyone possessed of average intelligence would understand
that for PDP to die APC must be growing inversely. General Olusegun Obasanjo does not think much.

Like an ostrich which buried its head in the sands, he could not see the APC elephant just rotting.
A party like APC which scorns thinking and thinks development is common sense, is a tragedy.
As a tragedy the near-illiterate APC party threw Nigeria into the worst recession within a year.
Obasanjo does not know that as APC fails and implodes, PDP party will naturally be vivified.
Knowledge eludes General Obasanjo on what he endeavours without relevant schooling.

The key is to count the votes and announced the votes at the wards level, in the presence of party’s representative. INEC shouldn’t be allowed to report results that do not correspond with the wards total.
    That must be enforced nationwide.
That’s why PDP won. No rigging. APC can also win.

  • Hakeem

Our politicians should stop playing God! A food for thought to Aregbesola and co.

  • kunle

parties should not deceive themselves by the result of this bye election… .. it was purely a personality base election.. that is basically the ADELEKES vs AREGBESOLA…. that was why it was possible for adeleke to cross to PDP overnight and still pick the ticket of the party,. APC was just not able to read the situation correctly… that the people were going to do sympathy vote for the adelekes…. simply, this bye election and its result has nothing to do with 2019 oooooooooooooo

    • Gabriel Olasebikan

Kunle, a prosperous Friday is known from the Thursday before.

      • Arabakpura

It is useless to rejoice on party grounds because you cannot differentiate between PDP and APC in the senate! It is correct to say that Adeleke defeated Aregbesola and the useless APC party but it has not helped our democracy in the senate because there is no party ideology there! In fact, the APC senators constitute the major opposition to the APC government than the PDP!

        • emmanuel

So you get the guts to abuse Amaechi’s party? We go tell am.
ehhhhh, APC useless? E be like say you nor dey get money from dem again. Wonders sall nefa end!

          • Arabakpura

That’s why you need to be believe me when I talk because I believe in the truth all the time! I don’t care who is involved! I can support Amaechi when I see people unnecessarily go against him because I support truth and not emotions! Are you sure you even have a country right now my friend?

          • emmanuel

I knew from the day you people packaged a bad brand for the market that you would go into receivership. I mused when Amaechi turned River State to the face of APC. I am old enough to know that Buhari was a misfit, but you all made him king.
Today, Nigeria has seized to exist.
Everybody is waiting for whatever would be should be. Only f**ls live like that and that is what you and your APC have turned all of us to – All Nigerians are f**ls, without exception.
If we are not, we should take this land back from the streets, yet we are waiting for the same band of criminals you sold as good product to change a dead dog – Nigeria!

          • Arabakpura

Forget about it! The same reason that made me to turn my back on Jonathan is the same reason I am turning my back on the APC! It’s a pity that Buhari’s sickness would not allow us appraise him, though he is a confirmed tribalist! Now, I have decided to vote for Nnamdi Kanu; until he disappoints me!

      • emmanuel

All elections, re-run bye and elections conducted in the last nine months or there about across the country have been won by PDP and other parties.
Who go see fire make he go put him hand?
The unfortunate thing today, is than Nigeria have no major political party today.

    • Otunba

Keep on deluding yourself…… if Jonathan did not engage in total mal-administration of the country, where would APC come from? The face of politics is fast changing in Nigeria; people are getting aware that they own ACE towards a successful or otherwise of any Party now.

      • 0tile

Party affiliation has nothing to do with this clean election. The election was based on darkness vs light, Islam vs Progress. Seeing what Buhari has done to Nigeria no Islamist will win election in the foreseeable future even in Zenguru North. Fool_me once shame on you, fool_me twice shame on me.

    • Frank Bassey

You are living in great delusion.

  • Hakeem

Congratulations. I hope you will be humble and magnanimous in victory.

  • Frank Bassey

The ‘mago-mago’ that earned APC the almost entire South-West some years past was a dubious victory. Aregbesola is one of the worst, most backward, inept, under-performing governors. He thought leadership was about radicalized Islam and such nonsense as “State of Osun”, flag, anthem …. Under him, education was dead in the once educationally advancing state. His face does not radiate any confidence. Welcome back to Osun State, PDP.

    • Olajiide Chris Adeusi

which party has been indicted for electoral fraud in Nigeria?

      • Frank Bassey

        Who does the indictment?

  • endipin

Don’t stretch your luck too far. You would have won if you joined Labour party or APGA!

    • Otile

Don’t say that, if Imam Mohamed was home Adeleke would lose big, they would rig him out, if he he refuses to go they would poison him.

  • Ezekiel

Mark you pdp thieves it’s not pdp thieves that was voted for but Adeleke. This is what will play out in 2019.

  • Politicians in this Country only use political party as a prerequisite for winning an election. It doesn’t matter which party won the election, what matters is what the Senator have for the teaming masses in his constituency.
