Nigeria summons Cameroon’s ambassador over Bakassi killings

PROTEST BY BAKASSI INDIGENES IN CALABAR

The Foreign Affairs Ministry has summoned Cameroon’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Abbas Salahedine, to give explanations on the reported maltreatment and killings of Nigerians in the Bakassi Peninsula by Cameroonian Gendarmes.

In a statement the government expressed dismay over the attacks said to have been occasioned by alleged non-payment of taxes on fishing activities.

“The ministry has instructed the Nigerian Missions in Yaounde and Buea, to investigate the report with a view to confirming their veracity and inform Headquarters immediately,” the statement signed by the Ministry’s acting spokesperson, Jane Adams, said.

“The ministry appeals to the Cameroonian authorities to exercise their duty of care and protection over the people of Bakassi, including other Nigerian citizens in the area,” the statement said.

A report on Friday had stated that no fewer than 97 Nigerians were killed as Cameroon Gendarmes allegedly attacked residents of Bakassi over failure to pay a N100,000 boat levy.

The report said the attackers sacked mainly Nigerians from Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Ondo States.

Many others were however said to have escaped at midnight with their fishing boats and arrived at Ikang in Bakassi and Ibaka in Akwa Ibom.

Nigeria ceded ownership of the peninsula to Cameroon in 2008.

The killing and sacking of Nigerians in former Bakassi is a violation of the 2005 Green Tree Agreement (GTA) by the Nigeria-Cameroon Mixed Commission.

The agreement stipulated that the Bakassi returnees must be properly resettled to their natural homes so that they can have a meaningful living.

The GTA also states that Nigerians who choose to remain in Cameroon can do so without any molestation.

South Africans killed Nigerians, nothing happened.
So Cameroonians were just testing their marksmanship, no ‘offence’ intended!

    • This are Calabar indigenous person not the problematic igbo-biafra clan, we should all feel sorry for their plight.

      • Abdullah Musa

        But we do.
        I was just being satirical.
Nigeria seems to be condoning the killing of its citizens in other countries.

  • ijelejames

Why did Nigeria give up the peninsula in the first place. Our politicians are in Abuja to loot not to do anything in the interest of our people. Shameful!

  • Otile

I miss General Sani Abacha. If the criminal cabal did not poison Gen Abacha he would be alive today and Bakassi people would not be killed and robbed this way. Gowon sold Bakassi to to French Cameroon to hurt Igbo, Aremu Obasanjo formally handed the territory to them to buy the coveted Nobel peace award, Mohamed Buhari abandoned the people just to save time and money for his Northern people. Our brothers and sisters have suffered rape, robbery, massacres and inhumane treatments at the hands of Cameroonian gendarmes. Unfortunately Buhari and Osinbajo have abandoned them to focus on the Northerners displaced by Boko Haram Muslims.

    • musa aliyu

See this I’d*of! Human lives are involved and u’re busy telling lies, in the name of politics. What did ur jonadumb did on the peninsula issue? Mtchewww. Better go take more of ur Sapele water so U can sleep to eternity.

      • 0tile

Arna, you know very well that your people kuma Aremu Obasanjo would behead Jonathan if he said something about our people in Bakassi. Jonathan is a peace-loving gentle man, unfortunately your people kuma Aremu misconstrued his good nature and used it against him and our people. You people are like pigs if a good man throws his precious pearl at you, you trample it underfoot and go after the good man. Wallahi.

      • Tunsj

Couldn’t have said it better myself. I have always thought there was something bad in the water in his area. If you know what I mean. I stopped a long time replying to his crazy comments.

        • 0tile

You stopped because you have no intelligence to match what I am saying? Your reasoning is not developed beyond primordial instincts.

          • Mufu Ola

“……primordial instincts”.So you understand what primordial instinct is with all your live miseries blamed on imaginary enemies-Hausa,Fulani,Northerners,Yoruba etc?

          • Otile

I am not suffering any misery, boy. I thank the Lord for His great mercies, down in my heart I thank God for what he has done for me, I am by no means suffering misery as you would want it. I along with your Hausa masters will always say: na gode Ubangiji.

      • 0tile

What are you struggling to say?

    • okenwa

I pity those brothers and sisters there but if biafra is actualized, can cammeroun still lay claim on them? since it was given away by nigeria. Answers.

      • 0tile

Nigeria betrayed and sold them out because of where they came from. In history despite this kind of abandonment by foreign conquerors Israel did not abandon their people. Today those furlong Jewish irredenta are once more joined with their folks in the holy land of Israel. Praise God.

        • okenwa

Ok now, we pray we will have our brothers and sisters back no mather how long.

          • 0tile

For sure, the Lord does not abandon His people.

          • Mufu Ola

God have abandoned Biafra since 1970.

          • 0tile

You sound like one of those Babylonia infidels who were mocking the persecuted Hebrews saying – ubinam est Deus tuus? God is on the side of His Biafran people. If God was not on the side of Biafra the Nigerian vandals would have wiped them out. If God was not on the side of Biafra, Biafran soil would today look desolate, worse than North East Nigeria where people are perishing of hunger and hopelessness in the refugee camps. Government is borrowing money to feed the refugees but Northern politicians are stealing the feeding money and materials. Nobody helped Biafra to rebuild, but because God is on their side they rebuilt and are still ahead of many places in Nigeria untouched by vandals and violence. Think about it and give praise to God for Biafra.

          • Mufu Ola

Repeat. God have abandoned Biafra long time ago.

      • ha ha ha ha good question!

    • Really? this are calabar indigenous person nothing to do with the igbo-biafra agenda problem.

What’s the point of having a government? When they can’t protect her citizens

    • Izedomi Ohirein

The were under the government of cameroons. Nigeria is doing what is expected.

      • 0tile

You yorubas are traitors. Shame on you.

        • Izedomi Ohirein

Yorubas don’t owe you loyalty, to call them traitors.
They do what is in their best interest. I am not a Yoruba.

          • I bet you’re considered a very honorable one, any tribe would be proud to call you theirs.

          • 0tile

Don’t mind his pretense, the yahoo is a full blooded Yoruba man. Indeed you are right to tell him how much you are proud of him, he is your own. Quest, you know you are a good Yoruba man. You are your brother’s keeper. Awon omo Odua meji, gba dun.

          • I’m from KANO!

My point is he is a Nigerian to be proud off no more no less.

        • Mufu Ola

Just like Igbos were traitors before being “blalaed” by Abokis!

        • The Yoruba’s betray you by allow you in their territory so you and your children do not stave, you’re right no good deed goes unpunished.

      • Oracle

If Russia could defend her citizens in South Osetia in Georgia, and claims the same in Cremea and other parts of Ukraine’s territories today, I think Nigeria has the right to defend her citizens in bakassi peninsula; moreso that Nigeria and Cameron are patties to the so-called Green Tree agreement. Shikenan
In addition, if we so much value the lives of our citizens back home, it will be hard for the xenephobic killings in South Africa to be sustained for this long, let alone the Cameroon killings.
What did the government do about the killings of peaceful IPOB demonstrators?; what about the hundreds of Shiite killings admitted by our own army and kaduna govt?

If you sell your people so cheap because you are destitute of wisdom or wealth, you can’t buy or redeem them back when you become ri. So, it all began at home. No organized government can kill an American, Briton, French, even Chinese like that..

        • 0tile

Don’t mind them. Their minds are not developed. Yorubas in particular are only highly developed in insults and gutter language.

        • Izedomi Ohirein

What Russia did in Georgia is wrong. It is not a good example.
You can’t compare us to Russia who make their weapons.
We have army generals who steal our money and buy us fake weapons.
Boko Haram, biafra miscreants, armed fulani herdsmen to contend with.

But nigeria sold them to cammeroun and they are now cammerounians so why is nigeria intervening. No one is blaming awolowo here.

        • 0tile

The were sold by 2 traitors bigger than Awolowo.

        • Izedomi Ohirein

Would Court judgement was based on Britain transferring sovereignty over Bakassi to Germany & their voting with South Cameroons to leave Nigeria in 1963.
Awo or Ahmadu Bello had nothing to do with elections conducted in Bakassi & Southern Cameroons in 1963 by The United Nations.
Zik, Okpara & Igbo who ruled Southern cameroon from 1957 – 1963 are in the best position to answer why they loss us Bakassi & Southern Cameroons in 1963 UN plebiscite. While we still have Adamawa & Jigawa- States, parts of cameroons ruled as parts of northern Nigeria.

          • okenwa

Mr man shut up your mouth. Gowan and awo traded you to win the war against biafra. You were sold to block relieve materials or war arsenals from entering biafra. Go ask you father what happened.

          • Izedomi Ohirein

You are misinformed. Try and read World Court judgement on bakassi and be better informed.
Gowan & Awo or Obasanjo had nothing to do with the people of bakassi voting to join Cameroons in 1963.
Igbo greed, aggression & lack of consideration for others feeling course Nigeria South Cameroons & bakassi.

          • okenwa

I said shut up there. You voted in 1963 and the result to give you out to cameroon came in 2008. You were sold by gowan, awo and obj to block biafra but pray that biafra is actualized so that you may regain your freedom.

          • Izedomi Ohirein

There is no shred of evidence in UN supervised election or World Court judgement to back your malicious misconception.
Most of you biafra miscreants are victims of Okoko Ndem War time lies.

  • Intrepid

Nigeria, the evil country, shall never know peace for betraying these people, and other injustices they have carried out on her citizens. The people of bakassi were never given the choice of a plebiscite. Their ancestoral land taken away from them, and now see the inhumanity they are being subjected to.

Gowon and Obasanjo have a lot of questions to answer God.

    • Izedomi Ohirein

      You are very wrong.
Bakassi voted to join French Cameroon in 1963 with Southern Cameroons, but Nigeria retained Bakassi until Obasanjo was compelled to return it after World Court Judgement.
Adamawa & Jigawa States, which were parts of Cameron’s ran with north are still with us, while Southern cameroons ran with old Eastern Nigeria elected to leave us. Blame Igbo who dominated Eastern Nigeria.

      • Intrepid

Bakassi that was and remained part of former Southern Eastern of Nigeria (CR & Akwa Ibom states) was never part of that arrangement.

When the Fulanis herd their cattle into Benin classrooms, blame the Igbos. The time is coming when you will blame no one else, but your self.

        • Izedomi Ohirein

          No sir
Bakassi voted with Southern cameroons in 1963, but was retained, because it was part of Calabar kingdom.
It happened that Britain had transferred it Germany, hence it became part of cameroon & was returned back to them.
It would have remained part of Cross River had Britain not transferred it to Germany.

    • okenwa

Please you cant sell something to me and tell me how to use it. Allow cammroun to enjoy her goods.

      • 0tile

That is an ungodly way of doing business. We are talking about human lives here. Do you know how many God’s own people killed because of the selfish decisions Gowon and Aremu Obasanjo took during their sordid regimes?

  • 0tile

You see, today the people of Bakassi feel like the Jewish people who were oppressed, tortured and killed in Babylon. After so much inhumane treatments by their oppressors they sat down by the Rivers of Babylon, there they wept and cried to the Lord remembering Jerusalem. The ungodly will mock and dismiss the episode saying: ubinam est Deus tuus(wherefore is your God), but God always delivers and blesses his people with abundance. The infidel does not know this.

  • Eldorado

    I refuse to believe it!
97 Nigerians are wilfully murdered by another country and all we here of is a summons?!
I would advise the people in the presidency to resign if they actually mismanage this epic insult!
They will cause all Nigerians in the diaspora to be sitting ducks for target practice.
    Good Lord!

  • We need to take our land back from this idiots, the ones we need to push out and get rid of are the igbo-biafra’s.
