The Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, has said negotiations are ongoing for the release of more Chibok schoolgirls still in the custody of the Boko Haram terrorists.

He also expressed optimism that the dialogue would yield the desired result in due course.

Mr. Osinbajo made this known on Tuesday evening at an interaction with journalists and activists at the state house in Abuja.

“There is a lot of negotiation going on,” he said.

He said the government has “gone quite far” with negotiations to free more girls, but did not provide details of the negotiations for apparent security reasons.

The vice president hinted that one of the challenges of freeing the girls was the existence of two factions in Boko-Haram, with each faction holding on to some of the girls.

One of the factions is led by Abubakar Shekau, the erstwhile leader of the group, while a breakaway faction is led by Abu Musab al-Barnawi, believed to be a son of the late founder of the group, Mohammed Yusuf.

Mr. Osinbajo, however said the Buhari administration was very committed to the release of the remaining Chibok girls and other captives held by the Boko Haram.

“It is a matter of conscience and it’s a matter that concerns everyone,” he said.

Boko Haram had seized 276 pupils from the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok on the night of April 14, 2014. About 57 of the girls managed to escape in the immediate aftermath of the abduction.

Negotiations between the federal government and Boko Haram had led to the release of 21 of the girls while another three were freed by soldiers. Dozens of others had escaped on their own.

Despite losing most of the territory they controlled at some point, including the dreaded Sambisa forest to Nigerian troops, the insurgents have kept hold of an estimated 195 girls, with some of them already feared dead.

About 2,000 teenagers have been reportedly abducted by Boko Haram since 2014, with many of the women used as sex slaves, fighters and even suicide bombers, according to Amnesty International, the London-based human rights organization.

On Tuesday, the United Nations Children Fund, UNICEF, said that at least 27 teenage girls have been used as suicide bombers in Borno within the first quarter of 2017.

There is no evidence that any of the Chibok girls is among the suicide bombers.

This government is a fraud !

  • El Patron

They should intensify the negotiations, its been too long. Chances of rescuing the girls is next to zero at this point. The only way to get them back is to negotiate

    • uncle Sam.

      Thank you.
By carrot and stick approach, in a diplomatic way. Maybe it maybe.

      • Netanyahu

Dundy, you believe the so called chibok girls are a few naira notes you can put in your back pocket without anyone knowing you have money on you? The boko haram is moving around with nearly 200 girls unnoticed? Your brain is more like water melon.

        • uncle Sam.

What is wrong with you? We are talking about finding people kidnapped here.
Must the government give up completely even when there is one percent chance out there that some of those young girls may still be alive?
The way you people reason is disgusting.
I guess if your daughter was amongst the kidnapped girls, you would have given up any hope of finding her just because boko haram is now moving from place to place.
Hatred, and tribalism has already destroy your abilities of viewing things from logical perspectives.
Furthermore, abusing others without reasons are signs of bad upbringing.

  • Names of SUICIDE bombers pls!

    RUSSIA
The Russian Government has released the full details (identity) of the suicide bomber who attacked its nation and wrecked havoc earlier last week.

    TURKEY
Turkey also released the detail (identity) of a suicide bomber that attacked he earlier last month.

    UNITED KINGDOM
The identity and detail of the attacker who rammed his car at a bridge and killing people in the process has been released by the UK government.

    NIGERIA
BUT in Nigeria, Names, address, occupation etc of suicide bombers and killer herdsmen are NEVER made public.

Nigerians and supporters of Imam Buhari must be told that the bomber in each case above died in the bombing and had no ID cards with them that survived the incident. So questions are:

    a) Why can’t Nigeria identify her own Islamic extremists?

    b) Is Buhari and his APC party hiding something?

    c) Does it mean it will cost Nigeria more to acquire forensic laboratories than to buy fighter Jet from US govt?

    d) Why is the world this wicked? Why is America wicked and indirectly supporting terrorism?

The United States Selling fighter jets to Nigeria (which costs more) rather than selling forensic technology to Nigerian govt is tantamount to aiding and abetting corruption.

    • uncle Sam.

So, that decision by America to sell fighter jets to Nigeria is causing you sleeplessness?
Have you not seen the new assault helicopters and Russian fighter jets just procured by Nigerian?
Think very well before you start another madness in the name of biafra.
The world has lost appetite for anything that could cause the breach of peace.
The handwriting is on the wall. So, be wise, choose the part to peace instead of stupidity.

I really wonder when this mischief of the United States and by extension the western world will end. All terrorists and Islamists that have attacked US or attempted to attack US have always been identified by her security services FBI, etc…No where have we seen Fighter Jets flying over the skies of Boston, New York etc or the San Bernardino shootings, rather it was INTELLIGENCE & FORENSIC SCIENCE that the United States always employed. How come in Nigeria the United States is VERY comfortable that Nigerian government does not identify and name suicide bombers and other terrorist attackers? Why? Instead, the US is concentrating on selling arms arms and more arms to Nigeria rather than selling forensic laboratory equipment and communications technology to help Nigeria identify and track the Islamists. This is crude evil.

—How can Fighter Jets be the focus when suicide bombers hit almost every week?
—Would Fighter Jets be the solution were US faced with the same problem?
—Why must US profiteer from the unfortunate Nigerian situation…engaging in business instead of helping?

…and Nigerians and her dumb leaders are all silent. This is a shame. W

You forgot: El-rufai, after paying his brothers (Herdsmen), used his agents to arrest Southern Kaduna Christian youths; paraded them as herdsmen.

  • jegedeh

They deliberately prolonged the Boko Haram rescue, for political gain. They need to keep the Boko Haram issue alive in order to gain from the western world. For example, the U.S. is going to sell 12 war planes to Nigeria for the purpose of “fighting Boko Haram”.

  • uOkwunna

Since the inception of this administration they only use Chibok girls and fight against corruption as their tools of deceit/blind-folder against Nigerians, corruption they are not fighting, Chibok girls releases, that is unending political gimmicks. Nigerians watch out in few days another rented girls will be released as another batch of Chibok girls released. If the Nigerian army has taken hold of Sambisa forest yet those girls numbering more than 197 were not found then take it or leave it those missing girls if truly there is any are living in Aso-rock or with Oby Ezekwesili in a secluded/hidden place because Oby Ezekwesili is Chibok girls and Chibok girls is Oby.
Osinbajo, Buhari’s failure in respect to his purported fight against corruption will not harm this contraption because we are used to it rather what will finish this nation is the series of lies by this administration which internationally portrayed Nigerians as true animals in the zoo.
Osinbajo please who are the faceless Boko haram members that you are negotiating, Militants presented Clarke and others, who is representing the Boko haram or are you negotiating with ghost?. Who Is Deceiving Who?.

    • uncle Sam.

I think your case is a hopeless one.
It is of no use trying to make you understand some basic principles of how government engaged on sensitive issues such as this.
Having said that, since Nigeria has become a so called zoo to you and your co travellers, the easiest option left for you was to exit it.
Biafra is only a mirage that exists in the imagination of confused people, it will not happen. Better learn to leave with that fact.

The activities of US as regards fighting terrorism in Nigeria is disturbing. I really wonder when this mischief of the United States and by extension the western world will end. So where are the girls hiding? How come those girls released earlier last year have been unable to inform the Army or the Nigerian govt where they were kept (in the bushes or at the houses of the Emirs)? The whole world is laughing at Nigeria…laughing at Africa. We are really a DARK continent.
