Gunmen have attacked a United Nations monitoring team at the Nigeria-Cameroon border, killing five people.

Three Nigerians were among those killed, a UN statement said Wednesday.

“According to preliminary reports, at around 14:00 hours, yesterday (Tuesday), an unknown armed group attacked a UN Technical Monitoring Team, killing five individuals – a UN independent contractor, three Nigerians nationals and one Cameroonian national – and injuring several others,” the UN envoy for West Africa and the Sahel, Mohamed Chambas, said in a statement.

“The team was conducting a field mission in the vicinity of Hosere Jongbi, near Kontcha, Cameroon, about 700 kilometres north of the capital Yaoundé, as part of the Cameroon-Nigeria Mixed Commission mandate,” he said.

The UN “strongly condemned” the attack and called on Nigeria and Cameroon to take swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Taraba State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Silas Sanga, announced that one of those killed was the Assistant Surveyor-General of the state, Zakari Bakari.

He said the deceased included a Kenyan and another Nigerian from Jigawa.

Mr. Sanga said Mr. Bakari together alongside a UN official and some staff of National Boundary Commission were killed in Koncha village in Cameroun, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

He said the deceased were killed on Tuesday while in the process of demarcating and delineating the Nigeria-Cameroon border in line with the judgement of the International Court of Justice.

He said the deceased entered Cameroun through Toungo Local Government Area of Adamawa to conduct the exercise.
Mr. Sanga added that the deceased were members of International Committee set up by the UN to conduct the exercise.

“The Cameroonian authorities have released their corpses and the corpses have just arrived Adamawa as I am talking to you,” Mr. Sanga told NAN.
The spokesman of Adamawa Police Command, Othman Abubakar, who confirmed the killing, said he had not received full details.

The UN offered his condolences to the families of those killed in the attack and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.

The Cameroon-Nigeria Mixed Commission was established by the UN Secretary-General at the request of Presidents of Cameroon and Nigeria in 2002, to settle border disputes between the two West African neighbours.

The Mixed Commission’s mandate includes demarcation of the land boundary and delimitation of the maritime boundary between the two countries.

It also includes the withdrawal of troops and transfer of authority in the Lake Chad area, along the land boundary and in the Bakassi Peninsula.

Addressing the situation of populations affected by the demarcation activities and development of recommendations on confidence-building measures aiming at promoting peaceful cross-border cooperation, is also one of the mandates of the commission.

Risk assessment, did UN officials ever tried to do one before their mission? If not then it was a suicide mission. Quite unsual of an organ like UN. Rip to the victims.

  • zung

Premium Times, your heading says ‘…killed in Nigeria’ while the main news shows it was in the Cameroun side of Cameroun-Nigeria mixed zone. Why the mischief? Was it even so necessary for the exercise to take place at this dangerous time? RIP to those affected.

UN team in Nigeria crossed into Cameroon

      • zung

I very well read and understood that. For the UN team to cross over from Nigeria to the Cameroun side of the mixed zone and get killed doesn’t mean they were killed in Nigeria as the headline portrays. The headline is misleading please and journalists must be journalists not as copywriters.

  • NAMES of Suicide bombers pls!!

    Dear EDITOR of Premium Times,

    What are the,
    —Names
    —State of origin and
    —Address

of the following suicide bombers that took place in Nigeria in the last 9 days
    1. Thursday November 24, 2016 @ Maiduguri
    2. Tuesday January 24, 2017 @ Maiduguri
    3. Wednesday January 25, 2017 @ Maiduguri Mosque
    4. Tuesday January 31, 2017 @ Maiduguri [Even the name of the so-called Vigilante killed alongside the suicide bomber has not been released. How can we believe that the story is true?]

Are u people going to sweep the matter under the carpet without telling us where the so-called ’12 yr old girls’ come from or least her names?
—Why are parents never declaring their girl children missing before and after each suicide incident?
—Why are the parents of these children not arrested? Bcos we know they can’t be children of the Islamist terrorists.
—Why is it that only in Nigeria that names of terrorists/suicide bombers are never made known to the public?
    — Why is there never any info about their family members of suicide bombers? Why are they shielded?

In other countries names of terrorists are given and family members quizzed to track co-conspirators. In Nigeria everybody including the perpetrators (Boko haram & Fulani Herdsmen) and their relatives are shielded by government. No investigations. No arrests. No prosecution. How then can the war end? Should we allow the politicians to be smarter than all of us?

    Premium Times Editor,

There are no RADICALS in Nigeria

    I just want
to ask a question in the public interest. But first of all let me thank Premium
Times for keeping us informed on the daily activity of Boko Haram. Left to the
Buhari government we are to believe that Buhari defeated Boko Haram since
December 2015. We know better that Boko is not defeated. In fact since 2015
when Buhari came into office, Boko Haram has killed over a thousand Nigerians,
including no fewer than four Lt. Colonels and tens of junior officers and soldiers.

    The question
I want to ask now is this. When Nigerians say the Buhari government is so
useless that it has not done anything well since 2015, how about the fact that
Buhari has exposed the so-called “radicals” in Nigeria as fake people? Is that not a
big achievement? Before now Wole Soyinka did a whole press conference in Lagos
that our humanity has been destroyed over few minutes of go-slow caused by Mrs.
    Patience Jonathan in Port-Harcourt.

    • David Igoh

………..(2) There are no RADICALS in Nigeria

      Two years later, when Muhamadu
Buhari’s commanders in the army now killed over 300 Shiite Muslims in Kaduna
and buried them in mass graves, Wole Soyinka has not seen anything violating
our common humanity in that genocide till today. Even his boy, Femi Falana too
has kept quiet till today. What sort of radicals are those ones? To me they are
not radical anything, they are partisans looking for what to eat. In short they
      are not honest people.

      Where is the other rabble-rouser,
that other noise-maker – Festus Keyamo? Nowhere to be found. Meanwhile Buhari
and the Nigerian army are under investigation for crimes against humanity at The
Hague. Wole Soyinka prefers to pretend that he is not aware of it and not aware
that for the first time in history, a Nigerian head of state is now being cited and
investigated by an international court for the worst human rights violation in
      history.

He is a professor wine and young girls he is also a friend of ameachi bcos he can supply the above

        • Solomon A.

          @charlieoboto:disqus

Is Festus Keyamo 85 too? Is Femi Falana 85 too? Lok, let’s say the truth. These people are fake.

What is the point protesting something but supporting the same thing when done by your friends?

      • Charlie

Who makes Wole Soyinka your radical? He is 85 years old, I bet he is older than your father. I don’t see you or your father on the street protesting for anything other than hide behind a computer and write garbage.

      • Julius

You are a moron. That man, Prof Soyinka had done more for this country than your entire clown family put together. You fools never learn not to be depending on all these International this, International that. You will be disappointed as always at the end. I see you’ve abandoned the UN and move on to Trump, your new saviour. We shall see.

  • grand maze

I think the people killed simply donated their lives to make headline news. They are now statistics. What were they thinking going to do boundary demarcation inside bokoharam bedroom. Anyway next news please.
