INTERVIEW: How I amassed my wealth –Saraki

Bukola Saraki

The president of the Nigerian Senate, Bukola Saraki, has spoken of how he worked hard to acquire massive wealth, although he said he did not know his worth.

Mr. Saraki told the Abuja editor of BBC Hausa service, Naziru Mikaliu, in an interview that he is wealthy because he comes from a blessed family.

Mr. Saraki also spoke about the Petroleum Industry bill, the Panama papers and his trial for false asset declaration. Excerpt:

Q: What is in the Petroleum Industry Bill, PIB?

A: What we have tried to do with the good governance institution is to try and work out an environment that is in the petroleum sector to ensure transparency, good governance, reduce duplication, ensure efficiency in the petroleum sector. We spent about four to five months working on that and its good to see that finally we have got to a stage where it passed second reading, which had not been achieved before now.

Q: Officials always talk about corruption; do you believe Nigeria is a corrupt country?

A: My take is that I must market my country, so I am not gonna be able to label the country as such. My view is that yes there are issues that we must address, but I am not gonna hammer on that so much because I need to market my country so that I can get private sector in flow. I must create an enabling environment that will encourage that because without that as government alone, it will be difficult for us to be able to see the kind of growth that we are talking about.

Q: Have you seen corruption for example taking place…

A: Of course there are, that is why we have oversight functions. Like many other countries, we have those kinds of challenges, but we have moved a long way.

Q: Many in this country see a lot of politicians as wealthy individuals, for example, you as an individual; how much are you worth?

A: I don’t know!

Q: You don’t know how much you are worth? How much did you declare ?

A: I can’t remember these figures

Q: That means it’s a huge figure?

A: I don’t think it’s a crime anywhere for you to either work hard or be blessed. What I think is important is the commitment to serve.

Q: How did you amass all this wealth?

A: I come from a blessed family. I come from a family where my parents were opportuned and after that I worked hard in the private sector and I think I have worked hard for everything that I have. I made 95% of my asset before I joined government.

Q: You talked about generating more revenue and collecting more taxes; but a member of your family was implicated in the Panama papers?

A: The issue was that they found out that the company has been set up; but it was a holding company; which had nothing to do with taxes, nothing at all.

Q: Why was it set up?

A: It was based on legal advice. The company was set up because they were acquiring an asset and it was advised at that time that I had to set up. It was not a company set up by ourselves but by a legal firm and to the best of our knowledge, no law was broken.

Q: You are currently standing trial before a court accused of falsely declaring an asset?

A: Yeah, that case is ongoing.

Q: So did you declare anything that was not yours?

A: As I have said many time on this case, I will prove my innocence. These were forms that were declared over 13 years ago and it only emerged in August after I became Senate President. If there were infractions in those forms the Code of Conduct could have raised those items a long time ago; they didn’t. So I said I am confident that I will clear my name and I don’t believe that I have done anything wrong.

Saraki stop lying and be bold enough to come clean on the issue of your false declaration of asset. The case was already on before the present government came to power but was treated as PDP family affair. Please stop linking it with your been senate president and just prove your innocence.

  • wonderboi

This Saraki is so skillful and evasive, he knew that if the case is allowed to go on in court he will loose so he is doing all he can to stop the case by any means of he sleep with corruption ,eat corruption and smell corruption, one sickening thing about Nigeria ruling class/politicians is the way they amassed wealth like there is no tomorrow or like is going to take them to heaven , he should be ashamed of himself for saying he doesn’t know is worth in a country where people are dying of hunger

The title should have read: ‘HOW I AMASSED MY WEALTH AT THE EXPENSE OF NIGERIANS’ – Saraki.

  • Rommel

We have now seen that because the government agencies did not do their duty then,Saraki is now using it as evidence of his innocence, this goes to show why corruption must be rooted out especially in the judiciary where all manners of court orders are given based on how much one can afford, there is even one court order preventing any authority from investigating someone who has held public purse and misused funds in it.

      @disqus_MSz5KF4VNF:disqus

Bukola Saraki gave this nonsense interview only because he knows that President
Muhamadu Buhari is not fighting any corruption. If President Buhari was
fighting corruption Bukola Saraki would have run away by himself through the
forest into exile to escape public execution or life imprisonment.

Yet APC is celebrating corrupt people joining them. Or is Orji Uzor Kalu not corrupt? Has he not become a saint after joining APC? Surely, like Sylva, his N3.2billion loot will be washed away and rewarded with ministerial appointment or senatorial seat.

My own point is that Premium Times is violating freedom of speech on this Bukola Saraki story. We want to say our mind but Premium Times wants only cool anger but there’s no rule that says we must be cool when we now see
somebody giving interview to talk of hard work but who has only worked as a salaried employee in the bank
where his father is part owner. This is a real insult to public intelligence but Premium Times is blocking us
from saying how angry we are to read this rubbish. What hard work gave Bukola Saraki 60 million dollars
that was exposed in his name in Panama as cash assets, gave Bukola Saraki five houses in Ikoyi,
gave Bukola Saraki another five houses in Abuja, and gave Bukola Saraki 3 houses in London,
on the fixed salary of a public service worker? Tell me the hard work so that me too can do it.
I have a lot of muscles in my hand. Tell me the hard work!!

Yes, but that excuse is not gonna work this time.

  • INSIGHT

Seriously? He’s not even straight forward. A little more pressure from the moderator would have made him crashed. More of this kind interview are needed and believe me, he’ll vomit the truth.

    • Opekete

This is a wishy washy interview. The reporter was paid to ask preconceived questions in order to make Saraki look good.

  • Segun Abayomi

I now agree Buhari is not fighting any corruption…….he can’t even convict crooked and thieving SarakI. Saraki is a born thief from day one.

    • Julius

      He will, just hold tight.

    • tuby NY

DO NOT blame PMB yo, blamed the “corrupt n compromised” judges pls!! Buhari is taking/charging them to court accordingly with evidences; so Buhari CANNOT convict or tried them other than investigate and take them to court — and it’s left to these yeye judges to do their jobs! But obviously, most of these judges are corrupt too n part of them problem. So what more legally can PMB do sir?

    • Question Mark

      Question mark;

      If Bukola Saraki
says he was not stealing from Kwara state treasury account, and was
forbidden by the 1999 Constitution from engaging in any simultaneous trade
or commerce whilst working as a public servant on fixed salary, should he not
explain where he got each batch of money he was alleged to be stashing away,
50 times a day, into his private bank account, according to EFCC findings?

And, by the way, Bukola Saraki may has a case of moneylaundering to answer
on the 60 million plus dollars he stashed away in Panama, since Nigeria was the
likely origin of that money. Bukola Saraki had lied last year when found out, that the
money belongs to his wife’s father. Bukola Saraki’s lawyers in Panama screamed
havoc (at such brazen lies) and quickly released documents in a Press statement
that the entire 60 million dollars solely belong to Bukola Saraki.

      • Pointblank2000

If Bukola Saraki said this sort of thing in
America folks could slap him all around because provocation is

a complete defence to assault. For the next 100 years Bukola Saraki can’t
explain where he got the money.

Q: Have you seen corruption for example taking place…

    A. i am corruption personified ……….. next question please…..

Q: How did you amass all this wealth?

A: I come from a blessed family in the nigerian context, catch my drift? I come from a family where my parents were opportuned to grab as much as possible and sit on the can, catch my drift? and after that I stole hard in
the private sector (even shut down a bank, can you beat that!),catch my drift? …….and I think I have stolen hard for everything that I have…………. I made 9.5% of my asset before I joined government, for goodness sake,do you have my drift now?!!!!!

  • Angry Niaja

if as Saraki claimed in this interview that he will prove his innocence, the question the reporter should have asked is Why then for the past year, have you been going round all the courts to try and stop the trial, Oga? but of course, that’s Nigeria for you

    • Opekete

Thank you. It is either the reporter was paid to do an interview with soft question and not the critical stuff that will put him off balance. Premium Times is gradually losing its balance and I hope the center will be able to hold for them if they continue on this path.

  • SAM .A

If the way Saraki worked hard is the same way Nigerians have been working hard, stealing , looting , and defrauding ,pillaging, budget paddling at all levels and bankruptcy of Society General and Trade Bank s .All Nigerians will be millionaires by now . Go and tell that story to the marines .

  • Curtx Maccido

The THIEF said he’s blessed with wealthy family and he has worked hard to earn every kobo….It will be nice if he can swear that his family had any assets apart from the ones stolen from government and tell us in details where has he worked in the private sector to have so much that he didn’t know about? He also said he MUST market Nigeria to be able to answer simple question about corruption, who want him market Nigeria? This is the same bloke who collected salaries as serving and former governor whilst he is a senator, he took loan from gtbank to buy houses and pay back with Kwara State funds, billions of naira were unaccounted for while he was governor of kwara state for 8 years – particularly the statutory allocation and state IGR, he under/over declared his assets to accommodate frauds and public funds looting – this guy is lucky Nigeria is not a tidy country on frauds and corruption, he should have been publicly prosecuted/hanged!

    • Lakeside

Saraki is a real thief…mother f…ck.r. he is a shame to Nigeria. I wish to see him on the street of London or Tokyo or Toronto or Washington DC , he go hear wen.
