El-Rufai replies Atiku: You are a liar, I dare you to go to U.S.

atiku-abubakar-and-nasir

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State has responded to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s allegation that he (Atiku) was betrayed by the governor and former chairman of the EFCC, Nuhu Ribadu.

PREMIUM TIMES published excerpts of an interview where the former vice president made the allegations.

In a statement he personally signed Tuesday, Mr. El Rufai accused the former VP of falsehood.

He said Mr. Abubakar “has a record of spewing outright lies and innuendo against my person”.

“As we struggle to build a law-abiding society and secure progressive outcomes for our people, we cannot allow the triumph on these shores of those who will have us move to a post-factual world,” he said.

The Kaduna governor said not even Mr. Abubakar’s expertise “in the dark arts of damaging other people through a campaign of lies from him and his media machine” is capable of returning the country to its past.

Mr. El-Rufai said contrary to the postulation by Mr. Abubakar, he never had anything to do with the incorporation of Transcorp.

“Those that established that company and fronted it like Festus Odimegwu, Tony Elumelu, Otunba Lawal Solarin and Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke are still around and alive.

“As such I could not have and did not offer Alhaji Atiku any shares in Transcorp. I declined the shares that were offered to me. Having done that, how could I have offered anyone shares?,” he said.

The governor said he even advised the then President Olusegun Obasanjo, Mr. Abubakar, and then finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, not to accept the shares they were offered by the promoters of Transcorp.

“My counsel to them was based on the grounds that they would face conflicts of interest when Transcorp bids for privatization assets.

“At the time Alhaji Atiku and Ngozi were chair and vice-chair of the National Council on Privatization, and were particularly directly involved in approving the sales of state-owned enterprises and assets.

“It is too late in the day to try to pretend that the fiasco concerning the attempt by then Senators Ibrahim Mantu and Jonathan Zwingina to extort money from me for Senate clearance never happened.

“All Alhaji Atiku has just done is confirm that he paid the Senators, as I revealed in Page 139 of my book,” he said.

He also said when he published The Accidental Public Servant in 2013, Mr. Abubakar unleashed his media team in a campaign of vilification.

“Despite the viciousness of the attacks, they did not contest or explain away his shenanigans that were detailed in the book, from the Ericsson manoeuvre, to the Abuja water treatment plant contract and his obsession with marabouts and their assurances of the political big prize.

“He might also consider a full reckoning for what he and his acolytes did with public funds in the PTDF imbroglio, rather than indulging the usual bold face of the Nigerian big-man.

“As a federal public servant, my oath of allegiance appropriately stood with the Federal Republic of Nigeria, not the big men whose conduct I was privileged to witness at close quarters.

“People like Alhaji Atiku think that loyalty to them should be the goal of a public officer, and that it should trump the oath of allegiance to the country.

Although Mr. El-Rufai and the former vice president are both members of the APC, Nigeria’s ruling party, the Kaduna governor hinted that their public spat may be a battle for the party’s presidential ticket in 2019.

“Alhaji Atiku is already running for 2019, and he thinks that he can make people like us collateral damage in his attempt to rejuvenate his image,” the governor said.

“This obsession for power inclined him to support the rebellion against the party that manifested in the National Assembly, and is continuing with obvious disrespect for the incumbent president.

“Everyone knows that I support and will continue to work for the success of President Muhammadu Buhari as he leads our country through tough times,” he said.

While Mr. Abubakar has not publicly indicated any interest to run for president in 2019, several Nigerians believe he would be Mr. Buhari’s main opponent should the president seek a second term in office.

However, there have also been reports that Mr. El-Rufai is scheming to be the party’s presidential candidate in 2019 should Mr. Buhari decide not to seek re-election. Mr. El-Rufai did not comment on that rumour in his Friday statement.

The governor also accused Mr. Abubakar of corruption saying the former vice president has not gone to the U.S. for fear of being arrested.

“Can Alhaji Atiku explain the findings in the report of the United States Senate Permanent Sub-Committee on Investigations which detailed a pattern of wire transfers of more than USD 40 million from offshore companies like Siemens into bank accounts controlled by him and one of his wives.

“The report detailing the US Senate findings is online, as one of four case histories of foreign corruption in the USA. Alhaji Atiku should tell a better tale of why he is avoiding the United States of America.

“Someone as obsessed with Nigeria’s presidency as he is, should clear up such matters conclusively. We wait to see how well he does with that,” Mr. El-Rufai said.

NIGERIANS, NIGERIANS, NIGERIANS, rise from slumber and kill
your treasury thieves, if you want a good country for yourselves and your
children, because for so long as treasury thieves are free and safe, you
accept theft as the meaning of success.

  • JP

El- Rufai is as useless as Atiku.

    • No Bull …..

IMO, El-Rufari is a better useless man than Atiku.

      • Abu Saleh

El-Rufai is a better man than Atiku.

        • No Bull …..

Agreed. We are saying the same thing. Perception is everything.

  • Ade

El-Rufai we know you are as a man on integrity, please declare your asset publicly so we know how much you worth. If you dont, you are hiding something hence you are not different from Atiku; a thief!!

    • Abu Saleh

It’s declared already… Haven’t you heard? Use FOI Act to access it.

      • James Ojapa

The word you missed out there was PUBLICLY. tell el rufai to spare us the FOI hassle and declare his assets PUBLICLY.

  • FreeNigeria

Worthless Nigerian politicians, they can’t survive without stealing public funds. Look at them, disgrace to humanity

  • Aminu Baba

““It is too late in the day to try to pretend that the fiasco concerning the attempt by then Senators Ibrahim Mantu and Jonathan Zwingina to extort money from me for Senate clearance never happened.”

El-Rufai should have put it this way; “It is too early in the day to………” because what these revisionists do is to wait long enough in time for memories to fade away before they spew in their lies to distort obvious historical incidents

Finally, I was thinking…how could someone obsessed with marabouts ever become Shariah Compliant?

  • TAWANDA INCOMMUNICADO

Atiku is more corrupt while El-Rufai is extremely religiously and tribally bigoted, hateful and vengeful……….the choice is between the devil and deep blue sea !!

    • Abu Saleh

In other words, el rufai has plans to replace baba after on tenure or he is planning For the north to hold on to power for 16 straight years- two tenures of baba and two tenures of el rufai. Tufiakwa!

    • princegab

2nd term for pmb preferred afterwards, power should go to the SE.

El Rufai never reach retirement age yet.Atiku has.

  • Dazmillion

I hope Nigerians will not be forced to chose between Atiku and El Rufai in 2019 presidential election as was the horrible case in 2015 of us having to chose between Dumbo and the Daura Herdsman

    • Olusola

My friend, with benefit of hinds sight, Atiku will win landslide unless PMB turn the ship of nation from current adrift position. It will be voting for (A) corruption plus food on the table or (B) anti-corruption and starvation. That is what it would look like and guess which option?

      • Dazmillion

Cant there be a candidate that will offer food and anti corruption at the same time. This is the bane of Nigerian politics, it always throws up the worst choices.

        • AmenWolf

Unfortunately, Nigeria was built on corruption and would collapse without corruption.

        • smart

Why do people claim we have only two choice? When there are always many more intelligent choice to make. Nigerians pls vote out the two so called big and extremely corrupt big parties for once.

          • Dazmillion

Thats the problem, we love the big man image. There was actually a female presidential candidate, Remi Sonaiya, in the last election, but nobody wanted to hear from her.

We were only interested in Tinubu Jonathan Buhari Saraki, Ameachi, Ekweremadu, El Rufai, Fani-Kayode, David Mark, Fayose, Koro, Ngige, Okorocha, Akpabio all of them criminals goats that have been stealing the system dry. Those are the type of big men Nigerians are interested in.

          • Being intelligent in Nigeria politics does not garner votes, money does. Otherwise, Gani Fawehinmi and other brilliant Nigerians would have been people’s choice

    • jamajake

I don’t think so,we have presidential candidate from south east #PeterObi2019#

  • Mamman Bako

Atiku should prove el-Rufai wrong by visiting the States.

  • Arogbo

If I have to choose between Atiku and El Rufai, I think I’ll choose El Rufai, he seems more brilliant between the two. I don’t believe Nigerians will be voting for the former VP Atiku, knowing that he has a legal matter pending against him in the US.

    • AmenWolf

You want to vote a wahabi terrorist el rufai! I am sorry for you..

    • smart

Do you mean El-Rufai or Hell-Rufai? I understand that is his new name. My dear, both should go and rest. Nigeria deserve better.

  • persona

Atiku has ramped up his rhetoric leading to his presidential ambition because, Trump doesn’t send who becomes our president and that works for Atiku because he wont need to go see Trump anyways.

  • emmanuel

El-Rufai has lied here again. This character in May 2014 at a forum in Kaduna, told the World that Buhari was a political liability and that the then new party must not look his way if they hoped to make any progress.
Unfortunately, he is here lying to love Buhari so much.
I am certain El-Rufai will not get near Aso Villa. May be he would end up at Garki

    • smart

El-Rufai or Hell-Rufai as some call him is simply not the kind of president Nigeria need at all. Atiku should also forget about the presidency. As for PMB, we can’t wait to kiss him good bye – nobody wants more economic woe.

      • Factsay

They also call him Hell Tufia

  • princegab

2019 in progress. The problem pmb will create should he quit after 4 years is the possibility of power staying in the North for 12 years. Because whoever is going to replace pmb has a constitutional right for a second term. It might make sense to vote out northern candidates to set a level field of 4years since GEJ had 4 years.
8 years should be for those who exceptionally performed, wanted 2nd term and we are sure, are ready to do more.

    • Michael

Your comments are childish because your primary concern is about the ethnicity of the future president not whether or not he ( or she) would be a good candidate. It’s not too late for you to free your imprisoned mind from the shackles of tribalism and prejudice.!

      • princegab

You misunderstood me because you do not understand some of the invisible variables in Nigeria’s polity. My comment has nothing to do with tribalism but equity and justice.

      • Netanyahu

Detribalized Nigerian? You are one of the biggest fools around. Keep dreaming.

    • emmanuel

you are right. the North will be done with 4 years. It is the turn of the South

      • Ubong

forget about the presidency ever coming out from the North. Plotters of peaceful political power returns know this was one of their primary motives of using and blinding people like Tinubu ad his sycophants from southern region to make sure this is achieved. Mistake was made when they willingly gave political power to OBJ to appeased June 12 election won by late MKO. Power is the North as far as we still have Nigeria, hence you see every so called congregation of thieves called party has already accepted presidential candidate must be a Northerner. I salute the shrewdness and smartness of these Northern political strategists for their wisdom amd political vision.

      • Nija pikin

No 4 years is not enough at least 12 years then to the southwest but never southeast they can’t be trusted we rather send it back to south south after southwest,

  • Nigeriasucceed

Atiku should shut up! There was an incidence at the Nigeria high commission with a corrupt protocol officer and when this man by the name of kudu was moved to a different department, Atiku insisted kudu be moved back to protocol. Rumors has it that Atiku sleeps with this man kudu. Atiku is evil.

  • PLAN A

Since APC came to power, open fighting has been their hallmark. From the President and his wife to the rank and file, all that happens in APC is rancour, accusations and counter-accusations! It is a party doomed to fail from birth. A group of strange bedfellows sharing a six spring bed,and wanting nothing less than full comfort. The PDP hoar and egg heads were reckless, but in power, they were not this bad. APC is on the verge of imminent collapse and Buhari may be in travelling when it happens.

“No sensible president continuously travels round the globe while his
country, Nigeria, is in terrible hardship and economic mess. It can only happen
in Nigeria where all that matters to the President (Buhari) is the full introduction of
Islam, annihilation of his political opponents and the absolute extermination of
the people of [Igbo] the old eastern Nigeria. Buhari, prior to his questionable
victory at the polls as the president of Nigeria, made lots of promises which he
has obviously failed to keep and in most cases denied.”

      Abubakar Atiku
can hardly explain the origin of the wealth he says he has as a retired
Customs officer on fixed monthly salary. Nigerians only got a hint of Atiku
and gleaned the pattern of Atiku’s wealth accumulation when Atiku put the
PTDF government funds in Trans International Bank where Otunba Adenuga’s loan
papers were already waiting for almost the same amount.

Such wheeling and dealing is classified as organized crime in the United
States of America and in Western Europe. But under the infamously corrupt
regime of Olusegun Obasanjo it was only used as an administrative tool to attempt
to bar Atiku from contesting the 2007 election. Anyone looking at Nigeria fall
to pieces nowadays should understand where it all started. Olsegun Obasanjo –
described by the Senate as the grandfather of corruption – destroyed Nigeria
      with thefts and gross immorality.

  • tuby NY

INSULT to INJURY huh!.. If Atiku is NOT corrupt as he claimed, NO HUMAN BEING is corrupt in Nigeria oO!!

      @tubyny:disqus

Documents were leaked to Punch newspapers showing that Muhamadu Buhari too was actually blowing
away the funds in the treasury in the five [5] months he pointedly refused to appoint Ministers; between
      May 29th 2015 and September 30th 2015.

Muhamadu Buhari was the sole approving authority at all relevant times.
And now that the Senate has been alerted, it has decided to probe these dubious multi-billion Naira
      payments.

In one instance, and within 60 days of taking office as president, Muhamadu Buhari paid Brigadier Buba Marwa
one billion Naira in two installments in July 2015. The payments cannot be justified against Buba Marwa’s airline
(Albarka Air) which collapsed in the year 2005.

      • Malik

        Story!!!
Atiku no go near Aso Rock again, that’s all.

        • Netanyahu

But you agree that the jihadist is by far more corrupt? Buhari stinks. He thinks Nigeria’s resources are for him and his northern agenda, particularly his IDPs that have gulped hundreds of billions of naira and yet he behaves as if Nigerians were in agreement when they established boko haram that we should bear the brunt of taking care of the victims boko haram activities in the north east. So we have forgotten what his wife said of him? We are a miserable lot

      • Powerlessconscious

He used the money to buy Suya. Is it? Lolzzz liar.

  • Bilisi

    @tubyny:disqus

    Nasir El Rufai himself took
5 billion Naira from Sanusi Lamido Sanusi who took that money from Central Bank
vault and handed it over to El Rufai. That was two years ago. Nigerians never
asked questions on the whereabouts of that 5 billion Naira till today. Are
Nigerians people who desire progress? It is not obvious. Education has only
made Nigerians into better thieves and better slaves alike.

    If Nigerians
are people who desire progress they’d get rid of the icons of their shameful
past and look for a honest person imbued with knowledge and the swift
revolutionary zeal to drain their country’s swamp and create a brand new
country. But Nigerians are educated for nothing.

    The educated ones and the
stark illiterates in the country show roughly the same poor judgment. Hence
Nigeria sinks into the mires of the worst poverty ever since the country’s
regretful independence. Nigerians will rather discuss those robbing the country
and do nothing with that discussion.

    • Achu Ezeana

“A situation where proven looters of the Nigerian state have ganged up to determine who is guilty

of corruption or not – superintended by a melancholic religious zealot, who himself is stained with

the perfidy of corruption – amounts to the blind leading the blind. The destination is the large,

and deep pit of destruction. Nigeria is on this road of doom.”

El-Rufai here sound more like an opportunist than a leader concern with giving good governance. Singing praises of the president in such a manner and pitching Atiku as against the president is desperate and really low. what I see here is, El-Rufai like other politician are being more obsessed with keeping Atiku off Aso rock than they are with the country’s true development. There is obviously a circle terrified of the thought of Atiku being the president of Nigeria and they have used Nigerians to fight their war.

  • Mr. Abdin

This man called El-Rufai should note that Nigerian political history cannot be forgotten easily. He has betrayed everybody including his political mentor that is why he always claimed to be Mr right. he has forgotten his mess in BPE and FCTA where a lot of impunity has taken place. He has forgotten how he betrayed everybody even the person he is accusing by the way some one should not even waste his time as there are so many facts in My Watch written by Obasanjo. However El- Rufai should also note that Atiku Abubakar is a politician that has influence all over the country and if God destined that he will be President nobody can stop him. A word is enough for the wise. God bless Nigeria.

    • Powerlessconscious

Fcta was rubbish before el rufai.

  • Nuorah

If Atiku is corrupt, he would have been found guilty of corruption by all panel and cases brought before court. The only corruption indictment against Atiku was a white paper which was safe to eat up by Obasanjo administration over night to including the very EFCC that he helped found and other cabinet ministers, which he challenged in court.
The court rightly dismissed all those indictments as being mere political: and till today nobody has ever indicted him of corruption.

    • Malik

There’s a reason he won’t set foot in America – it’s because the evidence to indicted him of corruption is readily at hand, all that’s missing is him showing his face.

I did as Governor El-Rufai suggested, and I was able to locate the United States Senate Permanent Sub-Committee Investigations on four case histories of foreign corruption in the USA findings.

I downloaded it – it’s in PDF format – and I did a quick search for the keyword ‘Atiku’ using the ‘Ctrl+F’ key. The entries related to the keyword ‘Atiku’ are sixty in number and below are some excerpts.

Some excerpts from the US Senate findings:

Abubakar Case History. From 2000 to 2008, Jennifer Douglas, a U.S. citizen and the fourth wife of Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President and former candidate for President of Nigeria, helped her husband bring over $40 million in suspect funds into the United States through wire transfers sent by offshore corporations to U.S. bank accounts. In a 2008 civil complaint, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission alleged that Ms. Douglas received over $2 million in bribe payments in 2001 and 2002, from Siemens AG, a major German corporation. While Ms. Douglas denies wrongdoing, Siemens has already pled guilty to U.S. criminal charges and settled civil charges related to bribery and told the Subcommittee that it sent the payments to one of her U.S. accounts. In 2007, Mr. Abubakar was the subject of corruption allegations in Nigeria related to the Petroleum Technology Development Fund.

Of the $40 million in suspect funds, $25 million was wire transferred by offshore corporations into more than 30 U.S. bank accounts opened by Ms. Douglas, primarily by Guernsey Trust Company Nigeria Ltd., LetsGo Ltd. Inc., and Sima Holding Ltd. The U.S. banks maintaining those accounts were, at times, unaware of her PEP status, and they allowed multiple, large offshore wire transfers into her accounts. As each bank began to question the offshore wire transfers, Ms. Douglas indicated that all of the funds came from her husband and professed little familiarity with the offshore corporations actually sending her money. When one bank closed her account due to the offshore wire transfers, her lawyer helped convince other banks to provide a new account.

In addition, two of the offshore corporations wire transferred about $14 million over five years to American University in Washington, D.C., to pay for consulting services related to the development of a Nigerian university founded by Mr. Abubakar. American University accepted the wire transfers without asking about the identity of the offshore corporations or the source of their funds, because under current law, the University had no legal obligation to inquire

      • Nuorah

It seems you are confused how can you proof it ? is it by mere disjointed documents remember if Atiku is wanted by the USA it will have been everywhere. Pls go and do more research jo.

        • Malik

          “How can I prove it?”

You think these were findings made by the Nigerian Senate abi?
Or you think Atiku was the only culprit?
The givers of the bribes like Siemens have already admitted culpability and you are here asking me to prove what some parties to the crime have already pleaded guilty to.

“if Atiku is wanted by the USA it will have been everywhere”

Who says it isn’t? It is everywhere, that’s why I was able to download and peruse the document without going to America.

Try harder. You have to work for the money he paid you to launder his image.

          • Nuorah

No I don’t remember that . Show us the petition you wrote to ICPC on that as it is a criminal act for hm to continue to govern without declaring his asset. So play your part instead of wailing !

          • Nuorah

So you mean you don’t how El-Rufai as a DG of BPE and how he started with almost nothing but later he acquired so many wealth after he left the office and became Minister. However, remember how the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar helped him pick him from the street in the US and made him what he is.

          • tundemash

Cl0wn , stop being incoherent; you stated he didn’t declare his assets and I asked you to show us the petition you wrote and now you have shifted to another claim he had nonthing before became DG of BPE; can you then show us his bank account balance as at when he became DG BPE or else u are the most stup1d thing ever to crawl on this earth !

Gov. El-Rufai is so far the best FCT Minister which made many believed he will do a great job as the Kaduna state governor but recent invites by the governor has proven otherwise.
I feel sad seeing a State Governor whose scores of his people has lost their lives to the activities of Fulani herdsmen serving as the ATTACK DOG of the former President Baba Iyabo and a special adviser to the incumbent President leaving his primary duties as a state Governor and his people to be massacred by the dredged Fulani herdsmen.
I feel very sorry for the good people of Kaduna for what their governor has reduced himself to.

    • Powerlessconscious

Fulani herdsmen is a national issue. Look for something else to judge the governor.

      • sirOscie

so is corruption and boko haram, which he El-Rufai has benefited from and he’s still benefiting from.

  • Izedomi Ohirein

Atiku would have been as corrupt & wasteful as Jonathan if he was given the opportunity to rule Nigeria.
We all know that El Rufia & Nuhu Ribadu are Nigerians of high integrity, the calibre of Late Tunde Idiagbon. . Atiku is a looter, with stolen assets in USA ETC.

Politics is not arithmetic, numbers may not always add up.
What I find nauseating is some people’s penchant of seeking, using, and discarding godfathers.
But serves the godfathers, the relationships were never altruistic in the first instance.
Does El Rufai love Buhari? Most unlikely.
The fact is Buhari is the new platform to climb.
Once his use is over, he will be discarded, abused, like Atiku.

    • Powerlessconscious

People like Alhaji Atiku think that loyalty to them should be the goal of a public officer, and that it should trump the oath of allegiance to the country… Elrufai.

      • Abdullah Musa

Correct if you believe El Rufai.
I don’t. Hausa people say a snake does not dig it’s own hole.
Opportunistic people use others and dump them.
It is fine not be grateful.
It is irresponsible being abusive of someone whose back you rode to fame.

        • Powerlessconscious

Atiki too does not have right to accuse el rufai.

          • Abdullah Musa

            He may not have.
            I am not his spokesperson.

Whatever happened to rude Imam Kwankwaso

  • S. A. Maigari

To tundemash: What about Nuhu Ribadu, the PDP governorship candidate for Adamawa state in 2015? He collected President Jonathan’s campaign funds like all other PDP stalwarts exposed as corrupt for doing the same thing, but the EFCC has never looked in his way. Consider the half-hearted probe of ex-governor Kwankwaso, now APC senator, for another example. Ribadu has since joined the APC as an escape route, like many other corrupt politicians now defecting to the ruling party because they see it as a safe haven. In any case, PMB and APC promised to fight corruption generally, not just with regards to security funds. The Justices now being investigated had nothing to do with campaign funds.
