A senior Nigerian soldier was on Tuesday killed by the Boko Haram, army sources told PREMIUM TIMES.

B.U. Umar, a lieutenant colonel and commanding officer of 114 TF battalion of the Nigerian Army was ambushed by 9. 30 am Tuesday alongside his troops on Tuesday morning between Bita and Piridang.

“His vehicle stepped on an improvised explosive device, but he was not hurt,” a source told PREMIUM TIMES.

“He came out to assess the damage on the vehicle and Boko Haram opened fire and killed him in the process.”

Eight other soldiers were injured and evacuated to Michika, Adamawa State, for treatment.

The soldiers were said to be on their way to Yola in Adamawa State from Bita in Borno State when the incident occurred, sources said.

The full casualty from the attack is not yet clear.

Mr. Umar, who recently took over the command of the 114 battalion about three weeks ago, was a member of the 48 Regular Course in the Nigeria Defence Academy, NDA.

When contacted, the Army spokesperson, Sani Usman, said he was unaware of Mr. Umar’s death. He said he would seek further confirmation from appropriate authorities.

The killing of Mr. Umar occurs about a week after another Lieutenant Colonel, Muhammed Abu-Ali, and his troops were killed in another ambush by Boko Haram.

Fourteen Boko Haram insurgents and four other soldiers died in that attack, the army said.

The attacks by the Boko Haram have continued despite ongoing negotiation with the federal government. The negotiations already led to the release of 21 of the over 200 Chibok girls kidnapped by the sect in 2014.

Government of lies. Buratai and Liar Mohammed should account for all that’s happening to the Nigerian soldiers. They said they have defeated Boko Haram. Buratai recently said there’s no Boko Haram in Nigeria anymore. The question now is: Is it another Boko Haram operating right now or the Mohammed Yusuf formed Boko Haram?
I think the government is sacrificing the solders to renew it’s rituals

    • Moshe

They are sacrificing the soldiers for Chibok girls

  • Tori Osa

When contacted, the Army spokesperson, Sani Usman, said he was unaware of Mr. Umar’s death. He said he would seek further confirmation from appropriate authorities.
He is not an authority? Maybe he intends to ask me what happened.

  • Rommel

I am beginning to doubt the professional competence of our soldiers, this is a result of the many years of abandoning their primary responsibility for politics,Boko Haram is the first real challenge they have faced after the civil war and we can all see how they are faring, many of them can only be rough when it comes to maltreating unarmed hapless civilians

    • brightasuquoakpan

Ambush does not show incompetence because no man can see everywhere. The northern area is vast hence any body can locate any place and ambush the soldiers.

      • Otile

First of all what are these soldiers fighting for? Why not allow Imam Abu Shekau to break away with his people? There is no oil in the North East. So what are they dying for?

        • Observer

now I can see how shallow your level of reasoning is… is it all the northerners that said they want to have their sovereign states or some sets of islamic religious sects ? you need to b rehabilitated

          • Otile

See how shallow your reasoning is, there will never come a time all Northerns will speak with one voice. You are dull indeed. Many will like to stay in one Nigeria for crude oil, many others will like to break away to enjoy their Islamic religious freedom. Yet many will like to stay in Nigeria because they cannot survive by themselves. Don’t reason like a rat in a hole.

      • VERITAS_ the rock of ages_

indeed ambush shows no incompetence. it does show lack of understanding, modern training and improper preparedness. All route in and out of base plus patrol sectors should have been mapped out and choke points singled out so when on patrol and a team approaches a choke point, everyone stays frosty, cover’s their sector of fire. Basically counter ambush (pushing, leap frog) should always be in the psychology of the troops. there are many simple ways of ensuring troops are never ambushed. And when they are ambushed they PEEL successfully. The problem is the commanding officers have zero intellect or experience of war strategies. They are just learning that. The current Boko-Haram fighters that are responsible for these ambushes i believe are not the defeated ragtag foot soldiers but rather the well trained ones and commanders that is why they have had a strings of success.

    • emmanuel

same cowardly attitude of yours – manoeuvring around Buharis failure. You prided six months ago on the exploits of Buharis Soldiers, how they dealt blows Jonathan could not on Boko Haram and Liar told us they were decimated and can only attack soft targets of the local women and Children.
Tell me if two Lt. Col. are soft target.
Useless people who thrive only in propaganda and refuse to face realities. It is now years of neglect. I thought it was Jonathan? Your mumuness nor get levels.

    • LasgidyPort

“His vehicle stepped on an improvised explosive device, but he was not hurt,” a source told PREMIUM TIMES.
“He came out to assess the damage on the vehicle and Boko Haram opened fire and killed him in the process.”

Is a professional soldier not supposed to secure the environment first, or ascertain if the environment is safe before proceeding to assess the vehicle?

      • emmanuel

They do not understand the art of war. they probably study ethnic and tribal soldiering in their academy

        • Julius

Moron, tribal bigot you. I bet you know more than the army.

        • Burbank

And among those killed were soldiers from both South and North Nigeria, from the same Academy

          • VERITAS_ the rock of ages_

            100% true…

      • VERITAS_ the rock of ages_

Well said. Yes we always secure the environment before we leave the safety of the vehicle. mostly when an IED has just gone off beneath your vehicle. Everyone is supposed to scramble and set-up a defensive perimeter before accessing damaged done. I remember the same situation in Helmand. They would set up IED’s and once our pinkies or humvee’s where hit the 1st instinct is to step out and look for cover and check if charlie’s or tango’s where around. But later the haji’s started planting IED’s around perfect cover positions so when you ran for cover you would step on a pressure plated or trigger operated IED. Nigerian troops need real battlefield experience and better training.

        • LasgidyPort

Wow, the scenario you shared is just too advanced. Our troops here will regularly fall victim to such until lots of soldiers have been wasted; and they then learn from experience.

      • Burbank

How do you secure the environment if you don’t leave your vehicle?

    • Julius

100%on the spot. I also think that BK has spies in the army. They seems to know where the soldiers were going. Caution must be applied and make sure plans are on a need to know basis.

      • emmanuel

The spy is GEJ ang Ihejirika. Yeye fowls

        • Julius

Maybe you will be serious one day. Hope it wont be too late.

          • emmanuel

I f serious pass so, na im be say na wéré be dat. However, you and your band of weak brains should keep deluding yourselves until Buhari ground Nigeria finally.
A man who ran away from writting WAEC cannot lead a country or a war1

  • Ajike Ole

The soldiers were part of the propaganda now it’s obvious the smoke can’t be covered. May his soul rest in peace Amen

  • George

I have no pity for any dead Soldiers they refused to fight under GEJ but only ready to displace THEIR madness under their tribal backward Buhari so it served them right.

    • government

Where is the humanity in you.

      • Julius

He has none. Biafraudians are a special breeds…no humanity in any of them. This is a case in point.

    • Yusuf

      You must insane.

    • ebong

You are mocking your compatriots, even in death! You’re heartless.

    • Observer

don’t worry, I leave you for Karma to judge, it will surely catch up with you, you will remember this day

    • Malik Isah

God will judge your severely George or whatever your name is.

    • Burbank

Soldiers under your GEJ refused to fight because GEJ told Dasuki Sambo to steal money for their weapons allocation!

  • emmanuel

According to Kukesheka and Liar Mahammed – The military and APC liars, they have killed close to 1,000,000 Boko Haram insurgents since last year.
We have also read and listen to their several Boko Haram surrender in their hundreds every week up unti; a month ago.
By their lies we now know them.
They cover up ineptitude with lies and they have the likes of Rommel the undertaker dancing skelewu for them.

    • Observer

they there dey cry fowl… Buhari’s attack on Boko Harm is 1000 effective than that of GEJ…terrorism is not militancy…read facts

    • Burbank

You listened those fantasy stories from radio biafra!

  • BAKO

A couple of days an evil slanderer made a slander against Buratai, now another hypocrite has concorted another fake story just to spread hatreds and campaign of calumny. FUCKING BASTARD HATING HATERS, UP BUHARI, UP BURATAI.

    • emmanuel

shuuooo, which kind trouble be dis maggot. We all saw Lt. Col Ali’s burial. Abi na Burutai be your constituency?
by the way, is Burutai still in Maiduguri or Bama?

    • Otile

      Ayodele Bako,
What are you talking about? The bus has left you. You’re the only one standing and praising Nigeria!s discredited and corrupt generals. Buratai in particular is anathema to decent people everywhere. Yorubas should stop praising corrupt Fulanis.

      • Burbank

Brig general Momoh had been sacked, discredited and disgraced for corruption. But Cross River man Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas is doing a great job killing the Niger Delta terrorists in the creeks.

  • marc umeh

Maybe the nigerian army should swallow thier pride and rehire mersenaries to do the fighting for them. They seem to be better equipped by virtue of their superior training and intelligence. They understand the African mentality.
Lies and cover-up cannot do it. We have tried that tactics long enough. Boko Haram have popular support ( they are from the area), they have the will to fight till eternity or till they get to heaven whichever comes first. They have the money to support there aggression. They also have the drugs to fuel their zeal.
This war will last for long , long time.

  • Hamza

Simply unblievable! For how long are we going to be saying RIP to Nigerian soldiers? One of my major issues with Buhari is that this govt is damn too slow. No sense of urgency in trying to correct things. Does the president read news at all? It is time they stopped being overwhelmed and stopped laying blames. They should move their arses and produce more visible change. I am tired of these boko haram stories! Could the boko harams be invisible? In Nigeria? During the day? Invincible? Just unblievable! R. In P Officer. So sad.

    • smart

He reads cartoons. And most of the military has been sent to #nigerdelta

  • Julius

Its clear now, the terrorists has an informer/spy in the Nigerian Army. They need to find him/her quickly . Im sure it will be a muslim fundamentalist. God help us.

  • Gary

Why are senior officers in theatre moving around without adequate security escort? What the hell is going on with the growing incidents of top officers getting ambushed by terrorists who were just a few weeks ago under pressure and in retreat?

It’s time for the NASS to summon the military chiefs to give us a clear-cut explanation about why the war is suddenly going badly for our troops. The people have a right a know, it’s their loved ones paying the supreme sacrifice for the rest of us.

    • blueeyedkitten

going badly? because senior officers are now being killed? the truth is, some of our soldiers will definately go down in this war. whether senior or other rank. there is no place where war is fought without casualty.
the NA is winning this war, and i dont see how ocasional killings of our gallant soldiers doesnt mean the terrorists are retreating.

      • emmanuel

Jonathan is wasting our gallant officers with his ineptitude!

        • Braun

          lol

      • Gary

        E-rat,
Yes, it’s going badly, unless you’re now willing to admit that you folks have been deceitful with earlier information from the regime and Army spokesmen that BH was in retreat. Wasn’t that what the people were told just prior to the release of the Chibok girls?
You cannot have it both ways and make light of the fact that army commanders are getting killed by an enemy that the world was told had been “technically defeated”.

Again, we deserve to know the truth about the conduct and true status of the campaign against the Sunni terrorists. They appear to be reinvigorated in the wake of recent negotiations with the Buhari government. So let’s stop pussyfooting around a subject of life and death.

        • blueeyedkitten

NA YOUR FATHER BE E-RAT! PEANUT BRAIN!

      • Solomon Brown

A battalion comprises of 300-800 men as a fighting force, for these rag tag terrorist fighters to target a battalion commander says a lot about who has gained or lost the initiative in this war. What happened to reconnaissance before the movement of troops?

        • Burbank

USA lost a general in the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon and another general in 2014 in Afghanistan. Both are killed by rag-tag terrorists fighters.

          • Solomon Brown

How much do you get paid to come online and spew crap daily, huh, tell me? I’ll pay you double to stay quiet. Once again BOUNCE OFF.

          • Burbank

Still unable to counter my facts.

          • Solomon Brown

Because there’s nothing factual in all you just said. You spoke about a terrorist attack on a military complex and a helicopter crash, trying to compare both incidents to an officer on the front lines. Apples and oranges might all be fruits, but they are a whole lot different. BOUNCE OFF AGAIN.

          • Burbank

*You spoke about a terrorist attack on a military complex and a helicopter crash…. ”

Lt Gen Timothy Maude was killed when AlQaeda terrorists crashed a plane into the Pentagon on 9/11 and Maj Gen Harold Greene was killed inside the US Afghan army base by a Taliban terrorist dressed in Afghan army uniform in 2014.

I didn’t mentioned the 1970 chopper crash that killed Maj Gen John Albert B Dillard Jr during the Vietnam War when his helicopter was shot down.

Try to read English properly and comprehend.

          • Solomon Brown

The key words here are “Pentagon” and “base”. Did you even read the word frontlines in any of those deaths. I’ll send you a copy of “brighter grammar”. It seems you skipped English comprehension class.

  • westernrollings

The best anti ambush in the Nigeria’s NE. is to be clearing the road with heavy fire power from the starting point to the destination.
But the Commanding officer will stop their soldiers from doing that.
They claim they are economizing the ammo. Just imaging. Compare the wasted ammo and the life of a snr officer and that of his men.
My advise to all personnel serving in the north east is to clear the road with firing until their destinations. For me,it is better you fire your wpn and be detain by military police than to blindly enter bht ambush. Further more the drivers should always search for presence of abnormal and absence of normal on the road.i swear it is going to help a lot. Commanding officers let us stop assuming. Boko still full everywhere.

  • VERITAS_ the rock of ages_

Arent Nigerian troops thought to always secure the environment before leaving the safety of the vehicle. when an IED has just gone off beneath your vehicle. Everyone is supposed to scramble and set-up a defensive perimeter before accessing damaged done. I remember the same situation in Helmand. we always prayed to just make it through the day. The insurgences would set up IED’s and once our pinkies or humvee’s where hit our 1st instinct is to step out and look for cover and check if charlie’s or tango’s where around (securing the perimeter). But later the haji’s started planting IED’s around perfect cover positions of an ambush, so when you ran for cover you would step on a pressure plated or trigger operated IED. Nigerian troops need real battlefield experience and better training. May the Soldiers rest in peace.

  • TAWANDA INCOMMUNICADO

There is a high possibility that the Boko-haram had advance knowledge of that movement . There are so many roads in the NE and for only this one to be mined with IED and terrorists waiting in ambush signifies a pre planned and well targeted attack . May the departed find peace .

Who is fooling who here? It was once the retirement of Army senior officers that were loyal to the Jonathan administration or rather partisan in the 2015 election, according to the Army explanation then. Are we not now seeing a scenario of extermination of the gallant officers that were loyal to the Jonathan administration in the fight against Boko Haram, that led to the recovery of most of the territories that were previously under Boko Haram control, which undoubtedly led to the free presidential election in 2015 in all local government areas of the country that ushered the present administration in? I am afraid the authorities of the day to the very top, seems to know more about Boko Haram than they are admitting.

  • marc umeh

Sabotage within the military is a very difficult thing to deal with. It takes just a phone call by an agent in place or a courier to set up a unit. Plans for action come from the top and can be compromised before it get to the target. Even a common cook watching military movement can do great damage.
    I feel for these soldiers.
