Buhari bows to pressure, puts up 2 presidential jets for sale

presidential-jet1

The federal government has advertised the sale of two aircraft in the presidential fleet, in an apparent move to cut down the size of the fleet.

The fleet is believed to hold as much as 10 airplanes, and Mr. Buhari has been criticised for maintaining the large fleet.

Garba Shehu, the president’s senior special assistant on media and publicity, hinted in September that the number of aircraft in the fleet would be reduced.

The Office of the National Security Adviser advertised the sale of two airplanes on Tuesday.

The advert, published on page 35 of Tuesday’s edition of ThisDay Newspaper, said the aircraft up for sale were Falcon 7x and Hawker 4000.

The advertorial detailed the specification of the planes as well as their performance levels, indicating that they were in pretty good condition.

Interested buyers are advised to inspect the Falcon at the presidential wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

On the other hand, the Hawker 4000 can only be inspected at Cessna Zurich Citation Service Centre, Zurich, Switzerland.

The bids are to be quoted in dollars, the notice said.

Mr. Shehu confirmed the planned sale to PREMIUM TIMES.

“This is correct,” Mr. Shehu said. “The federal government has put up an advert for the sale of some of the aircraft on the presidential fleet.”

Sell all and fly Coach. Nigeria is in recession, the sacrifice of getting out of it starts with the president and other politicians. Sell all the aircrafts

    • Toujours Nice

or at most he can keep 2

      • FreeNigeria

No, sell all, it cost too much to maintain. Let him fly economy if he has to travel. let him stay in Abuja. We are in recession, they said it.

        • barry

Buhari brought in change begins with him agenda to deceive us the masses. Why can’t him sale all the planes and start flying by economy?. Real change should start with him. He still enjoy 11 fleets of planes in this recession which costs the whole country futune to maintain. He should also reduce his fleet of cars to. like president Putin of Russia

          • FreeNigeria

Don’t mind him and his wayo change. The Change mantra is for the masses, they exclude themselves. “Animal farm”

          • Wale Adegoke

Even this arrangement is only paying to the gallery and deceptive. At the end they are going to come with excuse that bidders are under pricing the jets. At the cancel the sale arrangement and resume flying the jets.

  • marc umeh

So they needed pressure to do the needful. They leave those planes to depreciate , unmaintained , lying in waste for reason that are hard to fathom.
And they claim they are fighting waste and corruption.

    • haba mallam

Nothing absolutely nothing can be done in this country that can make an Iboman appreciate what the government is doing in Nigeria, except one, that an Iboman become president so that all ibos can get a share in the national cake, that’s their concept of democracy. Allah wadaran ku.

      • Hank

If an lboman becomes President, he will sell Nigeria in his first year in office.

      • marc umeh

It wouldnt be a bad idea for an igboman to become the president of nigeria – a position that has long been denied them. They are nigerians too, Abi?
If you agree that they are nigerians too and you will kill them off if they try to leave but they can never be president because they will get a share of national cake , then you are creating an impossible situation , don’t you think ?

  • kusanagi

10 planes. One needs no pressure because one has no need for 10 planes.

    • Mickey Law

GEJ used those planes without any complains from you

      • kusanagi

        What are you talking about?

        • Mickey Law

Why did GEJ not sell the jets

  • Nkem

Don’t worry. They will soon sell all. It is because they are still selling oil and spending the money anyhow. When oil goes down to $10, when the country can barely recover the cost of production, then they will know the real meaning of recession.

    • haba mallam

and of course you know recession better than them all, mr motor park economist

  • TAWANDA INCOMMUNICADO

Albeit reluctantly, Buhari likes a life of ostentation and hedonism yet they sell us lies about a modest disposition which does not exist.

    • Abdulkadir

He likes the life of the rich yet continue to use cars his predecessor left behind.

      • FreeNigeria

They are better than what we drive. Let him sell all, we’ll pay him mileage for his personal car. we are in recession, sacrifice starts with him, if he truly want the best for Nigeria, let him sell all the cars too.

      • TAWANDA INCOMMUNICADO

The cars are first class, that is what matters, not when they were bought.

  • Mufu Ola

The planes should have been sold immediately he came in.

  • yetundeOnigbogi

Premium times, I’m not sure this is a fair headline. Buhari did not bow to pressure because he made the promise without anyone compelling him. As of the time he made that promise, I’m also not sure he gave an exact time he would do that. Yes, people have taunted him over the delay in fulfilling that promise but to claim he “bowed to pressure” makes your report look mischievous. Maybe a better headline could be “Buhari fulfils a long-expected promise….” or something similar.

    • Tori Osa

was gonna say the same thing

    • dan

The question is, “Why did Buhari have to wait for people to start mounting pressure for him to sell the aircrafts before reluctantly doing it?”. Remember in the early months of his presidency a report came out that he was selling the plans, which he promptly denied and said there was no plan to that effect. For him to bring out 2 out of 11 to sell now after much pressure makes PT headline to be correct. Buhari used the selling of presidential airplanes to campaign, so why is It so difficult for him to sell them now after getting into power? Imagine 2 out of 11 plans, that is reluctantly, PT is 100% right in their headline.

      • yetundeOnigbogi

This is where you guys are missing t. Buhari promised to sell those crafts BUT HE DID NOT GIVE YOU A DATE TO DO THAT. And, as of the last time we checked, he has a four year tenure and he is not even midway yet. You see, the criticisms would have been better justified if the man gave a time frame to do that or if he was approaching the end of his tenure. No matter how you try to cut or slice it, you cannot pre-empt a man’s intentions especially when you never set the agenda for him in the first instance.

    • Kevin Peter

I can bet you that if it is not for the pressure, this administration would have continued in their zigzagging culture with no headway. So many policy reversals of late will confirm to you that the administration has NO CLUE as to how to bring the country out of current predicament.

  • vagabonds in power

Very soon the story will be that, contrary to reports Bingo Buhari had not ordered the immediate disposal of two of the 11 VIP transport aircraft in the presidential fleet–Because this same president Bingo Buhari recently denied knowledge of the sale of his 9 of his golden mam mia planes used in ferrying the first lady of the Fulani Emirate around the globe.

    • Mufu Ola

We don’t need your parochial, illiterate talk now.

    • Tamunu

Bingo Jona bought the jets and 5.6 billion annually on maintenance.

  • PARASITES_in_Power

Can you imagine a Buhari who was not smart enough to pass WAEC High school exams flying on as many of 10 Jets on the presidential fleet? All is courtesy of the wealth of the Niger Delta. You can’t even add Biafra because they started producing oil few years ago long before these Jets were bought. The cost of Governance in Nigeria is criminally high and quite frankly out of the norm, but the block heads and old men in Nigeria like the man from Daura don’t see the cost as high. They accept the proliferation of Local Governments in the North when these LGs are simply sign posts and Cattle Herders and nothing more.

Crooks! Parasites! That is what the North and West are to the resources of the Niger Delta people. If Nigeria is divided into the actual countries that existed before useless Britain invaded, would any emergent country have placed 10 Presidential Jets on its fleet? The answer is an emphatic NO! …So, secession is the way to go. Lets break up this useless Nigeria so that the living can govern the living andnot the reverse as we have it now. Enough of parasitism.

    • otunga

President Buhari is 74yrs, the man has lived a quality and fulfilled life by any standard anywhere in the world, the man’s got no problems for the rest of his life, his children shall not starve, but what about u? You waste valuable time and data writing trash daily, no serious-minded, progressive, focused and busy individual will waste his time doing what you do, that I can stake my life on, my implication if you still don’t get it is that you’re jobless! Bro, they’re people who use this same data you waste to make millions, we have ginger, cashew, sesame seeds, numerous other products you can use your data to connect buyers and sellers and get your commission in dollars, even yahoo boys are making millions and here you are displaying your ignorance and stupidity on a daily basis for free, haba…I feel pained when I read comments on this platform, Nigerians are really wasting their time, complaining, whining, insulting as time goes by, for some chaps this platform is their office, its sad. Wake up guys, opportunities abound for any serious person who wants to move out of poverty, whether you insult Buhari from now till you perish it won’t put food on your table, simply put, you don’t matter, so why not be productive and relevant at least to your family?!

      • Tim Odante

I gues you are the one with problems here young man. Someone has made some very vital and cogent points and all you see and say is that he is insulting Buhari? By the way what is wrong in insulting Buhari if he has done something warranting insults? Yes the fellow was sarcastic in his comments but he made strong points alongside his sarcasms – those strong points as Parasitism (Absolute Dependence of some regions on the resources from Niger Delta and Eastern Nigeria)…the kind of comments many regional champions don’t like to hear. However you fume, his comments have been made and they will make sense to many. We must begin to remove emotions from facts. See the message and not the messenger. And get used to hearing the words, ‘Secession’, ‘breakup’ etc Because it is a matter of rime. Nigeria will not stand as one. Impossicant. OBJ, Buhari, IBB, Abdulsalami and all those ex-Soldiers and their cronies will not be around in 5-10yrs to even Unify their own regions talkless of the whole country.

        • Chukwuka Okoroafor

So you break up a country just because of corruption at the top? What kind of solution is that? You act as if these men created Nigeria and it really belongs to them.

    • Ajayi Ifayemi

And someone like you with all your degrees cannot even afford a plane ticket to travel to Abuja. Too bad, only God decides. Anyone with bad belle can go drown in the ocean or better yet in the lagoon!

    • Mufu Ola

Produce your own certificates & let’s see.

    • Ayo

Because you don’t like Buhari does not give you the right to insult him. Your own block head Jonathan messed up the economy. His wife has millions of stolen dollars from the tax payers

  • marig

Again, PMB waited too long to act. The man is just slow.

    • Kevin Peter

Too Slow worst still on a fast lane!

  • Buhari should be impeached asap. He is a lying cheat. This is what this man told us:
General Muhammadu Buhari speaking in London on Saturday, February 21, 2015.

“One of the major killer of our economy apart from corruption is Waste. Our scarce resources are being plundered away very carelessly and unnecessarily wasted. Let me give an instance, presently, there are more than 6 aircraft in the presidential fleet. What do you call that? Billions of naira is budgeted every year for the maintenance of these aircraft not to talk of operational cost and other expenses”.

“You may want to ask what a Nigerian President is doing with so much aircraft when a Prime Minister of Britain fly around using the same public aircraft like an ordinary Briton. Go and check and compare with that of any developed country in the world, the office of the Nigerian President is a very expensive one in spite our high level of poverty and joblessness. Now, for me, when we come into office, all these waste will be blocked and properly channelled into our economy. We intend for instance, to bring back our National carrier, the Nigerian Airways. We shall do this by bringing all the aircraft in the presidential fleet into the Nigerian airway and within a year increase the fleet into about 20.”

“What is the difference between me and those who elected us to represent them, absolutely nothing. Why should Nigerian President not fly with other Nigerian public? Why do I need to embark on a foreign trip as a president with a huge crowd with public funds? Why do I need to go for foreign medical trip if we cannot make our hospital functional? Why do we need to send our children to school abroad if we cannot developed our university to compete with the foreign ones? Why, and why must our people be servants to the foreigners in the midst of plenty?”

  • haba mallam

you should have disclose where the pressure came from so we can use that pressure point to make the president find chiboks girls, let biafra go and surrender to the avengers.

  • Mfra

Bikering and bitching, it would be awesome if like one poster mentioned all the negative energy wasted here be put to good use by coming up with good productive ideas and how to implement them. After all it’s simple math, the ppl ruling the country are not necessarily the most intelligent, they just happened to be the ones that stood up to be counted. So come on smart ppl, let’s hear your ideas. After all Change starts with me. Maybe we are misquoting the old man, and the deeper meaning is change starts with me. Geddit. Me as in you and I. How can we expect change to come if we aren’t willing to embrace it.
