President Muhammadu Buhari saw the arrest and prosecution Joachim Iroko, a 41 year old trader arrested by the police in Ogun State for naming his dog ‘Buhari,’ as “a ‘laughable incident”, his spokesman, Garba Shehu, said late Thursday.

In a short reaction posted on his Twitter handle, Mr. Shehu said those criticising Mr. Buhari for failing to act on the matter were in “ignorance of the type of person he is.”

“He enjoys cartoons and likes sharing them. The ones he enjoys the most are those that caricature him,” Mr. Shehu said. “People should listen to the real story behind this dog incident and to not waste precious time seeking the hand of the President in a laughable incident!”

Mr. Shehu’s comment was the first time the Buhari administration would comment on the development, which has grabbed the headlines for nearly two weeks and sparked debates about free speech.

It also came a few hours after Mr. Iroko was released from jail, after spending three days behind bars while his family sought funds for his bail bond.

The three days were in addition to the eight days Mr. Iroko spent in a police cell in Sango Otta, Ogun State.

Mr. Iroko was first arrested on August 14 by officers attached to the Sango Otta Division after receiving complaints from a neighbour who said the name he gave his dog was offensive.

Salihu Umar filed complaints against Mr. Iroko with the police, alleging that the ‘Buhari’ name Mr. Iroko gave his dog was the same as his father’s name.

Mr. Iroko was arrested by the police and detained before he was finally charged with a one-count of attempted breach of public peace on August 22.

Bolaji Ojikutu, the Chief Magistrate in charge of the case, granted Mr. Iroko a N50,000 bail after he pleaded not guilty. He was transferred to prisons after failing to immediately raise the funds.

Mr. Iroko met his bail conditions on Wednesday after receiving about N90,000 through fundraising appeal coordinated by a human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong.

He was released around noon on Thursday and he went straight to his residence in Sango-Otta.

Mr. Iroko’s case had continued to generate debates about free speech under the current administration, with many Nigerians saying it was an embarrassment of international magnitude.

The incident also received widespread coverage from the international media.

Eleanor Whitehead, Nigeria correspondent for the Economist, said the development showed that Nigeria had become a “police state.”

Shortly after his release, Mr. Iroko said his arrest and confinement brought untold trauma on his family.

“The President must be having a good laugh over this whole thing,” Mr. Shehu said.

    Buhari is not Erdogan.

    • Senator D

      Expatiate my Oga…Am not following…

      • Tj

People are dying everywhere in Nigeria and these ‘419’ change govt is talking about dog and it’s name. The world must be laughing at us. Shame!!!

      • Apostel

that means, you are not even Senator C!

  • captainafrica

Maybe my sense of humour is failing me. The Nigerian Police Force is trampling on free speech and using taxpayers money to sue in the name of Buhari and this is funny? Ok! it’s already funny to me. I can see the new height of mockery this lawsuit brings, this only highlights the ineptitude of the police hierarchy.

    • Sule Garba

      they rise #50,000.

    • Senator D

No it’s not failing you… It’s just being heightened to expect more “fun”….

  • LadyRosely

Buhari is a disgrace for thinking trampling on human rights is funny. Not it isn’t funny!!

  • Senator D

I Love it when we have the Nigerian Police or Paramilitary boot-licking the government of the day. It’s an indictment that we are yet to understand the separation of power…Nigeria Police is for Nigerians NOT for politicians. They are supposed to protect the right of Nigerians NOT trample upon them. It reminds me of my experience in German when a man out of Xenophobic/racist tendency called the police on me. But to his surprise the Police arrived and listened to both of us and then told him I also have a right to protection from the Police. I just imagined if it were to be in Nigeria…It could best be imagined than experienced!

    • TininiTanana

      Abi!

  • Rollingdollar

The president is laughing his head off, while a poor citizen is locked up in jail for giving his dog a name. And Buhari continues to laugh. Really funny

    • Senator D

Human rights? hahahahahaaaa… You make me laugh… I bet you don’t remember 1984/1985 of Buhari’s reign of terror? Just ask anyone who is in their late thirties upwards….

      • FineBoy

Senator D, u have been one of the unruly people since the 2nd republic.
Some of us wish 84/85 can be brought back to cleans the lands of people like u.

        • Senator D

I hope you are ready boy? Don’t grapple with the strangulation its just beginning…. Brace yourself boy…

        • George

who is suffering the calamities that came with the devil returns now.

Buhari is equal to nothing good and so shall it remain.

  • TininiTanana

    Laugh? That’s ridiculous!

    • Senator D

That’s what you get when people don’t understand HUMAN RIGHTS… It’s going to get more ridiculous don’t shout yet!

  • Dingo

The man ahould have named the Dog after his father or even his father in-law. If indeed he did it out of admiration for PMB, i take it his own father takes a second fiddle in his life.
Next time he decides to give his dog a name, he should remember his father in-law who gave him a wife to love and cherish until “thy kingdom comes” !

    • Senator D

Was the dog named Buhari or Buari?

      • Dingo

Whichsoever. The man’s father should be the most important man in his life, and then of course his father inlaw comes next. Am sure he will not be incarcerated for naming his beloved dog after anyone of the two.

        • Senator D

You correct bro. However what you fail to realise that sometimes the fact that MR Babatunde raped your daughter and also stole from you and every-time that name is mentioned it invokes suspicion inside of you, however that name also can invoke happiness and gratitude anytime it is mentioned before me…So the fact it invokes suspicion or fear of loss in you does not give you the right to assert the name means an offence into law!

        • Rosebud

Is your father more important in your life than Jesus Christ or Mohammed? Or God or Allah? Different strokes for different folks.

          • Dingo

You are absolutely right, it is just that some people do not simply understand that.

        • logmein2nite

The man said President Buhari is his hero not his father. What did he do wrong? Maybe you people have guilty conscience that it is not possible for Buhari to be anybody’s true hero.

          • George

            My brother they know

          • Dingo

Nothing really, the man didnt do anything wrong. He did not claim Buhari to be his father, no. Th point is, if he had considered his own father (or his father inlaw ) as his hero, he should have named his beloved dog after either one. Obviously none of the two is. Could be the reason he relocated from ibo to yoroland.

        • Tj

I an about naming my own dog PMB. Hope I won’t end in police cell too, pls advise me.

          • Senator D

PMB should mean Play-My-Ball for short? Right? Go ahead bro…

    • George

So you are to dictate whom he decide to named DOG.

You are very shameful dog too, tribe of dogs, satan agents

  • Bashir

An early response from the Presidency could have saved the lost of mischief that happened on this topic in the last 2 weeks. Both the Police and Press had acted in the belief that the dog was named after the President as a means to ridicule or denigrate the President

    • Senator D

Can you ask the Police if they have proof of the name inscribed on the dog? Or was based on my word against your word?

  • T-Rex

A leader,or may i say ruler, who enjoys and laughs over his subject being tortured and tormented over a no reasonable cause is actually a sadist!

    • Senator D

He is NOT a sadist… It’s ignorance… And ignorance breeds contempt. The man Buhari is very contemptuous if he does not like what you are or stand for…

      • logmein2nite

How can Buhari be reading cartoons when the Chibok girls are still missing and people are dying everywhere in Nigeria?

        • Senator D

His media aide said so Sir… “He enjoys cartoons and likes sharing them. The ones he enjoys the most are those that caricature him,” Mr. Shehu said…

        • George

Nigerians voted for cartoons lover so be it you just heard it from another Bingo

    • Mahmud A. Bamanga

Please read and understand who is Salihu Umar in the incidence.

      • T-Rex

How does that affect the smile on Buhari’s face?

      • Senator D

Salihu Umar is the man who usurped authority to prosecute someone because he feels the name Buari invokes mockery of his father Alhaji Bingo Buhari… My question to you is then can I usurp authority to prosecute you for calling your dog “Bingo” since bingo is an offensive word to me, mased on my personal reason? Salihu judged that man based on his personal conviction NOT based on any recognised law in Nigeria…Except you tell us here in this forum that the naming of a dog constitutes a nuisance because of your personal parochial judgement…

  • thusspokez

In a short reaction posted on his Twitter handle, Mr. Shehu said those criticising Mr. Buhari for failing to act on the matter were “ignorance of the type of person he is.”

I am not a fan of Buhari, but heads of states have far more important and serious matters to attend to, than micro-managing local issues across a country the size of Nigeria.

Some mumu police office and prosecution decided to escalate a non-offence to a criminal matter, and people are criticising Buhari for not intervening? Should Buhari now intervene in all petty local matters, as in this case, created by law enforcement agencies themselves who don’t seem to know the law.

    • Senator D

Yet he intervened in Pilgrims Travelling Allowance, PTA, by instructing the CBN to sell to Intending Saudi Hajj pilgrims at official rate of 197-naira to a dollar against the prevailing rate then… Are you sure you understand the difference between being petty or being contemptuous?

      • keji

Instruct who?FG just to try to play by the rule for the hajj pigrims bcos they pay when the official price is 197

        • Senator D

“Official price”? Common we are not all certificate forgers here nah!

          • keji

Everybody is entitled to his/her opinion but always think of what your hatred for Buhari could cost our next generation!

          • Senator D

The strength of any democracy is the respect for the rule of law… I never hated Buhari if that’s what you think my anger is your right is ONLY a right if it does not infringe on my right… If it does it becomes oppression… The Salihu Umar whilst exercising his rights erred in infringing on the other man’s right and that is oppression. The police was NOT supposed to take sides…

      • Observer

Mr Senator, shut up, you were quick to read the hajj dollar subsidy, but ignore the news that states that the presidency denied such allegation. That it was a mere rumour.

        • Senator D

Really? A rumour??? I see it was also a rumour about the CBN, FIRS, IMMIGRATION recruitment? We must be a country full of rumour mongers from the PRESS to even you my friend… You so mentally challenged as meningitis must have eaten deep into your FULANI brain!

        • Senator D

Maybe this story too is a RUMOUR… PT becareful of spreading rumours oooooo….

        • thusspokez

          Mr Senator, shut up,

Why don’t you piss off from this thread; others are trying to have a civil discussion here!

        • George

YOU ARE A WONDERFUL MUMU not to know that everything that Bingo has said he denied them all thereafter.

          • Senator D

Including BBOG and stipend for unemployed youths!

      • thusspokez

For the sake of argument, I reluctantly take your word for Buhari’s involvement in the PTA for what it is worth, but– much as I object to government involvement in religious matters — I can’t see how you could place one-man-and-his-dog and thousands of Muslim pilgrims on the same level. The former is local whereas the latter is nationwide. You are making a spurious connection.

        • Senator D

          Does sentiment make something legal?

          • thusspokez

It doesn’t not. And my original comment consists of two arguments. (1) the stµpid actions of the police officer and prosecution — which have led to the escalation of the issue. (2) The subsequent call on Buhari to intervene, follows from this stµpidity and sentimentality.

    • keji

Yes I know u are not his fan but thank you on this very subject

    • progressive

This is the main reason why pdp should for a recourse they are just hearless human being

      • Senator D

Check your spellings… By the way your IDOL Buhari is incompetent and will fail because he is working with the the same faulty constitution they (Fulanis) designed to enslave Nigeria. By this indictment he cannot go outside the extant laws therein stipulated. What goes around comes around…

Your father’s name is Umar and that’s the name you bear not Buhari.

    • Dende Aku

      Editor Premium Times,

What exactly is wrong with VP Yemi Osinbajo?

My concern is different topic. Let me say it. Did this Vice President Yemi Osinbajo go to any school at all?
I don’t think so. He talks rot. Yesterday, he was saying that federal government has saved 1.4 trillion Naira
by not paying fuel subsidy. That is a very illiterate statement. The fuel marketers did not sell petrol at a loss
of 1.4 trillion Naira in Nigeria. It means somebody paid for it, not just somebody, but all Nigerians who bought
fuel from petrol station paid that 1.4 trillion Naira at the newly increased price of 145 Naira per litre. Does
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo expect the people who paid 1.4 trillion Naira to rejoice that President Buhari
became 1.4 trillion Naira richer by not subsidizing petrol price? Somebody close to Vice President Yemi
Osinbajo should whisper into his ear that he doesn’t talk sense and should either shut up or learn logic.

      • chris

obviously u are less enlightened than u may think . the Vps statement implies that unlike in the past that the Fg will give out Millions every month to oil marketers in order to subsidise the price of the product , the Fg has by deregulating the sector , saved 1.4trillion which could have been given out to marketers if the subsidy was still in play . And we know that most of the importers collect these huge sums and end up importing empty barrles or less than the amount required of them while diverting the larger chunk of the money .next time when u

        • George

what is the difference, if FGN pay the marketers and the masses pay the marketers.

FGN is only holding the funds on our behalf, its just like parents and the children, that is why in my area we say show me your family I will tell you how rich you are.

So what did the useless FGN has been doing with the so called saved billions?

May you give birth like children that resemble OSINBAJO-SICKLE CELL LOOKING ANIMAL

          • Senator D

They think we failed SSCE and then forged it at OLUWOLE in Lagos!

        • Dende Aku

@chris: Look, my brother. You don’t tax people with fuel tax and come to tell them
that you who imposed the tax have saved 1.4 trillion Naira. That one is animal talk. What
Osinbajo should say is that he is sorry for the nonsense policy that caused Nigerians to
spend extra 1.4 trillion Naira on petrol for cars and generators. He should then say that
it is this wrong policy that increased general price level and stoked double digit inflation.
In fact it is this wrong policy that led Nigeria into recession with people having less income
to purchase many other things or to do anything else than buy petrol for their generators.
And now that this wrong policy has caused economic recession he should tell us what next.

    • George

the correct names are Salihu Bingo Umar DOG buhari

  • KBE

The president has no fault in this it is the overzealous ogun officers that suppose to mediate in such civil matter and prevented the caricature show of law courts.

    • George

And you believe what you just written if so you will also believe when Tinubu Remi is pregnant that Tinubu is responsible not Deno Meleyi

  • Rommel

Many people are rather disappointed that PMB was not irritated by these infantile exhibition of lunacy from an irresponsible citizen

    • vagabonds in power

Yes oooh!!!!!! the paid hail Hitlers of Bingo Buhari-from the south east of Nigeria—————-So a man can be arrested in Obodo Nigeria, for naming his dog after his hero–Bingo Buhari abi? Yet in this very same country of ours-no one thought it wrong when the First Lady, Aisha Buhari, called a man, and not just any man at that, but the governor of a Ekitit state Oga Fayose, a ‘mad dog’! haba Nigeria!!

Do you see how low our self esteem have descended to-under the luciferic rule of our father from Niger Republic Bingo Buhari—‘?-Nigeria has now fallen to the lowest ebb on the morals of global ladder, by allowing illegal economic migrants from Niger republic- take control of our collective senses.Perhaps our police would like to visit the civilized world in England- to arrest the late English novelist, George Orwell, for naming the pig in his allegorical novel, Animal Farm, after the French Emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte. Why won’t our morals become warped to the extent that we care more for the names we give our domestic animals than for the ongoing human sufferings in Nigeria-under the rule of Bingo Buhari! Why did elders like Professor Wole Soyinka not see anything wrong in calling the wife of a seating President Jonathan then a ‘Hippopotamus’? And Tinubu–tagging the same Jonathan (a drunken Sailor Fisherman-or dumbo ?)-Sadly these Fulani cowhands- from Republic of Niger illegally resident in the South west– were again ordered by Buhari to kill Bingo Buhari the dog–even b4 the man left prison—————-Maybe the Nigerian Police are not even aware–A Nigerian flutist Tee Mac Omatshola- has a dog named Obasanjo (on a more serious note). Should he also prepare for arrest -who know knows for anything can happen in Nigeria-now then blame it on Jonathan–the Ijaw man

Aware Nigeria will never cease to amaze and amuse her global audience—whenever we have the Fulanis from Niger Republic in power–inside aso rock————Separation is the answer–not the antics of Bingo Buhari—–the dog—-from Niger republic——–tormenting———our souls———with his Fulani dance step of old—in Aso rock—————animals

      • Rommel

I ‘m sure you heard the president did not promote the so called police that arrested the man neither did he even ask for his name,we have better things to think about not some overzealous police seeking to bow before power

        • Senator D

He is now an overzealous police man even when the AIG asked for case transfer and then arraignment before a judge? Or is it because it is so laughable that is why your PRESIDO is distancing himself from it???

    • thusspokez

I am sure that in Nazi Germany many including Erwin Rommel would have been irritated. Too bad, Nigeria is not Nazi Germany and Buhari is no Adolf Hitler.

      • Rommel

Reichs Generalfeldmarschall Rommel was a very decent and civilized gentleman, such things as we talk about would have been of amusement to him

        • thusspokez

Generalfeldmarschall Rommel was a very decent and civilized gentleman

I have heard some people say the same about Adolf Hitler, so no surprise there! Nevertheless, Rommel was a member of the Nazi party which killed many Jews and Africans in various concentration camps.

The Fuehrer was an efficient leader

I can’t imagine any Jew would use any Nazi as alias, let alone on Jewish website. When people talk about the ‘Dump and Stµpid’ African, you are what they mean. You are a disgrace to the African race indeed!

I am not going to recommend that Africa get rid of people like as your Fuehrer would have done; I would instead suggest that a re-education/re-orientation camp be created and ‘Dump and Stµpid’ Africans like you dumped there and only return to society after you are have overcomed your stµpidity.

          • Rommel

Your reasoning is warped, there was no pogrom against the negroes in Nazi Germany, they were of insignificant population to attract attention, all other things you heard were propaganda from British to get their African colonies to supply men for war,the Nazi’s however treated captured soldiers of African origin very badly, this was to weaken morale and prevent a continuous supply of fighting men from the colonies,it was a strategy and this led the British to use African soldiers in Burma against the Japs, learn your history very well.

          • thusspokez

Your reasoning is warped, there was no pogrom against…

You are dumb and stµpid, hece you don’t know that African were killed, sent to concetraion camps.

            negroes in Nazi Germany

I am begining to doubt if you are even an African. Use of N-word is outdated and considered offensive — apprently because you are dumb and stµpid, you don’t know this.

was a strategy and this led the British to use African soldiers in Burma against the Japs, learn your history very well.

The UK was fighting many enemies (i.e, Nazi Germany, Mussolini Italy and Emperor Hirohito Japan, Vichy-led France) and at many fronts.

Over 1.2 million (excluding Arabs) African soldiers (not to mention those from the Carribeans and USA) fought in WW2 in various continents. It is ignorance to claim that they were all sent to Burma to fight Japan.

[[ Account of John Henry Smythe of Sierra Leone — pupil in Nazi Germany:

(His teacher gave him Adolf Hitler’s book, Mein Kampf.)“We read what this man was going to do to the blacks if he gets into power. And he attacked the British and Americans for encouraging the blacks to become doctors and lawyers,” Mr Smythe said

“It was a book which would put any black man’s back up and it put mine up”

John Henry Smythe volunteered to join the Royal Air Force, becoming a navigator, flying bombers over Germany. Others took a similar view.

But on the night of 18 November 1943 John Henry Smythe’s plane was shot down over the German city of Mannheim. He spent 18 months in a prisoner of war camp, where the Germans tried to extract intelligence from him.

“You must use some special instruments to navigate your way here,” his interrogator told Mr Smythe.
“He said: ‘I want you to co-operate to get you out of this place.’ I said: ‘I will give you my name and number’. He started to scream at me; became a real Nazi officer.

“He said: ‘You know they are talking about whether to execute you tomorrow or not. Because you, as a black man, should not involve in white man’s war.'”]]

I will not even get irritated if called Nigger because I have never been enslaved so calling me Nigger is stupidity,Barack Obama is not a Nigger so only a slave gets irritated when slavery is mentioned.I suggest you go back to school

          • thusspokez

I will not even get irritated if called Nigger because I have never been enslaved so calling me Nigger is stupidity

Every time you respond to my comment, the harder I am finding words to describe your dumbness and stµpidity.

The idea that you have to be enslaved to be hurt by someone calling you the N-word takes you to higher level of dumbness and stµpidity.

How many people of African origins are enslaved today? And when you walk down the street, do you have a sign on your forehead which reads: “I have never been enslaved”? Or “Call me N-word, I wouldn’t be offended because I am not a slave”? Gosh! what an imþecile!

The greatest problem faced by Africa is not corruption, but dumbness and stµpidity. Even if Africa were able to eliminate corruption, it will still not make much progress until it does something about the many dumb and stµpid people like you.

  • dami

Small time buhari will be asked to intervene in marriage issues…!!

    • Senator D

He intervened in 197-naira to a dollar for Hajj pilgrims… Yet you want to say he is not petty???

      • KBE

Of course hajj is more important to Buhari the bigot than the education and health of the citizens. He angrily said parents that have school fees to pay should buy black market but tourist to Saudi Arabia and Israel can get dollars for less than bank rates. What a misplaced priority.

        • Senator D

Don’t forget his junketing around the globe with his aides collecting estacodes in dollars at the official CBN rates and plunging same into the black market (round-tripping)… His office was actually in the skies until we cried to high heavens before it reduced….

      • blueeyedkitten

he all did for christian pilgrims. infact the christian pilgrims served as a precedence. bigots wey no get sense kawai!

        • Senator D

Atleast you are confirming what your brother called “a rumour” in his post here. Thank you for this comment…

Don’t mind the useless pdp they think we are still in the era of impunity

  • Lanre

Shehu. This comment from you also made me laugh. Buhari was not interested in the case and yet the AIG was demanding for the file? Why don’t you just admit that people with common sense advised you should not ridicule yourselves. You cannot manage an economy and yet you are busy chasing someone do a naming ceremony for his dog. Nigeria can never progress. The country is ruled by retards who inhabit mental enclaves of intellectual poverty and totally destitute of reason.

    • George

Buhari only refuses to intervene because he known very well HE IS A REAL BINGO.

If it is EFCC arrested PDP member for corruption, it will be that Buhari is working from people like you, but now police are involved in shameful acts, Buhari will not be credited with such ignoble action. Nigeria we hail thee

  • Mo

Honestly speaking, why would people expect the president to intervene in such a petty stuff/ issue? Although His handles would have scored a good political point if He has swiftly reprimanded the Police and demanded the release of the poor guy.
It’s so unfortunate that this man (presumably an illiterate) was given this unlawful treatment by the police. He should sue the police for damages and infringement of his right to freedom. For crying out loud, you can name you pet whatever name you like, even after your great grandfather. When does that become a crime in any society and who cares?

    • progressive

It shows that this government has good calibar of people working with him he don’t just intervene on what does not concern him not like what a used to have in the past

  • Senator D

If naming the dog Buari meant an offence to you, in your mental appreciation, it may also be invoking JOY and HAPPINESS in me anytime it’s mentioned because of my association with the name. In law you have to justify reasons beyond legal arguments why certain things MUST be the way you think it should be and NOT be my own way…

    • progressive

Pdp have started with their propaganda media comment why should buhari intervene in such things when there are some critical issues to attend too.

      • Senator D

How does my comment sound PDPish? Or ain’t you following the news for the past weeks? Was PDP responsible for PT publishing the story? Mr Man please am NOT a politician be informed…

Yes oooh!!!!!! So a man can be arrested in Obodo Nigeria, for naming his dog after his hero–Bingo Buhari abi?

Aware Nigeria will never cease to amaze and amuse her global audience—whenever we have the Fulanis from Niger Republic in power–inside aso rock————Separation is the answer–not the antics of Bingo Buhari—–the dog—-from Niger republic——–tormenting———our souls———with his Fulani dance step of old—animals

Citizen was detained by Nigerian police unlawfully, and the president was cracking joke about it. Does anyone need soothsayer to understand the level senility our president has. Oh my dear countrymen, what have we done to deserve this kind of punishment from clueless leader.

@West:Quite surprising if, someone like you possesses brain and normal sensory mechanism to think straight like a human being with your criticism of the president M.Buhari, laughing about the case of the jailed bastard ethnic-maggot that named his damn smelling dog Nigerian elected president M.Buhari,s name.Where do originate from? Some animals in human flesh must be dealt with severely to learn bitter lesson from their idiotic-stupid upbringing as most of your ilk lacked good parental upbringing as often displayed in your utterances.

By your self-styled Doctoral title I see how spiteful your words and writing spew hate and odium… Your misguided sentiment offers us the ample opportunity to read through your mind. By the way your IDOL Buhari is incompetent and will fail because he is working with the the same faulty constitution they (Fulanis) designed to enslave Nigeria. By this indictment he cannot go outside the extant laws therein stipulated. What goes around comes around…

President name is invoved, and the police is acting because of this, to tell the president that police is for you and are loyal. Im view of this president is morally right to halt it just with a word to IG. Intead of laughing at the matter.

    • Senator D

So ONLY your President bears Buhari or Buari? Nadia Buari is in trouble then…

  • Senator D

A man names his DOG BUHARI or BUARI and all POLICE HELL breaks loose… Suppose he names it MOHAMMED they will say its BLASPHEMY and burn down cities and towns… I saw a man wear the jersey GABRIEL JESUS in the just concluded Rio 2016 Olympics he was NOT accused of using ANGEL GABRIEL’s name (who is an ARCH-ANGEL) nor crucified for JESUS (the saviour of the Christians) … It is high time to abolish religion. Because religious sentiments is causing more harm than good in Africa…

  • kayode Olufade

The words from Garba Shehu are very insensitive and not thought over. How can the president laugh at the fact that a citizen spent 3 days in prison for naming a dog after his neighbour’s father? It would’ve been better if he didn’t even talk about this case at all. Can you imagine the trauma the man and his family has gone through? Finding the dog killed, and then his family threatened? The president laughs at all this? If the president actually laugh at this then he is evil and insensitive, if what the spokesman means is that the president finds all this ridiculous and unbelievably inundant with abuse of power by the police force, then he is talking sense

  • Agbe

‘The people perish for lack of vision’.
I just remembered that the of my neighbour’s daughter means female private part in my dialect. I hope to invite the police to charge him to court on Monday before my community will stage a riot for abomination. Happy weekend though!

  • What SOUTH,EAST & WEST must do

The useless and dumb Governors of the South, East and West are to blame for US insult on the other 3 regions in Nigeria. I must first correct the impression that Nigeria is NEVER North – South, it is geographically, culturally and traditionally South, North, West and South as it is with every other country or a semblance (like Nigeria) of it.

Where is the Association of Governors of the South? Where is Eastern Governors Forum? Where is the Western Governors Forum? At best, the only time you here any semblance of regional associations led by the Governors of the South, East and West speaking is when their own personal interests are threatened. i.e., Issues such as Pension, retirement benefits, and immunity. They refuse to throw salvos at clueless Bokohari (Except for Senior Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti state) for his destruction of the economy and his tacit support for the killings of Nigerians in the South, East and West.

CAN also has its fare share of the blame. Since Oritsejafor left office, CAN has become dumb. Comrade Oritsejafor was able to shout and shout directionally. He spoke within and outside the country in very STRONG and DIRECT terms that left no one in doubt that he was serious. So, there was no beheadings and organised killings as we see today. When Sultan said he wrote to ISIS to stop killing people, Oritsejafor took the microphone, thanked Sultan for pleading with ISIS to stop killing BUT he reminded Sultan there and then that his Boko Haram kill 2 times more. I doubt if the current Oluwole head of CAN will have that courage.

    CONDITIONS FOR RECOGNITION
Nigeria is already at war. Only the less discerning will suffer. The only way or so it seems, that the South, East and West can attract a visit to its traditional rulers and the Governors of its regions is to:
    1. Encourage its people to carry out suicide bombings at Mosques, Markets, Schools and
    2. Maintain an army of terrorists in its vast forests and swamps.

This will make US take them serious. What do you think?

    • Enemona

You forgot about North East, North West, Nort Central, South West, South East, South South, North North and in each of these, there also North, East, West, South and then again the combinations and on and on. Is that not more natural to you? I wonder how much more you want to dissect the geographical make up of the country. I wonder why you stopped at that level.

  • Thinker

Buhari has sent express condolences to the families of Italy earthquake but is yet to send special condolences to the failies of victims of yet another Fulani herdsmen attack in Enugu 48hrs ago. Is something not terribly wrong with this Buhari of a guy? Is he really a human being at all? I just don’t understand.

  • Wise Head

Madness. The president was having a good laugh over an incident that greatly traumatised the victim and his family? Incredible

    • Sincere-Voice

My brother, I am as well having a good laugh over this issue. Why won’t the president laugh? The man brought all these trouble to himself. He named his dog after the father of the one he had a fight with, wrote the name on both sides and went ahead to parade the dog in the front of those he had disagreement with.
He didn’t apply wisdom in this situation. By this, he was simply provoking public unrest that if not promptly attended to, it would have lead to lost of lives and destruction of properties. Naming the dog after his neighbour is not a problem at all, but writting the name on both sides and going about parading the dog in the community of those he had disagreement with is where he went wrong.
We should learn to be peaceful and not be trouble producers.

  • AFRICANER

A country that has a president with a spokesman to tell the citizens when he laughs, or when he massacres 1000 of their countrymen, is a useless country.

But somebody obviously does not want to live in a neighbourhood where his father’s name and person is grievously maligned by using it on an animal: a dog. We live in a culture. Those things have meaning. Hope the name-entrepreneur will have picked up a lesson or two – especially that naming si a serious business not to be done lightly. Of course, it is a funny story – how every one-kobo human rights activist with some followers sought to cash in on a fortuitous coincidence. A man did wrong by naming his dog after his neighbour’s father. This is Africa. Those things have meaning. To call a person a dog has imputations which are not lost on anybody. The Criminal Code establishes as a defence a proportionate assault committed in defence of a close relation insulted. To report to the Police instead of assaulting anoother citizen who seriously insulted your father is a commendable gesture. Where the context is an Igbo man in a Yoruba community insulting an elder of an Hausa settlement that way – especially in this season of violent Cattle Rearers and Boko Haram – proactive police intervention means we have a somewhat happy ending. The accused gets his day in court for a slur capable of causing breach of public order. Human rights activists get their fad object to use to market for funders abroad. However it is not wrong if the opportunity is lost to discuss the most important precipitate of the event: how do we encourage more citizens to go to Police instead of resorting to fatal violence when they feel themselves slighted within the cultural milieu of their everyday lives.
