Buhari promises 10,000 megawatts of electricity

IMG_20160321_185923

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday said his administration has set a target of delivering 10,000 megawatts of electricity generation in the next three years.

The president, who stated this while addressing the National Economic Council retreat held at the State House, Abuja, said this year alone the administration would add 2000 megawatts to the national grid.

Mr. Buhari assumed office on May 29 last year.

He said, “Nigerians’ favourite talking point and butt of jokes is the power situation in our country. But, ladies and gentlemen, it is no longer a laughing matter. We must and by the grace of God we will put things right.

“In the three years left for this administration we have given ourselves the target of ten thousand megawatts distributable power. In 2016 alone, we intend to add two thousand megawatts to the national grid.”

Mr. Buhari said the power sector had been privatised but admitted that that it had yet to show any improvement in the quality of service.

According to him, the common public complaints are constant power cuts destroying economic activity and affecting quality of life; high electricity bills despite power cuts; low supply of gas to power plants due to vandalization by terrorists; and obsolete power distribution equipment such as transformers.

Other complaints, he stated, are power fluctuations, which damage manufacturing equipment and household appliances; and low voltage which cannot run industrial machinery.

The federal government had two weeks ago apologised to Nigerians for the hardship and inconveniences power outage had caused them.

A statement by the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, said efforts were being made to rectify the situation and ensure a gradual improvement in the power situation.

“There will be a decent improvement in the power situation from this weekend, thanks to ongoing remedial efforts that will double the current power supply to 4,000WM,” he said.

“Getting back to the 5,074MW all-time high that was reached earlier will take a few more weeks.”

The government’s apology came three weeks after power supply dropped to a meagre 2,800 megawatts, the lowest in nearly a year.

A few days later, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, announced that it had reached a new peak of 4,387 MW.

It said the recovery followed the successful repair work on the damaged gas supply facility discovered earlier in the week.

In September last year, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said the federal government planned to distribute 6,000 megawatts of electricity in the country by the first quarter of 2016.

He stated this at Kaleta in the Republic of Guinea, at the inauguration of a 240 MW hydro-power plant.

While campaigning for the presidential election last year, the All Progressives Congress, on which ticket Mr, Buhari contested, promised to expand electricity generation and distribution to 40,000 MW between four and eight years.

According to the party’s manifesto, “The APC Government shall vigorously pursue the expansion of electricity generation and distribution of up to 40,000 megawatts in four to eight years.

“The party will also work assiduously at making power available from renewable energy sources such as coal, solar, hydro, wind and biomass for domestic and industrial use, wherever these prove viable.”

The APC said power remained at the centre-point of development process, adding that all other indices of development anchor on it.

“The failure to make power supply efficient has impacted negatively on the economy. It has made the cost of production and business high and has invariably raised the cost of agricultural produce and other finished goods and services thereby thwarting the growth of our economy,” it said.

“The crisis in the power sector is one of the major causes of the present collapse of the industrial sector and the inability of small scale industries to thrive. To kick-start industrial growth in the country, stable and affordable power supply is an absolute necessity.”

Nigeria’s economy has stopped working, Says Nigeria Labor Congress

“We encourage the BUHARI government to come up with the
economic summit even though we are not part of it, we have not been invited.
Nigeria needs a very proactive economic policy now that will address the woes
of the economy. We are in the worst in terms of economic experiences. We are
not in good terms in terms of our economy at all. It had never been this bad
except during the civil war. So we hope that the government would take steps
    to remedy the situation.”

From 40,000 MW to 10,000, yet another election promise 419.

      40,000 in 4 – 8 years.
What is fraudulent in that? If they can put in enough effort to get it to 10,000 over the next 3 years, I will be confident enough to give them 4 more years to go for an extra 30,000.

      • Ed

Who told you the promise of 40,000MW was to be achieved after 8 years? na wa 4 una ooo and the way you people go about defending these politicians, when Buhari was making campaign promises did he tell us he was going to run for a second term?. abegi make i hear word

    EDITOR SIR,

Please help me beg Buhari that we are tired of future promise. There is no light for ten days now in our area.
No water and no petrol. Let us solve the problem of today first. All this talk about 10,000 megawatts in future
makes no sense if we are in darkness today. Let us solve today’s problem first, i beg you. How can we live
in a country in darkness for ten days? What sort of change is that? Instead of Buhari to solve the problem
of today he wants to solve the problem of ten years’ time. That is rubbish.

    What did Buhari do since
he was sworn in on 29th May, 2015. He was flying in aeroplane all over the place like small boy who
wants to enjoy himself. He started deceiving himself that he was doing foreign policy. Does a wise
man do foreign policy in the dark – without electricity? Does a wise man do foreign policy when his
country does not have water? On top of that there is no petrol at the fuel station too? This Buhari
is not it. He doesn’t know anything. Just like dunce!

Israel needs to step into Northern Nigeria and save many lives as they are currently doing in Yemen. Saudi Ariabia cannot help to save lives anywhere outside their kingdom. Outside all they do is to build mosques and spread terrorism. Some of the last remaining Jews in war-torn Yemen have been brought to Israel in a secret mission. The Jewish Agency, which is responsible for Jewish immigration to Israel, said 19 people had arrived in recent days, among them a rabbi carrying a 500-year-old Torah scroll. The non-profit organisation said some 50 Jews had chosen to stay in Yemen. Since 1948, 51,000 Jews have emigrated to Israel from Yemen, which has one of the world’s oldest Jewish communities. Almost all of them were brought to Israel as part of Operation Magic Carpet in 1949 and 1950. In recent years, some 200 Jews have left as attacks against the Jewish community have increased and the country has descended into war.

    • Julius

Havent you read the horrible discriminatory policies toward the dark skin Ethiopian Jews in Israel ? They wont even let them donate blood at the hospital. Why should they come and save lives in Nigeria ? Shouldnt that be the job of the Nigerian government ? Did you invite them when BK took some territories from the country ?

      • Otile

Definitely, people’s lives in Northern Nigeria means nothing to you. The tribalist Buhari only protects his Fulani tribesmen or his fellow Sunnis. Israel is known to help people under extermination anywhere in the world, and will do a lot for needy Northerners. We cannot entrust the lives of non Fulanis and non Sunnis into the hands of Sunni Mohamed Buhari for obvious reasons. Despite what you allege as horrible discriminatory policies the Ethiopian Jews have not demanded to go back to Ethiopia. On the contrary their lives are better in the Holy Land than at the hands of their cruel tormentors in the Horn of Africa.

        • Buhari4Ever

You are always a goat. Leave the North and face the killings in the SS and SE.

          • Otile

Ethiopian Jews have demanded to go back home but, have no homes to go back to and the Israelis government refused to help them, Otile, once again try to understand things before you render an opinion or making a flat out statement about issues. I dont believe in promises, especially about electricity. Just do the best you can do and at least make a difference. Clearly there is a lot of sabotage of power installations going on. and this isnt exactly new, its been ongoing for decades now. The problem with these promises is that we never take into account the sabotage factor and how we will overcome it. i believe its its for this same reason GEJ didnt succeed in changing our power generation much. He by the way promised 24/7 electricity in four years. We dont need promises anymore, we need action

that, Muhamadu Buhari came into this job with an empty head and without even a hazy idea

How Wole Soyinka expected ‘a drop-out’ from secondary school to lead reforms is baffling.
Soyinka wasn’t thinking properly when he called on Nigerians to come out quickly and lend

to come out quickly to do any such thing.

set store by; and for whom he brought his own judgment into serious question. I hope

Mohammadu Buhari, I strongly advise you to promise Nigerians improved power supply rather than specific megawatts. You will get messed up at intervals to keep being apologetic on deficit against absolute figure most of the time. Nigerians are not interested in your figures but the number of hours a day they have access to power and they judge performance by that. It is only when it gets to 24/7 that the sound of Halleluyah would rent the air. Saboteurs are lurking around to ensure the 10,000 megawatts target is never met and have ever remained winners in the last 30 years as agents of darkness and generator merchants.

    • A Aminu

Yes I quite agree with you. A promise of improved power is much safer promise that being specific. OBJ promised specifics and together with late Bola Ige of blessed memory failed. He apologized to Nigerians. It is good we appreciate economic and political saboteurs are in the works and they sabotage any efforts the government does to fulfill these promises. But when the clock and pocket and wrist watch was invented, it would have been nonsensical if it had morning, afternoon, evening, and midnight. Neither would it be useful if it had split the day into 4 or 12 hour. It becomes more useful when the day was split to 24 hours, and idea of hour, minutes, and seconds was introduced. All in a bid to be more specific. PMB is being specific when he target 4,000. We just hold him to his specific promise and see how he goes about the fulfilling that promise.

running. He first wanted to fly in presidential jet and eat state dinner. He did that for five months and lost valuable time. When he woke up from slumber time has passed, Nigerians have become too angry to be placated. That’s why I can say President Buhari failed by himself. Nobody made him to fail. He failed all by himself. It is so unfortunate that Buhari has stained all members of the APC party with his own incompetence. Nigerians will now think twice before voting for APC again. Lai Muhammed, the Information Minister, made APC look worse. He just came into Information office and started telling lies to the country. Everyday Lai Muhammed was telling big lies. Nigerians then became more furious at Buhari’s government and feel deceived and duped. APC party could be made to suffer for all this.

Another changi! If you promised 40000 in 8 years and is now committing to 10000 in 4 years , it means the 40000 was just a fluke. Can someone just apologise for this lack of integrity please

    • Musbau Hamzat

It is possible as there is no limit to the generation in a year. In one single year, 20,000 can be generated. It is not a seed that you will be expecting it to grow b4 planting another one. If many private refineries can be brought up, and the gas supply is increased and a lot of power plant is constructed by both government and private sector and source of energy, we not rely only on gas, it is very possible. Qatar generate 5000 in less than year in addition to what they have b4. They have the capacity to generate 20,000 in a year but base on plan and population.

      • GbemigaO

Chief. You are right . However , it does not happen in a day except through proper planning and execution. OBJ wasted years when turbines were ready but no gas pipelines. Do you candidly see any forward planning to deliver 40000 in 8 years ?

Kudos to PMB for doing a great job in making sure that we get what is required of us and we get there, Nigeria will surely enjoy pmb as soon as the senate approve the budget. Change is here and we shall see it soon

Nigeria is a huge joke. Colossal joke! How can the academically challenged like Buhari be proposing an power?
    Does this make sense?.

A research carried out amongst all presidents in the world reveals that Nigeria’s Buhari is one of the least educated presidents in the world and certainly the least educated in Africa. This is a shame. No wonder we are like this. No water. No power. No security. No fuel. Nothing!

Stay calm, you will sing different song, PMB will shame you.

President Buhari has thrown a worthy challenge to our professionals in the power, housing and agricultural sectors. Let all stakeholders do their bit for the actualisation of these plans and targets.

Great job PMB for the visionary plan. You will surely bring the needed CHANGE to Nigeria.

  • 2012Nic_2000

Am worried about PMB putting his mouth in motion before his brain is engaged into gear. Let him not deny this again at the end of three years. You don’t make pronouncements when you don’t have articulated plans and resources to achieve such plans and that accounts for reversal of many of apc’s promises. They are the habit of digging a foundation when they’ve not moulded blocks nor have money to buy already moulded ones. 21st century leaders don’t behave this way.
