EFCC boss, Magu, slams lawyers, journalists; says SANs receive stolen funds

EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu
EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu

The acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, on Tuesday took a swipe at lawyers and journalists in Nigeria, saying they connive with criminals to subvert the course of justice and frustrate war against corruption.

Delivering a speech at a rally organised by a coalition of civil society groups, in Abuja, Mr. Magu said lawyers receive part of the stolen public funds to fight the EFCC, sabotage and delay justice.

“One of the big challenges we have in the effective prosecution of the war on corruption, is that of very senior lawyers who Nigeria has been very kind to: They who went to good schools here, when Nigeria was good, many of them, on government scholarship; they who Nigeria has given so much opportunity.

“When we have corruption cases, cases of people who have stolen food from the mouths of our children; when we have cases of people who have stolen money meant to build hospitals and buy drugs; when we have cases of people who have stolen all the money meant to buy guns for our soldiers to fight Boko Haram, when we have all these cases of wicked people who have stolen Nigeria’s money, they run to these same senior lawyers, give them part of the stolen money and mobilise them to fight us, to delay us in court and to deny Nigerians of justice. These are the people who do not want justice for the common man.

“The other day, 34 Senior Advocates of Nigeria fought against only one small EFCC lawyer in court and he defeated all of them! What we are doing today is not by our power, it is the power of the Nigerian people and the power of God behind us!

“Corrupt people hire journalists to abuse us every day. They say we are not doing the work according to the law. But, that is not true.

“There is no agency that follows the law more than EFCC. None. Before we arrest you, or seize your property or do anything to you, we check the law, we go to court and get court order. That is why we are winning; that is why we are defeating them every day.

“We want the Nigerian people to continue to support us, continue to support Mr. President’s war on corruption.

“We have many corruption cases in court. We are getting them every day from everywhere and we are recovering stolen money and taking corrupt people to court.

“The money we have recovered and the money we are going to get back from them – billions and billions of naira – is being paid back to government and will be used to do what it was originally meant for – to build hospitals, send our children to school, build roads and railways, create employment and defend our country.

“We have no other country than Nigeria. This war is the war of the people.

“Apart from the fear of God, we have no other fear. Apart from the interest of Nigeria, we have no other interest.

“And apart from the Rule of Law, we have no other rule guiding the work we are doing today. The days of impunity are over.

“Victory is certain for the common man! Aluta continua!” he added.

      @ailandaaa:disqus

At this rate of deepening rot in Nigeria – going on without let and now in a
driftless motion, Muhamadu Buhari is a one-term president, without a doubt.
He’s too dull and incompetent to be re-elected for any further term in office.
APC party will be swept off with Buhari as undesirables. The failure of APC
party in government is now getting close to a national scandal.

      APC presently limps on crutches
which some hungry journalists and their criminal counterparts owning websites
provide to hold the APC party back from falling into pieces. But they do so
with obvious lies to mortgage their own individual reputation as journalists or
      even as bloggers.

For a total mess of porridge, these assorted rapscallions; self-described
as journalists, go so far to suggest falsehoods into the minds of the populace
to then mislead Nigerians into mistaking lethargy for strategy. But now that the
wheels have fallen off the APC wagons, after the party presented a national
budget of CHANGE – which turned out to be a well-organized conspiracy to steal
the treasury, the APC defenders run away, unable to further defend gross infamy.

GOODLUCK JONATHAN AND HIS GANG OF LOOTERS AND THIEVES WILL PAY VERY DEARLY FOR THEIR CRIMES AGAINST NIGERIA AND HUMANITY. END OF STORY.

Cheap propaganda! I guess arresting people before EFCC even start investigations into their case is this man and Buhari’s definition of “rule of law”. I don’t blame this man, rather I blame most Nigerians who could easily be brainwashed with cheap propaganda as those posted above. Yeye dey smell.

  • Inner Bar

Anyone with good sense will know that lawyers who refuse to apply for this crass
S.A.N chieftaincy are the wise ones. A man of prudence does not degrade himself
to apply to be conferred with a meaningless title en route a life of thefts.

A good few of these morally wretched and so-called
S.A.N wearers cannot speak a correct sentence in English. The remainder just scowl
and howl in ignorance and delusively believe themselves to be in the sport of lawyering.

  • dudu

    Thumbs up for Magu!

  • Angry Niaja

Magu has spoken the truth, these so called SAN’s are part of the problem, they are constantly asking for adjournments to prolong the cases.

    • zygote

The SANs are not the problem, the problem are the judges. If a SAN collects 1billion Niara and the Judges give a judgment based on facts, criminals will stop spending money on SANs. In fact, they collect the money knowing they will share same with the judges and get a favorable judgement. This is why up till now nobody is convicted over Dasukigate and they may not get a conviction until president realises his problem is not the corrupt individuals but the judiciary.

      • Pointitout

Zygote the fact of the matter is that issues are not decided on facts on ground but by technicalities. Someone can chop off your head in public and get away with it if a witness does not correctly identify the type of machete he used. It is rubbish but that is the law and those filthy SANs exploit it. We need to pIug the loopholes in our laws and strengthen the institutions that are responsible for enforcing the laws. I do not think that one needs further evidence of corruption than the un-quantifiable properties a supposed salaried man has acquired either his name or in the name(s) of the wive(s) and children who barely did any job. The judges are the most gullible human beings alive. The say “reasonable doubt”. Rubbish! Every doubt has a good reason. The legislators themselves are very reluctant to plug the lacunae because it would be tantamount to sending themselves to jail. Remember that place is a hiding place for retired governors and minister and directors. They have enough money to burn down EFCC….God forbid. Wait for the rejoinder from the press tomorrow. They will swear and curse but who cares? Magu said it as it is.

        • Daniel

We cannot possibly have all the laws in a book. There is something called precedents. There is something called the morality of society. There is something called conscience. And there is something patriotism.

We have a morally decadent society.

  • JSA1

DESPIPTE ALL THESE EVIL OF CORRUPTION PDP BROUGHT ON NIGERIANS THAT HAS ALMOST KILLED NIGERIA BEFORE GOD INTERVENED WITH THE ELECTION OF PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI THE SHAMELESS PDP ARE NOW SAYING THAT THEY WANT TO TAKE OVER 2019. GOD WILL NOT ALLOW THEM EVEN IF THE PRESENT CJN IS ALLOWED TO STAY IN OFFICE TILL 2019. GOD HAS REJECTED PDP LONG BEFORE 2015 AND SO SHALL IT BE FOR A LONG TIME. AMEN

  • Layo

God is with you. People like us, who hate the goats eating our yams are praying for you. Laura continua, Victoria asserta. Why do they remember the rule of law when their yansh is opened, do they check the rule of law before stealing?

  • Omoba1

34 SANs defending a corrupt case. Where is their conscience. This is a crime against the nation and 34 SANs want a slice of it. I know the accused should be defended, but 34 SANs is beyond reasonable understanding

    • Julius

Look at what Saraki was trying to do with all the SANs that money can buy.. See how many of the so called Senators behind him in court !. Its sickening ! They all knew he is a thief but, so are they and the Judges in their pocket until now. Lets hope this is the start of a good thing for the country.

  • olat

“One of the big challenges we have in the effective prosecution of the war on corruption is that of very senior lawyers
who Nigeria has been very kind to:

U nail it, not only senior lawyers, head of institutions, Governors, Ministers, Presidents.
Is there any of our presidents Nigeria wasn’t kind to when he was born and gave free education?
Is there any of our current and previous Governors not fed and educated freely by d kindness in Nigeria?
Is there any of our current and previous higher institution heads Nigeria never gave free education and meals?
D solution to our problems is not far from where we started d Journey.

    • zygote

Buhari made the worse mistake by arresting Dasuki without address the judiciary first. The first people that should have gone on trial would have been judges and SANs before all these corruption cases that will last for decades without resolution.

      • Abiboss

You are right. However, Dasuki would have run away. Nigeria needs laws that will block those loopholes that prevent EFCC from going after looters.

      • Peter

You mean that unless the lawyers handpicked and appointed by Buhari are in charge of the judiciary, there will be no justice, and the accused persons should be given a jungle or military justice at the nod of Buhari. To you, Buhari should enact military decree, and set up special panel headed by former northern generals to take over the functions of the judiciary so that his war on corruption will be won.

        • Daniel

We need military decrees. Democracy is useless to Nigeria. Ours is special case of corruption, so it should be addressed accordingly.

      • Peter_Edo

did you read the article and have you been following current events?
        1. Magu just said they have been following the rule of law in all cases.
        2. Dasuki was arrested by DSS, given bail, and then rearrested by EFCC and not granted bail yet.
        3. Dasuki has taken the FG to court for “supposedly disobeying court order” already and the case was quashed. proving that the FG was right and has been right in its course of action in detaining dasuki.

MAGU: We are 100% behind you. As you rightfully stated, there is no fear but the fear of God. Nothing good comes without challenges. We shall overcome. Nigeria is moving on up again!

  • Ebaah Odibo

My dear Magu, EFCC fighting corruption in Nigeria is like David fighting Goliath. Only the God that was behind David was pure and cannot possibly be corrupt. Unfortunately, your main backer, your C-in-C, is himself a product of corruption. And he sent you to fight his backers and benefactors! It is dicey my brother. Let Almighty God be your only hope, not any Naija politician, and that includes PMB. You see all Naija politicians, APC, PDP or whatever acronym, Christians, Muslims are all Corrupt. I don’t envy you Magu!

    • umolu

Mr Magu, you are doing a great job. Good willed Nigerians will continue to support you in this noble fight. Write your name in gold and for eternity and let posterity judge you. The Germans have a proverb that an open door could tempt even a saint. Stay on course, be steadfast. Who knows; maybe after PMB,you might be next. Nigerians like names and figures. Try to tell us from whom and by how much these looted funds are gotten. So long. Peace.

    • Burbank

      I don’t envy you either.

“Switzerland to return $380m Abacha loot”. The timing of the action of the Swiss authorities was particularly instructive as we go into the election. Buhari whose twin campaign sloganeering messages have been that he will fight corruption and end Boko Haram has consistently denied that Abacha stole Nigeria’s money. According to him, Abacha neither stole nor looted the country’s treasury. He described the allegations of looting against Abacha as “baseless”, because according to him, “ten years after Abacha, those allegations remain unproven because of lack of facts”. This was despite the fact that hundreds of millions of dollars had in well publicised reports been returned to Nigeria as part of the Abacha loot. Now that Switzerland is set to return another tranche of $380m, does Buhari still stand by his statement that the allegations or accusations against Abacha are “baseless” and not supported by “facts”? Switzerland had earlier returned more than $700m that the late Abacha hid in Swiss accounts and is now set to return another $380 million stolen by the dictator. The question for Magu head of the Eye service Agency of Buhari–is was it Lawyers who said Abacha did not steal a dime from the oil revenue base of the SS—or Buhari?

You will get support when you do it right without bitterness. Where did the law said you should manhandle/ throw suspect into the van?
There is need to look into your past too.
Whatever you sow you will reap same.
You dont need to beg Nigerians to support you.

The law says it is illegal for a suspect to resist arrest. When a suspect resists arrest,s/he leaves the law enforcement with no other option than coercion ,which is very legal.

  • musa aliero

Even Pablo Escobar the famous drug lord had lawyers in the United States defending him! U can’t expect lawyers not to do their jobs! Instead of accusing lawyers of frustrating you, do better research than them! Gather more evidence than them that will overthrow anything that they throw at you! The problem with EFCC is that they r too lazy to carry out forensic and in-depth research and evidence that will be used to easily nail corrupt people! Talented lawyers will explore such loop holes because it is their duty in law to defend their client to the last! Which is not a crime! Rather than accuse them(lawyers) do proper research and investigations!
