Despite efforts and assurances by the Federal Government that it would rescue the abducted Chobok girls alive, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has raised doubts on their possible return.

Mr Obasanjo, who spoke at an event organized by the Staff Club of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, on Friday, said anyone saying the girls would return was simply telling lies.

The programme which was held at the open arena of the staff club, was themed, “An Evening with Obasanjo.”

Mr. Obasanjo blamed former President Goodluck Jonathan for trivializing the distress call to rescue the girls on the day they were captured.

“The former president heard about the kidnap 8am in the morning of the abduction but failed to act until 72 hours later and by then it was too late,” Mr. Obasanjo stated.

“Anyone saying they(Chibok girls) will return is telling lies, maybe some of them will return to tell their story.”

According to him, the failure of the Peoples Democratic Party in the last presidential election is a blessing to Nigeria.

“We tried, but with Jonathan, it was best that PDP should fail to save Nigeria,” Mr. Obasanjo said.

He pointed out that one of the low points of the Jonathan administration was his treatment of issues of importance as politics, particularly that of Boko Haram.

On power generation, Mr Obasajo said there had been no meaningful improvements since he left office.

“Power is still the same way I left it in 2007, railway is same way and other sectors, it was best that PDP stopped ruling us,” he said.

“It was a thing of joy to me that the earlier declaration of 50 years governance for PDP did not come to pass.”

Mr Obasanjo, who was in company with the Vice-chancellor of the university, Professor Fadipe and other notable personalities, also took out time to take a swipe at Professor Wole Soyinka whom he described as “an amateur politician.”

“Wole Soyinka is a patriotic Nigerian, he is a great man but his opinion regarding politics, he always misses it, I have nothing against him,” he said.

Mr. Obasanjo also justified some of the decisions he took on education, saying he would take the same decisions if he had another chance.

“I have no regrets regarding the decisions I took in terms of education including removing free food in our institutions. We had 53 institutions when I came in 1999 but as at the time I left we had 150 institutions,” Mr Obasanjo explained.

“I prefer to have all persons in schools than to have some few persons simply enjoying free food.”

He also stated that he never had a godfather when he contested for president, admonishing young politicians to shun godfatherism and be ready to face hard times in politics.

1.OBJ’s godfather when he contested the Presidential elections was, of course, the Late K. O. Abiola’s sudden death which imposed OBJ’s candidature ON sympathetic Nigerians as a compensation to the Yoruba race. Pure and simple.

    2. I believe it was the immediate responsibility of the State Governor, being the Chief Security Officer for the well being of the Chibok girls, together with the Inspector of Police, to have produced the first response to the abduction of the Chibok girls by giving immediate chase at 8 a.m., or else every kidnapping incident in a given State would have to wait for Mr President, and since the Chibok girls, and any way the Chibok girls, by any stretch of the imagination, can not be said to be more important or special than an Udofia who goes missing in Akwa Ibom state, for example. Human being na human beingnoooo. How ridiculous, indeed, is the criticism!

    3. So, what OBJ is saying is that it was fraudulent for GMB to have used assurances of the return of the Chibock girls as one campaign strategy for his Presidential ambition!

Jonathan almost rejected offer to run with Yar’Adua Ahmadu Ali

      BY HENRY UMORU

Vanguard Online Edition, Lagos. Sunday, June 5, 2011 In News

FORMER National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dr. Ahmadu Ali disclosed yesterday that late President Umaru Yar’Adua personally picked President Goodluck Jonathan as his running mate ahead of the 2007 polls without the prompting of any of the leaders of the party.

The party boss also said Jonathan almost rejected the offer to run with Yar’Adua.

Ali spoke against the backdrop that former President Olusegun Obasanjo was responsible for the emergence of Jonathan then as vice president.

The former PDP national chairman was speaking yesterday at the second day of the two-day retreat for the president, governors and National Assembly memberselect. The programme, held under the theme, ’ Legislative and Executive Branch Collaboration: A new Synergy for National Transformation”, was organised by the PDP in collaboration with the Peoples Democratic Institute, PDI, at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

Ali, reacting to a comment by the Publisher, Editor- In-Chief of THISDAY Newspapers, Nduka Obaigbena, that the British High Commissioner told him PDP shortlisted former Governors James Ibori, Peter Odili and Jonathan for the slot, however, explained to the audience that the rumour peddled by the diplomat was not correct against the backdrop that there was no time the party or its leaders drew up any list of possible running mate for Yar’Adua.

“It is not true that three people were in consideration for vice president and Ibori was never considered”, he stated.

The former PDP chairman noted that while the PDP governors were meeting in the house of former Special Assistant to Obasanjo, Andy Uba, now a senator-elect deliberating on who to push forward for the slot, Obasanjo, Chief Tony Anenih and himself (Ali) summoned Yar’Adua to read his acceptance speech and inform them of who he was picking as his running mate.

“Chief Tony Anenih, myself and Obasanjo were the only three people in the basement and we forced the late president to read his acceptance speech. He resisted and I am the only one keeping a copy of that speech which he never read. Goodluck Jonathan was nominated single-handedly by Umaru Musa Yar’Adua as his running mate before me, Chief Anenih and Obasanjo. We insisted he must tell us who his running mate was.

Nigerians will become fully evolved people when they begin to show visceral hatred for ignorance,
hypocrisy and thefts; and feel insulted to be invited as academicians and professors to hear the
illogical and incoherent thoughts of a barely educated rustic fellow with no pedigree, who feels
qualified after a coup d’etat to declare himself a statesman – without any ability to understand
economics, law and political science – the three indispensable requirements for diplomacy.

    DEAR SIR,

APC party Versus the Supreme Court of Nigeria

Chief John Oyegun – the APC party Chairman –
struggled clumsily to dial back when he was called out for threatening certain
punishment for Supreme Court Justices for overriding verdicts awarded in lower
courts to APC in the Delta, Abia, Akwa-Ibom and Rivers state governorship elections.

But President Buhari – his party member – is man enough to own up to having uttered
this same threat a few days earlier in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. “The judiciary is my headache
    in this anti-corruption war”,
President Buhari said. “We cannot succeed in this fight against
corruption without carrying out reforms in the judiciary
    ”.

Reforms could however mean anything; from sackings to arrests.
“Henceforth all corrupt Judges will face trial and be jailed”, said
the attorney-general, Mr. Malami, to echo Buhari’s standpoint. And so the
stage is set for a big fight between the APC ruling party and the Supreme Court
of Nigeria. What can Buhari do?

By law, Buhari can’t sack or suspend a Supreme
Court Judge. So, what’s all his huffing and puffing about? All that President Buhari
can do is to investigate a targeted Judge for corruption and order his or her arrest
for trial. But even that strong-arm tactic needs very strong evidence to do.

If Obasanjo picked Yar’Adua who now picked Jonathan, it means Jonathan was too small for Obasanjo to waste his time on. With all the greed and deceitful attitude of Jonathan, do you genuinely think he will reject a local government chairmanship position? He lacks confidence and is too timid to compete hence he ‘almost rejected’ slogan. On the other hand that shows Jonathan has never had an independent mind of his own.

-The president addressed Nigerians in London on the state of the economy

President Muhammadu Buhari has wondered why he came into government at this period of economic challenges but expressed optimism in the success of the administration with God’s help.

The Punch reports that the president said this on Friday, February 5 when he was addressing the members of the Nigerian community in the United Kingdom in London.

President Buhari said he always wondered why oil, which used to sell for over $140 per barrel, would reduce to $30 per barrel during his time as president and why he wasn’t in charge when the country was financially buoyant. He said he however continue to pray to God to be merciful to the over 170 million Nigerians.
