EXCLUSIVE: Why we transferred Father Mbaka — Catholic Church

PIC. 7. REV. FR. EJIKE MBAKA VISITS PRESIDENT BUHARI IN ABUJA

The Catholic Church on Monday clarified the recent transfer of Father Ejike Mbaka, saying the controversial priest was merely being sent to where he would be more useful to the church.

In its first reaction since the controversy over the transfer broke, the church church said the posting was not meant to be punitive.

In an exclusive interview with PREMIUM TIMES Monday, the Secretary-General of the Catholic Secretar‎iat of Nigeria, Reverend Father Ralph Madu said transfer of priests within the catholic church is a “normal church procedure.”

“Mbaka’s own is not an exception,” Mr. Madu said. “The Bishop has the right to post any priest wherever he feels his service would be more useful to the church.”

Public criticisms had greeted the Enugu Diocese’s recent decision to transfer Mr. Mbaka out of Christ the King Parish‎, GRA, where he had served for over a decade and had established a popular prayer ministry, the Adoration Prayer Ministry.

Mr. Mbaka is to resume immediately at his new post at the Our Lady Parish, Emene.

The priest, who is as fiery as he is controversial, had described his ‎re-posting by the church as a “calculated move” to make him suffer.

“I know we are going to suffer within now and few months to come,” the priest said. I am going to suffer and suffer; I know that. I’m going to suffer because I have no place to put my head. I am going to suffer because I have no place to keep the Adoration Ministry’s assets. I know I’m going to suffer.”

On Sunday, the South-East zone of the All Progressives Congress alleged that Bishop Callistus Onaga was manipulated by external forces into effecting Mr. Mbaka’s transfer.

“As a party, we have watched with concern and trepidation the criticism, the attack, assault and unpleasant comments hurled against Fr. Mbaka since he providentially prophesied that President Buhari would win the 2015 elections,” the APC said in a statement by Osita Okechukwu, Spokesperson of its South-East caucus.

“Even the church did not spare him; he was called unprintable names, yet his prophecy came true.”

In the run-up to last year’s presidential election, Mr. Mbaka had told a gathering of thousands of catholic faithfuls at his Adoration Prayer Ground ministry to vote out then president, Goodluck Jonathan.

The priest, renowned for his blunt sermons, has a huge followership in‎ South East Nigeria, where thousands of Catholics throng to his prayer ground for healing and miracles.

But following his recent transfer to a new parish, speculations were rife that his being moved to another parish was punishment for his unalloyed support of a Muslim candidate, President Muhammadu Buhari, over his Christian predecessor, Mr. Jonathan.

But Mr. Madu told PREMIUM TIMES that “such frivolities ‎have nothing to do with the posting.”

“His posting should have been a privilege, not a punishment – which the Bishop can do because he has the power.

“If he (Mbaka) says it’s a punishment, then it’s open for further investigation. Posting is a regular thing, a priest can be transferred after two, three, four, or more years, it depends on the discretion of the Bishop.

“That ministry (Adoration Ministry) is his private ministry, it does not belong to the church. Overseeing a parish is a full time job. Overseeing a ministry is a bigger task. If the church decides to take him somewhere where he’ll have more time to carry out his ministry, how is it punitive? That should not be the language.”

Mr. Madu said Mr. Mbaka had done things that were unacceptable to the church in the past but received no punishments for them.

“He is supposed to be a missionary,” Mr. Madu said. “What if the Bishop had closed down the ministry‎, which is within his power to do? Sometimes, transfers can be for the good of the priest as something can be going wrong which he might not be aware of. The Bishop is free to move any priest at any time, it is his prerogative.”

Let Rev. Fr Mbaka knows full well that even with this posting, no matter the motive, the cause of Christ will still be served. Jesus Christ will still be glorified. Let him read The Book of Psalm 66 and verse 12.

  • persona

The defense of the spokesperson somehow indicts the bishop of some kind of complicity. He said the priest had offended the church before, he also said the church could take over his ministry…its an indication these were options looked into before deciding that the posting would be the one they could defend.
Just like the death of Christ, it was meant for evil but God will turn it out for good if the man does the will of his master.

That is Bishop Kukar’s role. if you dont know……….here is it
His duties as a statesman has spanned through several years and
administrations in Nigeria. To mention a few of such notable
assignments, the Bishop served as a Member of the Human Rights
Violations Investigation Commission Federal Government of Nigeria from
1999-2001, Secretary of National Political Reform Conference
(February-July 2005), the Chairman of the Ogoni-Shell Reconciliation
(August 2005-till date), Consultant with the Pontifical Council for
Inter-religious Dialogue at the Vatican City (1999-2006), Member of the

the Governing Council, Nassarawa State University, Keffi (2014- till
          date).

      • simon tor gideon

What of Bishop Kukah who is always every where playing political roles openly especially when Jonathan was campaigning to be retained and his avowed criticism of Buhari`s govt of recent? Is he not a catholic priest?

        • Wale Bolodeoku

All priests are equal, but some are more equal than some others.

        • Joe

You do not understand how grace function. The difference between two individual is the grace of God that covers the differs. However, there is no democracy in the house of God. Shekena!!!

        • Sethken

Kukah is a Bishop appointed by the Catholic Bishops to speak on their behalf on many national issues. Kukah was critical of GEJ as he is with PMB. Mbaka on the other hand speaks for himself. He does not speak for the Bishops in Nigeria. Mbaka’s comments are at best divisive, not so much with Kukah.

        • Epsilon_Delta

He did not do any of those on behalf of the catholic church, he acted in his own capacity just like Mbaka has been doing. They signed up to the church’s ethics upon being ordained, routine transfer of a priest should not be on the news.

      • persona

Its not a political party but the politics there pass party own. We sabi how the thing dey happen and its in all churches.

    • AlBsure23

It was not a hidden fact that he has erred in the past. It is in the public domain.

  • Alhajivinco

My maternal grandfather was an Anglican Reverend and got posted all around the country for the benefit of the Ministry and for his own exposure. Mr Mbaka is lucky not to have been previously fired for the controversy he continually stokes and courts, which has dragged the Church into disrepute. No one is indispensable. If Rev Mbaka has become too big for the Catholic Church, he has the option to resign his ministry. Indeed he can establish his own church.

    • UFOROABAZ

Well spoken. One of the reasons the church is having the issues we are having is because people like Mbaka think they can incite and make so called ‘fiery statements’ wiping public sentiments in the process, and then hide behind persecution and suffering. Since he choose to make his transfer open,I would have advised he be transfered to Bornu state/Chibok so he can learn to speak with wisdom

  • Toughie Man

Bullshit! Bullshit! Bullshit! Mbaka likes GRA and all the top connections. A real grassroots minister does not cherishes the pleasures of this life, especially in the Catholic faith. He prefers to stay among the common man and have concern for them. Mbaka antecedents are well known to all. Before the fall of Jonathan, he dine and wine with the family. When things fell apart, decamped to APC. Let him learn from the apostle Paul, once he sets up a church he moved on to preach to others and set up more churches, so that the kingdom of God can spread. Mbaka has a choice, humble himself and accept in good faith the transfer from the higher authority which is legitimate in the Catholic Church or resign and become the Chief APC prophet, Gehazi. Period!

Ralph Madu BAD BELLE go kill you. Because Fr.Mbaka light shines pass you, you come use your “power” abi? Next time you go find say Fr.Mbaka is appointed cardinal and then Pope. “Who God bless, no man curse”

  • Fuzio

He should be defrocked. Transfer is not enough. If he want to become a politician, then that is well within his rights but he should first give up the priesthood.

  • Ukpaka

The transfer is punitive and the last paragraph confirms that.
However, if the Bishop dares close the adoration ministry he might have more problem that he can handle in the catholic church.
Yes, we know its the Bishop’s prerogative to transfer priests but we know there is politics involved in this transfer. We’ll support Fr. Mbaka to continue the work of God wherever he’s posted.

    • Malchine

Then prepare to get to the new place with him. What is important is the salvation of your soul, NOT THE PLACE.

    • Factsay

For ur church, una no dey do transfer?
      Busy body

    • AlBsure23

That is what you need to do; support him in his new assignment. If the spirit of God is with him, he will continue to save souls for Christ in the new location. Pray for him instead of shouting ‘politics’ ‘punitive’.

  • ed

Transfer with immediate effect. For what crime. Yes you can transfer him or any other. God business should be done the right way. The immediate effect?. That language is not consistent with action taken naturally in the church environment. You give people notice of a transfer please.

    • Malchine

Have you ever seen a copy of any transfer made by the Bishop? Are you now the teacher of the Bishop?

      • ed

The story: Mr. Mbaka is to resume immediately at his new post at the Our Lady Parish, Emene.
        That’s stated above.

        • Malchine

I wish we are commenting on something we know very much about it. Let us pray for the “man of God” please and leave it at that. The Church has 21 centuries of history. Nothing is so new.

  • Rommel

President Jonathan corrupted everybody in Nigeria including places of worship including shrines, everywhere was desecrated by the shoeless one from Otuoke and his disciples, when darkness was about to take over Nigeria this priest resisted and showed the light so that others would see the way, today, impunity is on the back heel and the evil ones are fighting back ferociously, this priest will succeed anywhere he goes, his name is already written in the hearts of good people,he will triumph.

    • Du Covenant

Very well said!. As a christian I strongly believe those who still see nothing wrong with fortunato’s behaviour in the last administration should be ashamed of themselves. Father Mbaka did the right thing and may God bless him even more for choosing to be on the side of the common Nigerian. Mahatma Ghandi once said “You must be the change you wish to see in the world”…..

  • Say the truth

Oga Bishop touch not mine anointed and do the prophet no harm. Did Bishop not know that father Mbaka have the sympathy of the APC and the media?Father Mbaka was in the GRA for over a decade and has established himself there, you now want to take him to a place less than GRA. Why do you want father Ejike to suffer? Please sir Bishop gbaara biko. The anointing on Father works well only in GRA, so please have a rethink and consider rescinding the decision. Also consider that Father Mbaka is now a national figure as the priest to Mr President, so you have to treat him in a special way different from those common fathers. No suffer suffer please.

    • Otile

No condition is permanent. Fr Mbaka is under the Bishop. The Bishop has every right to move him to any location where his services is better needed to attend to the people of God. Fr Mbaka is going to suffer nothing but locophobia, he will survive.

      • UFOROABAZ

        …Chairman,which one is locophobia lool

        • Malchine

fear of location. His anointing will expire in other locations.

    • Malchine

      You are just funny.

  • The facts

Generally people don’t like to move from their comfort zones so I understand Fr Mbaka’s predicament. However, the Catholic church shouldn’t have allowed the adoration ground in the first place because it’s like another church under the Catholic church.

  • UFOROABAZ

When you watch the video in which Father Mbaka openly condemned the govt of Jonathan, describing him sometimes as “Bad luck”, you have to appreciate the stance of the Catholic Church. No matter how fiery a character you are,you cannot use the platform of the church to run a hate speech against an individual or a corporate entity ! It is not right now,it will never be right! Supposing other pastors had done the same things he did,do you think we would have been alive today. Some clerics used the 2015 elections to polarised the nation along religious lines, something that should never be encouraged. I routed for PMB,but did support Fr Mbaka’s volatile views. He is fortunate to get a transfer now,in medieval times it might have cost his life!

    • UFOROABAZ

      …I routed for PMB,but didn’t support Fr Mbaka’s volatile views…

      • utolason

        You didn’t!

    • Gugurus Ekpa

      UFOROABAZ,

Is the whole essence of religion not to be open about evi and point to it when one is seen? You are playing politics with your statement. Father Mbaka was simply doing what Jesus Christ did in the Bible—to tell the truth.

      • UFOROABAZ

Mr Guguru,Jesus condemned the hypocrisy of the scribes and pharisees, and never did Jesus at any time call for the overthrow of the government of Herod at that time,or the Imperial government of of Caesar, even though both were prosecutory of the Jews. In fact the Jews do not accept Christ as messiah because they expected him to be military in his approach. Fr Mbaka converted his open air crusade to call for a change in govern ment, calling Jonathan-‘Badluck’. He is entitled to his opinion, but should never use a religious platform to ferment hate and envenom an already polarised crowd

        • Gugurus Ekpa

          UforoABAz,

Jesus hardly condemned a thing. You are making up your own history of Roman times.

          • UFOROABAZ

Enjoy. Its your level of understanding

          • Gugurus Ekpa

            Thank you. I sure will.

  • utolason

Between the Catholic Church and Fr Mbaka, I would rather believe the later. We know how things “work” in Nigeria. Someone so brave, who had promoted the Church as the last hope of the common man, should be rewarded with promotion. Fr Mbaka did not say anything that a significant majority of Nigerians were already experiencing, which is why Buhari won the election.

    • Factsay

      There is no between

The Catholic Bishop is now playing politics. There is always politics in every aspect of our life. Father Mbaka please suffer a little more and the Pope will reassign you to a better place.

What of if Fr. Mbaka drops dead tomorrow, would Mbaka tale along with him the adoration assets or the priesthood to the grave yard? Mbaka is taking his luck too far, giving people ample justifications to suspect his sentiments all these years. Transfer of priests is a principle, done every 3 years in catholic church, one would not know why Fr. Mbaka was left in (Christ the King GRA) one place for too long, same as Msgn John Aniagu, in St., Leos ikeja, and they now think the parishes are theirs for ever..It is only the poor priests without connections nor godfathers that they send to Adamawa and borno, for me, I would suggest they send Mbaka to chibok, they need him more in that war torn zone than in enugu

It is Irritating for Niger Deltans to Lay Claim to the Oil in Their Community – Buhari

According to PUNCH, the President said those of them, who participated in the nation’s 30-month civil war that left millions of Nigerians dead, found the belief of Nigerians, who lived in oil-rich areas that the natural resources belonged to them, very irritating.

Addressing Nigerians in Addis Ababa at a town hall meeting President Buhari said, “The theft of oil by some Nigerians that happen to live there, who feel that the oil belongs to them and not the country, is an irritating thing for those of us, who participated in the civil war for 30 months in which at least two million Nigerians were killed”. – Muhammadu Buhari….

It is quite true that the Bishop has the power to transfer any priest, but Bishops these days are not happy for young Priests doing exploits. Believe me this same thing happened in my own village Parish where the Blessed Sacrament was conspired by even the priests in order to get at the Parish priest who was fearless to the evil of the village men. They conspired with the Eze and sent the priest to a more remote village. Funny enough, my people still go for adoration of that priest to where he is now. From the exchanges we have read from the Catholic Church, it is clear that there is a serious politics under it and Mbaka knew it hence his outcry. Well, I am happy that it coincided with the time of lent and the Lord will be Fr. Mbaka’s strength. Rejoice people of Our Lady Parish, Emene for the light of God is shine upon you.

  • javscong javscong

I am disappointed that the Church has commented on the transfer of Fr. Mbaka out of Enugu to another Parish. Every Catholic priest subscribes to obedience as one of his vows. Every priest is under the authority of his Bishop or Superior and postings are absolutely at the discretion of the Bishop. Even the Bishop is supervised by his Cardinal who incidentally is just another Bishop. We do NOT have “juicy” postings in the Catholic Church and owe nobody any explanations for the deployment of our priests. Mbaka knows that much and should go to his new Parish and replicate what he did in Enugu. That is the meaning of evangelization. I have seen this nonsense of people giving unhealthy meanings to priests’ postings, too often. It happened a few years ago in my Parish, St. Dominic’s where even uninformed parishoners formed a sort of pressure group. The lesson, we the Church must learn from this is: we must NEVER allow our priests to become “lords of the manor” at any location. No Parish priest must stay longer than 5 years at any location before being moved on. That is the nature of their vocation and 99.99% of priests accept that.

Sambo Dasuki (rtd) has given his side of the story on the arms procurement saga which has pitted him against the incumbent federal government led by President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement on Wednesday, Dasuki insisted he was never invited to appear before an Investigative Panel on the Procurement of hardware and munitions in the armed forces.

The full statement reads: “In a theatrical manner, the Presidency fed the public with many allegations against my person and yet to be named former public officers.

“To draw sympathy, the presidency quoted some absurd findings including extra-budgetary interventions; award of fictitious contracts; 53 failed contracts; payment for jobs without contractual agreements; non-execution of contracts for the purchase of 4 Alpha jets, bombs and ammunition.

“For undiscerning Nigerians, they may tend to assume that the allegations were true and pronounce the former National Security Adviser guilty as charged.

“The statement issued by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, who should know better as a former President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors and a witness to history, was nothing sort of propaganda to cast aspersions on Dasuki.

“To set the records straight, Nigerians should appreciate that the AVM Jon Ode-led panel did not invite the ex-NSA under any guise before arriving at its ambiguous findings. At least, fairness demands that the panel ought to hear from Dasuki instead of its recourse to hasty conclusions. If the panel had been more patient and painstaking, it would have been availed of all relevant documents on some of the jaundiced findings.

“As if acting a script, the Presidency alleged that the Panel accused Dasuki of awarding fictitious contracts between March 2012 and March 2015. Contrary to this claim, Dasuki was not the NSA in March 2012 and he could not have awarded any contract in whatever name. The ex-NSA was appointed by ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on June 22, 2012.

“All contracts and accruing payments were with the approval of the President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces. Once the ex-President approved, the former NSA paid. So, there was due process for every purchase in line with regulations guiding arms procurement for the Armed Forces.

“And Nigerians should note that all the services generated the types of equipment needed, sourced for suppliers most times and after consideration by the Office of the NSA, the President will approve application for payment. For sensitive sectors (military/security), there was no room for awarding fictitious contracts. The conclusions of the panel were presumptive, baseless and lacked diligence.

“There were no fictitious contracts; contract sums were not diverted and the relevant services in writing acknowledged delivery of equipment. For all procurements, the Nigerian Army, the Air Force and the Nigerian Navy have their contractors.

“While awaiting judicial process on these allegations, it is proper to make some references to show that the presidency was just desperate to hang some former public and military officers who served this nation at the risk of their lives.

“It is laughable for the panel to assume that 4 Alpha jets and 12 helicopters were undelivered. In a memo to the Office of the National Security Adviser(ONSA), referenced NAF/905/D/CAS of November 28, 2014, the immediate past Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Adesola Amosu acknowledged the receipt of the 4x Alpha jets attack aircraft and the helicopters.

“On 10/21/14, the Chief of Air Staff also confirmed the receipt of F-7 N1 aircraft combination of 250kg bombs and accessories at $2,894,000 with the cost of freight at $1,200,000. The same Air Force confirmed getting 2xTri Shield 36DG Tactical radars

“In another letter of December 1, 2014 signed by L.S. Alao(on behalf of the Chief of Air Staff), the Air Force said it received five containerized fuel storage and dispensing units with equipment.

“The Nigerian Army wrote the ONSA to acknowledge the delivery of 14 armoured tanks. In a December 13, 2014 memo, the Brigade of Guards thanked ONSA for releasing N30m for RCA, Operation allowance for Troops on Op Urban Sweep II for third and fourth quarters of 2014. This is apart from the installation of CCT Cameras at the Brigade Headquarters, 2 backscatter bomb detection vans and other equipment.

“On November 26, 2014, the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh sought for approval of the award of one pair of uniform(in the interim) for the Armed Forces at N165, 375 to El-Jahab Mubarak Nigeria and N330,750,000 for two pairs.

These are some of the acknowledgement letters submitted to me by the end-users(the services). It is not for me to go and find out whether the equipment were delivered or not. I am not the one keeping the inventories.

“To show that I have nothing to hide, I submitted a comprehensive list of all requests for procurements by the services, the items bought and those equipment being awaited to His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari long before I left office. If there were issues, I should have been questioned. I was just the clearing house, I did not award contracts to my company or proxies. There was no contract awarded or equipment bought without approval from the then President and Commander-In-Chief. I am not a thief or treasury looter as being portrayed.

“In order not to endanger the nation’s security, there are many salient issues and contracts which I cannot put in public domain. I am ready for trial on all these allegations in order to prove to Nigerians that I did nothing untoward in office. We will certainly meet in court.

I have a lot to tell Nigerians but in the interim, they should not believe some of the allegations as the gospel truths. The good thing is that some of the key actors in the present administration were parts of the past process being viciously challenged.

“As for my tenure as the nation’s NSA, I acted in the interest of the nation and with utmost fear of God. I did not use the office for any self-serving agenda. I occupied the Office of the National Security Adviser at a difficult moment in Nigerian history when terrorism was at its peak and I am leaving posterity to judge me accordingly.”
