An operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Abdulrahman Mohammed Biu, a deputy detective superintendent, has been arrested for offences bordering on extortion, influence peddling and impersonation, the commission said in a statement Friday.

The officer was arrested on Monday following intelligence report alleging that he extorted $150,000 from some military officers on the pretext that he would help give them a soft landing in the ongoing investigation into the arms deal scandal.

Upon his arrest, a search was executed on his residence in Abuja where the following items were recovered: $20,000 cash, N500, 000 cash, two police uniforms bearing his name with the ranks of Deputy Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent, Police warrant card No: 27/2014 with the rank of DSP allegedly obtained from Kano Constabulary office, documents relating to military arms investigation and account information of several senior military officers.

A search of his car parked in the premises yielded the following items: unbranded pistol with a magazine and ten live ammunitions.

This was disclosed by a statement signed by Wilson Uwujaren, the EFCC’s spokesperson.

EFCC said Mr. Biu’s modus operandi includes dropping the names of ranking officers of the commission, claiming he was acting on their behalf. A paper containing seven of such names was recovered in his house.

The suspect has made useful statement, while investigation continues.

Nigeria can only get better. EFCC is littered with corrupted officers like this, and with the current cleansing of the Aegean stable, men with tendencies like this should be quickly arrested, tried, and if found guilty, removed from the System. We are tried of our filthy past, our children deserve a better system!

There are worst ones in the EFCC. The guy caught is just a foot soldier when compared with others who are now billionaire just because they work for EFCC. I heard of one who has been buying every house for sale around Abule Egba axis and I am trying to get the guy who mentioned his activities to release more details or whistle-blow to expose him. I strongly believe the war on corruption is not getting anywhere with the EFCC still harbouring criminal operatives in its fold. Buhari as a matter of urgency should set up another body to discretely investigate the EFCC.

      • UFOROABAZ

Mr Ayuze,I hail you. You are spot on!!!

Attention National Assembly: Regarding 2016 Budget under debate

Raji Fashola whom President Buhari Buhari
appointed as Electricity Minister is clueless and a misfit. He does not have
the requisite knowledge or understanding of the job. It is a triple tragedy he
        is in charge of electricity supply for which Nigerians still stay in pitch darkness;
get no value for his tenure, and, pay a virtual tax of 20 billion Naira to shadowy
and perhaps non-existent consultants just to hold his hands.

The 6 trillion + budget President Buhari has too
many loopholes for thefts. All those loopholes must be closed before it is too
late. The 20 billion Naira tucked into the sectoral budget of the Power Ministry
is slush fund. It is said to be for consultancy but Nigeria’s electricity problem has
nothing to do with an inadequate consultancy requiring any 20 billion Naira. Both
the Senate and the House of Representatives conducted separate investigations
beginning the year 2007. None of those legislative chambers saw any nexus
between power outage and inadequate consultancy.

They rather saw irresponsible neglect to repair,
to maintain and expand the power plants systems. The National Assembly is urged
        to immediately strike out that 20 billion Naira in the budget as example of slush fund;
perhaps actually meant to be round-tripped for repaying APC campaign contributions
        – which funds were likely initially stolen from the treasury by the so-called party donors
who were in public office and had illicit access to the treasury at the time.

        • Burbank

Article is on the arrest of an EFCC staff.
          Be relevant!

          • ??????????

            @Timurlame:disqus

So the budget of Nigeria is not relevant to Nigerians? I just dey ask. If EFCC officer took $150,000
bribe and somebody is telling us to shine our eyes, that an amount far bigger than that is at risk,
should we face only the smaller amount, and allow the bigger 20 BILLION NAIRA to disappear too?

          • D. Olamiti

            @ayuze:disqus:

It is obvious now. Raji Fashola’s ignorance is too costly. To retain Fashola
as Minister will cost taxpayers 20 billion Naira a year to pay Consultants who
will teach him what to do. That’s too high a price to pay for his Ministerial
ignorance. The better thing to do is to fire Raji Fashola and appoint the
Consultant as Minister. A Minister’s salary is about one million Naira a month.
It means it will cost Nigerians 50 million Naira in 4 years to get the services of
the Consultant if he were to be appointed as Minister for Power in replacement
of the empty-headed Raji Fashola. That singular step will save Nigeria a
whopping 20 billion Naira. That is what CHANGE should mean – not to retain an
ignoramus as Minister for 50 million Naira in four years and still pay 20 billion
Naira to someone else who will teach the ignorant Minister how to think.

          • JM

            D. Olamiti, u seem to know Fashola more than those of us who know him just from the media. But, what really is your case here? I am sure u are aware of what politics is and what politicians do. So, even if Fashola, a SAN, is assigned the Justice port folio, or if an engineer is assigned the power and works port folios, will any of them go out there and implement or do the leg work of bureaucrats and consultants? When we had Nnaji, one of the foremost power experts, as power minister, didn’t he use consultants and experts? Well, fact is, Fashola is in charge for now, ignorant as you think he is, and you are not (sadly for you, but maybe fortunately for Naija). We must stop this nonsense of bashing and disrespecting our leaders simply because we dislike them for one thing or another. May I request you to rewrite another piece, not respond to me, where you proffer ideas for Fashola to think about, in order to be successful in serving you and me? Just give him a list of sensible ideas, since he is ignorant, and, maybe, you will get a phone call to become a super consultant.

          • edmondosafari

For mismanaging Lagos schools into producing 80% school certificate failure rate every year,
since the year he resumed office in Lagos, Raji Fashola’s incompetence has by now very clearly
destroyed the immediate future of Lagos state, besides the unprecedented debt of $3.7billion
he incurred and placed on the neck of all Lagosians to pay – a debt equivalent to forfeiting
the next three and half years of Lagos state annual revenues from federal allocation.

          • Burbank

A budget of Nigeria can be discussed in the budget article.

          • JM

Thank u much, Man_Enough, and I recommend ur golden advice for D. Olamiti too (see his tirade against Fashola below). I took the trouble and liberty of advising D. Ola, and now Eremosele, to send Fashola a list of intelligent suggestions, since these fellas call Fashola clueless, to make Fashola an effective minister, even only for the short period that PMB may keep him until D. Ola or Eremosele earn PMB’s call to replace Fashola.

        • WOCKHARD

It still amazes me why a lawyer (SAN) should be made the Minister of Power. Are we lacking in professors of Engineering? The Nebos and Nnajis . Talk of round pegs in square holes.

    Bravo to the EFCC.

The commission must not only be clean; it must also be seen to be clean.

When Lee Kuan Yew became prime minister in Singapore, the 1st thing he did was to strengthen and cleaned the Corrupt Practise Investigation Bureau, Singapore’s EFCC.
The rest is history – Singapore metamorphised from a backward corrupt-infested British colonial outpost into a country richer than Great Britain itself.

Wike asks Amaechi to account for N3 trillion

    Rivers State Gov. Nyesom Wike

Rivers State government yesterday called on the Minister for Transport, Mr Chibuike Amaechi to account for about N3 trillion received throughout his eight years tenure as the governor of the State.

The State Commissioner for Information, Dr Tam George told newsmen in Port Harcourt that the State was still reeling from “the catastrophic legacy of the former governor” despite receiving over three trillion naira in revenue in 8 years.

“Amaechi left the most abandoned projects in the history of Rivers State since 1997. Thousands of workers were without their salaries for four months and thousands of teachers were not paid for nearly 12 months. We have so many abandoned projects which huge sums have been paid but projects are yet to be completed. We have the Mono-rail project that gulped over N60bn and it was abandoned. We have the Woji road project awarded at N3bn. There was a variation of the project to the upward of N14bn but it was abandoned. We inherited the project and completed it. There are so many of the abandoned projects. We have the Karibi George 250 bed project where huge sums of money were paid but no single block was laid at the site” he said.

He said that the State would deploy every legitimate means to compel those that looted the State to face the full wrath of law.

        This CBN theft case
is so embarrassing and so unfortunate for Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. It has
ruined him forever. He can hope on hope but sooner or later President Buhari
will have no choice than to apply the law of the land, and bring Sanusi Lamido
into custody for trial. I have read the full audit report myself. These points here as
highlights point to only half the picture. Sanusi Lamido presided over the most
corrupt regime of a public institution in the history of Nigeria. The total
amount found missing or and stolen under his irresponsible headship is a
staggering 1.4 TRILLION NAIRA. There’s no way Sanusi Lamido can escape
in detention for criminal investigation over this financial crime against
humanity. He will shortly be arrested.
