EFCC quizzes Jonathan’s ally, Jide Omokore, over alleged multibillion dollar deals

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Tuesday evening questioned Jide Omokore, an ally of former president, Goodluck Jonathan, and Chairman of Atlantic Energy Drilling Concepts Nigeria Limited.

PREMIUM TIMES gathered the arrest was in connection with a series of multi-billion dollar petrol import and crude export deals.

Multiple security sources told PREMIUM TIMES that Mr Omokore, who was  later released on Wednesday evening, made revealing statements.

Operatives said he was expected to return with some required documents.

Atlantic Energy Limited was one of the companies that allegedly received multibillion dollar worth of public assets without due process by the Jonathan administration in 2011.

The company, which was created less than a year earlier and had not produced a droplet of oil, was awarded controlling stakes in two lucrative oil blocks – OML 30 and 34 – for just over $50 million each.

The deal, which was signed by the immediate past minister of petroleum, Diezani Alison-Madueke, gave Atlantic Energy Limited a controlling 55 percent stake in the oil block.

Curiously, Shell, which owned the remaining 45 per cent stake, fetched $1.3 billion for a single field after an open and competitive bidding process.

The company was also accused of lifting crude oil, but only remitting a fraction of its worth to the government.

In 2012, Atlantic Energy paid $168m into the government’s account, but lifted about three million barrels – valued at over $350 million.

In 2013, it also lifted about 2 million barrels of crude valued at about $240million, but paid only $68million.

Similarly, in 2014, Atlantic Energy paid zero cash-call, but lifted about 500,000 barrels of crude oil, valued at $54 million.

SPOG, another of Mr. Omokore’s companies, is also being investigated for an alleged N400 million petrol import fraud.

SPOG allegedly imported 3,000 metric tonnes of PMS but filed claims for subsidy payment of 13,000 metric tonnes with the Petroleum Product Regulatory Agency (PPRA), therefore allegedly pocketing N400 million more than it should have been paid.

The EFCC recently raided the business premises of Mr. Omokore, making away with documents and computers.

A source also said Mr. Omokore has been instructed by the presidency to reconcile his accounts with NPDC, and immediately pay up the several billions he is owing the Nigerian government for allegedly lifting crude without remitting the proceeds.

This would have been impressive, but I’m not impressed because everybody knows that the oil sector is den of thieves that encompasses all former military /civilian leaders, all Nigerian billionaires, all heads of past and present military juggernaut, if you are going to clean this, or recover our money, You Can’t be Selective this time, this is not going to work like your Dasuki bullshit; recover ALL oil wells from every crook, the oil wells should belong to the country.

    • Shugaba Nkasa

You talk about things that matter significantly only if Nigerians gave a hoot about the things that impress you. Save this kind of talk for your children.

Finally, a very big fish. Please extend the invitation to Kola Aluko, Chris Aires, Benedict Peters, and that Ghanaian dude (his name escapes me).

  • MammanJiyaVatsa

Take his statements, investigate him, found guilty for defrauding the state, don`t jail him, put a bullet into his head and make his family pay for that single bullet belonging to the state….. and let this serve as a deterrence to would be politicians who think Nigeria`s wealth belongs to their nucleus family.

    • Samuel Okezie

You guys and quick analysis. Govt. took a deliberate step to encourage Nigerians to compete in the upstream market with Mobil, Shell, Eni and other IOCs. as part of their so called Local Content Policy. It saw for the first time indigenous firms managing and running large OMLs although most of them simply got foreign technical partnerships. These deals turn a person a billionaire over night.Something similar to how Russian Billionaires were created during Russia’s privatisation before Putin came to power. I will be disappointed if any of them went into sheddy deals when crude prices were about $100. It would be the epitome of greed as they just needed to do little to make billions legitimately. The only questionable process is the manner government forced IOCs to relinquish the management contracts of the oil fields and handed it over to Nigerians. I personally dont have a problem with the general idea. Let their trials begin in court for us to learn the facts. Any conclusion of guilt or innocence at this stage is premature. Wait for the courts, learn the facts, reach conclusions with your knowledge.

      • MammanJiyaVatsa

Yet, Nigerians suffered the most under their this so called Local Content Policy, were the white folks at the helms of affairs, i doubt Nigerians would suffer this much in the mist of plenty oil.

Nigerians should learn to call a spade a spade, a thief a thief. Nigerians are notoriously known to purchase any items in the US or Europe or the middle-East cash down, in it`s millions and Billions, the question the white folks ask is -From which planet this apes in human forms emanated from, spending as if tomorrow never exists, while their folks back in Africa wallow in perpetual penury.

Personally, i don`t reckon with Nigerians / Africans who flaunt their wealth’s ostensibly because the facts remains, it`s all stolen/looted commonwealth of poor Nigerians and Africans as a whole.

This is the direct bane of Africa`s underdevelopment, our politicians are the ones under-developing NigeriaAfrica directly – Don`t even allude the Americans or the Europeans to Africa`s backwardness, we NigeriansAfricans chose to.

        • Samuel Okezie

You are right but I hope you know you are likely included. It is likely your phone is top end Samsung or iPhone, iPad. It is typical mentality of poor people to aspire to own luxurious items or top of the range items.. Build a 12 room mansion in place of the mud hut the ancestors grew up not minding the low utility. My office made the most profits under Jonathan, everybody was buying, lecturers, contractors, politicians, students mostly females, pastors everyone. Bang & Olufsen also opened shop in Nigeria. Under Okonjonomics there was a deliberate infusion of funds into the private sectors via banks funding power and energy deals. Unprecednted billions poured into Agriculture and education. The wrongs or rights of Okonjonomics may be too academic for this forum. The lazy analysis is to always shout corruption but the fault is deeper and very profound.

Duncee is in Kenya and attending memorial service BUT Premium Times cannot place the story in any conspicuous location on its website becos Nigerians will react. How can you refuse to even acknowledge dead soldiers in your country when they are slaughtered but go to another country to pay respect to their soldiers?

Last month, over 150 Nigerian soldiers were ambushed and killed. Their pictures are all over the internet and it looks like chemical weapons were used by Islamist terrorists from Northern Nigeria. But Duncee kept quiet and the APC led government refused to give Nigerians the full details. Even PT did a shabby crooked investigation and kept everything low thereafter. Its Editorials ignored the issue. Instead they focus on Metuh and his handcuffs. Oh Lord Laggrard! Why did you amalgamate the countries of the West African coast with those of the Magreb?

By paying respect to soldiers of foreign land while ignoring the massacre of 150 soldiers by Bokoharam and 700 Shiites members? Is this how to restore the dignity of a nation? Do you understand dictionary definition of dignity at all? Bokoharam killed over 31 people today in Chibok, not even a single statement from Presidency to that effect while Buhari is deceiving his self in Kenya.

  • Dr Pat Kolawole Awosan

Does this man called Jide not have a photograph of himself taken for 4yrs he spent with Dr Jonathan? Boko Haram Islamist terrorists killed 31 persons today in Chibok town using suicide bombers BUT Premium Times and their wonderful editors are blind. May the blindness remain permanent in their lives. When we practised journalism in the 60s it was different. BBC, Aljazeeral, OBTTV, CKCXTV, Fox News, BayelsaTV, BiafranTV, ChannelsTV, etc etc all carried the news. 1. “The Igbos are the sort of people, whose desire is mainly to dominate everybody. If they go to a village; to a town, they want to monopolise everything in that area. If you put them in a labour camp as a labourer, within a year, they’ll try to emerge as head man of that camp, and so on”.—Ahmadu Bello, October1965

    2. “I will ensure that there is no Igbo employed in the whole of Norther region. Whenever there is vacancy and because of our short supply of qualified manpower in the North, we would first look for any other non Igbo Nigerian, if we dont get any, then we will look for a foreigner/expatriate to do the job, and if we dont get any foreigner to employ, then only we will consider an Igbo BUT only on contract basis.” –Ahmadu Bello, October1965

    CONCLUSION
Only Biafrans of Igbo ethnicity come to the courts in handcuffs. They are Olisa Metuh And NNamdi Kanu. Even Dasuki who took the money, shared the money and even had weapons and amunition recovered in his house is not on handcuffs. This shows how the Hausa North reason in line with the thoughts of Mr Ahmadu Bello stated above. This is why Biafran must watch it and react accordingly. I really don’t understand why their Govs, Senators and politicians are watching this national disgrace meted out on them by a Wascless Mohammadu. If any of the Niger Deltan freedom fighters were treated like this I am sure some people would be vigorously putting their MLQ29 to use.

    • Du Covenant

Sir Ahmadu Bello, a man of infinite wisdom was well ahead of his time, he saw what others could not see right under their nostrils. Everything you just quoted were and are still true to date. After 1970 Nigeria decided to forget and move on but, we are still being reminded of the dark days of our history when innonecent, decent people were killed in cold blood!. May there souls rest in perfect peace!!..

      • emmanuel

King Jaja of Opobo once told the useless British chancelor in Opobo that; “The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who in times of injustice chose to be neutral, for there comes a time when silence is betrayal” This is what MLK rephrased in 1967 while giving a sermon in a church service. It holds true, even today. Rather than examine the points made, you choose the defeatist and evasive path of denial. How then can a conglomerate like Nigeria move forward? Especially when the real shareholders are not part of the management of the organization and.or in a position to choose who manages? The very essence of the principles of corporate governance wherein the major shareholders (wealth owners) deermine the board members is lacking in the company called Nigeria. This is why the managers are not accountable and can afford to ignore some thieves and hold only those they don’t like their face. No entity survives it. Enron failed in US. Arthur Anderson failed in UK…and so on. Until you have a country where the shareholders determine the board members (leaders) there is no way the leaders will ever be accountable.

    • Ukpaka

Only your ignoran….t ‘azz’ will add ethnic coloration to everything. I’m igbo and if I know somebody is out to get me I’ll be careful not to put myself in a situation where I’ll be humiliated.
I condemn evil wherever I see it. Ahmadu Bello made the alleged statement in 1965, we’re in 2016 and we’re dealing with people that stole from the government. I could care less if these people are my brothers or not. If you commit a crime, pay the price. Don’t hope for an ethnic war to bail you out.
      Stop defending evil people.

But no one has any evidence of where he withdrew the money from. All banks in Nigeria have no withdrawals of that amount in his name. Nigeria is a big mess. FG gave money to Buhari’s aide and asked him to say he has returned the money. This is like pastor Oyedepan slapping a wizard or conducting fake miracles.. No problem. Buhari is Hurting our Businesses in Nigeria – American Govt.

According to US Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker, the Nigerian government’s foreign exchange policies over the past year are hindering the ability of US companies to do business in Nigeria.

US companies have “been quite explicit it’s a barrier to trade,” Pritzker said in an interview on Monday in Lagos. The CBN, with Buhari’s backing, has tried stop the currency weakening amid a rout in prices of oil, by restricting imports and foreign exchange trading.

The apex bank has pegged the Naira at 197-199 since March and foreign investors have sold naira bonds and stocks to avoid a devaluation they see as all but inevitable. Experts say the currency will weaken 20% to 249.5 per dollar in three months, while the black market rate fell to a record 305 this month.

    • shokoxrated

      @asking question

Journalism died in Nigeria in 1999. Online or on broadsheet, bribes and self-censorship to aid theft
and corruption of those favored by the journalists, is the new rule of self-destructive media practice.

    • favourtalk

Maybe you should take them to court if you have any reason

    • Julius

You should establish your own media company and write the wrongs.

  • Toughie Man

PT has come to its tetter ends. Send your reporter live to Chibok, let them cover the court trails of criminals, do investigative journalism, carry out opinion poll of Nigerians, how they feel about the economy, educational sector, foreign affairs, high cost of living and how the government has impacted either positively or negatively. Please, what we need now is people oriented journalism. As you report corruption, balance it with other areas and not being tilted towards a one-sided, weak and impotent journalism. Enough of this jaundiced write ups that are irrelevant. If your staff are brain fagged and have lost touch with modern approach to accurate and fact based reporting, then GO BACK TO SCHOOL.

    • wode

Why waiting for PT? You can as well establish your own media outfit or better still, at lower cost, launch a blog to put your own news or report. What says this is not a news worthy of, and ready for, consumption by the readers?

    • Julius

Was those opinion poll done when Jonathan was the president for 6 years ? Were they done for the entire 16 years that the pdp held the power for the entire country ? You want a poll done for the government thats not even a year in office. Werent you so concerned about those wasted , looting years ? I wonder why !

      How BUHARI covers up corruption

Akinwunmi Ambode, the new governor of Lagos state, this August revoked the
corrupt self-allocation of over 25 plots of land in Lekki by his predecessor –
Raji Fashola, in his final days in office. Most of the plots, it is alleged,
were allocated to Raji Fashola’s own relatives, aides and associates —including
Yewande Animashaun – his cousin who also served as his special adviser on
public health, and Wale Ahmed, who served as his commissioner for special
duties. A female newscaster with a Lagos-based TV station was one of the
beneficiaries, The Cable learnt. The land was officially parceled into 25 plots
and shared by Raji Fashola who went on to sign the certificates of occupancy on
May 26, three days to his exit from office.

Buharinomics is not working, millions of Nigerians are suffering and dying, companies are idle and dying, foreign investor are discouraged, Naira is dead, instead of Buhari to fix our economy, he keeps blaming GEJ for his Buharinomics mistakes. Buhari fix our economy and stop deceiving us with so called war on corruption when you have no regards for Nigeria’s law.

Only fools and horses can think at your level. Remain enslaved to the past, The rest of the world knows it, but many Nigerians like you, victims of mental slavery will continue to delude themselves. One Nigeria, One Nation.

I don’t know what I dd. Nothing I write here is published. Did I say Islam is not a good religion to offend you people?
Did I say you people in Premium Times should not wear HIJAB in newsroom? I did not say that. All I am trying to say
is that Muhamadu Buhari is NOT a good president. What is wrong with that? Anytime I write this thing you people will
just cancel me. Is that fair? Am I not human being like you?

The Constitution of Nigeria gave me the right to click Premium Times and enter the website to impart my opinion. But you people are so wicked that you don’t allow me to impart anything. Why? Is it freedom of speech to be blocking me?

I am not ready to support nonsense. I cannot support ignoramus APC party. Tell me just one person in Buhari cabinet
that can make one-hour debate with sense on development issue. Mention one person. Nobody there, just pure dunces.
Is that what you want me to support, so that you can publish me? I am sorry I will not support nonsense! Since he came,
tell Nigerians one thing Buhari did in seven months that shows that he can think. I am waiting for you to tell Nigerians.

    • joe

      “I don’t know what I dd(SIC). Nothing I write here is published.”
      – Maybe you are too dumb to write a simple sentence and click on “post”. But you finally did it this time. congrats! 🙂

“.. Tell me just one person in Buhari(SIC) cabinet that can make one-hour debate with sense(SIC) on development issue..”
      – Raji Fashola. Check out his latest speech about Pension Fund. Google it (If you are up to that)

“tell Nigerians one thing Buhari did in seven months that shows that he can think”
      – He is kicking the sh*t out of looters sponsoring people like you to make dumb propaganda online

      NB
Most(90%) Nigerians are extremely smart. So people like you, that are paid to come online and try to “brainwash Nigerians and your sponsors are the remaining ´(dumb) 10%. They are dumb because they do not know that the people they are attempting to brainwash are intellectually superior to them. 🙂 So Goodluck to you in your exercise in futility!

The whole idea of citizens or shells owning oil blocks is insane. The oil block belong to Nigerian. If President Buhari is serious about fighting corruption he would’ve cancel all oil blocks. Nigerian are only interested in entertainment value of the anti- corruption war.
Omokere is clever rogue and a thieve. He shouldn’t only return all stolen fund but should do time to stop others.
