The National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Mr Oilsa Metuh, at the Federal High Court, where he is standing trial over alleged N400m fraud, in Abuja

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Thursday morning slammed a fresh two-count charge on the spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Olisa Metuh, over an alleged attempt by the politician to destroy a confessional statement made to its operatives.

The new charges came less than 48 hours after the Federal High Court, Abuja, granted him bail over a seven-count charge of corruption.

The EFCC drove the embattled politician into the premises of the FCT High Court on Thursday morning, preparatory to slamming fresh charges on him.

Like on Tuesday, Mr. Metuh was in handcuffs when he was brought into the court.

The handcuffs were later removed as he waited to be taken before a judge.

He was later brought before Justice Ishaq Bello, and accused of attempting to destroy information provided during his cross examination at the office of the EFCC.

Count one of the charge contains allegation of destruction of a statement he had given at the commission, to prevent it from being produced, while count two of the charge revolves around allegations of mischief, all punishable under section 327 of the Penal Code Act.

After pleading not guilty to the said charges, counsel to the EFCC, Sylvanus Tahir, asked for more time to allow his team present witnesses and evidence in support of the allegations against the politician.

Justice Bello, who is the chief judge of the FCT High Court, noted that the EFCC must produce three witnesses during the next sitting, without fail.

He noted that it was needless to have the case brought before him if it was already ongoing at a Federal High Court.

But EFCC counsel, Mr. Sylvanus, explained that the new charges, filed on January 18, were not the same as those currently being heard at the Federal High Court.

The matter was adjourned till January 25, for hearing of an application for bail, while hearing on the substantive suit will be on February 26.

Mr. Metuh was also asked to return to Kuje Prison.

The EFCC had on January 12 accused Mr. Metuh of shredding a confessional statement he made to its operatives, indicating it would charge him separately for attempting to destroy a major evidence in the case against him.

“The tearing of statement is tantamount to willful destruction of government property and it is a serious offence,” the official had told this newspaper at the time. “Also the fact that he obstructed operatives from performing their job is also a criminal offence. We will explore the possibility of filling a separate charge against him at the Federal Capital Territory High Court.”

In the original case for which he is standing trial at the Federal High Court, Mr. Metuh is facing a seven-count charge of corruption.

He is accused of receiving N400 million from former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki. The amount is part of the allegedly diverted sum of $2.1 billion meant for the purchase of arms.

On Tuesday, Justice Okon Abang granted him bail.

To regain his freedom, however, Mr. Metuh, Justice Abang said, must deposit N400 million bail bond – same amount he is accused of illegally receiving; two sureties who must have properties in Maitama area of Abuja, and who must also deposit N200 million each.

It is unclear whether Mr. Metuh met those bail conditions.

Bad as Olisa Metuh’s takings might be he still does not stand out as the worst in the pack of thieves.

Raji Fashola is the most heinous creature that ever strutted public office. He stole 1.5 billion Naira

in a single day by stealing 25 plots of Lekki lands for his family. If Raji Fashola is not kicked out of

cabinet and locked up to await trial for theft, Nigeria’s anti-corruption war will remain a joke.

    • inoknowbook

“Akinwunmi Ambode, the new governor of Lagos state, last August revoked the corrupt self-allocation of over
25 plots of land in Lekki by his predecessor – Raji Fashola – in his final days in office. Most of the plots, it is alleged, were allocated to Raji Fashola’s own relatives, aides and associates —including Yewande Animashaun – his cousin who also served as his special adviser on public health, and Wale Ahmed, who served as his commissioner for special duties. A female newscaster with a Lagos-based TV station was one of the beneficiaries, The Cable learnt.
The land was officially parceled into 25 plots and shared by Raji Fashola who went on to sign the certificates of
occupancy on May 26, three days to his exit from office.”

The system is rotten and i have no sympathy for any of the suspects. Imagine the rot. A fashion designer was paid over 500 million naira by the crooks at NIMASA for doing nothing. A fact he comfirmed in Court. 400 million naira was allegedly paid to Metuh’s company without contract from ONSA account, is Metuh an arms merchant? He is a member of PDP’s NWC and would have known that it was not PDP’s funds. He’s accused of destroying evidence which has to be proven beyond reasonable doubt. All the professional wailers should hold their peace. The suspects will have their day in Court and if innocent shall be set free like Fani Kayode. We should learn not to cry more than the bereaved!

  • tazo

dis is a serious matter. EFCC has their own hidden agenda. how can someone eat statement given to him ny ur staff and u hust stand and look as he was eating it. is Metuh a dog? dat he will eat paper in ur front. not even dat, he has his image to protect and i doubt him eating paper. so dont bring up issues wen there is none.

    • Zak Eneji Muhammed

Lol…if he had any image at all to protect he wouldn’t have even partaken in the sharing of arms fund. Honestly, I can’t understand ur way of reasoning cos I’m really surprised u think these people care about their image at all.

  • Sambo

What annoys me most are the wagons of robbers hiding behind the mr president to gain immunity against prosecution. It is quite unfortunate buhari hasn’t started corruption fight yet. Let him start from his own caucus.

    • Zak Eneji Muhammed

Unfortunately, I don’t know i u ever heard of any thief prosecuting himself. It’s the responsibility of the citizens to keep their leaders in check by voting right. The problem with Nigeria and Nigerians is that we ve been voting PDP at the center for 16 good years and they kept shielding each other from the public eye, treating national issues as family affairs. So, it’s left for u and I to do the right by making sure no party is allowed to rule beyond 8 years as mostly done in the US but unfortunately, people like u and I are not ready for the sacrifice involved, by making sure we shun all forms of inducement from the politicians.

      • sanctus

What is the rationale behind the shielding of APC members from the wrath, reality and sincerity of the corruption war? why has Amaechi, Fashola and many others considered as saints when such weighty financial indictment to the tune of N53.9Billion evidences been silenced? have we deem GUINEA-PIGS, and otherss like Amaechi and co. SACRED COWS. Where is the conscience in this supposed fight against corruption? Let us grow above sentiments.

What kind of country are we in, they charged someone to court for an offense, the person pleaded not guilty yet they are looking for other means to bring him down. I am not in support of this in any way. Anyone who is found guilty should be jailed but when the court has given its own verdict why will some people decide to go against it.

You have a warped sense of reasoning. I know you must be a biafran masquerading under a Nigerian name.Nigerians dont reason like you.Nigerians support all the steps being taken to sanitize the system that was bastardized by badluck jonadaft and his gang of armed robbers, and we owe no one an apology.

Exhibition to gross mischief and bestiality against the opposition PDP. It should be known that the PDP yielded power to the APC without vilifying APC members to the contrary, the APC led federal government now deem it fit to undermine the benevolence of the once ruling party.

Point of correction, APC won the election. It was not up to PDP to yield power, it is the constitutional requirement to hand over power to the victorious party. And that was what PDP did.

Is that not his ‘confessional’ statement? Hasn’t he the right to change his statement? I’m a lay man in law. Could someone clarify?
That brings us to what we’ve saying all along—IMPUNITY. Like the cases of Dasuki and Kanu, bails and fresh charges. Soon the FG will be isolated by the international community for human rights abuses. The British govt have told Nigeria it’ll return ‘looted’ funds on conditions.

      • tundemash

Cl0wn, you are a layman in everything. Looted funds have always been returned conditionally. The international community are happy that Nigerians now know stealing is corruption. Just yesterday UAE signed an MOU with Nigeria to help chase those who stole your destiny and ran to Dubai.

I am sure the editor’s of Premium Times and their friends in APC and Presidency will leap in the air in an orgy of misguided ecstasy each time they splash such sensational headlines on the web pages of their website. But it is the height of decay In the Nigerian space wherein sensationalizing an overly media trial of alleged corrupt men of the opposition part (PDP) has become a standard for measuring the tone of Editorials, Breaking News, and all other news highlights deserving of vantage positions on the news/web pages of newspapers and websites of the media houses sponsored by ethnic bigots of the Yoruba extraction. This has been their stock in trade since the 1st republic and it backfired. Again it will. And one wonders weather the Editors of these papers understand a little bit of human reaction and history.

    1. Of what economic importance is this story to present day Nigeria and/or Nigerians?
    2. How does Metuh or the alleged N400m even if recovered, help 10,000 out of 185m Nigerians?
    3. In 7 months of Buhari’s administration how many of the 98 schools destroyed by Northern terrorists have been built? None.
    4. Since USA refuse the weapons Buhari asked for what did he do? What was his reaction? …he came back and sat down because he believes a black man can never make an armoured military tank.

    5. What plans does Buhari and his APC party have about industrialization and manufacturing?
    6. Buhari says he will borrow to rebuild the North East (Yes…The imperial West will easily give you billions to build Primary Schools and Almajiri Schools), BUT tell them you want to borrow to build just 2 standard medical scientific research institutions and 1 standard home grown car manufacturing plant, and they will NEVER give you a dollar…this is why we don’t need dull brains an old men as presidents.

    7. Why is this Premium Times not reporting 8 deaths of Biafrans shot dead in Abia yesterday? Their lives don’t matter?
We must realize that war begins in the heart of men many many many years before the first shot is fired. Nigeria cannot continue like this.

How can a Metuh be on Hand cuffs and an IBB & OBJ are walking free on the streets. I believe a time is coming when Nigerians will take the law in =to their hands and personally send the thieves left alone without prosecution to the exact places that others have been sent via a system of selective justice guided by ethnic bigotry. But one thing is sure – the days of the North & West stealing and asserting control over the resources of the South & East are gone. Believe it or not.

“The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation on Wednesday announced the operational shutdown of the Port Harcourt and Kaduna Refineries owing to crude supply challenges arising from recent attacks on vital crude oil pipelines.” …“Ohi Alegbe, the spokesman for the NNPC said in a statement that the plants were shut simultaneously on Sunday after the Bonny-Okrika crude supply line to the Port Harcourt Refinery and the Escravos-Warri crude supply line to the Kaduna Refinery suffered breaches.” — Reuters

It shows how easy it can be to bring Nigeria to its knees. An attack in Warri leads toshut down of 2 out of 3 refineries. The attacks were not just on any pipelines but on the precise feeder lines from source. When the Niger Delta comrades in arms and freedom fighters told the world that they would cut off supply of oil to the North if they used their Boko haram to attack anywhere in the Niger Delta Republic very few doubted them. But now even those minute few know better.

Many of the freedom fighters for change have advanced degrees in History and all branches of Chemical Engineering. Many are in petroleum Engineering and industrial welding and so on. Some might have worked for these useless oil companies who have polluted the Niger Delta, therefore they are quite attuned to the mood of the times. We cannot have alien vultures from other parts of Nigeria feed on the resources of the Niger delta and then get threats on top of it. It was Buhari who called the first shot by issuing a threat and anyone educated or illiterate who has no respect for a different nationality other than his is doomed. This applies to Buhari. To issue a threat to people who suffer from environmental pollution, neglect and outright theft of its oil wells by the North & West of Nigeria is a direct call for chaos and provocatively so.

    God bless the Niger Delta
    God bless MEND comrades
As Niger Deltans, In God we trust but with our hands we will defend ourselves.

    1. “The Igbos are the sort of people, whose desire is mainly to dominate everybody. If they go to a village; to a town, they want to monopolise everything in that area. If you put them in a labour camp as a labourer, within a year, they’ll try to emerge as head man of that camp, and so on”.—Ahmadu Bello, October1965

    2. “I will ensure that there is no Igbo employed in the whole of Norther region. Whenever there is vacancy and because of our short supply of qualified manpower in the North, we would first look for any other non Igbo Nigerian, if we dont get any, then we will look for a foreigner/expatriate to do the job, and if we dont get any foreigner to employ, then only we will consider an Igbo BUT only on contract basis.” –Ahmadu Bello, October1965

Their lives don’t matter

    • Frugoo

Your number 1 and 2 question is a fundamental challenge which you obviously a victim of, i can authoritatively say you do not understand what is precedents and this unfortunately is the tenet upon which leadership and rule of law thrives. If criminals are let off the hook without punishment, what on earth should make me hard working when i can easily find a strategy and enter governance to steal.
My friend wake up, you must not comment in what you do not understand. Try and travel , it will help you exposure.

      • Deltan

If traveling makes a man swing into retardation in thoughts as is evident in your comments, then I better remain in my Republic. In any case, when you move from Bonny to Brass, no be travel be that? Parasite! All of you will see pepper very soon. Hunger go finnish all of una. You will beg for us to come back as one Nigeria but it will be too late. Resources and determination wins the race and not necessarily size or population. Ask the Arabs about how Israel survives. We are ready to pull that string. We love other Nigerians but we demand our own country. Period.

    • Richard Wall

Are you suggestkng that all those looters should be allowed to go with what they pillaged from our commonwealth? What kind of reasoning is this? You have seen clear evidence that $2.1 billion dollars, which is just the tip of the iceberg, has been looted by a few criminals and you see nothing wrong with that.Based on this,I know you must be a biafran.Only biafrans have this warped sense of reasoningAlways rationaising criminality.
As for your number (7).You are right. The death of 8 biafrans does not matter.Think of it as euthanasia (mercy killing)Let them make trouble again and more will be euthanised.

11,100 Workers Sacked In 48 hours As A Result Of Falling Nigerian Economy.

1] 3,000 Civil Servants has been sacked by Imo State Government:
    2] Shell to sack 10,000 Workers. {About 30% in Nigeria}
3] 700 staffs of FCMB reported sacked few hours ago:
4] Zenith Bank sacks over 1,200 employees
5] Trouble in the oil sector as 3,200 Nigerians face sack:

Nigerians are starting to understand the picture, at least by now?
What is your option of survival to overcome these ugly development.
In less than 48hours, these huge number of workers are laid off and if you still think that you will not develop a survival strategy now, you may be deceiving yourself.
GOVT CAN’T DO EVERYTHING FOR US. THINK!!

    • JSA1

The list is endless! This is why we have been shouting on Jonathan looting spree of Nigeria Treasury with his ministers and co travelers. What you have narrated above are some of the direct consequences of an economy that has been looted by Jonathan, his wife and all funny characters in his 6 years of sojourn at aso rock. I hope with this you are now convinced to support the anti corruption effort of PMB so that the loots to be rocovered will be used to reflate our economy with the attendant infrastructural development, job creation and other positive multiplier effects on our economy. May God be with our PRESIDENT BUHARI even at 73+.

    • musa aliyu

Ask your pdpigs to return all looted funds and we’ll be back on our feet again. Mumu liar

    • Richard Wall

You need to get out more. Are you conversant with current affairs at all?Do you realise that the world economy is in recession?Even China, which used to be the engine of growth is in dire straits. The price of oil is at its lowest in over 10 years.Stock markets all around the world are in negative territory and you expect Nigeria, which relies on oil for over 85% of its earnings to be immune. Please read the opinion of the chief economist of RBS Bank,in the UK who has advised its clients to sell all their shares because there will be a bloodbath this year.To paraphrase what he said”now it is about return of capital, not return on capital”
The meaning in simple English is that investors should aim to recover their capital, because even that is not guaranteed, not to even think of making any profit..
At least you admitted that Shell is retrenching staff worldwide. This is not restricted to Shell. All oil companies are retrenching because the cost of producing a barrel is higher than the sale price.Any oil company operating in Nigeria will retrench staff in Nigeria. It has nothing to do with Buhari.
If your personal lord and saviour, badluck jonadaft and that fake magician who calls herself ngozi okonjo iweala aka Professor Peller, had been in power,it would have been worse because they would have stolen whatever remains of our foreign reserves.

“They are turning governance to Nollywood, such that when one movie is about to end, they release another one. As it appears that the $2.1 billion arms deal movie is getting to an end, Lai Mohammed introduced another movie titled N1.34 trillion loot.

“Unfortunately for them this time around, Nigerians have become tired of watching the Federal Government movies, they now want reality. Nigerians are now aware of the scam in the $2.1 billion arms deal movie having seen that the amount those already charged to court were charged with is not more than N10 billion and $2.1 billion is over N600 billion.

“Therefore, Lai Mohammed must either tell Nigerians details of the 15 former governors and 55 people that he claimed stole N1.34 trillion, where the stolen money is kept and bring back the money or apologize to Nigerians for lying……

Satanic sharia is in force. Each time the Mohammedans clamp their non muslim enemies into their gulag the story is the same. Every 2 weeks they sheepishly bring what they call “fresh charges”. After two more weeks they invent “fresh charges”. It goes on and on until they poison their victim or the devil calls the head of Islamic junta home, only then can their victims gain their freedom. While these abuses are going on some dimwits will be rejoicing, celebrating and making noise. Pathetic.

    • musa aliyu

This government is very smart. So far Buhari has refused to allow the corrupt judiciary to rubbish his anti corruption crusade, by also exploiting the loopholes in the criminal justice system to beat the looters and their judicuary friends, without breaking the law. Now government breaks the charges against an individual looter into smaller parts and begins to arrange them in courts in piecemeal. As each accused person is being granted bail, he is re- arrested again on another charge. Please keep it up until they are all brought to justice.

But he did not survive 3 minutes and every word was a disaster. Each time I am I feel like laughing I play back the tape and it reminds me of how ugly Nigeria has become. Orji and his son conspired to push the poor and hard-working citizens who were doing business there, from the about 800m2 piece of land on which the former timber market was located in Umuahia, Abia State. They sold the piece of land to Olisa Metuh, who has proceeded to convert it into a housing estate on which he is currently erecting about 40 units of three and four bedroom detached and semi-detached duplexes. The EFCC should take note and make haste to confiscate this property

This picture of Olisa Metuh is fantastic! I tell you why….
Just look at the picture again, and the first thing that comes to your mind is 2 Samuel 1:25-27: How have the mighty fallen, Jonathan lies slain on your heights! At [verse 27]: How has the mighty fallen, the weapons of war lies perished. Now before you think this is what it is not, these verses for present day Nigeria is not a lamentation as it was for Samuel. For us in Nigeria, how has the might fallen is a song of joy with tears in our eyes. Tears that those whom we entrusted with the resources of this country since independence have without a shred of conscience betrayed that trust to the point that even Lucifer would shout ‘blood of Jesus’ in disgust at what these Nigerian officials have done to this abundantly blessed nation. I am no preacher, but Romans 6:23 says: the wages of sin is death. While an old English adage says: crime does not pay!
Yes, for long in Nigeria, the people in government have always believed that crime pays abundantly. These vultures reap where they have not toiled. How could a single individual corner $2.1 billion (USD) and share it with his friends, cronies, mistresses when the purpose of that money is to help protect and save the lives of Nigerians many of whom are northerners, the same place as the individual who chose to waste that huge outlay of resources. The irony is that the money was allocated to fight Boko Haram which is ravaging the North East, over a million people became refugees in their own country, over 15,000 people dead (the figure is probably 3 times higher because we have no accurate records of the dead, we have no way of identifying missing people in this country through their dentures or other medical records).
When I write these things, tears fill my eyes because of how a few privileged individuals enslave the rest of the country. Across the world Boko Haram is regarded as the deadliest terrorist group on earth, even more brutal than ISIS. If we compare Boko Haram to our political class, one quickly realises that the Nigerian political class, our elites in and out of government are more potent than Boko Haram because while Boko Haram kills people in their thousands, our officials , politicians, and elites kill a nation of 180 million people. That surely makes Nigerian political class the deadliest species of human beings on planet earth!
You begin to realise this when you look at most states in the federation, these states are not even run as well as the Nekede zoo in Owerri or any other zoo in Nigeria. That surely tells you how terrible things are in the country! If you compare how long we have been a nation, and measure where we ought to be by now and where we are now you, the reality is so horrifying that one could simply lose his mind thinking about the incalculable amount of waste, and unimaginable frenzy for everything that is corrupt by our officials, political class, religious clerics, elites, institutions of the state, schools, churches, mosques, in fact everything. Even the tasbih, rosary, and prayer pamphlets from our religious institutions are products of corruption! In Nigeria, nothing is sacred from corruption.
However, this picture of Olisa Metuh should offer at least some kind of solace to any reasonable, decent Nigerian that at least, even briefly, that Nigerians are capable of enthroning sanity in the system. When I look at Olisa Metuh’s picture, something inside me smiles, and that comes from the look on the prison officer’s face. You could see the prison official’s glance of authority at metuh as if to say: My friend, would you wipe that corrupt grin off your face, do you know how many women and children that #400 million naira you received out of the $2.1 bn could have been saved?’ A picture they say tells a thousand stories. This picture is certainly to be a nightmare for every corrupt official in Nigeria who has ever taken a kobo from the people, from the crooked policeman mounting a roadblock on the road and robbing innocent citizens he is paid to protect to the highest official in the land up to the president, this picture should be a reminder that: no one who steals from or messes with the Nigerian people will ever go unscathed. If in doubt ask Abacha, Dasuki, IBB, Metuh….
PS: Gist on the street is that ex-govt officials and their pals are leaving town the way frightened sailors abandon ship. Ahoy!

A new trend has developed in our judicial system.
Instead of slamming a 20 count charge the prosecutor will slam 2 x 10 counts. after the bail of the first 2 a new 2 will be slammed.
Our judicial system needs total overhaul in the interest of human rights.
    What goes around comes around.
