We’ll arrest more influential Nigerians soon — EFCC chair

PIC. 8. 2015 INTERNATIONAL ANTI-CORRUPTION DAY CELEBRATION IN ABUJA

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, has said more influential Nigerians would soon be arrested to face prosecution as the EFCC under him has reinvigorated the fight against corruption in Nigeria.

Mr. Magu, who made the disclosure on Wednesday in Abuja at a forum with online and broadcast media managers, said since his appointment as acting chairman of the EFCC, he had undertaken the re-ordering of the agency’s priorities for effective implementation of its mandate.

“The effect of this, which is obvious for all to see, is the investigation, arrest and prosecution of some of the most powerful forces in Nigeria, who have questions to answer on their stewardship whilst in office.

“A former National Security Adviser, former ministers, former governors, serving and retired military men, a media mogul and several others, are among those we have called to answer critical questions concerning the management of our commonwealth.

“As we speak, many more influential Nigerians are on the radar of the EFCC and, in the coming weeks, they would have their days in court and Nigerians will be kept fully abreast of the results of our investigations,” Mr. Magu said.

The EFCC boss said in carrying out the mandate of the commission, he has been guided by the “fear of God, national interest and the rule of law”.

Mr. Magu said apart from bringing corrupt public officers to justice, the EFCC under his leadership is determined, in line with the stance of the current administration under President Muhammadu Buhari to send “unmistakable message” to everyone, that no Nigerian shall be regarded as above the law or treated as sacred cow as far as the fight against corruption is concerned.

The EFCC chairman, however, said the commission cannot succeed in carrying out its mandate without the support of the media.

He said the EFCC already has the support of all relevant bodies and organizations.

He said he held a meeting with the president on Wednesday, and that the message from Mr. Buhari was nothing but total support for the agency.

“By far more inspirational is the political will of Mr. President to fight corruption. This unbending will, which some now call body language has given the needed traction to the anti-graft campaign,” he said.

Mr. Magu said Mr. Buhari’s resolve to fight corruption in Nigeria was underlined by his comments during his maiden media chat last Wednesday where he swore not to spare anyone found to be corrupt.

Mr. Magu quoted the president as saying,  “I don’t …tolerate corruption. When I was Head of State, I didn’t put anybody above the law. At this time, I assure you, I will not put anybody above the law… If anyone is caught, I will not only sack (him or her) but will ensure that the case is taken to court”.

He added that the president’s resolve is complemented by that of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mahmud Mohammed, who, during the last All Nigerian Judges’ Conference, declared unwavering support for the war on corruption.

He added that at that same judges conference, Mr. Buhari expressed the concern of the Nigerian people for the undue delays experienced in the trial of corruption suspects.

The judiciary, he said, has responded with some practical steps in the form of the designation of selected courts to try EFCC cases and some practice directions.

“We believe that when holistically and effectively put into practice, the measures would drastically cut the time corruption cases spend in court before Nigerians know whether the accused is guilty as charged or innocent of the crime.

“As a Commission, the EFCC is very determined to put into productive effect, the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, (ACJA), 2015.  This law, which has been rightly labeled a legal “revolution”, by none other than Professor Itse Sagay, chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Anti-corruption, could not have come at a better time than now, when Nigerians are yearning for justice.

“On the part of the EFCC, I can assure you that the effect of our even more penetrating investigations and commitment to rid Nigeria of all forms of corruption and economic and financial crimes can –and will continue to be– seen from the cases we take to court for trial,” he said.

No political witch hunt

Mr. Magu also responded to comments from participants at the forum that a lot of Nigerians have a feeling that the ongoing war against corruption appears targeted at members of the opposition.

He said by his orientation, he has nothing to with politics and is therefore, not doing the bidding of a political party.

“Such accusations have come up a lot, but, we work with petitions before us, in fact, I am eager and waiting for something from the other side, but nothing has come so far,” he said.

Mr. Magu also said he had never been a fan of plea bargaining, adding however that he works within the laws of the land.

The managing editor of PREMIUM TIMES, Musikilu Mojeed, who spoke on behalf of the President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, Malachy Agbo, said the group is fully committed to the ongoing fight against corruption and pledged the support of members to the EFCC.

He also asked Mr. Magu to consider partnering with the group in training journalists.

I never understood why you loosers always throw in the Name Obj, Tinubu when anything is said abpot some people being arrested. How long ago were those 2 served in the government ? Why didnt Jonathan arrest them before Buhari became the President, if they were corrupt ? By the way, Tinubu was charged to court by the EFCC. He got a lawyer, went to court and fought the charges and won. Isnt that what he suppose to do ?. Im surprised you didnt mention Fashola, Pa Awolowo, Gen. Diya amd Amechi.Nonsense

    • If you truly have evidence or you know those in PDP that has evidence why not petition the EFCC and escalates it if they did not act instead of just trying to assume? Justice should never be a respecter of persons regardless of political level and it has no sentiments. In Nigeria, we are too used to the false that compelling justice should be only on the poor.

Ibo man—I pity your regional thoughts for Buhari

  • .Dr Pat Kolawole Awosan

I am beginning to lose confidence in the direction in which Mr Buhari and his government seem to be heading. Arrests have thus far been directed at perceived opponents and outspoken Nigerians who in their respective rights point out what they feel is improper in the conduct of Mr Buhari. Least amongst these is his undemocratic statements about the political detainees – Dasuki, Kanu and others. Democracy in its simplest definition is government of the people, for the people and by the people. This present govt seems to be telling us that it is a govt of the people, for the people, but by Mr Buhari. This is antithetical to the principles of democracy even in its crudest form. The EFCC should therefore extend its tentacles to people like Sanusi Lamido Sanusi who has been robustly implicated in Dasukigate scandal. The receipt of some Jeeps by Mr Buhari from the ex-NSA should be revisited as the same pool of cash was used in their procurement. If these are not done, the EFCC will continue to be seen as Buhari’s agency simply engaged in a vindictive war of attrition.

Are the arrested individuals corrupt or not? Have they not confessed in their own words what they have recieved from Dasuki ATM? So, once you want to escape arrest for your crime in Nigeria, you criticise the government the claim to be withchunted once you are arrested. This is simply ludicrious arguement coming from someone that appears to be based in the Diaspora. People that turned Nigeria to a laughing stock in the comity of nations must be arrested and prosecuted. In a society like Nigeria where corruption is endemic, there is no way you will not be accused of selectivity in the fight against corruption. The most important thing is not to jail an innocent person. Where do you start the fight on corruption in Nigeria? Church, Mosque, politicians, Police, Custom, Traditional rulers, mechanic? Where?

An agency of government that have charged one person (Dasuki) 3 times on different charges within a space of 4 months without a convincing evidence should not be beating its cheat for wonders. Please carry your investigation and present it to court, arresting people is not worth matters but government doing their parts and allowing your agency to do a thorough job.

FELA’S SON, SEUN KUTI, ON BUHARI

Buhari jailed my father on currency trafficking. My father did nothing wrong, but he put him in the prison for three years. My first three years in life from 1984 to 1986, I didn’t see my dad; he was dumped somewhere in Maiduguri. This is my own personal reason for a man like Fela who will never commit a crime. I know my dad and for you to jail that man you must be inherently evil. You know when you have experienced such blatant disregard for human right by taking away three years of his life for doing nothing. Will Buhari say he is not a criminal? He claimed he knew nothing about the PTF money. If he says he was not aware about that, how did he know when money got missing in Nigeria? There is a precedence. He has claimed ignorance before, he can do that again. Sadly that is what Buhari is doing–pretending not to be aware of the 5.6b Mr. Madueke left in the coffers of NNPC–Because Buhari is busy spening 326m to buy exotic animals–while feeding is taking 1.75b-That is after stealing over 2.8b oil wind fall for which he sent Fela to prison.

  • Nzambe

All that the EFCC does is quiz and release. That’s all. They summon you, have a chat with you for two or three hours, they let you go. Case closed. No prosecution or indictment. They are just putting up shows to calm the Nigerian public.

  • eclub

This EFCC guy is nothing but an officious oaf, looking at Buhari’s body language.

Even if Dasuki gave money to Nigerian business people, or public servants, how do you prove intent? How do you prove they knew what the monies were designated for originally? Dasuki may know, but the recipient has no idea it was for arms. You need intent to prove elements of fraud.

Secondly, fighting Boko Haram is not just weapons, it might involve ‘intelligence’ gathering; the national security adviser is at liberty to fight the war the way he likes, certainly the recipients are of that mind.

If you are serious about corruption, look at the Halliburton, look at Sanusi Lamido at the Central Bank, look at bigger money than the small 2.1 billion distributed among hundreds of people to prop up the economy.

This sycophantic efcc guy is a jobber.

    • Olu

If you are sincere with fighting corruption you will first appreciate what EFCC is doing presently and then make your suggestion on areas you want them to look into or what they should do more to tackle the corruption problem in Nigeria. I have read a lot of your write up and it clearly shows that you are not in tandem with the shock being expressed by Nigerians at the level of theft being exposed every day since the last government handed over. You constantly justify Good luck bad governance and theft with lots of disjointed logical submissions on this platform.
You will need to do a lot to change peoples perception of you on this platform.

        • Oh!

Maybe when you have time in your busy schedule between taking your medication and arbitrarily pushing buttons on an unplugged keyboard you can explain the logic behind “I’m not procorruption, but I am antiEFCC”.
          it will be appreciated.

Thanks, you couldn’t have had a better response for eclub comments.

    • Oh!

You are a perfect example of the criminal mentality Buhari is eradicating,

  • Du Covenant

Just do it provided your investigations are detailed and very thorough. It hurts when the courts throw cases out as a result sloppy collection of evidence!.

May Ibrahim Magu and the EFCC be more effective and resolute in the fights against the politicians that had killed countless Nigerians through corruptions.

Carefully choose the type of things you lie about!
This type of event you are talking about is a life altering event. Even if it is for just 7 days and 30 minutes, it will be seared into your mind forever or untill old age and/or Alzheimer erases it.

Listen to yourself “My first THREE years in life from 1984 to 1986”. You can’t even count from 1 to 3 you want to tell lies in years.. Get the hell outta here!

“Such accusations have come up a lot, but, we work with petitions before us, in fact, I am eager and waiting for something from the other side, but nothing has come so far,” Ibrahim Magu pls stop lying. .There are numerous petitions at EFCC currently on your desk which you are aware of and doing nothing against the following APC rogues:
    1) Former governor of Lagos State Ahmed Bola Tinubu – ECONET(now Airtel) and OANDO – where he used Lagos State money to buy shares at both companies and thereafter converted those shares to his personal and wife’s shares. LASU Idimu Road contract and numerous Lagos State landed properties that were exposed by AIT in 2015.
    2) Former Lagos State Governor Raji Fashola – N78M website corruption scandal, N3.4B Ikeja borehole corruption scandal, Ikoyi-Lekki bridge corruption scandal and numerious Lagos State landed properties scandals. These corruption petitions were submitted to EFCC by CACOL. Till today, EFCC have done nothing on those petitions instead Buhari awarded him ministerial position.
    3) Vice-President cum RCCG Pastor Yemi Osinbajo – . Osun State school building contracts petition to EFCC that his company was involved.
    4) Osun State governor Aregbesola – diversion of state money and his son money laundering case – nothing has come of the petition sent to EFCC.
    5) Former Governor of Ekiti State Kayode Fayemi – N50M bed scandal and other Ekiti State money corruption allegations sent to EFCC by Governor Fayose since 2014. Instead he was awarded ministerial position by Buhari.
    6) Lai Mohammed – Lagos State contract corruption allegations at EFCC. Instead Buhari awarded him ministerial appointment.
The above allegations are not made up by me, they were in most Nigerian newspapers.

Nigeria :Jailed Ex-President’s Son Returns To Nigeria
After spending 22 years in a California prison, Musa Jack Ngonadi, the son of a former Nigerian president, is back in Nigeria. The 47-year-old son of Yakubu Gowon allegedly arrived in Nigeria on January 1, 2016. Last year he was released on a state pardon granted him by President Obama after spending 22 years in jail.
Musa was living in the United States with his mother, the late Edith Ike Okongwu, when he was arrested on November 18, 1992 at the age of 23. Agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration and the United States Customs Service arrested him for conspiring to import in excess of one kilogramme of heroin.
He was sentenced to 40 years in prison for smuggling heroin, although Ngonadi protested vehemently through his legal team that he was innocent and was framed.
However, Ngonadi decided being in prison was not the end of life. He enrolled in a university and successfully graduated with a degree in law as a prison inmate. He was also a role model and a legal adviser to all the inmates. He carried himself well and was a source of inspiration to co- inmates who had given up on life. He was rewarded for all his good conduct several times by the prison authorities.
His family, however, did not relent in their efforts to get him out of prison. Calls for his release began to grow louder and President Obama hearkened to one of the moves and acted by granting him parole. Ngonadi walked out of Taft Correctional Facility Bakersfield California as a free man on November 2, 2015.
It wont be a surprise if he would be made a commissioner in Plateau State or a Federal Minister by Buhari government.

…in a related story, the whole PDP members of the National Assembly were seen boarding planes out of the country. When asked what was happening, they said they were going for a convention. When prompted to explain where the convention was taking place, they said it does not matter, just as long as the country has no extradition treaty with Nigeria!

DasukiGate: EFCC Awaits Buhari To Approve Olisa Metu’s Release. We Have Finished Questioning Him: – EFCC.

The officers of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) as at 7:42pm this evening, confirmed that Chief Olisa Metuh, the PDP spokesman has finished answering all questions on the allegations and made a statement to that effect, and declared that they are waiting for directives from President Buhari to release him or not.

Olisa Metuh’s statement to EFCC was short – 2 pages. He said former president Goodluck Jonathan called him and gave him an assignment. That he carried out the assignment perfectly well, reported back to the former president who was satisfied with job done.
That former president directed he should give an account for which the job can be funded and he gave his company account. That he disbursed all monies to those it was meant for but will not give details until he is charged to court. That if the EFCC has any case they should charge him to court. He is ready to defend himself. That he transferred N400m for the job and he disbursed it to the last kobo and the funds has nothing to do with the said Arms purchase funds.

Asked for a copy of the report, Olisa said its for his personal records he will not give EFCC but will present it in court. They asked Olisa to make additional statement, he declined and said they should use force if they want him to.

Olisa Metuh is set for Court. It’s now over to EFCC for next move, He has refused to drink water or eat food. They asked him, his reply: “Do you people want to poison me?”.
EFCC is waiting for President Muhammadu Buhari who now act as EFCC head, Police, Judge and Prison office to decide whether to detain Oilsa or lock him up until Bayelsa election.
