A few days after the federal government announced that the Boko Haram had been defeated, the insurgent group attempted an invasion of Maiduguri.

The attack commenced at about 6:00 p.m. local time.

The insurgents were repelled by soldiers as they tried to enter Maiduguri via Aladuwari village, which is about 2 km from the Borno capital, witnesses and a security source said.

About two hours later, while the gun battle continued, two suicide bombers believed to be females, detonated explosives near a FOMWAN primary school between Suleimanti and Jiddari area of Maiduguri.

Abubakar Muhammed, a vigilante official, said he saw corpses and injured person as he joined others to flee from the troubled neighbourhood which is close to Aladuwari.

“It was two women that detonated themselves near that FOMWAN school,” Mr. Muhammed told PREMIUM TIMES. “Many people got killed and many others were injured.”

A source in the area, Umar Ibrahim, told journalists that as a result of the shoot-out, a rocket propelled launcher fell on a group of people near a borehole at Jiddari Polo area.

Also on Sunday, a lone suicide bomber reportedly caused the death of 15 members of a family, comprising three wives of a village head, their 10 children and two other persons.

Residents of the area said the woman who caused the death went running into the house of the village head in Bakasi layout of Maiduguri claiming she was being chased by Boko Haram. When the members of the household gathered to calm her down she detonated her explosives killing everyone close to her.

“They thought she needed help when she came in shouting ‘Boko Haram is after me, Boko Haram is after me.’ Before the family members could know her real mission it was too late”, a resident of the area, Muhammed Abbas, said.

The Nigerian Army, however, gave a different narration of the events.

The spokesperson of the Army’s Operation Lafiya Dole, Mustapha Anka, said the blasts heard were not suicide bombings but controlled explosions by anti-bomb operatives.

“This evening, troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE, intercepted and destroyed 10 suspected Boko Haram terrorists suicide bombers at the outskirts of Maiduguri city,” Mr. Anka, a colonel, said.

“Contrary to earlier media reports and rumours flying around, 2 Boko Haram terrorists suspected suicide bombers earlier intercepted by vigilant troops disclosed their colleagues intent to enter the city with the aim of detonating bombs in selected public places.

“Consequently, the troops laid ambush on the terrorists suspected routes along Damboa road and eliminated them. The suicide bombers were intercepted in 3 different locations approaching the city; Ajiri area towards Damboa road, High Court axis and the Eye Hospital Area.

“The Explosive Ordinance Device team have been mobilized and they are combing the general a area as well as clearing the debris. Normalcy has been restored to the general area and the public are please advised to go about their normal businesses and social activities. However, it is important to maintain more vigilance.”

Sunday’s attacks occurred despite assertions by the President Muhammadu and Information Minister, Lai Mohammed, that the Boko Haram had been defeated.

“They (Boko Haram) are not in a position to threaten Nigeria now, so we have won,” Mr. Buhari told the BBC on Christmas eve.

Technically the media were hearing things in and around Maiduguri, what they heard would not have been gun battle as reported. May be it was the sound of samba celebrating the defeat of Boko Haram. Whoever reported this mischievous news saying that defeated Boko Haram engaged our troops in gun battle must be a saboteur. Mutane Najeriya let us celebrate victory. Praise goes to our leaders: Imam Mohamed Buhari and his announcement minister Alhaji Liar Mohammed.

The dangerous game being play by President Buhari’s propaganda machine is totally shameful. Eyewitness gave a direct account to the events. Nigerian military talking from both sides of the mouth tell lies to cover up lies.
President Buhari continuation of the suppression of the news on Boko Haram will backfire, when the real news gets out.
What’s wrong with telling the truth and getting public support for our efforts in the war against terrorism.
Buhari is wasting too much energy to cover up the reality on ground.
    A very Risky strategy.

    • e_orpheus

I’m sure you’ve read reports of the army killing boko haram operatives and having to perform controlled detonation of their already primed explosives before they could go off.
Now we’ve read reports from witnesses about other events.
Have you paused to consider that the author of this article may have been putting multiple disparate accounts of different events and coming to their own conclusions and not the army declaring that there was no such witness account?
What is the truth? That boko haram have control of northeast nigeria? Or that previously captured areas have all been liberated and boko haram are making occasional run-in attacks that our forces are trying to preempt and curtail?

The loss of innocent souls should call for a sober reflection.

Both President Buhari and Alhaji Lai Muhammed are falsified by this attack in Maiduguri.
They both said Boko Haram has been so defeated it can only place improvised explosive
device by the roadside. But that’s not what’s going on now. What’s been reported here is a
coordinated fighting unit of Boko Haram infantry driving in a military convoy into Maiduguri –
precisely what President Buhari said on Dec 24th has been rendered impossible. Boko Haram
militiamen not only drove into the city they dug in for pitched infantry battle with Nigerian army.
In military terms, that’s not a defeated militia by any means, especially given that Maiduguri is
the Nigerian army’s command and control centre in the fight against Boko Haram, according to
President Buhari’s deployments of army formations in June. Now, Buhari has to explain this.

God bless nigeria and PMB for the good work done to nigeria. Nigeria army is doing something great to help us get out of this mess created by PDP for 16years

  • linkhadj.

Ellfaya, you will certainly rot in hell fire since you can not understand simple grammar as said by Fed. Govt that Book Haram has been so degraded that it is no longer holding any territory in Nigeria but that sporadic attack on soft target will continue for sometime. You are one of the field soldiers of Methu, Fayose, FFK and all other PDPigs. Hell fire is your destination where you will find good companions with Book Haram people. Will Haram never depart from all your Boko affairs.
