The Lone Stars of Liberia and the Super Eagles of Nigeria settled for a 2-2 draw in the first leg final round Africa Nations Cup qualifying match played Saturday night at the SKD Sports Arena in Monorvia.
The Lone Stars drew the first blood as Omega Roberts opened scoring in the first half to put Liberia in the lead.
The Eagles however responded well with two goals from Nosa Igiebor and Ikechukwu Uche who scored from the penalty spot to give Nigeria the advantage going into second half.
The game that has generated much tension saw the presidents of both countries showing interest in seeing their team book a ticket to South Africa for next January’s biannual championship.
On resumption to the second half ,Liberia proved to be the hungrier of the two teams as they dominated play seeking the all important equalizer.
Midway into the second half , thier efforst yielded fruit as CSKA Moscow’s Sekou Jabeth Oliseh put the Lone Stars back on level terms as he capitalized on a mistake from Nigerian goalkeeper, Vincent Emyeama.
The three minutes added time after regulation period was not enough for either side to get a winning goal as referee sounded the final whistle with scores standing at 2-2.
The result looks good enough for the Coach Stephen Keshi tutored side who will now lay ambush for the Liberians who will be coming to Calabar next month for the second leg.
Both teams were missing at the last edition of the Africa Nations Cup hosted by Equatorial Guniea and Gabon, however only one of Nigeria or Liberia will have a chance to stage a return to the 2013 edition to be hosted by South Africa as only one ticket is up for grabs.
