Chibok Schoolgirls: U.S. will not share military intelligence with Nigeria – Officials

Barack Obama
Barack Obama

Sensitive data will not be shared with Nigerian officials amid concerns their ranks have been infiltrated by Boko Haram.

The United States military will not share raw military intelligence with their Nigeria counterparts as both sides work to rescue over 250 girls abducted by Boko Haram, amid concerns over corruption in the Nigerian military and infiltration of the force by Boko Haram, US officials have said.

The U.S. began surveillance flights over north-eastern Nigeria Monday as it leads an international effort to help find the girls kidnapped from a secondary school in Chibok, Borno State a month ago.

The United Kingdom, France, China and Israel are also involved in the mission.

But while the U.S. will be sharing commercial satellite imagery with Nigerian officials, raw military data will be withheld, U.S. State Department officials said.

“At this point, we are not sharing raw intelligence data,” Steve Warren, an Army colonel and Pentagon spokesman, was quoted by the website military.com, as saying.

Mr. Warren declined to give reasons for holding back the information. But the defence website said there are concerns within the U.S. military about corruption in the Nigerian military, and infiltration of by Boko Haram which has killed thousands of people since 2009.

President Goodluck Jonathan has spoken of his government being infiltrated by Boko Haram elements and their sympathizers. Serving Nigerian service men in Borno and Yobe State have also accused their colleagues of leaking operation intelligence to the extremists.

David Rodriguez, an Army General and head of the U.S. Army Africa Command, met with Alex Badeh, Air Chief Marshal and the Nigerian Defence Chief, Tuesday, to work out “protocols” for sharing available data.

Mr. Warren was also quoted as saying that General Rodriguez’ presence in Nigeria had been planned previously, and that he was now working out of the American Embassy in Abuja to coordinate an inter-agency team on assisting in the search for the girls.

The Pentagon has said U.S. Special Forces will have no role in the rescue effort. On Sunday, Defense Secretary, Chuck Hagel, ruled out any such role.

But the U.S. Africa Command said a small team of Special Forces and other troops will deploy in Nigeria in two weeks to train Nigerian Ranger battalion to combat the Boko Haram terror group.

“We want these (Nigerian) soldiers to take the fight to Boko Haram in the restricted terrain and really eliminate the threat within their borders so they can get back to peacekeeping operations,” Lt. Vinnie Garbarino, a USARAF engagements officer, was quoted as saying in an Army release.

Mr. Warren said 16 troops from the Africa Command are currently at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, and are working from the Embassy with FBI and intelligence teams on advising the Nigerian security forces in tracking the girls.

Other U.S. troops currently in Nigeria include 50-60 assigned as staff officers to the Embassy and about 20 Marines who were finishing a brief mission advising Nigerian Navy personnel in Calabar on amphibious operations, Mr. Warren said.

If our leaders haven’t been able to get a tangible solution to BH since 2009, It is only wise to accept any thing the US govt throw @ us as long as it works.

The US decision is absolutely in order

It is a well known fact that most Hausa/Fulani
army officers are either Boko Haram members or Boko Haram sympathizers.

They reveal military plans such as routes and
strategy to Boko Haram, making it easy for Boko Haram to lay ambush for the
soldiers and kill many of them. This is apparently what happened in this case. Major General Abubakar Mohammed and his fellow Hausa/Fulani officers must answer
fore the high rate of military casualty in the fight against Boko Haram

They are also known to post soldiers away from Boko
Haram targets so that BH will carry out their operations successfully without
any interruption. In other cases, they make early response impossible so as to
give BH ample time to carry out their operations. This is particularly common on
    populations dominated by Christians.

The Western powers that are now assisting Nigeria
should investigate and expose such officers as well as Boko Haram sponsors so as
to bring them to book for crimes against humanity.

    • Jakadiya

Hmmm. If You know this much, I suggest you pass the information to the relevant authorities. Also, list the areas of attack by BH so that we can analyze by ourselves. Do you have the statistics of the soldiers killed to confirm your statement? We should be praying for these girls to be returned not to become “Madam Nkechi Off Licence Beer Parlor” analyst.

    • Okey

On this platform, other than expression of painful hate, you have NEVER one day proffered any solution. Nigerians who have an unquenchable hate for another from a shoeless background to preside over them are the ones who have lost and will loose it completely. You can’t set fire on your thatched roof and turn round to blame the Fire Service for arriving late to the scene and for incompetence, that will be the worst degree of insanity. To yourself, be honest.

      • Odeyemi Clara Bukola

I have no painful hate of him but his modus operandi. how can a presidentsought 4help n those who wants to help said ur security chiefs would not be notified of d secrets involved bcos of corruption to me it is appauling n disgraceful to us as a nation. have u read about soldier’s mutiny?

        • Okey

I think we are coming to a convergent point. We have a military where some personnel owe allegiance first to religion and tribe before nation. Will it be fair to blame Jonathan for that?

Being a mole in your army is a complete rejection of the ideal of Nigeria as nation-state. What could justify that if not the doctrine of born-to-rule. Gen. Ihejirika had to contend with this challenge all through his tenure. It is either we fight boko haram for the evil they are or we co-operate with them to achieve our political agenda. I insist that one can’t set fire on one’s thatched roof and turn round to blame the head of the Fire Service for arriving late to the scene or for incompetence, that will be the worst degree of insanity.”

Dont mind U.S.. They did the same thing in Ukraine of recent seh….. Saying they wont share info with Ukrainian forces after they helped in removing a democratic elected gov.. Dont mind them.. it’s part of their lies and game seh… It is nothing about corruption.. it has everything to do with taking control.. And my theory is. Bokoram will continue until Nigeria breaks and U.S can control regionally. After that , they will support one region militarily against the other. The soul plan is to scare their biggest counterpart away from Africa and also to take full control of what passes in and out of their region.. You already have AFRICOM idea.. Just like NATO idea in Europe..

Please dont be deceived at all.. Pls.. C.I.A should stop sponsoring B’haram.

You are a mumu. The USA and the whole world knows that there are senior security personels and politicians who leak information to Boko Haram and that is part of the reason the war has been difficult.

This is the reason why the USA had predicted that we would break up. Of you think that Jonathan is the problem, watch out dor Nigeria after the National Conference and 2015 election and you would conclude that Nigeria is not worth it because of the nomads!

        It is C.I.A seh..

Corruption and inept president have made my dear country Nigeria a laughing stock. This is what U.S. senator John McCains said about president Goodluck Jonathan.

Nigeria’s president is just ‘some guy’
“Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is a consistent, vocal hawk, so it’s not surprising to see that he told The Daily Beast’s Josh Rogin that, as president, he would send troops to Nigeria “without permission of the host country” to rescue the kidnapped schoolgirls. What is surprising, though, is his less-than-diplomatic way of referring to the leader of Africa’s most populous nation.
“I wouldn’t be waiting for some kind of permission from some guy named Goodluck Jonathan,” he said.”
It is shameful and painful but it is the truth.

Jonathan once said ““Everyone talks as if corruption is our number one problem. But corruption is not Nigeria’s biggest problem.”

Nigerians have not held Jonathan responsible for his indifference and impunity toward corruption, So, why are we surprised? Silence by Nigerians towards corruption is tacit approval for the continuation of corruption.

They are the same people.. GEJ is playing along with them to me with the hope it gets to a point where the country will divide. U.S is using our weakness against us to carry out their National interest and playing double game here..

Dont be deceived my sister. GEJ asking for their help proves to me that he is playing along on their side. Because in the situation like this.. You are not suppose to ask for help from the same people that is sponsoring terror.. So he is playing along on their side..

If less than 100 US service personnel can colonize the Obong of Calabar, they damn sure cannot colonize the Obi of Onitsha. The US action is a result of careless talk by your creek clown that BH are in his Cabinet, and corruption that has infested every facet of life in Nigeria including his military. Americans care about their own, Obama will not risk the life of one soldier for the sake of saving your a*s from Dumbo’s ineptitude… kapisch?

Nigerians are in denial about one issue they have all refused to
discuss—corruption. Corruption is at the heart of the Boko Haram
crisis. Everybody wants to talk about Islam and ethnicity as the cause
instead of dealing with corruption. Nigerians will never have peace
until they decide to deal with corruption. The US Armed Forces should
not trust any Nigeria with sensitive information. Nigerians are prepared
to sell their own mother for a few dollars if that is what it takes to
make it in life. These are very inadequate and short-changed people.

    • Okey

Blood lie. Some of us are corrupt but that is not the major reason why the U.S. is withholding data sharing with us. From intelligence, they are aware that some personnel of our military are more loyal to their religious and tribal causes than to the nation and the military they enlisted to serve. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika had most times requested the cut off of telephone services in Borno State so as to disable advance information on military movement and their ambush. With this background, I very much doubt if any serious nation can readily share data in that environment.

      • Guguru

Yes, I understand your denial. It is everything else but what ails Nigeria. I know you spoke to General ihejirika and do you think he is a nice person to deal with?

        • Okey

He dealt a heavy blow on Boko Haram and Boko Haram owners are not happy not happy with him to this day. To that extent “he is not a nice person to deal with”.

          Guru,

See I have one big problem with certain people ” To argue with a person who has renounced the use of reason is like administering medicine to the dead.”

Reason, you will find answer in your reasoning. One thing you need to understand is this is a game played by U.S to secure it’s area of national interest and little do you know that if any part of the country gets broken.

Same U.S will support one against the other. This is the idea of proxy war.
Check also the wikileaks report that says “Boko haram is C.I.A covert operation”. Google it… You will understand better.

          • Balogun Adesina

You dont understand.. Boko haram is C.I.A operation in Nigeria. Nigeria.. The same people..Can you read and understand the above lines ? They are the same people. They had the plan as early as 2005. That is what Pastor Tunde bakare explained in his last video.

In this scenario, we need to send a strong message to Boko haram and its sponsors(C.I.A) but GEJ is not doing that, he rather calls in for Foreign help(The same people – Nigeria is dead). This to me, makes me feel GEJ is part of the Game or playing along. People think he is dumb and clueless.. He’s not ! By doing That is the pretext. For them to come in and split or continue to play the game futher that will lead to breaking up.

The last time I checked we got Independence from these people. We do not need their help. And if Wikkileaks report is anything to believe which I have count and drown a lot of Points from the report then Nigeria is about to become Rice served at Washington DC. Report here

        • Chukwuka Okoroafor

You may want to think about this. Quite often, U.S. diplomats call Nigeria a “strategic West African country” in their words. Think about what that means. Nigeria has some of the best quality crude oil in the world which is Bonny Light Crude. Also, Nigeria has been on the rise as a continental power and potentially beyond. France had seen Nigeria as a threat to its interests in West Africa in the 1980’s with Nigeria’s growing influence over Francophone nations. That is historical fact. The corrupt elements in the U.S. government (I am not saying the entire U.S. government) want more resources and want to ensure that China does not gain a foothold into Africa. What do you think AFRICOM was about? How about the grand prediction of Nigeria’s collapse by 2015 by the CIA? Yar’Adua rejected AFRICOM’s deployment into ECOWAS in 2007 when he visited George W. Bush. Also, Nigerian oil companies have been taking control over the Niger-Delta oil fields. They also struck deals with Kenya to develop its own oil fields. If Nigeria continues this way, the country will become more autonomous and powerful on the world stage and with that, that will lead to a more autonomous Africa which can corner a lot of natural resources. That will certainly hurt Western economies as well as
China and put them at the mercy of Africa. Do you think that a country that wants to maintain its power in the world and that is also in danger of economic collapse will want this? Think long and hard about the things you are saying. This is the same trap those before our generation fell into. I know our military is corrupt and I know that Boko Haram is also backed by some elements in Nigeria that have political interests. They have gotten us into this mess. They are traitors. However, don’t be so naive about the activities of outside powers and their promise of security. The Americans say this among themselves; if you give up your freedom (autonomy) for security, you deserve neither.

          • Balogun Adesina

Thank you my brother.. Please explain to Afam let him hear very well.

He does not understand.. He has watched CNN, ABC, CNBC,BBC too much. Please we need our own media to be in those French speaking countries and also in China, Germany, Russia and France.. Those non speaking English countries.

Thank you one more time.. They are the one sponsoring B’haram and you know Nigria very well.. They will politicize everything. C.I.A should stop sponsoring B;haram.. They had the plans as early as 2005..

          • Chukwuka Okoroafor

Well of course. The CIA is known to have supported groups with Al Qaeda embedded in Syria and Libya. Also, they are not that smart to make predictions about a country ten to fifteen years down the line unless they are going to make it come true.

      • rawsilkysmooth

Do you actually realise how many Nigerians are being massacred quite often by these blood sucking vampires called Boko haram despite the gallant efforts in hunting them down by our security forces only to be sabotaged by elements of corrupt and ethnic bigots embedded in them?

U.S is the most corrupt country in the history of human in this world. No country in the history of human has ever scam the world like in the last recession that lost over 2 trillion dollars of investors money selling fake CDOs.

They are the most corrupt Guru and they even use that corruption in Nigeria as weapon to those bad leaders.. I am afraid. War is going on in Nigeria. These foreign about to become invaders may like to over stay beyond 2014 and take total control of election and the resources in our disposal.

  • Okey

Some of us are corrupt but that is not the major reason why the U.S. is withholding data sharing with us. From intelligence, they are aware that some personnel of our military are more loyal to their religious and tribal causes than to the nation and the military they enlisted to serve. During his time, Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika had most times requested the cut off of telephone services in Borno State so as to disable advance information on military movement and their ambush. With this background, I very much doubt if any serious nation can readily share data in that environment.

Okey. I Think that is why senator John McCain of Arizona.thinks we practically dont have a functional govt. In Nigeria today.that is why he call our president a guy called Jonathan.chai chai diaris God ooooo

      • Okey

Unless you are a toddler with absolutely no capacity to reason well, you will never have missed the fact that John MCcain relies on more on information he reads from our papers which are 90% controlled by anti-govt at the cetnre. I cannot blame him for that, but majority of Nigerians who suffer this mortal threat of political boko haram will never agree with MCcain. That individuals will be in the forces, pursuing religious and tribal acts detrimental to their nation though, is a serious challenge, has nothing to do with Jonathan. It only goes to the question: Are we willing and ready to live together as country whose activities are governed by justice and fairness and not on masters-and-salves basis ?

        • Issei

Bros, remember united states govt, has a functional embassy and this assertion by senator McCain. Is a well known in all the world capitals, you think Americans are like you people who can’t see and differentiate between right and wrong,

          • Okey

You sound you are in your teens. Sure, you are one those that “know” that a state of the United States is on the Moon, from where they see all the things everybody does on Earth.

By the way, was it not American politicians at home and their embassy in South Africa that said, if sanctions were imposed on South Africa, it would hurt the blacks more? Meaning, apartheid should be tolerated and continued. What is America’s position today ?

          • Issei

Okey. Even your Oga at the top admitted on national tv that America is the worlds police man, remember his yarn on Nta about 20billion dollars.chai chai diaris God oooo

          • Okey

            pity !

          • Issei

Okey. Still waiting for you to say something about Oga at the top comments on 20billion dollars on Nta.and his belief about America capacity.

  • King Carlos

Breeze dn dey blow, fowl yansh dn dey open. Now our ineptitude and failure as a nation is now being exposed to the outside world, and the PDP will still say they are on top of the situation. This is a defining moment in our history, i just hope we can fight for other things too

  • Najo

Information sharing? The Americans are out to tract and arrest Abubakar Shekau the way they did to Osama Ben Laden! Remember they did’nt share information with the Pakistanis, another very corrupt country as ours. They will take the GLORY for arresting Shekau; the arrest will be done by some special forces that would likely operate a flight from Niger where they have deployed drones in the fight against the Tuareg rebels in Mali. Please mark my word this day and remember I wrote this: The Americans are out to get Shekau themselves and will like the case of Osama.

  • Afam

The United States military will not share raw military intelligence with their Nigeria counterparts as both sides work to rescue over 250 girls abducted by Boko Haram, amid concerns over corruption in the Nigerian military and infiltration of the force by Boko Haram, US officials have said.

General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division, Nigerian Army, Ahmadu Mohammed, a Major General,…is a sympathizer of boko haram …

    • Balogun Adesina

infiltration by the same ppl.. Dont be so dumb please.. Nigeria ECOMog that rescued liberia can’t stop terrorism in Nigeria ??

“If insurgents last for more than 24 hours then the government is involved.” Late Abacha.

The government involved here is C.I.A and i am even suspecting GEJ on their side and also Borno gov..

Even up to this moment we do not have pictures of those girls missing. How do we cross check by the time they claim these are the girls missing.. How do we cross check if it’s true or not ?

Dont be fooled by the gamers.

Very smart move on the part of Obama. It’s a fall-out of corruption, religious and ethnic governance by Johnny Dumbo that no smart man would trust him with sensitive info. Corruption: Soldiers who went on mutiny in Maidugiri claim they’re not being paid; Religion: After all the abuses of Islam and claims that APC is Islamic party behind the BH, Muslim soldiers will tend to circumvent military operation; and Ed Clark and Asari mouthing off at every none Ijaw means Ijaws should go and rescue our girls, not just stealing our Treasury dry from NNPC to Amnesty Program. So, no sense risking American lives by collaborating fully with corrupt Nigerian security personnel. All we want them to do is help us rescue the girls and go back to their AFRICOM base, it’s a moral duty they’re offering Pro Bono while Dumbo and his goons steal N365bn/yr as Security Vote… Thieves!

  • Paul

They are too corrupt to handle any intelligence information. A Nigerian high military official will easily reveal such information anytime he is in a hotel room with a female student. They are all too inept and backward to keep confidential and intelligence information. Please don’t do it.

  • Paul

Afterall, this inept Jonathan has said that he will not reveal the names of those sponsoring Boko Haram in Nigeria. This is a president that does not give a damn about Nigerians and their problems. My question is, has Jonathan even gone to Chibok to find out first hand how his government dropped the ball and allow Boko Haram to cart away well over 300 innocent school children under his watch as the president of the country? A serious minded president would’ve travelled to Chibok immediate the news broke out and all the military should have been deployed at that very moment to protect those girls from abduction. Afterall, Boko Haram kept those girls in a building near the school for more than 11 days, still no rescue efforts from Jonathan and his inept military during that period. This is serious failure on the part of Jonathan, that should warrant his immediate impeachment. Why must the US government share any serious intelligence with such a clown?

  • Man_Enough

soon we will wake up to hear that shecow is in detention in USA.

  • Chukwuka Okoroafor

Well this is extremely dangerous. This is what I meant by the fact that our national security is threatened. The U.S. will know more than our government about Nigeria and some people are quite shameless about cheering this. Remember that you can pay dearly for giving up your autonomy for the promise of security. You normally get neither.

  • Mr Igbo Sanity

I applaud the US for their decision. I noted on this forum more than a week ago that US should not share any info with patently Corrupt Jona/pdp regime because jona/pdp been behind Boko Attacks for nearly SIX YEARS.

  • Eshiett Udok

Jonathan is trying his best. The issue here is complete sabotage
