Nigeria formally protests slander of citizens by U.S. Senator

“They (Nigerian scammers) all have been hired to run the Obamacare website,” the senator was quoted as saying.

The Nigeria Embassy in Washington on Friday formally protested the slandering of its citizens as `scammers’ by U.S. Senator, Ted Cruz of Texas, on Monday.

“You are no doubt aware of the reaction of Nigerians and friends of Nigeria to a statement credited to your good self on the above.

“Our immediate reaction at the Embassy is to assume that you were wrongly quoted and that the statement would be denied. We are, however, surprised that this has not happened.

“We have no choice than to assume that the statement was deliberately made by you,’’ Ade Adefuye, Nigeria’s Ambassador to the U.S., said in a letter addressed to the congressman on Friday.

“For a start, we are shocked that a high profile senator of a country, which is at the forefront in building a peaceful and stable world in which nations and peoples treat each other with mutual respect could be engaged in an act which offends the sensitivities of an important component of his constituency.

“Distinguished senator, I am sure you are sufficiently familiar with the constructive contributions which Nigerians have made to economic, social and political lives of Texas, especially in the Houston area.

“Every country has its own share of law breakers. To use the activities of few as an opportunity to cast aspersions on the integrity of a country and its people is not only unfair but also excessively offensive.

“You yourself made the point that the so-called e-mail scammers have disappeared from the scene. But it is not because they were recruited to work on Obamacare.

“It is because of the successful efforts of our government working through the embassy and the international law enforcing agents to curb the activities of these few law breakers,’’ the envoy said.

He, however, noted that it was not the practice of any Nigerian diplomatic mission to interfere in the domestic affairs of the host country.

Mr. Adefuye added that Nigeria would not sit back, fold its arms while a politician assaulted the integrity of the country and people in the process of appeasing the base instincts of a few misguided elements in his constituency.

“Distinguished senator, the least we can say is that Nigerians feel offended by you. They demand an apology,’’ Mr. Adefuye said.

More Nigerians react.

More Nigerians have expressed displeasure over the remarks made Mr. Cruz.

Mr. Cruz was quoted as saying that the new Affordable Care Act exchange Website of the U.S. was being run by Nigerian email scammers.

“You may have noticed that all the Nigerian email scammers have become a lot less active lately,” Mr. Cruz was quoted by U.S. media as saying at a gathering with supporters in Houston. “They all have been hired to run the Obamacare website.”

Habib Habu, the Consul General, Consulate General of Nigeria in New York, urged the senator to withdraw the comment and offer unreserved apology to Nigeria and Nigerians.

“I would remind Senator Cruz that Nigerians are the most educated immigrant community in the U.S.

“There is no sphere of human endeavour that a Nigerian has not excelled in the U.S…

“Nigeria doesn’t deserve this unfortunate and unwarranted maligning of its people for a cheap political shot,’’ Mr. Habu said in a note to the North America correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday.

Acho Orabuchi, a Nigerian Community leader in the U.S., said it was rather unfortunate and unbecoming of a Senator of the U.S. to denigrate another country, especially a friendly country to the U.S…

“For Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) to ridicule and disparage Nigeria and its citizens in an effort to appeal to his Tea Party congregation or political base is beneath his esteemed office.

“In fact, I’m appalled and terribly disappointed in Sen. Ted Cruz’s comment about Nigeria.

“Nigeria is a peace-loving country that cherishes its friendship with the U.S., I hope that people like Sen. Cruz would not strain a relationship that has been nurtured for so long.

“It will be appropriate for Sen. Cruz to apologise to Nigeria and Nigerians, who are law-abiding citizens of the U.S,’’ Mr. Orabuchi said.

Senator Ted craze abi Cruz is a mad madman who is working had to bring his own country down. He should think about how he can save America which is in serious crisis due to the activities of people like him.

If the so called Nigerians are spammers as they said ,they colonized Nigerians and thought them “Nigerians” how to spam but we are more than them now, let them search within themselves among every 5 of their citizens ” 1 ” however is a spammers .they hide their secret of spamming and move on to publishing that of other nation. The they really know that, we are better than them Educationally, maybe is just part of removing their stressed of jealousy to Nigerians that are hard working and are doing better than them in the state,my regard to the Nigeria Embassy in Washington.

While Nigerian immigrants in the US and globally should legitimately protest this obviously prejudiced and hate comment from Senator Ted Cruz from Texas, we must not forget that Senator Cruz is a Republican. Any American citizen knows who the Republicans are. The Republican party is an extreme right wing party-which comes out as an exclusive, white Anglo Saxon only, and extremist party. The views of the mass of the Republican Party base is even more extremist, racist and hating than Senator Cruz’s comments. The Republican Party is an anti-immigration party so they do not care about anyone except themselves. This explains why Americans believe and know that the Republican party in the US like most conservative parties-given their views on issues-is living in the past-perhaps somewhere in the stone age medieval period. More importantly, If you check properly, the Republicans are pained that the ObamaCare which is a popular Affordable Health Care program for the working people who may employed today but out out of job tomorrow is popular, hence their attack is ACTUALLY on President Obama’s ObamaCare health policy given its popularity with the mass of Americans. The Republican party does not like that they lost out in their recent shut down of the American govt in their uncritical and unenlightened and class driven opposition to the ObamaCare. So they will use any means to fight back. So attacking a major component of the American population and voting public-the Nigerian Diaspora in the US-must be a way the Republican party are venting their frustration at the fact that they failed to nail the Obamacare during their last budget struggle with President Barak Obama. As far as I am concerned, as a Nigerian-American, I rate Senator Cruz very low, actually beneath any serious intellectual engagement on any serious issue. Even when we must press our rights not to be insulted and treated rudely by a right wing such as Cruz, I really do not think a Senator like Cruz matters. I rate him very low. And I speak as an American of Nigerian extraction.

I have noticed and observed that “distinguished Senator” has become so sinister that he does not have respect for authority or even nations.he should be careful of his comments.

  • Dan maikoko

How I wish Nigeria could do something more than this feeble protest. Unfortunately our officials of state are so corrupt and cheap at it that a few thousand dollars to our legislators can lead the lifting of a ban on the export of oil to the US. The Senator knows the people he is insulting; there is no consequencies. I doubt if GEJ has heard about the insult and the way he worships the US no one should expect any comments from him.

Well our former Minister of Foreign Affairs would have handle this issue and the man involved Ted Cruz whatever in a way and manner that we Nigerians will be proud of. He would shown to Ted that he lack the moral impratur to make such a derogatory statement about our beloved country.

  • Jr IBE

A very good reaction by the Ambassador, I’m really proud seeing this. Good job

  • Lanre

Ted Cruz is a bigot. I am not bothered about it. Let Nigeria fix itself. There are more scammers in the U.S than in Nigeria. The only difference is they go to prison. In Nigeria, they are celebrated.

Whenever I hear this Cruz man talk, I cannot but wonder how his reported good education failed to reflect in who he has become. I blame the American fringe that supports a character like Cruz. Cruz is a natural-born Canadian of an American mother and a Cuban father. If he destroys United States as he tried to do by blowing US’s credit, he does not need a passport to go back to Canada but the fools who were cheering him on have no other country but they were too stupid to realize that Cruz is trying to destroy them. My advice will be that whenever any Nigerian happens to be in any press conference or town hall meeting addressed by Cruz, that Nigerian should take Cruz up on his uncivil remarks. The Nigerian should refer Cruz to America’s Greed Program on CNBC.
History showed that most great empires collapse due to internal crisis rather than external aggression. The near implosion of the US in recent times, which is orchestrated by the lunatic fringe of which Cruz is a symbol, is a cause for concern.
Back to our home land, we need to elect a president who has a vision for a strong and virile Nigeria and is capable of accomplishing that. With the human and material resources that Nigeria is endowed with, there is no reason for the country to be in its present state. Cruz would never make such idiotic statement about the smallest European country.

  • Jadesola Fakayode

Senator Cruz, I have a question for you. Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff and German Chancellor Angela Merkel
have both condemned the widespread snooping- technically and morally there is no difference between this snooping and scamming- by the U.S. National
Security Agency. Both highly respected female world leaders Rousseff and Merkel- therefore proposed an anti spying resolution in the United Nations. This is coming on the heels of Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany’s accusation that your country the United States of America was SPYING into her PRIVATE PHONES! It means you Senator Cruz as an American Senator, you are part of an American state apparatus that committed huge illegality and brazen unethical act by (i) PRYING into the phones of world leaders, and (ii) PRYING into the phones of some world leaders who are women! I can understand (even when it is bad) when men spy into men’s affairs. But I cant just understand men putting their state and govt noses into the affairs of women who at the same time are highly regarded world leaders. There is something called decency in basic relations. Your country seemed to have crossed that line. Your immoral behavior has no limit! Listening to women’s phones? My God! It sends a chill down my spine. In international relations -you may know and you may not know-both state sponsored terrorism and individual and group sponsored terrorism are bad and condemnable. The same is applicable to govts and states and individual scamming, spying, prying, and just entering the privacies of people illegally and un-ethically-which scamming and spying and prying are. So there is no difference between individuals who scam and state and govts which scam. They are both condemnable and bad. So Mr. Senator Cruz of Texas US, what do you think of all these in general? In particular what do you think of the accusation of Chancellor Angela Merkel the German leader, a world leader whose privacy you and your govt SCAMMED AND SPIED into? Yes, the Nigerian state will deal with the few individual Nigerians who scam. And private Nigerians deal everyday with these few criminals too. We expose their criminality to the world because they do not represent us. And those who relate to us Nigerians know this-that the few criminals do not represent us. But what about you and your govt Mr. Cruz? It is a disaster of unquantifiable proportion when a whole state and govt -the American state and govt -SCAM and illegally break into the privacies of fellow world leaders. it is a shame. Please remove the log in your eyes first, we have always removed the mote in our eyes as Nigerians, then we can talk. Do you understand this Republican senator Cruz? We know Republican party in the US is a bunch of haughty hypocrites and sometimes people doubt the level of education and literacy and enlightenment of some of the leaders of this backward and retarded Republican party. I agree with those who claim that perhaps your party is still living in that backward period of human kind where values and dignity are put on the way people look-in other words racism-the backward and un-educated period of human race where values are allocated to people based on their races and ethnicity! I am sure that given the acute illiteracy in your party-Republican Party-you are shocked to see people of all races and ethnicities competing equally on all grounds and in all fields. You are shocked that this equity has called to question the silly view of the past that some race is more “intelligent” than some other races. YOUR WASP(White Anglo Saxon Protestant) party cannot just cope with this. You are shocked that there are Professors, engineers, scientists, career people, doctors, researchers-men and women etc from all races and ethnicity competing with equity in the public domain. Your party given its often backward views is just unable to cope with this reality. This has shattered the myth you want to keep going that some races are more “intelligent” than others. You forgot how the antecedents of your party kept people of other races down by denying them basic EDUCATION. You denied them BASIC EDUCATION, you turned around to say “eh they are not good, they are not “intelligent”!!! When your myth you want to sustain has been shattered by new reality, you become uncomfortable. You want to eat your cake and have it. An untenable racist macho myth is shattered right before your eyes by the achievements of all races and gender on equal grounds, you can no longer cope. Your party is therefore frustrated and helpless. If there is a party that has brought the American image to an abysmal disrepute, it is your party (your party both in the past and in the contemporary period), the out of tune, and extremely backward conservatives in your party. Please deal with your hypocrisy and the problem your party causes America all the time next time before you open your mouth to gas and gaffe!

Shameful country like USA should call this drug addict to order,EU and UN are working hard now to check the way US government and their agents are poke nosing into peoples privacy…The said senator should watch his mouth…

  • Olayinka

What are Nigerians protesting? Is it not a fact that they introduce 419 in the world? Is it not true that they are in drug trafficking, human trafficking and fake and adulterated drugs smuggle? Is it not they in money laundering? Blame the Igbo’s and not Sen Cruz. They are the ones giving Nigeria a bad name.
