The lawyer threatened to sue the EFCC if it fails to take action.

A Lagos lawyer and human rights activist, Femi Falana, has written the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, demanding an immediate investigation into the purchase of two armoured cars by the Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah.

In the letter, dated October 18, and signed on behalf of Mr. Falana by Samuel Ogala, the human rights lawyer warned that if the Commission failed to accede to his request within seven days, he would go to court to compel it to do so.

The media aide to the minister, Joe Obi, had confirmed on Wednesday that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, an agency under the ministry, purchased the two BMW armoured vehicles for his boss at a cost of N255 million.

The confirmation induced outrage across the nation as many Nigerians demanded an investigation into the purchase of the vehicles, while others called for the Minister’s resignation.

Mr. Falana, in the letter titled “Request for Investigation of Economic Crimes of Fraud and Extortion of the sum of N255 million by the Aviation minister, Ms Stella Oduah,” condemned the claim that the vehicles were procured because the minister’s life was being threatened.

He alleged that the threats were never reported to the police, adding that since the money was not budgeted for and NCAA overshot its authorized budgetary expenditure, Ms. Oduah grossly abused her office by extorting the money from the agency.

The letter, addressed to the EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Lamorde, also noted that the money was not appropriated by the National Assembly.

“In the light of the foregoing we request you to investigate the economic crimes of fraud and extortion committed by the Aviation Minister, Ms. Stella Oduah and her cohorts in the NCAA.

“Take notice that if you fail to accede to our request within the next seven days we shall not hesitate to pray the Federal High Court to compel your Commission to discharge its statutory duty in respect of our complaint,” Mr. Falana threatened.
