‘God is angry’ with Northern Nigeria- Dokubo Asari

Mujahid Asari-Dokubo
Mujahid Asari-Dokubo

Ex-Niger Delta militant, Dokubo Asari, has blamed northern elites for the Boko Haram insurgency and ‘backwardness’ of the region.

In an exclusive interview with Rariya Newspaper, Mr. Asari said northerners should pray for forgiveness because they are facing the wrath of God.

“For how many years the ruling oligarchy of the north has been encouraging oppression? The people of the north are poor, they did not benefit from the years of criminal, immoral ravaging of the lands of Ogonis, Ijaws, Urhobos, Itsekiris and others. The people are watching. They are going to Dubai, London and everywhere to buy house. They are sending their children abroad. They forgot God. They forgot that there are so many children roaming the street. All these things, one day a Daniel will come to judgement. And that is it, it has come to judgement, and the people are confronting them,” he said.

“What is happening in the north is the north creates a monster, and the monster is consuming them. God is angry with the north. Let them cry to Allah for forgiveness.”

Mr. Asari said it would be difficult for a Northerner to win the 2015 presidential election as the fear of Boko Haram will prevent people in the region from coming out to vote on election day.

An Ijaw sovereign state

Mr. Asari who traced the struggle of the people of the Niger Delta to the Battle of Akasa between the British and the people of Nimbe Brass, said he is not interested in resource control for the people of the Niger Delta but for an independent Ijaw State.

“For me as an individual, I’m not involved in resources control. I believe first in what Kwame Nkrumah said: ‘‘seek ye first the political kingdom, and all other things will be added to you.’’ What I believe in is an independence of my people.

“Yes, my position is quite different from what others are fighting for. My position is an independent nation. It is an undeniable right of our people to fight for the independence of our country, which has not been extinguished because we signed a protracted treaty with Britain. We did not surrender our sovereignty to Britain to be colonised. So as far as those treaties are the 1914 amalgamation of Nigeria is illegal, null and void. So also the declaration of independence in 1960 and also the declaration of Nigeria in 1966 as a republic are also illegal,” he said.

I only care about Ijaws

The former militant who only recently criticised President Goodluck Jonathan for running an inept government said he only cares about the Ijaw people and by relation, the Igbo and other ethnic groups of the Niger Delta.

“I have always said that, I’m fighting for the independence of my people, the Ijaw people. I don’t have any feeling than the feeling of an Ijaw man. That is the truth. And the feelings of the wellbeing of Niger Delta and Igbo people, because I share blood with Igbo. I’m an Ijaw, an Igbo and a Niger Deltan. I don’t have any feeling with any other people.”

He said he has not ceased his fight for a sovereign Ijaw State but is only on “sabbatical” as it is inappropriate to fight with one’s brother (a reference to Mr. Jonathan who is from the Ijaw ethnic group as well).

He also claimed that he was not part of the amnesty deal the federal government signed with the Niger Delta militants, saying “I will not use my hand to trade away my freedom.”

Dialogue with Boko Haram

Mr. Asari, who claimed he spent time in prison with some leaders of the Islamist sect, Boko Haram,  said the only way out of the insurgency is through dialogue.

“From the very beginning I was one of those people who asked the government to dialogue with them. I was in prison with some of them. I was with Mohammed Ashafa at Kuje prison; I was in SSS underground prison with Mohammed Isa, Hussain and Yusuf, Murtada and others. Late Mohammed Yusuf left SSS underground prison few days before I was put in there. Dialogue is the only solution. As far as I’m concerned, both government and Boko Haram cannot win this war. The bloodshed should be stopped. It will not remove anything from the part of government of President Jonathan to dialogue with this people,” he said.

Since u only care for ur ‘own’,how does the problem of the North concern u? Stop meddling into their affairs and shut ur trap. Its their region, their problems. Go and face urs!

  • patriotic Nigerian

Is this man even wanted cos he’s a traitor. An enemy of the State.

  • oghreco

Asari Dokubo is only seeking relevance. He does not represent anybody in the Niger Delta but himself. I’m surprised the press giving him this avenue to express his poorly thought out positions on contemporary issues.

  • Easy

It would be very difficult indeed to see GEJ parley with the BH terrorists. As a Christian, who has seem this group glory in the slaughter of innocent civilian – men, women and children, it is unthinkable. The Northern elite through their condescending and patronizing attitude to the poor are the creators of the sect. They have armed them in the mistaken believe that hey could always exercise control over the poor and use them to fight their perceived enemies. Like the Parisees of our era, they enjoy looking down on others who are less fortunate. They love to see the poor Almajiri rolling around on the floor singing their praise. At the end of this ritual humiliation, they toss a few Naira on the floor to complete the madness. This narrow pursuit of self interest has led to the highest number of billionaires in the country coming from the North through thievery. They take all the money abroad to Arabia and elsewhere leaving the North and Nigerian in general the loser.

Yet not az single northerner was ever convicted and jailed for stealing billions either in Nigeria or abroad. What about your region? Tinubu, Alams, Ibori, Ibru…

      • anonymous

ibru, Elumelu, Akingbola, etc, etc,, Google this and see for urself…The Poor Northerners

      • Laide

Judging by the quality of your comments, one can not but conclude that you are versed in contemporary issues in Nigeria, however, by including Tinubu in your list, one is not sure if it was an innocent mistake or a delibrate misinformation. Tinubu has never been convincted by any court of law either in Nigeria or anywhere else in the world. Besides, Tinubu is a Yoruba man from the South West, and we the Yorubas see the hausa – fulanis as our brothers. We have never have any serious problem with them. We were only trying to be fair when we voted for Dr Goodluck Jonathan. However, it was not long before we realised it was big mistake which we now deeply regret. Such will never happen again.President Jonathan will not get 1% of the Yoruba votes again. It is absolutely certain. We just cant wait to get rid of him. Many have vowed to offer all if they dared try to rig South Western votes come 2015.

        • Wale

Idiot speak for yourself and not the whole SW. do you think the SW will want to align with the people that killed innocent Yoruba corps members in the name of election riots? the same people that denied us Abiola? that has kept Nigeria at a comatose level since independence? do you think we will align with people who hate progress so much that they will kill innocent women who came to immunize their children? think again and speak for yourself.

        • Eddy

As a Souutherner who is not of Yoruba extraction, I am deeply hurt. Ha,ha, ha, ha, ha. This sounds like grovelling if I ever saw one. What are you after?

          • Olubunmi

Eddy, thats exactly the way we feel in the South West, and we owed no one any apology over that. Do you think your brother have been fair to the Yorubas? Is he acting like the President of Nigeria and all Nigerians?

          • Eddy

All I am saying is to have some dignity. Remember that the Ibos have not tasted the hot seat of power, since the devil was a boy.

      • Kayode Adesola

dan maikoko, it will not serve your interest or the interest of any so-called ethnic group to ethnicise corruption or morals. Robbery of our treasury is a class issue in Nigeria, it is not an ethnic issue. But if you think you are right, then I will pout this on your face-(i) the “North” has been in power since 1960-1990s and the North remains poor, where did that money go? (ii) Babangida is a Northerner, except you are baby in Nigerian politics, we all know that Babangida’s regime formalise corruption in Nigeria. (iii) In more contemporary Nigeria, we actually saw in a video a whole member of house of representative-Mr. “Integrity” Lawan Farouk hiding bribe, corruption and blood money in his cap and Babaringa ! Lawan Farouk is Northerner. he still shamelessly sits in the House of representative representing a Northern constituency. What do you say about that? When members of the intelligentsia from the western part of our country are critical of the thieves amongst them, DO NOT mistake that as a weakness. They want Nigeria, but they know Nigeria. They want the morally best to come out of their own part of the country. They know Nigeria because they know that if they go all out to hit the thieves out of their own part of the country, they will be accused of playing ethnic politics. So they(the Yorubas) as liberal democrats raise the moral standards in their own part of the country by exposing the thieves among them and they expect sincere, honest liberal democrats in other parts of the country to do same. If you cannot do same, then it is too bad. But beside the thieves like Farouk Lawan, Abacha, Babangida, Bamanga Tukur’s oil thieve son, Ahmadu Ali Oil thieve son, the stinking poverty in the North inspite of the living testimony that the North was in power between 1960 and 1990s show that the “North” seethes in corruption. Okay? My advice to you is that you should not start the ethnicisation of corruption, (try to expose the thieves within the North as others do ) if you try it, we will throw everything at your face.

      • Easy

This is only a testament to the corrupt Judiciary. Ibori was set free by the Nigerian courts remember? Abacha’s loot in Switzaland has been returned, no conviction there. The Loots in possession of IBB, Abubakar, Buhari and others are unreachable because of political connection/corruption. Surely, you know this to be the case?

      • akinyanju

Dan Maikoko, someone said Mr. “Integrity” Farouk Lawan, a northern member of house of representathieves collected bribe and blood money and hid it in his looooong cap and babaringa! (that is just one example, and that is enough because it is a waste of time to give you the endless list of the northern thieves). And wait a minute aboki, “Integrity” Farouk Lawan is still a member of the house of representathieves, and he is NOT representing a western/eastern or south south constituency. “Integrity” Farouk lawan is still representing a NORTHERN constituency. That stinks! A common thief is still repsresenting you in the house of “law” and you cannot even take him to task. You know in the west we will be on him pounding him publicly. Unfortunately you did not see this before you made your careless statement. And I think what Kayode is saying is that the North is what it is TODAY, poor and reeling in poverty because people like you PROTECT your thieves while others-at least-people in the western part of the country- take them to the gutters and gallows publicly. You can see that in their writeups, and you can see why they make some basic progress, for their thieves know that they have to contend with us when they get back to their (western) constituencies. Dan maikoko, your own thieves do not even have respect for you, that explains the sickening level of poverty in your part of our country. Next time please watch what you say.

        • Mahmoud Tukur

Farouk is still in the House of Representathieves because he is following the examples of Ndudi Elumelu, Patricia Etteh, Dimeji Bank-ole to mention but few. That is a common practice by all of them in the house be them from North, South , East , west, Centre, top and bottom of Nigeria. United they are under the umbrella of ULN (united looters of Nigeria). Each section is protecting their thieves and visionless leaders while criticizing another section. The resultant consequence is that we remain backward with no future for our children, only to be condemning one another on the pages of internet.

          • akinyanju

Mahmoud, I think you should direct your observation to the “northerner” Dan Maikoko. Please read his posts about this issue. It is above. But if you do not have time, I will cut and paste for you to SEE . Here is what northerner Dan maikoko posted:Yet not az single northerner was ever convicted and jailed for stealing billions either in Nigeria or abroad. What about your region? Tinubu,
Alams, Ibori, Ibru… ” Mr. Mahmoud Tukur, I am quoting Dan maikoko DIRECTLY. What do yu think.? When someone made such a costly and unguarded post, then we go all out to REMIND him/her so that he KNOWS and stop the silly ethnicisation. My post is DELIBERATE and it is IN YOUR FACE post so that dan maikoko should LEARN!!! how to be more historical. So please DIRECT your observation to Dan maikoko except you want to tell me that Dan maikoko is right in his a-historical post. Or what do yu think Tukur? You need to engage Dan maikoko. Okay?

          • Mahmoud Tukur

Akin, I read his comment and yours too. Except for the few names I mentioned to show you the likes of Farouk who are still in the house, mine was a general comment only that I posted it like reply to you. We should all be concerned about how we are made to be polarized, viewing every action (corruption inclusive) with ethnicity or religiosity, while they are united in looting. There is no corner of this country where you will not find poverty or that do not have corrupt and inept leaders. People need to understand and be wise to realise what the likes of Asari Dokubo are up to.

  • Bazamfare-Iro

Hear him “asari is only concerned of the weebeing of Niger Delta and IGBO people” Hahaha! this is only a joke. Igbos will never forget their ABANDON properties in downtown Port-Harcourt. Asari was occupying one in Aggrey road before he was forcebly evicted by his opponents in 2005.

  • sepsis

Alhaji Dokubo is a well trained messenger of Isam. He speaks for Allah, the god of suicide bombing…

  • ABOKI

IS THAT WHAT YOU AND UR GOD DISCUSSED ?

  • usman06

Could this be the real agenda behind the BH disaster? I’ve heard it whispered but God is causing the bi-polar brain of Asari Dokubo to actually say it in print! Wow. Is this the plan?:
Mr. Asari said it would be difficult for a Northerner to win the 2015 presidential election as the fear of Boko Haram will prevent people in the region from coming out to vote on election day.

    • Dan maikoko

If the people in the region do not vote, the election will be invalid and the chief judge at that time will have to be sworn in as president. Or do you think GEJ or any president will win an election without the north? ” In ka san wata ai baka san wata ba.”

What region of Nigeria does this statement not apply to? The Dukubos are a testimony that there is no peace or advancement in the SS, the ritual murderers, gang rapists, political assassins, and kidnappers found every where in the south are your own brand of Boko haram. the children of your elites such as Diezani, Orubebe are all studying abroad. Your kids roam the street stealing while ours in the north roam the streets begging, what is the difference. Your schools are as dilapidated as any in the north. We have the same curricullum and the the same annual turnover of “illiterate graduates” and confirmed cases of exam fraudsters like Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan whos PhD theses have never been found. The supposedly best and the brightest from the south-south is president today, where is the example of good governance?

    • anonymous

You hv said it all. You need to come to Warri, the so called OIL CITYY where most ppl hv to steal or do ashawo to make a living….the schools? check DELSU, UNIPORT and see wonders.. The President is the best they hv to offer and that is funny…

  • Dan maikoko

Dialogue is the way out. The most important statement of truth from Asari. The govt turn its gun against its citizens instead of turning the law and due process. They killed thousands in maiduguri in 2009. Yaraduwa himself was appalled at the extent of unlawful killings that day and set up an investigative committee to find out what happenned. He died before the results were in. GEJ must see this crisis as a case of boko haram and govt. The attack on the Emir of Kano should have put to rest any suspicion that Boko haram is set up by the northern elite to oust Jonathan. I know it is asking for too much from GEJ because of his level of understanding of Nigeria and the north in particular. Dokubo should press the dialogue option further as the presidents lack of understanding has cost a lot of lives.

“He said he has not ceased his fight for a sovereign Ijaw State but is only on “sabbatical” as it is inappropriate to fight with one’s brother (a reference to Mr. Jonathan who is from the Ijaw ethnic group as well).”

This guy should shut his big mouth, who does he think he is fooling? We all know he has been quiet as a result of the pipeline and marine security contracts that were awarded to him and other ex-militant leaders and was openly and vigorously defended by his wife on social media last year. Remember how he and his wife have been feting and praising President Jonathan throughout which came to a head last year when the wife was cursing and barking at anyone who dares to criticise Jonathan, remember her rants on her Facebook page:

Now that the president has refused to renew these contracts, Asari Dokubo has become a critic, bull-crap. He should go and enjoy his ill-gotten wealth and let the rest of us be. It is only in Nigeria would someone of his pedigree be relevant, shame!
