The ember months in Zamfara witnessed many fatal accidents.
A total of 64 people died in 102 road traffic accidents involving in Zamfara during the “ember” months of 2012, Ibrahim Abubakar, the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, commander in the state, said.
The accidents involved 121 vehicles while the ember months are from September to December.
Mr. Abubakar said this in Gusau on Monday, pointing out that the situation was in spite of the intensive safe driving public awareness campaign by the FRSC.
He said 302 people sustained various degrees of injuries in the accidents and attributed the high death toll to reckless driving by commercial vehicle drivers.
Mr. Abubakar decried the reckless attitude of some drivers and recalled how the driver of a Gulf car loaded 10 passengers and killed all of them in an accident also involving a bus carrying 18 passengers, who also died on the spot.
Mr. Abubakar urged motorists in the state to strictly observe traffic regulations in order to reduce the number of accidents.
He said that the FRSC had embarked on aggressive awareness campaigns for a change of attitude by commercial vehicle drivers to instill traffic discipline in them. He urged motorists to cooperate with officials of Corps in their current efforts to ensure safety and security of lives and property on the highways.
