A former Minister of Information, Dora Akunyili, has debunked rumours of her ambition to contest the Anambra governorship election in November 2013.

Ms. Akunyili, who made this known when she addressed newsmen in Awka on Thursday, described the rumour as a big distraction.
“Must I run for every election, it is an unnecessary distraction,” she said, noting that she might eventually re-contest the senatorial position “when the time is ripe’’.

The Anambra governorship seat will become vacant inFebruary  2014 as the incumbent, Peter Obi, will round-off his second term in office and is no longer eligible to contest.

Mrs. Akunyili challenged and lost the Anambra Senatorial election to Chris Ngige of the Action Congress of Nigeria. Rumours had been spread that she would vie for the 2013 governorship election instead of waiting till 2015 to re-contest for the Senate.

Ms. Akunyili, a former Director-General of the National Agency for Food, Drugs, Administration and Control, NAFDAC, added that “when the time comes I will run for it (Senate) and safeguard my vote’’.

She warned rumour mongers to desist from spreading rumours of any governorship ambition.
