Ogun PDP has had internal issues.
A mild drama ensued at the headquarters of the Ogun State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as a faction of the party loyal to former President Olusegun Obasanjo took over the building unchallenged.
There has been great rivalry between Mr. Obasanjo’s faction and another faction loyal to the former state governor, Gbenga Daniel. Both camps had struggled over various issues including possession of the headquarters, located along the presidential boulevard in Abeokuta.
For a long time, Mr. Daniel’s faction, which is being financed by a wealthy politician, Buruji Kashamu, had been using the secretariat for its operations.
However, the solace that Mr. Daniel’s faction enjoyed at the secretariat ended when on Friday, the former president’s camp ejected them and took over the secretariat.
While some members of the new occupants engaged in series of meetings, others in their scores were seen jubilating within the secretariat.
It is not clear why there was no resistance by Mr. Daniel’s faction in the takeover as it seemed an easy victory for the former president’s camp. It is also not certain if the evicted party is gearing up for a fight to reclaim the secretariat.
At the secretariat, the party’s factional Publicity Secretary, Bidemi Osunbiyi, said the ejected faction were illegal tenants of the secretariat.
“Yes it is true that we have taken over the secretariat,” Mr. Osunbiyi said. “We just held a meeting after the takeover, we are not fighting anybody, there is no thuggery.”
