Flood: Bishop decries congestion in Edo relief camps

Published:

The relief camps in Etsako Central and Etsako East Local Government Areas of Edo are congested; causing people, displaced from floods, to live under dire conditions.

While lamenting the situation, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Auchi, Gabriel Dunia, who went round the camps on Monday to distribute relief materials to the displaced, appealed to the federal and state governments to provide adequate assistance to the victims of the flood.

He said the crowded nature of the camp is not dignifying to the people. Mr. Dunia also appealed to government at all levels to be proactive in responding to environmental warnings, in order to prevent the kind of destructions being witnessed

He donated relief items, including food items, toiletries, clothes and cash,  to the camp residents on behalf of the Auchi Catholic Diocese.

“This is meant to temporarily settle you; we will now go back and work on a long-term solution.

“We quite understand how you feel; when one considers that you have been forced out of your homes by natural disaster, that you have no industry where you take care of your household,” the cleric said.

He asked the displaced not to rush back home until they were asked to by relevant authorities.
