The extremist group, Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati Wal-Jihadl, popularly called Boko Haram, today named more media houses and staff as targets of its attack (find full transcript of video below).

In an 18-minute video, the group threatened to attack more media houses, naming Voice of America (Hausa), Radio France (Hausa), Daily Trust, Guardian Newspapers, among others.

In part, the video contained footages of the THISDAY blast site apparently downloaded from the websites of CHANNELS TV and PREMIUM TIMES.

The group also gave reasons why it bombed Thisday office in Abuja and other media houses last Thursday.

“This is a message from jamaatu ahlis sunnah lil daawati wal jihad, and we wish to inform Nigerians our reasons for attacking some media houses,” the group said.

The video also shows that the radical group carried a live coverage of the bombing in Abuja and filmed the explosion at Thisday.

The group created the new Youtube video under the name Alhaji Mani.

“This is a message from the public awareness department of the Jamatu Ahlis sunnah lil daawati wal jihad, a group engaged in jihad in Nigeria.

“We wish to explain about the attack we carried out on Thisday Newspapers. Some of the reasons why we decided to attack some Media Houses, especially Thisday, is because the paper was used in dishonouring our prophet, Mohammad (SAW) during a beauty pageant in Kaduna in November 2002.

“At that time, some people who called themselves leaders of Muslims came out to say they have forgiven those who committed the offence.

“But based on our knowledge, we know that no one has the power to forgive anyone for an offence that God himself has given judgement, especially on an offence that has to do with dishonouring Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

“No one has the power to forgive this type of offence, and the judgement is for such persons to be killed.

“This lady that committed this crime, the judgement on her is to be killed at any opportunity; and the media house is also supposed to be driven out of existence whenever there is a chance to do so.

“We are just getting the opportunity to attack the media house, and we are hoping to continue these attacks until we drive them out of existence.

“It is our hope that Allah (SWT) will help his religion.

“We know that any genuine Muslim must have been deeply touched by the Thisday incident.

“Thisday newspaper is also leading in helping the government in fighting us, alongside other media houses that we will mention soon.

“Some of the offences of Thisday and other media outlets include: firstly, during the botched attempt to rescue some kidnapped foreign nationals in Sokoto; these media houses asked us if we have anything to do with the kidnap and we said we have nothing to do with it, yet these media houses reported that we were responsible for the incident, that was a lie against us.

“Secondly, when we sent a video of our leader, Abubakar Shekau, the media houses reported things that our leader did not say, such as that in response to the president’s threat to finish us in three months, we have also threatened to finish the government in three months. But the truth is, nowhere in the video did our leader said what they attributed to him.

“Thirdly, on the purported arrest of Abu Qaqa by the SSS, we have come out to tell them that the person arrested was not Abu Qaqa, yet the media continue to potray us as liars, and even said that our leader had ordered for Abu Qaqa II to be executed, and we are now searching for Abu Qaqa III.

“Recently too, they came out with another lie that one Mohammed Awwal Kontagora was the Abu Qaqa II that was executed, and that even his parents confirmed it, that was just a big lie to convince the world.

“The media also said that we have killed the father of Abu Darda, so as to pass a message to him, because he had leaked our secrets after his arrest by security agencies, and they  wanted him to know that he is one of our targets.

“These are all lies, and they are many.

“These media houses have committed a lot of offences that is detrimental to Islam, and we don’t have the power to forgive them. We will take revenge on them by God’s grace, some of these media houses have been categorized into three groups.

“The first group is the likes of Thisday whose offences are big.

“The second group we will also attack soon are Punch, Daily Sun, Vanguard, Guardian, Nation, Tribune, and National Accord, which are all newspaper houses.

“There is also VOA Hausa radio. All these media houses we will attack them including their staff and offices, by God’s grace.

“VOA Hausa for instance have recently started campaigning for people to support the government against us by exposing us,

“The next group that are on the verge of joining this list who if they are not careful we will attack very soon include, Leadership, Daily Trust, Peoples Daily and RFI(Radio France international)

“There is an online medium known as Saharareporters who have their office in New York, and who have made their site as a platform for attack against Islam. So we are warning them to stop making their site an avenue for attacking Islam, otherwise we will find a way of attacking them too.

“We resorted to using this medium to send our message instead of the normal tele-conference because of the fear by journalists; which made them refuse to conduct the conference.

“We are grateful to God for the success recorded on the attack on Thisday, and we hope to continue such attacks.

“Finally, the government has now resorted to arresting our wives and children and also demolishing our houses, like they did in Biu recently, that is why we have also resolved to start attacking government schools, especially, tertiary ones.

“We promise to demolish 500 buildings for any one of our houses that the government destroys.

“We have already started with Gombe and Kano.”

It is instructive to note that there is nothing political about Boko Haram. Boko Haram is purely a violent attempt to Islamize Nigeria fueled by frustrations that Nigeria’s illegal membership of the OIC has not produced the desired result after many years. The only political dimension to Boko Haram is the thinking that if Nigeria is completely Islamized, power will always reside with the Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani. And so, the chances of an “infidel” like Jonathan coming to power when Nigeria is brought under Islamic rule will never exist. Boko Haram is not a recent phenomenon in Northern Nigeria; it has always been there, vigorously pursuing the Islamization of Nigeria. The only new development is that they have upped the level of violence deployed to achieve their objectives. Their motivation for upping the level of violence is not related to domestic economic and political matters; rather their motivation is influenced by the recent and on-going escalation of world-wide Islamic terrorism. It was pressure from Boko Haram that led Babangida to illegally enlist Nigeria into OIC (Organization of Islamic Countries). The OIC charter specifically insists that the President of member countries and key top government positions in member countries must be occupied by Muslims. Regrettably, this has not always been the case in Nigeria showing that the OIC route for the complete Islamization of Nigeria has failed woefully. With the failure of the OIC route, the Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani decided to try the TERRORISM route/option especially after the slow progress recorded with the SHARIA route. That is what we are now witnessing in the name of Boko Haram. Their strategy is to first ensure the comprehensive Islamization of the North to provide them with a comfortable home base whenever they decide to march against the south. While I concede the fact that President Jonathan is not to blame for Nigeria’s lack of military preparedness to deal with Boko Haram, I must vehemently deplore Jonathan’s (Aguiyi Ironsi type) approach to solving the Boko Haram menace. Instead of Jonathan piling political and economic pressure on the Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani owners of Boko Haram, he is doing everything possible to please them at the expense of the innocent lives and properties of Southerners and Christians from the North. Before Jonathan came to power the Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani alone consumed about 78% of total Federal resources but today under Jonathan they are now consuming over 92% of Federal resources leaving only 8% for the rest of the country and still asking for more. The very, very vulnerable Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani must be brought under severe political and economic pressure before they can end Boko Haram. The “ Aguiyi Ironsi type” approach of pleasing the Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani which Jonathan seems to have adopted will never end Boko Haram.

  • KenMani

Those that are attributing the Boko Haram phenomenon to politics and economics are indeed ignorant and do not know what they are talking about. To buttress these facts, I would like to recount some of my related personal experiences. In 1980 I gained admission into Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. I arrived Zaria on a Saturday morning and met my friend who was already in his second year. My friend and I came to Zaria to continue with our education after time at the then College of Science and Technology Port Harcourt. My friend received me warmly and arranged for me to take a bath which I did. We immediately proceeded to the Dining and had our breakfast. After Breakfast, I suggested to my friend that we should go to the student Buttery and have a drink before I would retire to rest from my long rail trip from Port Harcourt to Zaria. To my greatest surprise my friend told me that we cannot do that here. That, that kind of provision we enjoyed at College of Science and Technology Port Harcourt was not available in Kongo Campus because of the Centre for Islamic Legal Studies located in Kongo Campus. He suggested that we should go to Samaru or Sabon Gari for a drink if we must. I could not believe what he was saying to me. I asked him if Ahmadu Bello University was not a Federal Government institution meant to accommodate all Nigerians irrespective of their belief and lifestyle. How come then we are all forced to live by the rules made by the so called Center for Islamic Legal Studies which was nothing more than a Department in the faculty of law. If they want total control of their environment why can’t they go and build a wholly owned Islamic Center outside the University. From this experience, it dawned on me early that Islam is violently intolerant, does not respect the legitimate right of others, and has no sense of accommodation and justice. It was very clear to me that Ahmadu Bello University had been completely Islamized despite the fact that it was still running as a Federal Government University. I later discovered that everything in the Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani States of the North was Islamized or was on its way to being Islamized contrary to the provisions of the Nigerian constitution. Any attempt to resist, or ask for our constitutionally guaranteed rights or step outside the lines drawn by the Islamists was always met with violence and death. We found ourselves helpless particularly as the Federal Government Agencies turned a blind eye to whatever the Islamists did to us. It is this unconstitutional Islamization of the Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani States which have been going on for long in complete violation of the Nigerian constitution and regrettably left unattended to by the Federal Government and the other constituent States of Nigeria that have matured into a final push phase now known as Boko Haram. The Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani are the proud and arrogant owners of Boko Haram. Military onslaught against Boko Haram must be seen as a temporary measure to buy time, slow down things and minimize the destructions and deaths occasioned by Boko Haram attacks. The real solution to Boko Haram lies in a complete political renegotiation of the Nigeria Project. The Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani will not accept anything less than completely Islamized Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani States. The renegotiation of the Nigeria Project will be focused among others on how Islamized Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani States will relate to the rest of Nigeria within mutually agreed constitutional framework. We must begin this long but now obviously necessary journey to settlement now. The National Assembly with the support of the Presidency must convene a special session just as they did on fuel subsidy to signal the start of talks. It is my thinking that once genuine talks are started at the National Assembly, we will witness a huge decline in Boko Haram attacks. Warning: Boko Haram will persist even unto unimaginable disastrous consequences unless our National Assembly kick start genuine talks without further delay.

Why blame Northern Governors, why blame the Emirs, why blame the Northern Military Officers etc. etc. etc. It is instructive for us to know that Northern leaders have been under tremendous Boko Haram pressure for a very long time. Even though persons might disagree with the strategies they had deployed all along to contain the Boko Haram pressure, the truth is that they have been doing all they can. What do I mean by Boko Haram pressure? Boko Haram pressure is the tension that exists between the Nigerian Constitution and Islam. It was pressure from Boko Haram that led Babangida to illegally enlist Nigeria into OIC (Organization of Islamic Countries). The OIC charter specifically insists that the President of member countries and key top government positions in member countries must be occupied by Muslims. Regrettably, this has not always been the case in Nigeria due mainly to the provisions of the Nigerian constitution. It was also Boko Haram pressure as I would like to call it that forced Northern Governors to embark on the SHARIA crusade but not much success achieved to the disappointment of their people. The minimal success achieved by the SHARIA crusade can be traced to the operation of the provisions of the Nigerian constitution. These failures, disappointments and related events worldwide forced the thinking that violence and terrorism might succeed where other efforts have failed. With Boko Haram, a new leadership is emerging from the Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani States. If this new leadership is left unchecked, they will eventually force the violent overthrow of the present leadership of the Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani States with attendant great discomfort to the entire country. The only way out of this violent scenario and to ensure that the new emerging leadership does not cause Nigeria much discomfort is for the National Assembly to open special sessions for genuine talks that will lead to mutually agreed renegotiated constitutional framework acceptable to all the contending forces and interest groups. It is my considered opinion based on the issues and likely outcomes of the talks that the National Assembly Special Sessions and not the Presidency remain the best platform for genuine dialogue.

To me I think the government should pass a law to allow everyone who can afford to obtain arms to do so. Because if any one intending to kill you knows you are in position of one he/she will be very careful in using his including the Boko Harams because they are humans too.

  • Thosesecrets

What an insolence….I think it’s time we remove Jonathan as the Aso Rock house keeper and replace it with a President. Or let’s bring President Olusegun Obasanjo back at least as interim.

  • solutions? ??

Boko haram here, ,islam there, hausa here, pres. Jonathan there, north here, south there, of all d comments, nobody seem know what re d solutions. Only name callings.
