Airtel wins triple at Nigerian Telecoms Awards

Airtel is Named Telecoms Brand of the Year, Most Innovative Telecoms Company and Customer Friendly Operator.

Telecommunications services provider, Airtel Nigeria, on Saturday won three awards at the eighth edition of the Nigerian Telecoms Awards.

The telecoms operator beat its competitors to emerge the Industry’s Most Innovative Telecom Company of the Year, Telecom Brand of the year, and Customer Friendly Operator of the year at the event.

Airtel, now owned by Bharti, an Indian integrated telecommunications company with operations in 20 countries across Asia and Africa, started in Nigeria as Econet in 2001. It has transited through four companies, Vodacom, V Mobile, Celtel and Zain, before ending up with the Indian Bharti. Bharti-Airtel took over in November 2010.

Airtel emerged the best in the three categories at the awards. The organisers described Airtel’s strides as enviable “in charting new paths in meeting the demands and needs of its esteemed stakeholders through superior brand experience”.

The Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director of Airtel Nigeria, Rajan Swaroop, described the awards as a testimony to the enterprising and resilient spirit of staff of the company, saying everyone at Airtel Nigeria is passionate about creating value for telecoms consumers as well as exceeding their expectations. He dedicated the award to all employees of the company.

Last year, Airtel laid off a large number of its staff in a restructuring program that saw its remaining staff get huge pay cuts.

The aggrieved employees complained about shabby treatments from their employers. The head of the National Union of Postal and Telecoms Workers, Dele Adegbile, had alleged that the Airtel subjected its employees to inhuman working conditions and abused Nigerian labour laws.

Customer friendly network

The award organizers said Airtel’s customer service award, which it  on back to back, demonstrates the commitment of the management to treat their customers properly.

The company was commended for delighting “telecoms consumers in Nigeria with pocket-friendly and innovative offerings, bonuses, and exceptional customer relations policy.”

Speaking at the occasion held at the Incubator Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Nigerian Telecommunications Awards, Chief Alex Akinyele, said the awards are sustained by credibility, describing the Industry event as the most credible in the Nigerian telecoms space.
